Joint dislocations can be as simple as a finger popped back into place with some tapping to a career ending dislocation like Zach Miller's knee injury. There are certain aspects of joint dislocations that are similar regardless of the location, and in this video we'll review some more well known joint dislocations in NFL history and explain what happened.

An important factor for Zach Miller's injury was the turf, had that been grass, his cleat would've slid and he would've landed on his ass, but the turf held on to his cleat keeping it from moving and putting the force on his joint

Excellent video. One of my daughters knees dislocate. She has exercised her legs muscles according to a pt schedule put together for her years ago but even with beautiful super toned legs sometimes one of her knees will pop out. She puts it back in place herself. Her orthopedist says that pain is extraordinary and most people couldn’t do that. She had surgery on one of her knees after a dislocation caused damage. Her Ortho said her knees hyper mobility was the most extreme he had ever seen. She just has this in her knees.

How old is she? That can have a lot to do with it. But also, I had a lot of friends with similar knee “problems” if you want to say that. She’s definitely a trooper though. Super strong little lady you’ve got there.

Great question (and I hope Dr. Sutterer answers)!
I'm not a sports medicine practitioner of any kind, but I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type (hEDS), and dislocations and subluxations (partial dislocations) are common in hEDS. I am fortunately that I rarely have full dislocations, but I have subluxations multiple times a day. For example, my knees regularly hyper-extend (I have "sway-back knees").
Sports injuries, especially dislocations, always fascinate me. I rarely have a visceral reaction like "whoa," but some of them, like the knee dislocation for Zach Miller in the intro, definitely still make me react. I'm not sure if I'd say I'm grossed out, but I'm definitely awed and amazed (as well as upset for the person suffering said injury because if it looks bad to even me, then it's probably quite serious).

Was just about to ask this. I can't watch the Miller injury at all and Doc over here is just slowly rewinding it over and over lol. I guess there has to be some sort of desensitizing that happens over time.

@@neverwasastar my knee joint dislocates itself like once a year. It is extremely painful, way more painful than a broken bone. I usually gotta slowly try to straighten my leg and it will " pop " back in place. It will be sore for weeks after that. Apparently I'm the only one who have experienced that. Never heard or seen anybody else with this same problem. I also got multiple other joint problems but this is by far the worst.

Having sustained a severe tri-malleolar fracture with dislocation, and then a shoulder fracture-dislocation with a comminuted fracture of the humeral head (busted it in little pieces) along with a biceps tear,
I can completely agree these injuries are terribly painful!!!!!!
Thank goodness for wonderful surgeons who were able to fix me up.

yea the first 6 times happend in HS from football. I was a decent starting linebacker and everytime i would start getting it back to normal..I was rushed back into action. Coaches didnt care about me as a person, only a player. After the last one in highschool finally eneded up getting surgery for it (lateral release). Now im 31 and it just happened again, making it 8 times total now. I was working out doing kickboxing and went to throw a kick then bam! The kneecap was all the way on the other side of my knee. Put it back in place myself there on the spot. Felt bones slide against each other and everything. No other joints or anything just the kneecap patella. Once someone suffers this injury...the odds of it happening again is tenfold....Anyways not going to let it bring me down. Most people would probably quit...but fuck that! No im not a professional athlete..but working out and staying in shape is the only thing i have in life. Im Going to come back better than ever! #determined

I have patella alta, which means my kneecaps sit too high and not in the groove they're supposed to sit in, causing many dislocations over the years. Sometimes they pop back in spontaneously, other times I've had to get someone to help reduce the dislocation (my sports physician taught me how to reduce it). One time I couldn't get it reduced and I had to have surgery. It's extremely painful but once the dislocation is reduced, the pain dissipates fairly quickly most of the time.

Freshman year football I was running down the field to catch a pass, and my cleat flew off my foot and I took a step and went straight down to the ground. When I got an MRI done they confirmed that it was an MCL tear. Then like 8 months later during baseball, I was sliding into second and my shoulder somehow dislocated. I also got an ankle sprain the next year (last year) during football. I have very bad luck when it come to injuries; I keep a first aid kit in my athletic bag just in case I need it.
