      Truly makes me sick. This should give everyone pause to further consume the NFL. Neutral observer my a**. Anybody could see this was a concussion. The failures were clearly neurological to the casual observer. He hit the back of his head for crying out loud, where the cerebellum is located! (Doc what about that for a mechanism for injury?) The fact he went back in the game was a huge risk to his health. I've had some concussions and I've coached high school sports in the last ten years. Something stressed is the brain's increased susceptibility to injury when it is recovering from PREVIOUS injury. Tonight Tua's health now and in the future was jeopardized for no other reason than the NFL is a blood sport. Tonight's injury was entirely preventable by common freaking sense. I feel terrible for him and I wish more had been said about him not playing this game out of precaution

    I'm not a doctor, but as someone who has had back issues for 20 years including ruptured discs and back spasms, the thing that stood out to me is he got up, then fell down and popped right back up. Genuine question, when your back goes out, do you grab at your back? Seems like simple human nature is to touch the part of your body that is injured. Tua never makes any reference to his back at all.

      @cjartiste ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @@ChubbyJontheBartender When I had back spasms, the first thing I did was grab my back then land stiff on the ground, and did not get back up. Tua did hurt his back earlier in the game but his reaction was to stiffen up and reach for his back. He did neither of those things on the play above. Sucks for Tua because he needs to trust that the team is gonna protect him from himself.

There will always be some big checks but I've always felt like the guys in the NHL tend to just squeeze out the puck carrier against the boards rather than lay them out as we tried to do once we were allowed to hit people. My worst concussion though was in gym class flag football in high school when my friend and I were both trying to intercept a pass and collided heads without any head protection. I was blacked out for probably 30 seconds and had the worst neck/head pain I've ever felt. I was waiting outside the pharmacy for my mom to get a neck brace for me as I was puking in the bush outside. Any injury to the head is no joke.

      @@_JamesBrown it won't show because it wasn't a concussion. How many times a game does a players hit head the ground without a concussion occuring? Tua lands on his back in the clip first. He didn't go through some 30 second check. He was in the locker room for the last 3 minutes of the first half AND the entirety of halftime. Hilarious how people just assume Tua AND an independent neurologist are both lying about this because they saw him hit the ground and stumble (which can 100% happen from a back spasm, coming from someone that has them often).

      I could argue differently. I was born with a spina bifida occulta... I ended up contracting a lower back infection (s1-l5) and (after recovery) went through years of thinking I was ok... Then randomly I would try to kick a ball in soccer or jump to grab a rebound and my back/knees would give out and I would collapse very similarly. Not saying he didn't have a concussion, because i've dealt with those too. But providing a benefit of the doubt scenario since Tua has had hip and lower back injuries in the past.

I subscribed and hope you will do a follow up on the injury in the game to Tua and if perhaps the could be a connection to the previous injury likely to his head.

Yes it can most definitely cause sudden twinges of the back to the point of almost making you fall like that. I agree it did look like a TBI. They cited the goal line sneak as the first back injury of the game. A player grabbed his feet and pulled them backwards as another player was pushing his upper torso backwards, hyperextending his back. He took a while to get up and looked wobbly after that play. Is there any way the two can be linked?

    I’ve had back spasms since I was 16 due to shit deadlifting form in HS football weight room. Like you said this isn’t the posture. All the stumbling around and leaning forward is excruciating on that lower back. Instead when my spasms got bad I would walk upright as erect as possible to support my lower back.
    Also he absolutely crosses up his own ankles which no athlete ever does when just walking around. He’s disoriented, no question.

    Hey Doc! Quick question: My friend got hit in a rugby game, and his reaction afterwards looked a lot like this. He was wobbly and fell down a couple times. He swore he didn't hit his head, that he wasn't concussed, and that this kind of instability had happened occasionally throughout his career. We obviously took him out of the game anyway, the doctor at the game told him that this was not normal and he should go to a neurologist. He did, and as it turns out he had spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal canal I think? That was my first thought when I saw that they were blaming this on a back injury, is it possible that something like that could cause symptoms like this? Or that's what the staff thought had happened? I'd love to know what you think! Thanks again for the great analysis!

      @@ryanokane1312 I hope your friend is doing well. This just doesn't sound like the same thing. Tua and the team both said it was a lower back injury. If so, they would have looked pretty closely at all possibilities there one would believe. I hate to say it but it looks like Tua wanted back in the game and because of the importance of this game the team was more than willing to let him. What kind of meaningful evaluation can they really make in the span of fifteen minutes anyway?

    • @CharlieHustle81
      @CharlieHustle81 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My stepfather has spinal cord stenosis and his spontaneous falling started at least a good 25-30 years ago now. I remember being a young kid of 11 or 12 helping him up and things of that nature. Today he is at the point of being almost completely wheelchair bound. Tua look like he just became a rag doll lost muscle tone and collapsed. When my stepfather used to fall it looked more like he tripped. I can recall one time specifically where he tried to say he tripped over a paper plate that was on the ground but it was a good 5 feet away from him. I come to understand later when I got a little older he was embarrassed about the falling. Another thing that manifested at the same time as the falling was that he would spontaneously drop things that he was holding. It wasn’t a case of he was trying to grab something and it slipped or anything like that. He could of had something in his hand for like 5 minutes and then all of a sudden it was on the ground. I don’t know if it is like that for every person that has it but those are the things I noticed growing up with and helping take care of him over all of these years.

      In a sense yes, back spasms could cause you to collapse but you usually don’t immediately pop up and or not grab at that spot where the pain was. Tua didn’t make any gestures that his back hurt and it doesn’t explain the head wobbles and weird “drunken” walk he was doing. This looks like a clear cut concussion seeing as the symptoms occurred right after his head slammed into the ground.

    I have a lot of back issues, and a few times when my back has flared up and made me drop to the ground, the LAST thing I want to do is hop right back up and try to 'run it off'.. It can actually be really scary when your back just gives out like that. I wouldn't move anywhere until either the episode passes on its own, or someone can come check it out. To me, last Sunday's incident looked nothing like a back hip, or leg injury. Tonight's incredibly disturbing incident obviously validated that.
