Joel Cardenas that's exactly what this phone is. A hub to buy stuff on Amazon.
10 ปีที่แล้ว +8
My first thought exactly. And amazon is like "hey pay me a thousand dollars and then you can buy more things easily!!" Seriously? This is an exclusive feature??
Even if they do it's not for long, why? Because most phones have pretty similar battery life these days, just about all are terrible apart from >5.5" phones.
I'm a fan of Apple but I HAVE to say. Amazon did VERY well for their first phone. They put some stuff into the phone that lots of developers have been trying to do, such as the tilt to scroll feature. Props to Amazon!
I know this video is 2 years old, but you can turn off the Dynamic Perspective on the device. Also, you can add the Google Play store and do not need to root the device at all
People have to understand that its the first phone Amazon produces, further in the future, they will make better phones learning from the mistakes in this phone. It was the same thing with their first Kindle, its liked better every kindle they add and trust me, they're improving each day thanks to reviews of their items.
Really surprised you didn't talk about the phone not having a back button. And you even said you found yourself "just pressing the home button and stating all over again." There's a gesture where you swipe from the bottom of the screen up, which is used as the "back button."
This phone and its assesories including packaging... All are premium features and looks... Sadly it didn't work out for Amazon then... But hope Amazon will release a smartphone in future.
Every device David Pierce reviewed has sounded like beautiful poetry until NOW. Thank you Amazon for ruining his streak. Never have I heard the voice of a review god sound so uninspired.
They should have followed the Kindle Fire business model, Good hardware at a low price with some advertising. If this fire phone is focused on e-shopping on amazon and some 3d games it doesn't need all the potential of a Snapdragon 800, they could have use one Snapdragon 600 or less
I have this phone too. I literally took the phone apart trying to find the cause of it and, sure enough I found out that this phone bears so much setup software and apps load on it, that eventually the particular component on its circuit-board that regulates the On/Off switch gets damaged and destroys the ability of the phone to go beyond the amazon fire opening screen and causes the phone to behave like this. However, it also drains the battery really fast, and once a new battery heats up enough to pass on that heat to the damaged component, the phone will begin to restart again. However, this won't happen immediately. Once you put in a brand new Amazon battery in, it will run for 6 months, and then start this fiasco. So, you have to make a decision - for the sake of Amazon fire-phone's superb features, if you are prepared to spend USD 20-25 or PKR. 1,500 every 6 months, then by all means keep the phone. Otherwise, chuck it away - but remember, this phone is one of a kind. No other company has managed to come even close to making a similar phone - nor will they ever. So, it's your choice. As far as I am concerned, I am so attached to this phone that USD 25 every six months is tolerable. This issue is unavoidable, and it WILL happen sooner or later to every phone in this series. It is a technical certainty. Most people buy this phone and after a while get irritated because it doesn't have Android's standard features of Google Play Store and eventually they install a software called CYANOGENMOD which overwrites the Fire Technology software and turns it into a normal android phone like Samsung Galaxy etc. At the end of the day, its your phone, your choice what you want to do
The reason this phone won't sell is because of the un-necessary complication of dynamic perspective. Samsung used to get flack for doing this kind of thing back in the S3/S4 days and you'd have thought Amazon would have caught onto the fact that adding complication to the UX ruins the UX. It's specced nicely but anyone knows that unless your phone is the beefiest phone around, the phone won't be sold on just specs. I think that for a second generation device, they need to lower the price down about $150, streamline and restrain dynamic perspective to only areas that make sense like in games rather than having it dominate every aspect of the OS and they may be on to a solid mid ranger
I watched this video on Flipboard and I hope Amazon Fire has all the play store apps available, because without apps their is no point of having a smartphone. I hope they release Android version of Fire phone in India.
Liked the basic spec concept. First half of this video almost got me, basic design, functionality and battery life are some of my priorities. But yea the hand flippy stuff isn't going to fly as I'm struggling to pull up a map as I'm driving. And seems like all the self prompting features jacked up the price quite a bit. Also can't help but to cringe at that kindle home screen..
All these reviews say the samething just about. The only good thing that I got from this review that wasn't already said in the others is that with dynamic perspective, gaming is awesome, and that's an understatement! Speaking about games, which are apps, all reviewer and even all the tech sites, when the Fire Phone was first announced, all said that Amazon's Appstore is limited against the Google Play Store. Although limited in terms of quantity, what about in terms of quality? Games aside for a minute, there are several apps that do the same core thing as another app! The different calenders and calculator, email clients and VOIP apps, etc, etc, all do the samething as the next, maybe one does it better than the other! The Amazon Appstore might have 5 different calender apps as opposed to the 15 found on the Google Play Store.... do you really need 15 difference calender apps as opposed to the 5 available thru Amazon's store? I think the point that people are missing is that although the Google Play Store now, either matches iTunes Appstore or exceeds it in the number of apps, iTunes still has the higher quality apps and if your favorite and reliable app is found on the Google Play Store then 9 times out of 10 it was out first on iOS! So where does the Amazon Appstore fit in, in all this and why did I bring up iOS and the iTunes Appstore? Well lets go back to the games. Lili, for example, was an extremely popular game that came out when the regular iPhone 5 came out and it has long since been an exclusive to the iOS platform. That game is now available for Android but there's two catches here. One, you won't find it on the Google Play Store, two, you also won't find it just by downloading and installing the Amazon Appstore on any Android device, even if it matches or exceeds the specs, Snapdragon 800, Snapdragon 801, or even the upcoming Snapdragon 805! 2GB ram or 3GB ram, etc, etc. You will only find Lili on the Amazon Appstore via Amazon hardware! Keep in mind Lili was not specifically made for features like dynamic perspective like Tofu and Saber's Edge are! It's not made by Amazon's game studio! It's been available on iOS since late 2012! There's plenty of other examples of games that went from iOS to Android BUT ONLY ON Amazon's hardware, notably, their tablets! Batman, Walking Dead, Wolfs Among Us, etc! By the time the Google Play Store got Telltale Games' The Walking Dead The Game Season 1, the Amazon Appstore had Season 2, two to three months already! To me games are my favorite type of apps! I game via mobile more than console. The Amazon Appstore WITH Amazon hardware gets most of the iOS exclusives before you even knew they were even available for Android because they aren't even available on the Google Play Store which is the appstore by the creators of Android themselves, Google, but yet in this aspect they are actually bested! You can't even crack an Amazon Appstore game MADE for Amazon hardware and sideload it and play it on other Android devices with equivalent hardware as I stated above! What you can do though, is sideload Google Play Store apps and games to Amazon hardware WITHOUT root and 99% of the apps and games work! Amazon as created a version of Android that is still Android but with the quality and reliability of iOS! The reason why Fire OS is closed and is it's own eco-system is so it won't be hammered by Android's number 1 flaw, FRAGMENTATION!!!
It's their first phone ever anybody expecting it to be perfect will be let down, look at the nexus phones it went from blah to wow this is great(Nexus 5) greatness takes time and I think it'll be nice phone for anybody that wants to try something different
My thoughts exactly this dude thinks everything is over complicated because he's so used to the dumb down iPhone. And of course will never see josh do another review for some reason. I miss the days when companies were praised for their originality and new thoughts on how to do all things. If you're not playing copycat to the iPhone these days everything's too complicated and not user friendly. Don't think I'll be watching any more reviews from the verge especially since David Pearce seems to be the only one who gets any screen time anymore.
How do you know what's going to become a major feature if you don't include it. If everyone had your type of thinking there wouldn't be any more innovations. Adding new features and seeing what sticks is the way you bring upon new features that people use on a daily basis. The simple fact is David Pierce doesn't like anything other than his iPhone if you go back and wash all his reviews its the same thing over and over again. He really only like the iPhone.
Yeah. So why argue which one is "better" I wish people would stop arguing about which phone its better. The verge only does it because it will bring the clicd to their videos. The way I see it Apple does the research of what they thing will become a major feature in secret and then released it. Amazon and google bring the idea to the public first. The difference is that by bringing it first to the public before the company it self knows how it will become a major feature leaves a bad reputation if the idea don't materialize. Makes it look like the company doesn't have a goal. In Amazon case looks like they just added those feature but the main focus is to bring people to amazon shopping. They should focus on the end experience and the shopping will become naturally.
Gerardo Gutierrez Not taking any sides but it is good that Amazon are trying something. You guys have to remember this is their first ever smartphone. So it isn't going to be great, far from it. Let them experiment and find what's best as I know the first time I made something like a cake, it was awful. But I continued to try until it actually tasted (and looked) like a cake. It will be good to see what amazon will do and who will copy them and vice versa.

Which is exactly the same thing MKBHD said on his video. Agreed most of the features (except dynamic perspective) can be made into apps that Amazon can spread to an even bigger audience compared to the Fire Phone.
Let me get this across: when you say "It has about a day and a half of battery life" and then say "It's all good enough without ever standing out" you are doing something wrong for sure...
If the phone had been under $350 off contract I would've bought it. $650 for a 720p display, last years snapdragon 800 chip and no google play services is what kills this phone.Considering our phones are our daily driver, you need a more advanced operating system and selection of apps. The kindle fires work great as entertainment devices because that's what people use tablets for but smartphones are so much more and at $650 this phone doesn't compare to today's smartphones.
Would consider off contract now for 200$ BRAND new? Why not! I have the kindle fire and am on amazing prime ... I'm using the iPhone 6+ But my husband needs a new phone not sure if he wants IOS or android and what phone I should grab him. Lgg3 Wait for S6 Or grab S5 He's an android guy more than IOS
You are definitely right!! After some time they will have fixed their flaws and add new stuff!! Apple screwed up big time when they first made a phone and now they are very popular Amazon is just like them but with a whole lot more potential!!
I don't want a phone that is constantly selling me stuff...

6 years went by.... still trying to see what he did there
Can you please do a news app video ??
I dont know which one to choose.
Please help
Can you side-load apps from Google Play?
Good straight forward review. Thanks!
Thank you for the thoughtful review, I am a seller on amazon and was hoping this would me. It seems that I will be going with the iphone 5s
I would love it if The Verge would put a score for reviews at the end of the video, like their sister company, Polygon.
Lol, I saw what you did there. Gotta stock up on those Magnums!
Love your unbiased review.

not a good phone for a two year contract, but this is their first phone!
You are definitely right!! After some time they will have fixed their flaws and add new stuff!!
Apple screwed up big time when they first made a phone and now they are very popular Amazon is just like them but with a whole lot more potential!!
Magnums eh?
Day and a half battery life?!? Oh, only available on AT&T.
Why do have be hater about the amazon fire phone
I'd get it for .99 IF there was NO contract and I could use it as a back up GO phone.....
They should have called this the Amazon Money Phone.
Amazon Fire is a nice shopping tool. Just it
This was my first phone
Instead of a whole phone, just make the app.
