We have talked about phone companies in the past. Remember those episodes about Blackberry or Motorola, companies who once were at the very top of the industry and somehow ended up falling in battle. Today, we will not exactly talk about a phone company but about a phone, yeah, a particular one.
A phone that, for better or worse, had everyone's attention just by existing, just because it was created by one of the largest internet companies in the world: the Amazon Fire Phone
Now, of course, Amazon is not a phone company, but what is it exactly? It's a huge store, and it's likely where you get a lot of your stuff online, even groceries in some locations, probably even more now that people may be spending more time at home. But Amazon also provides web services to clients like Netflix, NASA, or Slidebean. Wink.
It's also a media streaming platform with its production studio for feature films and series, and it also acquired the largest video game streaming platform, Twitch, for around $1B, in 2014. But it also had its line of diapers.
So, what kind of company Amazon is? How do all these things connect? It sounds like a brand that aims for global market domination somehow, and seemingly with the Fire Phone, they had high hopes to create a product that would unify it all into a worldwide, fresh brand. Something like Apple or Nike, but for everything.

If Amazon did have a phone, at the end of every call it would ask if you wanted to buy their recommended item based on your phone conversation. Instead, I get it later on and pretend that Google isn't listening to me

170 MILLION DOLLARS??!!! You know that feeling when the vending machine eats your 1.99 dollars? Thats probably how much it mattered to Bezos.
Worth 200 billion dollars, hardly. If anything his pride was more hurt.
I bought a Fire Phone a couple years after they came out for $50 to use as a secondary phone while traveling and, I have to say, it's actually a pretty nice phone. Not $650 or daily driver nice, but certainly nicer than a $50 phone deserves.
Can you make a video of the track record of amazon successful and failed products?
Bezos has always reiterated his tendency of making big bets and huge write offs, but we have never seen much of his failed products at all.

That 3D effect was a pretty cool gimmick. Something that could have made it stand out in the market if the phone wasn't so premium-priced and limited in other ways (like the pared down android feature set).

I actually own one, and this phone was so ahead of its time! (Once you install Google Play Store and disable the motion tracking feature). Could use some changes, but I actually got fond of it.

Crazy you just released, I was fancying rewatching the keynote... which is not available on YT anymore. Can't find the full thing with any search I tried.
The parallax idea was actually quite good. But it was a big bet for a gimmick. I do suspect Apple experimented with the concept though in secret. But it’s a pretty niche feature for a platform which had essentially no developers.
I remember my sister wanting to buy an Amazon tablet for her kid, but I had a lot of headache making it work because tablet isn't officially supported in my country. The tablet refuses to activate even if I have an Amazon account. The solution was to sideload Google services, but it was so frustrating to do.

I own it.
It has Andoid 4.4 and supports all the major LTE networks worldwide - all those different frequency bands.
So nowadays, I am using it as a WiFi hotspot abroad.
I had one of them phones so much Amazon ads was on the home screen

Jeff, if you want your company to be love. Just pay your staffs decently, pay your taxes, and do something with that billions of dollar that just sits there in the bank. Boom...done, people will love ya.
I was intrigued by this phone, but I couldn't buy it because I was in the middle of the contract on my present phone. Generally speaking a phone has to be on the market long enough for people to get out from under their present contract. Sad to see it go before I could move on it!
Incredible analysis. I think I became too feature focused and forced the user to differ to the device when its supposed to be the other way around.
I remember seeing this advertised on amazon and finding it odd and not being interested in having a smartphone.
Then it just disappeared.

it was ahead of time and was out of people's comfort zone (no play store, no android os)
To be honest the phone was pretty great! I actually considered getting one but it never made it to my country. I really want Amazon to do it again.

This phone and its assesories including packaging... All are premium features and looks... Sadly it didn't work out for Amazon then... But hope Amazon will release a smartphone in future.
The pricing strategy for their tablets is to break even and hope they make up for lost revenue via media and services.

Hi! It's a Motorola New MotoZ commercial from 2016.
For me it felt like something that just existed to get you to buy stuff from Amazon. And as I recall it didn't link into the android app market enough??? That would have been the main thing that would have killed not for me. That why I haven't bought a fire tablet
If they had just had supported Google services & a better design then maybe it would have fared better. It should've been priced as a more a budget friendly priced phone. A good measure would've been to match HTC's aluminum hardware design in order to compete with the iPhone 6 when it released in 2014

I happened to be very familiar with the network of people who were a part of this phone effort. Very smart people who were ultimately too late to the phone game and couldn’t innovate past what Apple had established.
In fact, for a band of best product designers the Bay Area had to offer (freelance) earned a healthy percentage of that $170,000,000 cost.
Also, the android foundation at the time forced tons of missteps that weren’t aligned with the grand vision this video is recapping.
$170 million was a great tax write off.

Its not a flop.. fans wanted it but it wasnt available in shops and ads there wasnt any.

The sad thing is aside from all the gimmicky nonsense it was not a bad phone at all. The issue was the high asking price (which they dropped to $199 within months) and horrible operating system that it came with. Put a third party version of Android on it, and you had yourself a decent phone. I owned one for about 18 months and loved it. If Amazon had unlocked the bootloader and allowed people to mod it, I think they would have found a niche market.

I owned this phone for almost 2 weeks and returned it. I thought the Interface was interesting but the battery life was horrendous and the app store wasn't good enough.
In my opinion if you wanna be love by your customers and associates your companies with good-feel, maybe, I don't know, pay your workers fairly and be at the forefront of environmental protection since your company created such a waste. I understand how this company became so successful and why people depends on it. But i can't be the only one who felt guilty everytime i ordered something from Amazon. And this feeling will only grow larger among people.

@@serenejack sure thing. Even worked with tv shows it recognized the sound and inmidiatelly you could be purchasing the tv show, also music, bar codes, everything. EVEN cereal boxes.
Sell it for the price you make it for just 5 bucks or 10 bucks more

It primarily failed because it was an android phone that could not run android software. For example, try blocking spam calls on the Amazon phone. Thats one of the CORE requirements that the phone failed at MISERABLY.
They should have called it the Kindle phone
