A phone that sells you stuff from Amazon. A great idea if it was free or cheap.
It would actually even make sense. Just think of guaranteed 20-30% discount if you buy anything through their phone.

3 years later, you can buy it now for 50 to 60$ cheap now on eBay I got one but beware you have to download the Google play apk

The problem with the FirePhone is that it is a phone for shopping thats all. Most of the tricks are gimmicks.
Shaan Menon Windows Phone has about 300,000 apps. Versus Android has 1.3 Million apps.
More Numbers are not a pointer. Tell me how many of those 1.3 Million are actually working and is relevant..? any common man hardly uses about 60 apps on a maximum. Shaan Menon The thing is: That's the same problem with the Windows Store (except for the Malware and Spyware part). When I got a Windows Tablet, a lot of the apps were a bit outdated. There are rarely updates to the apps (Or do they download in the background?). And I also heard the same through Windows Phone. Heard through Windows Phone reviews and comparisons. And also, Windows Phone lacks some *important* apps. They don't have Google's services on there. If your me, I use Google services a lot! So not having that is a major downside. They also don't have a lot of the games I play! The alternatives usually suck.
Samsung will probably have 6 phones out next week with dynamic perspective.

The ending surprised me a little bit, you usually give your objective take on a product and leave it to your viewers to decide for themselves on what to go with. I've never seen you outright tell them not to buy something. You must feel very strongly about this.

Damn MKBHD is on some hater shit right now!! "Im not buying it and you shouldnt either" is kind of ignorant. Just because you dont like the concept (having never even used the device so i cant say used the phone) doesnt mean nobody else will! I think just because you thought "you werent cool enough to get the phone for free to review" that some way amazon was snubbing you?? Kinda lame dude. Reserve judgement until you actually have had time with the device before writing it off.
Like he said, there is other options (phones) out there for same amount of money, on top of that this is first phone by amazon and they are pricing it that high. Amazon didn't bring anything innovative on top of that it's even more limited. 3D? HTC Evo 3D 128$ off contract on amazon, scan thingy like he showed there is apps for that for far less money.
So why whould you pay same amount of money for something that you never heard of and it dosen't do any better job than HTC,Samsung,Iphone,Motorola,Nokia or the OnePlus One phone which is 299$ of contract which has similar specs as any high end phone. Defenetly i wouldn't be buying it and any smart person who can recognize the features of the phone wouldn't either.
Y'know, this is why we watch him-- to get his expert opinion on these devices. He's a tech guy-- if he sees a gimmick I fully expect his to raise the alarm. I also don't expect him to purchase this phone if the specs aren't worth it on paper.
I'm here for his OPINION, not for some corporate shill who says everything he reviews is amazing and worth a shot.
İ totally agree with u about MKBHD being biased towards this new gadget. I understand his reasons for the downsides of this phone but still it's rather very early to brand it as a lost-cause.
Yes it's the silliest thing to pass judgment over a phone review but the very strict criticism surprised me. Guess when u r very young and study some marketing u think u instantly become an oracle who can name the next big thing.

It looks more accurate in the Fire Phone, and rightfully so because they put an extra 4 cameras.

Not just Apple. There are tons of apps (at least on Android, most likely also on iOS) that can do the same with your wallpaper or with the game you're playing. Using the extra camera's it might be 5% better, but making an entire phone out of that gimmick is stupid.
Actually, Android had parallax home-screen years before iOS 7 (i.e., /watch?v=uzaTWpjDxRQ)
Well first of all Apple was not the first one with a feature like that and Apple's "Perspective Zoom" as they call it, works really bad. It either makes you dissy or just feels weird. Also this phone tracks your face to keep it in sync, while Apple's is just on a gyroscope that predicts how you are holding your phone.
So when you lay down, that feature works really bad on iPhones.
Apple just love to take a old (rarely used) feature and call it new & evolutionary or something like that.

That FireFly feature is pretty cool in my opinion. Quick & easy to use with a hardware enabled button, along with the fact that personally I buy almost all of my stuff through Amazon... I have a problem... But at a $650 price point I agree, it is too much for small features.

Hate to be negative here but let's break this down.
Dynamic Perspective - People HATED 3D UI's. It was attempted with PC's in the early 2000's and again with phones in the early 2010's. It DOESN'T work, is a pain to use and often is forgotten about. Things like 3D TV's, and the HTC Evo 3D were cancelled less than 2 years after they came out. Nobody wants to have to tilt their head around to navigate menus and fuck around with viewing angles when on any other phone, they can just swipe. Much, MUCH easier.
Firefly - Where do I begin. Not only has this ben attempted numorus times and failed but is also a GIANT privacy concern. With a simple software command, ALL the surveillance devices in your phone can be turned on? This is like the Xbox One issue all over again. Then there's the fact that it's just a way to get you to buy another one of something you already are seeing, watching or have. What the hell is the point of that?
MayDay Live Tech Support - Yep. Because someone who can't figure how to launch facebook on their phone is totally going to remember about this super advanced tech support feature.
Price and Exclusivity: Yep. $2-300. You're paying to give amazon MORE money. Add that to the fact that it's on the second most corrupt carrier in the country exclusively, and not only are you minimizing the potential amount of people to buy this thing, the only people who are going to is older people who are tech illiterate and aren't already invested into Apple's or Google's (or even Microsoft's *smirk*) ecosystems.
As Marques said, this could havve just been an app but instead is just a big quick money grab for amazon because iTunes/App Store and Google Play are REALLY hurting them. Hence the reason they made this their own thing instead of just an App.
This thing will fail HARD, except with people who know nearly nothing about technology or it's history. It's full of failed experiments and exists SOLELY to give Amazon more money in the wake of Apple and Google killing them in the digital goods markets.
Whatcha wanna bet you can turn Dynamic Perspective off.

I think if Amazon doesn't ditch this project in the next year, there could be potential if they make a version that can run a clean version of Android. Amazon also needs to make the point that if you are in the Amazon ecosystem (Fire TV and Kindle Fire) devices like this and their specially branded features provide better functionality than anything the competition could provide. This year was when Amazon gets into the game but next year will need to be when Amazon shows if they are serious about this. Great video overall, Marques!

I don't think it's fair to tell everyone to *not* buy the phone; that makes it sound completely worthless. The four front-facing cameras is a unique feature that might be the selling point for some people.
While it is an unique feature, it is nothing more than a gimmick which gets boring after less than half an hour. I really don't see why you should buy it when there is so much competition out there which can do more for a lot less money.

well the four cameras on the front are useless, its more of a gimmick than anything, when you look at its just an Android phone that is not an Android phone. I feel thats why he said what he said, you could just buy an actual Android or iPhone and have a much better experience.

I have the Nexus 5 and would recommend it without a doubt.
Nexus 5 any day of the week, and by the time the fire phone comes out we'll perhaps know if there will be a Nexus 6. The Nexus 5 is a very powerful no nonsense phone, especially if you root, mod, and flash ROMs. I have mine overclocked to 2.5GHz with overclocked bus and l2 cache. Nerd talk aside, it's a better phone for half the price.

Hey Marques, Windows Phone also has their version of Firefly called Bing Vision to scan barcodes of pretty much everything and Bing Music search to listen in on a song and tell you what it is with links to buy it. - comes with a dedicated button as well

Never understood that about tablets and phones, considering that the only difference is the size and the cellular radios.

Are there better options? Obviously the 3d is completely unique, and there isn't an app that does firefly. Most other phones are "MORE GIGA HURTZ BIGGER SCREENS" which is extremely unappealing.
IMO a bit of an unfair review to tell people not to buy...
The HTC one M8 does the same sort of pseudo 3D effects, albeit they look uglier but the same sort of thing none the less.

For what you get for 650$ it's crap. Have you seen the device? It looks like a simplified HTC Evo. 3D is nifty, but from day to day use I doubt many people with use it. Firefly is really the only cool thing.

Amazon is just charging the market price for a modern smart phone. Just as samsung, htc and others charged the same price as the iphone after the iphone set the market price for a *modern smartphone* back in 2007. The iphone was in the $600 range when it came out in 2007 and stayed in that price range after newer versions of it came out. The iphone set the market price for *modern smartphones*. Samsung and HTC just followed along with the same price, even though Samsung and HTC don't make their own software, they get Android free from Google and just tweek it. Apple makes their own OS, apple makes their own App Store, and iTunes store. Thus the price for the iPhone is $600. But why does Samsung and HTC charge the same thing if they don't develop any of that? Because they just charge the market price for a phone and get more profit than Apple does from selling iPhones. Same thing with Amazon. Amazon is just charging the market price.
