    Thanks for these videos. I just passed the 7018 3g and 4g 1 inch structural steel test last week. With these videos and the help from my instructor it ended up being a breeze. Now I'm hoping to learn how to run 232 flux core so I can test for that in the near future.

    The names Wes. I have been watching you for 2 years have commented and learned from you and I owe you a debt of gratitude for my own success. I just graduated college at Loyalist College in Ontario Canada . 2 year Welding and Fabrication.
    I achieved my CWB All position SMAW and I have a Flat MIG Ticket as well.
    like you said it makes a big difference whether my kids will eat or not, and now I am raw goods looking to go and stick some stuff together. I knew next to nothing about Welding when I walked into college and my teachers are a mix of great backgrounds from a metallurgist and hot forge masters degree holder from india, to a woman theory teacher who has worked all over the earth in the military and aviation industries to mention a few, we have fabbers and mobile welders from the pipelines. I love everyone and the community on here that you attract is top class!

    Terrific video. I have major issues with overhead 7018. The main issue is that I'm blind in my left eye. The other problem is with stick angle and setup. I was always taught the straight stick as you showed at the beginning of this video. This setup made it very difficult for me to see the puddle and arc length because of the distance from my test piece. I will try this setup in the future. Thank you.

    when I did mine I took the arm off tacked it to the table and laid on the floor and easily did the 4g in the most comfortable position possible...all sparks were going away from my didn't get burned, I was in a simple carhartt longsleeve.....I learned welding is about comfort...you cant always be in the most comfortable position but if you learn to put yourself in the most comfortable position possible for that weld you will never lay a bad weld.

    Jody, Great vid! Thank you.
    I was welding under my truck and things were going OK. As you know there are flashes of light, smoke etc. I ended the pass but noticed that there was still some flickering/smoke going on. I flipped back my helmet and discovered that the rag in my breast pocket was burning along nicely! A few pats and I put out the fire. Took the rag away too! LOL

    Excellent videos! Question, I have almost always used a whip line with my Bernard twist lock electrode holder especially when doing critical welds that don't need to be balls to the walls in speed. You're able to bend the rod in any position needed and always have a tight grip on it. Just wandering your opinion on the twist lock holder and why I very seldom see you use one. One other thing is, overhead welding is one of my favorites especially welding heavy equipment when you can lay on your back and reach your work without hardly extending your arms. It's like getting paid to weld while laying in bed. Nothing better than being comfortable while welding no matter what position. Maybe a vid on making up a 10' light weight whip line that may be very beneficial to a lot of your viewers. Thanks, Ed K Cleve. Oh.

    I took a vertical and overhead test last week at a shipyard but I'm still waiting on the results, the guy told me they had a big backlog on tests and the anticipation is killing me. I'm pretty sure I crushed the vertical but I lost my body bracing on the overhead filler pass and ended up with a good sized slag pocket that I wasn't allowed to grind out. He told me they looked good enough for me to retest if they failed the bend. I haven't had a full time welding job let alone a cod job in 8 years so the praise I got on my finished pieces felt great. I feel like a boxer coming out of retirement to take back the belt.

    • @jonathonrohde4246
      @jonathonrohde4246 ปีที่แล้ว

      The disadvantage of stringer beads are there width you have to hang out a bit longer in your weld puddle to get a wider bead and sometimes that won't work when welding vertically or over your head.

    Hello, I have a test weld and serve me some tips, this test is to make a butt joint in position 3g with a bevel of 60 ° and with a heel of 2.5 mm. the difficulty lies in making the root (first pass) with a basic electrode 2.5mm. I hope the explanation is understood, I'm from Uruguay and speak little English but always watch your videos. I hope you can give me some advice. Regards.

    I could never keep the puddle from just falling off in globs. How do you keep it in place? Lower amperage? Shorter arc?

    Is there any tips or advice you can give on practicing overhead. I'm in welding school right now and we have to run two beads that overlap using 6010 with a whip and pause. It seems I'm either moving to fast or long arcing and I just can't figure out how to really fix it without doing something else wrong

    What current do you normally use for overhead welding position

    +weldingtipsandtricks Would you kindly do these cert test videos in which you start with a 6010 root pass. Our Instructor requires we do the 6010 root/7018 hot and cover but my root bend never quite makes the cut due to not nipping the edges of the bevel with the 6010. Any methods to this madness??? A video would be beyond greatly appreciated.

    I am just RELEARNING how to weld and find a lot to be frustrating. Everyone I watch seems to run between 1:20 in 160 and using a 6013 or 7018 rod what I'm finding is they or no one is blowing holes in their metal. I'm currently welding quarter inch angle iron and flat stock together and I seem to be melting holes or the edges away from where it needs to be welded. How do I keep from dissolving my metal like a cube of sugar?

    Hello, welders. I would like some advice. I weld metal buildings. I use a speedglas welding hood. Do I make slight movements back and forth? Or do I just move steadily and consistently? I have been welding for a year and I am self taught. I make good metal buildings and I can maintain a consistent bead with decent overlap and can close gaps effectively. But the rod movement always stuns me. Do I stay still? Just moving the rod forward? Or do I make slight nickels?

    Can you do a video on overhead with 6013 rod ? 6013 is really common over here and other types of electrodes are harder to obtain.

    I notice a new rod every pass, the school I went to for my 6g frowned upon wasting rod and made us use them till they were gone, made it hard to re start the arc after stopping

    I'll look through his videos, but does anyone know if they have no backing open root grooves vertical up or overhead.
    I got rusty while my school was out for covid-19, the class is literally waiting on me to finish 4g grove, and then open root 3G vert up.

    what your arc force set at? For my verticals I set the heat at120 arc force at 4 to 5 depending on what I weld.

    great job.... this two piece of iron are thick ... what about thinner pieces should I use same way or what !

    • @k11keeper
      @k11keeper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a 3/8 structural test plate which is the thinner of the two tests I'm aware of. I'm preparing for my 1" vertical here soon. What type of welding are you doing? because for what this test certifies you for this wouldn't be considered thick.
