The women are the stars! You haven't seen anything of Manisha Koirala's!! And Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chadha are well known enough too! The others are also very recognizable from other T.V. series. It wouldn't make sense to use well known male actors when the storyline centers around how influential the courtesans were during the struggle for freedom. Just takes away from the focus.

You did not recognize Manisha Koirala the senior lady named Mallika Jaan? She was the leading lady in Dil Se, Bombay and also starred in SLB's debut film Khamoshi - The Musical. Also you've seen Sonakshi in Lootera, Dabangg.

Just a reminder that Tawaifs (courtesans of Lucknow) were some of the very first choreographers, directors, lyricists and music producers of Hindi Cinema. Hit songs like Hamari atariya, Mohe panghat pe, Aaj jaane ki zid na karo etc were ripped from the streets and halls of the Kothas in Lucknow.

Subtitles didn't do justice
You have seen Manisha in Dil Se (by Mani Ratnam with SRK), Bombay, and Lust Stories (how fab she was). You've seen Sonakshi Sinha's full potential in Lootera with Ranveer. She also led the series Dahaad with Vijay Varma, which you haven’t seen yet. I was really looking forward to this collaboration with SLB; she's perfect in period movies!
Most of the actresses had worked with Bhansali before: Manisha Koirala (Mallikajaan) in Khamoshi, Aditi Rao Hydari (Bibbojaan) in Padmaavat, Richa Chadha (Lajjo) in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Sharmin Segal (Alamzeb) is his niece and was in a film he produced (Malaal).
Aditi Rao Hydari for example is more like a Pan-Indian actress - she has worked in different Indian languages (Kaatru Veliyidai by Mani Ratnam, Sufiyum Sujathayum, Hey Sinamika, Bhoomi, London - Paris - New York, Wazir, Murder 3, Sammohanam, Psycho, Jubilee, Taj: Divided by Blood, ... The list is long!).
Imagine watching a trailer with Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonakshi Sinha, and Richa Chaddha 6 years into watching Indian cinema and only being able to recognise some rando white actor who has been a sidekick in a couple of blockbusters. Surely, these two are not racists. Imagine saying “there are unknown actors in this” 🤣
Aditi Rao Hydari was Ranveer Singh's wife in Padmaavat. Richa Chadha was Deepika's sister-in-law in Ram Leela. And Sonakshi Sinha is also a star on the level of Deepika and Katrina. She is a Dabbang girl. She also starred in the movie Lootera with Ranveer Singh. So this is an amazing cast.

Boggles my mind how after so many years your memory is so short-lived, especially when it comes to female actors. And unlike other youtubers, you don't even bother to check your assumptions or presumptions most of the time. It takes a second to Google. The cast is full of big names! The lead actress is Manisha - you praised her in the teaser, the song and looked up her filmography - already forgotten! You have seen and loved her in Lust stories, Bombay and Dil Se. The antagonist - Sonakshi Sinha - again you have seen her in Lootera, Dabangg and countless songs. Aditi Rao was in Padmavat. The other day in Chamkila trailer you guys acted like this is the first time you have seen or heard of Parineeti Chopra - you have seen her in Kesari, countless trailers and have been told many times she is Priyanka's cousin 🤦♂🤦♂ And yes Sanjay has been composing the music for all of his films since Ram-leela and also composed for Guzaarish.

There is a Bengali movie called Rajkahini directed by Srijit Mukherjee that was later made into a Hindi movie called Begum Jaan directed by the sane director, and the trailer of this movie Heeramandi ,is giving a similar kinda vibes of Rajkahini/Begum Jaan.
Wow! Spectacular feast for the eyes. And yes he has been the composer for several of his films…even though isn’t trained at all! Including Bajirao Mastani, Gangubai and even Padmavat. Perhaps other films too…not sure.

Courtesans in India and other Asian countries weren't prostitues (that's why the British defined them). They have been there for thousands of years, they were highly educated, highly skilled, very wealthy, owned the biggest mansion and used to held high status in the society. They even used to influence the Kings and Rulers.... But when the British came, they took their land, wealth and property and reduced them to a life of just prostitution.

Heeramandi was always to be a series from the start and it has incredible stars who you are not familiar with. The music is by SLB. He has taken two years to make it. Also SLB has done the music for his films since RamLeela.

Its a shame that academy awards are yet to officially award or even acknowledge sanjay leela for any of his work.
Its astonishing to see he hasnt won an oscar yet for DOP/cinematography/direction/music.

Youve seen Manisha multiple times and Sonakshi Sinha too. You have just touched the tip of the iceberg. Time to venture into other actors. I have my favorites for sure and id rather watch them but i have seen and admired many other performers.

Guys, next time, research about the cast before you say they are not well-known actors or stars. Manisha Koirala is one of the biggest female legends of Bollywood along with Tabu, Kajol, Rani, Madhuri, Aish and many more. Sonakshi, Aditi, and Richa offers a fair share of stardom/famous names here. And I know you'll never know unless someone says so, Farida Jalal is in the trailer too, you'll be shock to know that she has been in the biggest movies you have watched in Bollywood.

Since this seems to involve the Indian revolutionary movement,hope he doesn’t botch up historical facts as he is inclined to in almost all his movies. A little historical accuracy with all that beautiful decadence would be nice. Also the brutal business behind all the glamour. Especially since many people get their lessons on history from them. Hopefully they will also include the ‘anti-nautch’ ( Anglicized for dance nach) movement between 1892 and 1910 spearheaded by Christian missionaries on basis of Victorian morality, which ultimately led to the end of the dance/entertainment culture in India and reduced most of them to prostitution. Possibly due to their helping in the 1857 war of independence. It was part of the same movement that also banned classical dances and martial arts.

Actually, Sanjay Bhansali composes the movies in all his movies. He has been composing music for his movies since 2010’s Guzaarish.
However, he composes the songs and not compose the background music
They will release it weekly which Netflix themselves said is very rare but after watching it they think it will be stronger this way and so you can’t binge watch it, it’s far too detailed

The trailer and its scale looked epic.... but a bit cliche as well.
Story seems quite similar to the bengali movie Rajkahini...even the dialogue in the last shot.

Begun jaan was a remake of Bengali movie “rajkahini” (which was better than the Hindi version). This is similar theme (Courtesans in pre independence struggle) but I am really excited about the plot.
A lot of scenes are copied from his own movies…like the mirror scene is same like the khilji scene in padmavat

Tawaifs were very different from prostitutes, it was considered as highly reputed profession, high wealthy families were sending thier little girls to them for learning art, poetry, dancing skills and most importantly good manners, sex was not involved at all.. These tawaifs were extremely wealthy and influential, they funded the 1857 revolution and gave tons of money to freedom fighters, when british got the news, they ran massive smear campaign against them that they are filthy sex workers or prostitutes..
No, some did sleep with their elite clients and introduced their own daughters to the profession.
