Manisha Koirala (Lady dancing in the centre) is working with SLB after 28 years. She was the leading lady in SLB's first directorial debut "Khamoshi - The Musical", opposite Salman Khan. She is a veteran actress, you have watched her in Mani Ratnam's "Dil Se.." and "Bombay".
With Netflix as a streaming platform, Bhansali is winning international Emmy for this one , if nothing else but, for Best Production Design to say the least. Not that he needs to get this recognition but it's high time. Also he had been acquired by CAA just like Rajamouli
This is soulful Indian classical music. Touches hearts. So glad that d 700 yr old song was recreated in this grand style. Thnx to SLB for d wonderful songs.
I think Mr. Bhansali is good at making advertisements for promotion of tourism in India. Thats where he belongs. Certainly not movie making business. I always enjoyed the samosas and pop corns more than any of Bhansali movies till date.
Yup, You guessed it right. Heeramandi was supposed to be a film, and he had been working on it for many years. I guess Netflix just swooped in at a much later stage. SLB has had a list of films and screenplays he's been wanting to make since the beginning of his career - just the technology and scope wasn't available to fulfill his vision or the actors he wanted never materialized. Bajirao Mastani was in development for 11 years, and he was always adamant that he will only make it with Aishwarya and Salman - which obviously never panned out because of their relationship history. But Sanjay finally did cave in and make it. Next is going to be Baiju Bawra and I'm beyond excited for that one!
@@tusharkumarpoddar1513 I was talking about the list of his long-time passion projects which he has been wanting to make for a long time - baiju bawara is the next of those. Love & war isnt something he has been talking about for decades.
SLB will continue to hack away at the classics such as Devdas and now Baiju Bawra, ugly over the top confections of excess. He can’t extract the beauty from the originals he settles for injecting them with cinematic steroid.
I like the way korbi is squatting, total desi😂 and the way they move their heads side to side with the rhythm. You are sooooo into it . Great to see u turning Desi.
Each frame of this whole series is a work of art. Nothing is a neglected.. it's pure and real instruments, voices, sets.. a lot can be done with CGI but Sanjay just thinks of CGI as a post production utility.. it's not part of the shoot.. Cinematographer you sir did an amazing job.
I would looooove to see Heeramandi on the big screen 😍 The main woman - as you call her - is Manisha Koirala as Mallikajaan. She waits for Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal) alongside with Waheeda on the left (Sanjeeda Shaikh) and Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari) on the right side. The last one that enters the scene is Lajjo (Richa Chadha). The one that's missing is Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha).
Trust me if India started to show her culture, tradition, dance, science. Etc...none of the world will survive.....Its like u need Divine vision and mindset to understand Bharat.....
The male lead Vocalist is "Raja Hassan".. for decades he kept saying that if an unknown singer can sing well in cases better than the original should be allowed to showcase their talent regardless of name... Vindicated.. Also interesting fact is that this song was composed by the great Amir Khusro for the Hindu festival of Basant panchami.. It was composed 700 years ago. Mustard flowers are offered to Maa Sarswati ( godess of music art and knowledge) .. so he took mustard flowers to his Nizamuddin Auliya in the area of Delhi and he said I have brought mustard flowers for you my lord. Even today on every Basant panchami Nizamuddin Auliya's final resting place we continue to offer Mustard flowers and sheets of Mustard colour.
So Rick your observation on the walls and set matching the costumes is spot on, since the song is about "Basant"- denotes the spring season that is represented by the color yellow. And this song is actually a poem written by the great Amir Khusro and depicts the arrival of spring in forms of vibrant colors , mustard seeds, flowers and singing birds :)
If you want to know, it's the Basant Panchmi festival that's celebrated in the dargah of Nizamuddin Aulia, which is also commemorated through this song.
Manisha is from the age of Madhuri Dixit, so many great dancers have come since then. But Manisha Koirala is a master class right here and she is working with the new generation who go to the gym to stay aesthetic.. There are very few directors that can handle high budgets to make every rupee spent show on screen, but not take away from the story and direction. Rajamouli is brilliant because he keeps a tight screenplay with focus on emotionally connecting each character to you and having you invest in them. Bansali makes stunning visuals that lights up the screens with sheer grandeur. I personally don’t care for either of their story selections, they are simple stories that are told well by the directors. Totally different genre, totally different types of directors
The song is very soulful with good dancing beat, lacking dancing abilities here but i know Manisha and Richa is supremely good actors. I hope some day SLB will bring Madhuri and Aishwarya so that people can rejoice the classic dance which is almost non existent post Devdas in SLB's movie.
His obsession actually comes from 2 things…. 1. His childhood: He grew up near the red light district in Mumbai and recalls some of the kindest and most remarkable women he encountered as a child were prostitutes in Mumbai’s red light districts. And 2. The film Pakeezah. Apparently this film is was got Sanjay interesting in film making and he says that Pakeezah’s cinematography, the costumes, music, choreography, and Meena Kumari’s character (which was a courtesan) all felt very beautiful to him and he uses Meena Kumari as a muse for many of his female characters. If you watch Devdas and compare Pakeezah’s courtesan to Devdas’ Chandramukhi, you will spot thd influence. He used a lot of direct references from Pakeezah, one of many being the iconic water fountain scene where Pakeezah lays down and floats her hair in the fountain…. Sanjay copied that exact scene in Devdas. Also the costume in “Maar Daala” and the brothel setting in Devdas takes direct influence from Pakeezah’s costume in “Thare Rahiyo” as well as the brothel setting seen in “Inhi Loho Ne”. The details are small but if you watch movies enough times, they will stick out as clear as water to you!
Also SLB is master of period films and art, music, history.... if you think about it the courtesans would have been masters in music and dance at the time and carried these traditions forward. I feel like he is highlighting their mastery of their craft here....
