The courtesans or "tawaifs' were indeed incredibly powerful. There used to be a distinction where the Tawaifs were different from generic sex workers. They were once highly valued as connoisseurs of art and adab, and young men were supposed to learn about appreciation of music, poetry, art ,dancing, even things like social etiquettes etc from them. Sex was sometimes not involved at all, since a highly regarded courtesan was untouchable. When you talk about the girls at perhaps the lower levels those were what became first defined as the nautch girls 'dancing girls' by the Brits and exoticised. Yet historical record shows these women were among the few that owned their own property, had tons of gold, and were also educated in many ways. Once the freedom struggle started a lot of wealthy courtesans and famous madams gave money to the freedom fighters, supported the cause by providing valuable intel, and influencing powerful men. The brits did embark on a massive smear campaign against them which to this day have reduced their image to that of a lowly prostitute. There are i believe some very interesting historical papers about the Tawaifs and the Indian struggle for independence.
When cinema came to India, most actress in the early days were either ex-courtesans or daughters of courtesans, since their skill in dancing and music and their beauty was already unmatched.

Now that place is in so bad condition and disliked place by alot of people because of the bad image. Now it lost all of its charm. I went there 2 times just to see as we heard its name that much it made me go so when i first time went to lahore city my first place to go was heeramandi

I also noticed the subtitles in the trailer are slightly different than the subtitles in the full show. The trailer ones seem better at getting the nuance across, the show ones are a bit more... literal? Which is a shame.

The directors/creatives themselves have to send their name and work for oscar consideration. The oscars dont seek out creatives to give out awards.
So if you think that our directors(and other industry professionals) are not receiving recognition, then its probably because they didn't care about oscars in the first place and didn't send their work for nomination.
I didn't see his works in any OSCAR submission lists. He didn't send any , if he did at least for visual, costume design, cinematography etc nominated for sure.

2:03 The dancers dancing in the windows and balconies is a very iconic image for courtesan movies. It was prominently seen in older movies like Pakeezah, Umrao jaan. SLB later showed similar visuals in Devdas and Gangubai kathiavadi.

Yeah exactly! That's best seen in "Inhi Logo Ne Le Leena" of Pakeezah! Tawaif movies are a treat of great visuals & apt depictions of Urdu culture of north India btw!

I absolutely love seeing people who are not local to South Asia to start and appreciate the aesthetic of South Asian cinema! It is always great to see the film and television transcends borders and languages.
So glad to see Manisha Koirala and Farida Jalal in this. Also noticed Fardeen Khan in the trailer, guess he's making a comeback after 14 years. Pretty big cast, hope this works out well for them.

Yes it is a true story with minor tweaks. The same story was made as a film called Rajkahini in Bengali and Begam Jaan in hindi with Vidya Balan as the main lead.

Begam jaan is slightly different though, and deals more with near partition time and it's impact.
To watch a beautiful series about the black and white era, and a storyline based on filmmakers of the era and how films were made back then in Bollywood, watch "JUBILEE" It's genuinely such a good show, that presents that era soo well, not the mention the songs from that series are ABSOLUTE GOLD So if you plan to explore more about that era, films and music, "JUBILEE" is the SHOW for you !!!

It is basically a very rich and upgraded version of a very popular bengali (also Indian) movie called- Rajkahini. Please do watch it,its the OG one.There is also a hindi movie of the same bengali movie called Begum Jaan and Vidya Balan is there in it.

Heeramandi as a place can be in Pakistan, but these cultural influences & language is Urdu culture- from Awadh (esp Lucknow) & western Uttar Pradesh, India, not Lahore or Pakistan.
Minor factual correction: This is when mother INDIA was in its original state during British Rule and before breaking a piece of it to bring Pakistan, its child country to existence
It's amazing how every time the pre-partition subcontinent is mentioned it's always assumed to be current-day India. Pakistan and Bangladesh are never part of the conversation 😂
