Great tutorial! Quick "rule of thumb" tip for mining craft, for each large cargo container, you'll want ~1.5 large thrusters/equivalent thrust for lift, barring other equipment, in 1g (9.8m/s^2) of gravity. Generally for mining craft, 2x large (lifting) thrusters are a good basis unless you go for some crazy amount of drills or more cargo containers. Thankfully, the lift/weight ratio works roughly the same for small vs large grid builds, and KSH has now normalized masses for ore, so you don't need to worry about which ore types you're planning to mine (used to be different for specific ore types)! Side note, if you use different inventory limit settings, SE does some "handwavium" factoring on the inventory blocks' stored mass, so the mass/lift effectively becomes percentage of total block capacity base, meaning the same amount of lift thrusters works for all inventory settings now!
@@Zer0sLegion I think the easiest way to explain it is the inventory setting applies a hidden modifier to the cargo containers "internal" inventory mass calculations. So regardless of settings, the same amount of thrust will lift the same capacity percentage amount. For example, if you have enough lift for a large cargo container to hold n% of it's volume at nL mass, the same ship can be used unmodified with all inventory settings as long as you maintain the same volume % of those contents. So if your cargo has 10k iron ore, and lets say that is 50% of the capacity on Normal settings, if you go up to the 10x setting, the ship can now lift 100k (assuming it is still 50% or less) of ore cargo capacity w/o adding thrusters, as the mass per unit vs thrust ratio is maintained by the "hidden" factor value TL;DR - You can see this in action by removing the cargo container/contents, and adding raw mass to the ship via blocks. Thanks for your feedback, I don't want to go over your feedback point by point but I will say this is meant to be a beginners tutorial, it's probably not the best time to be explaining how to use scripts to mine.
Downwards thrust is required on miners because it becomes sideways thrust if you point your nose down. Without it you'll crash the roof of your miner into the tunnel wall if you try to mine straight down.
I think it should be noted that for the the connector there is an option that makes it not for landing and if you turn that ON on the main ship then pressing p on the main ship will not activate
Almost a year later im sitting here and try counting the small blocks for the base of this beauty 😂 pls tell me im not the only one pausing the video while its fast forward xD lovely ship buddy. Just got the game a few days ago and im telling you... my 'mining ship' is useless compared to this. I cant even fly straight down 😅
BRO this video is GOLD homie! Lol... Such a great vid for beginners/noobs. I'm still new. Owned it since Halloween, was on sale for ten bucks. But hard finding much other than ship/rover designs. First ship done this morning, spent like 4 hrs just to return it to earth and see I was going too fast with too little thrust to fight the gravity, and boom! Lol... Seeing all the thrusters here, I see 2 wasn't enough. I used all hydro thrusters as well, dunno if that would've made the diff. Anyways, liked and subscribed... Keep up the good work
As of the Heavy Industry update, as long as you set up your connectors and landing gears properly, it is no loner a bad idea to press P. That being said, it's on you to set your grid up properly for your own purposes.
This took me hours to emulate as it was hard to see where you where placing thrusters and what orientation, not to mention shit jumping around between cuts, thoroughly enjoyed it though XD
Good information in this tutorial. My only feedback is that at the rate you are speaking you are assuming the audience is 110% familiar with the game already, and that they have some apparently advanced stuff unlocked when they start this (I'm building my first mining ship using this as a template and I note I don't have cameras unlocked for example).
@@Zer0sLegion ok thanks. I did some reading and pressing middle mouse button while using drills can switch to all instead of just one. I then built a turret thingy and the same thing happened so I did the middle mouse button but only 2 of 3 guns worked still. So idk. But thank you still
there is a nice little rant on Splitsies last speed run video where Splitsie argues for horizontal mining when on a planet/moon ... It's quite a point, because on planets you would need at least very strong directional thrust up and backwards, which makes every design challenging ... edit: Thx for the Chart! very useful! I guess getting to a full Refinery with four Yield modules is the way to go asap... what would you suggest?
Just started 2 days ago. Your vids are helping me SOOO much! Thx a lot! How do i find Ice? Searched in circles around my spawn but there was only savanna and desert. Is there some sort of compas?
How does your storage container have 46k storage? Mine only has 15 for some reason. >_< I also had to add more batteries because it was saying that my thrusters weren't getting enough energy to work properly.
You can increase the cargo container size in the world settings, something I plan to cover in the future. The ship I built had just enough battery power to stay in the air.
Things that are not mentioned in the video; -How to find ore on planets (Dark spots on the ground, or ore detector being set to max range) -Adding more batteries will increase flight time -Adding pistons to the drills may help in some mining scenarios -Making a large grid drill ship is more efficient when you have the resources. -Avoid Pressing "P" and using the groups to avoid wasted power -Solar panels on the roof of your ship to help sustain flight, and prevent getting stranded. -Discussing weight of the ship as you mine more things.(more weight may cause your ship to sink due to lack of thrust) -Light armor vs heavy armor differences, and again, the weight consideration -Grouping assemblers for faster processing.
-Didn't mention ores as it was done in the last video -I mean, seems obvious -Didn't think pistons would be relevant to building your first ship -True, but this is first ship, I very much doubt your first ship ever is going to be a large one. Future tutorials would have covered this -Pressing P doesn't really matter as you can toggle breaking on things you don't want to toggle on P and I'm pretty sure I do 100% cover using groups -True, if you wanted to wait a billion years for them to recharge. Part of the reason in the last video I suggested building a base near the 3 mains ores -Do you really need to cover this in detail, I mentioned that you need to make sure your ship can take off at max cargo, I feel like why that is is self explanatory -Your first ship does not need heavy armour, irrelevant to the video -At this point in the tutorial series, we had a basic assembler, why would I bring up anything more advanced about them, especially in a video about building your first ship. Hope that covers your points😊
@@Zer0sLegion I partially take back what I wrote. I didn't realize you had other videos covering those topics. The only reason I wished you covered weight more is the frustrating moment of a mining ship sinking into the mineshaft you made crashing on impact. It happens to the best of us.
This video needs an update...cause you say to press P to park the ship! P!! How dare you teach how to mess up with everything??? Please reconsider this video, and do a new one!
Yo, Mr. Zer0, I don't see this ship in the Workshop. Why the tease without the payoff? unless I've missed the link in the description... It may be just that I drank some water after midnight, and a Gremlin is loose, but there are cuts in editing of the video for your build, such that I'd have to experiment to get it right. I can't find an atmospheric miner that can go vertical nose down and get back up. Either way _the excel spreadsheet for all the costs and stuff was something I've been looking_ for which I have to say many thanks!
Hiya, I think you posted in the discord as well so I'll repeat what I said there here: I can upload it to the workshop but it's probably better if you experiment yourself and build you own ship. The ship I've built is by no means the best or most efficient so I wouldn't recommend building it just cause I have.
@@Zer0sLegion I hadn't seen your discord server prior to making this comment. I didn't see it up yesterday (EST) but I'll check today too. If you list your workshop name/title, that probably will make it way easier to search for, because Steam's workshop search engine is a demonstration of absolute incompetence... it's amazing to this day, it still isn't as good as a place like Nexusmods' search engine years ago.
Noob here. I'm using atmospherig thrusters, but no matter what I do: I cannot seem to get my ship moving. Their switched on and have power. But nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Wondering if the game has changed in the last 4 months? When im building ships from tutorials my balance is off and my nose or back dips due to weight (drills or cargo) or drifts on oneside. I might be missing something as i only just started playing this game. anyone can help?
@Zer0sLegion I suppose... But at those early stages, I'd recommend building the cheepest, most disposable miner possible. Or better yet, skipping the miner altogether and moving straight to a piston based mining rig. Much simpler and safer to operate. Much smaller chance of slamming into a wall at high speeds. I personally prefer to use the Path Auto Miner script to set up the low-budget version of my Crayola miner, but since this video is vanilla, I don't think that's entirely relevant.
Thank you for the knowledge you give us during the video. If I was to give you a little bit of constructive criticism. You tend to shake your mouse a lot when you are trying to explain something your looking at. I have never been seasick a day in my life, until I watched your videos. Lol.
i've just one complain: please find a better way to mark things... shaking the screen causes seasickness to me 😢 Plus now the "P" key got *FIXED* (finally!) You can set landing gears and other stuff as "parking" or not. If not for parking they won't disconnect!
i prefer to build a big fuck off crane - piston rotating drill. makes sure you give it a counter weight arm, to stop it wobbling, but jesus christ, a crane - piston drill can fill 6 huge containers up in minutes try to build your base on the edge of an ice lake, so when its time to fill up hydrogen tanks, you can just rotate your crane drill over the ice, and stock up in minutes
Fast forward through me placing a flat plane of blocks? Do you really want to see that? As I said in the video, this guide is how to build a ship, not to build this exact ship, I ever say in the video that this isn't a very good ship. And with regards to cobalt, we found that in the last video, which I also say at the beginning of the video and cobalt is required to build a ship so I can't exactly make a video about building a ship without it.
once criticizm on a great tutorial - you talk real fast through it and its hard to follow without pausing loads. May I suggest slowing down a bit when you're explaining things.
Thx for those videos ! You help a lot noobs like me. Could you please speak slower and more clearly ? Im not a native english speaker and sometimes I have to reroll the video to understand what you are saying. Gg for the content anyways
I've seen about 12 different tutorials so far... All of you say many of the same things, but not one person has been able to specify something... How do you "lock" ships? Everyone says "lock your ship/rover" about 20 times a video. No one thinks to say how the heck you do that... :S
As I said at the beginning of the video, this is the third part in a series of tutorials. It was explaining in part two where I went over building rovers.
@@Zer0sLegion That's my bad. Apparently I didn't even understand exactly what I was asking. Apparently you can go into the g menu and set it up from the cockpit to lock connectors without utilizing the parking function, as well as remove the ability for connectors to be effected by the parking function in the control panel menu. I wasn't aware parking and locking are separate, but similar functions. I'm still very new, but finally got a cargo rover with a couple docking stations set up for a miner ship and hooking up to the base for unload and charging. You're good, I'm just an idiot at this still. :)
Honestly could be a little more thorough. Like show us how you built what you built, you're skipping sections and I'm missing stuff. I basically had to figure all this out on my own.
As a tutorial it sadly failed to give a good look around the ship to show where to place thrusters. I had to seek back and forth though the whole video to find different view angles
This video is about showing you how to build a ship, not telling you what to do. I even say in the video, this is not a good ship, it's just an example of what to do.
Everything is very strangely done, but acceptable if it's a rough example of how it should have worked. otherwise, the same onboard engines are easily damaged ... Guys, seriously, you should not repeat, but understand the principle, and build it yourself many times better, since this is an example, although not very good.
Your camera movement is pretty damn chaotic, and overall everything moves a bit too quickly. Slow it down significantly and you've got a great video. Thanks for your hard work though, very informative otherwise.

Downwards thrust is required on miners because it becomes sideways thrust if you point your nose down. Without it you'll crash the roof of your miner into the tunnel wall if you try to mine straight down.
Love the video. More please!
Coming soon™
I think it should be noted that for the the connector there is an option that makes it not for landing and if you turn that ON on the main ship then pressing p on the main ship will not activate
I did that for my main ship and it ended up being a major help!
One suggestion I have for testing performance under load with ships and rovers, is to fill all cargo holding blocks with gravel
Why gravel? Because it’s the most common material?

Almost a year later im sitting here and try counting the small blocks for the base of this beauty 😂 pls tell me im not the only one pausing the video while its fast forward xD lovely ship buddy. Just got the game a few days ago and im telling you... my 'mining ship' is useless compared to this. I cant even fly straight down 😅
You have the quality of a million sub youtuber, nice job, I like the content.
Thanks
BRO this video is GOLD homie! Lol... Such a great vid for beginners/noobs. I'm still new. Owned it since Halloween, was on sale for ten bucks. But hard finding much other than ship/rover designs. First ship done this morning, spent like 4 hrs just to return it to earth and see I was going too fast with too little thrust to fight the gravity, and boom! Lol... Seeing all the thrusters here, I see 2 wasn't enough. I used all hydro thrusters as well, dunno if that would've made the diff. Anyways, liked and subscribed... Keep up the good work
Thanks
It’s a shame the series stopped here. It was just getting good and was super informative up to this point.
I did further tutorials about the game, just about more general things as apposed to directed through survival.
Can you continue the series? maybe advanced tutorials on improving the base and upgrading your machinery/rover/ship?
I will be yes, it might just take a different form
Was looking for exactly this thanks
Yeah, after my 9 km trip using the drop pod turned mining ship, and it crashing 3 times, a new ship is just what I need.
As of the Heavy Industry update, as long as you set up your connectors and landing gears properly, it is no loner a bad idea to press P. That being said, it's on you to set your grid up properly for your own purposes.
I played recently and pressing P disconnected all my attached ships. I'd still not recommend getting into a habit of using it.
This took me hours to emulate as it was hard to see where you where placing thrusters and what orientation, not to mention shit jumping around between cuts, thoroughly enjoyed it though XD
I wouldn't copy my design exactly, just place thrusters in all directions and you should be fine.
@@Zer0sLegion Thanks man (: it was fun messing around & I learned a lot.
ETA on the next ship video?
@@Utubebandit89 No promises but probably this year 😅
@@Zer0sLegion Until the thrusters expand out too much and bump all over the tunnel you are digging....
why the downward thrusters on a atmos, it only increases chance of crashing when landing with full cargocontainers. especially for newer players.
For when you're pointing nose down, you need them to maneuver. Or when you "land" on you side 😋
@@Zer0sLegion also i remember the ai really doesnt like to be missing a side to drive your ship
You can build a "plunge" miner with drills on the bottom so you don't risk rolling over.
"I'm going to press P to park"
Splitsie: "And I took that personally"
If Capac didn't exist, Splitsie wouldn't have a problem with the P button
Do do you need a antenna to use remote access
Yes.
Great video - just a little dizzy though when you spinning around so fast. Subscribed 👍
Feels like my brain is melting trying to follow all the hotbar stuff, never could figure it all out
You'll get the hang of it over time, just takes some getting use to.
It is the third part of the series, I did say that in the video.
New player here! Why do you connect the cockpit and the cargo container?
You don't have to really for a planetary ship but it's good practice for the future when you need to have oxygen and hydrogen in your cockpit
@@Zer0sLegion ohhhh I see! Thank you for the quick reply!
8:09 i built my own ship and got too much thrusters foward and only few going back and my ship crushed into the ground 10/10
Hey mate, i know the video is a bit old but i wanted to ask you how to make the stone go in the big storage, because mine stay in the drills
It should go into the other storage automatically if it's connected.
When putting drills into the hotbar for use, only one spins when I use it. Help please
I had that bug when making this video, I removed all of the drills and readded them and that fixed it
@@Zer0sLegion ok thanks. I did some reading and pressing middle mouse button while using drills can switch to all instead of just one. I then built a turret thingy and the same thing happened so I did the middle mouse button but only 2 of 3 guns worked still. So idk. But thank you still
Very informative video set!
there is a nice little rant on Splitsies last speed run video where Splitsie argues for horizontal mining when on a planet/moon ... It's quite a point, because on planets you would need at least very strong directional thrust up and backwards, which makes every design challenging ... edit: Thx for the Chart! very useful! I guess getting to a full Refinery with four Yield modules is the way to go asap... what would you suggest?
Anything that reduces the amount of mining I have to do the better! More Yield!
A little tip, you don’t have to group spot lights. Pressing L while in a cockpit or control seat will turn spotlights on and off.
Yeah, I normally have multiple sets of lights on my ships so I normally don't use L
Amazing video! Subscribed to your channel
I like to put the ore detector in the bottom of the ship for the greatest amount of coverage of the ground.
You are technically correct but I'm not sure the 0.5m closer to the ground is going to make much difference lol 😅
Hey zer0 sorry for another Qn, but i couldnt find cobalt with my ore detector (mountains) so do i just build the ship first?
You can't build a ship without cobalt, you can't build thrusters
If you've snow there is probably lakes. I found cobalt there.
Thanks I'll check it out @SStone866
Just started 2 days ago. Your vids are helping me SOOO much! Thx a lot! How do i find Ice? Searched in circles around my spawn but there was only savanna and desert. Is there some sort of compas?
You can mine snow to get small amounts of it but otherwise it's just about flying around until you find it.
I personally build a very small and efficient flyer and zip around marking GPS positions to come back to later with my bigger, inefficient drillers.
will you make a 4 video in this series?
One day
How do I make the jump drives work🤔I've tried everything and it doesn't let me put the jump action into my toolbar🤔
If it's on the ship, you should just be able to add it to the toolbar...
@@Zer0sLegion it doesn't pop up
I keep having problems with gravity, when I build a ship it tips over and I can’t get things placed down
Landing gear first
How does your storage container have 46k storage? Mine only has 15 for some reason. >_<
I also had to add more batteries because it was saying that my thrusters weren't getting enough energy to work properly.
You can increase the cargo container size in the world settings, something I plan to cover in the future.
The ship I built had just enough battery power to stay in the air.
how do I turn the blocks around for my design?
Insert, home, page up, delete, end and page down. I covered that in my first tutorial video.
@@Zer0sLegion thanks dude
Things that are not mentioned in the video;
-How to find ore on planets (Dark spots on the ground, or ore detector being set to max range)
-Adding more batteries will increase flight time
-Adding pistons to the drills may help in some mining scenarios
-Making a large grid drill ship is more efficient when you have the resources.
-Avoid Pressing "P" and using the groups to avoid wasted power
-Solar panels on the roof of your ship to help sustain flight, and prevent getting stranded.
-Discussing weight of the ship as you mine more things.(more weight may cause your ship to sink due to lack of thrust)
-Light armor vs heavy armor differences, and again, the weight consideration
-Grouping assemblers for faster processing.
-Didn't mention ores as it was done in the last video
-I mean, seems obvious
-Didn't think pistons would be relevant to building your first ship
-True, but this is first ship, I very much doubt your first ship ever is going to be a large one. Future tutorials would have covered this
-Pressing P doesn't really matter as you can toggle breaking on things you don't want to toggle on P and I'm pretty sure I do 100% cover using groups
-True, if you wanted to wait a billion years for them to recharge. Part of the reason in the last video I suggested building a base near the 3 mains ores
-Do you really need to cover this in detail, I mentioned that you need to make sure your ship can take off at max cargo, I feel like why that is is self explanatory
-Your first ship does not need heavy armour, irrelevant to the video
-At this point in the tutorial series, we had a basic assembler, why would I bring up anything more advanced about them, especially in a video about building your first ship.
I bought this game thinking it was similar to trail makers😂 I had no idea how complicated it is😂😭
This video needs an update...cause you say to press P to park the ship! P!! How dare you teach how to mess up with everything??? Please reconsider this video, and do a new one!
💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
maybe i placed the thrusters wrong but i keep moving in the left when im not touching my keyboard i think its even weight on all sides so im confused
i didn't have left right thrusters i fixed it thanks for the cool ship design
glad you figured it out!
Nice tutorial but omg the camera shake was making me dizzy lol
Yeah, sorry 😅
Noob here. I'm using atmospherig thrusters, but no matter what I do: I cannot seem to get my ship moving. Their switched on and have power. But nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
Never mind. Didn't bring enough batteries! :D
seems like you figured it out!
can't even charge my batteries in my base using this design. is there any patch fix? im new to the game
No change, you're probably using more energy that you're producing.
@@Zer0sLegion do you have video to explain effective energy usage or something like that?

Wondering if the game has changed in the last 4 months? When im building ships from tutorials my balance is off and my nose or back dips due to weight (drills or cargo) or drifts on oneside. I might be missing something as i only just started playing this game. anyone can help?
Nothing has since the last update and generally, the weight of the ship is simulated from it's centre.
Why did you insist on running conveyors along the sides when they were already connected through the cockpit?
Redundancy, I ran it at the front and the sides in case there was damage.
Balancing the dang thing is hard. mine gets too heavy
I feel like you need way too many thrusters to keep it in the sky. Or maybe I just want too much storage lol
@@Zer0sLegion It's not unreasonable seeing as it seems to take an unreasonable amount of resources to build anything nice
Top notch
Thanks!
Thank you for the knowledge you give us during the video. If I was to give you a little bit of constructive criticism. You tend to shake your mouse a lot when you are trying to explain something your looking at. I have never been seasick a day in my life, until I watched your videos. Lol.

Yeap, I've stopped doing that in later videos

i prefer to build a big fuck off crane - piston rotating drill. makes sure you give it a counter weight arm, to stop it wobbling, but jesus christ, a crane - piston drill can fill 6 huge containers up in minutes try to build your base on the edge of an ice lake, so when its time to fill up hydrogen tanks, you can just rotate your crane drill over the ice, and stock up in minutes
Don't I have one of these in the background of this video, I honestly can't remember

Beginner? Hey, let's fast forward everything and make sure to use cobalt which can be tricky to find! Thanks, but no thanks.

@@Zer0sLegion NP, I subscribed. You have great content man ..

This video is to show you how to build a ship, not how to build the specific ship shown in the video.
As a tutorial it sadly failed to give a good look around the ship to show where to place thrusters. I had to seek back and forth though the whole video to find different view angles
This video is about showing you how to build a ship, not telling you what to do. I even say in the video, this is not a good ship, it's just an example of what to do.
Who's the HOTTIE in the cover? Obviously not the one narrating.
Wow, rude. Not telling you now.

Don't build the exact same ship, build your own design
Everything is very strangely done, but acceptable if it's a rough example of how it should have worked.
otherwise, the same onboard engines are easily damaged ...
Guys, seriously, you should not repeat, but understand the principle, and build it yourself many times better, since this is an example, although not very good.
The ship could barely fly as it was, putting armour on the thrusters would have just bee extra weight 😅
That's why I called it a rough example. 🙃
Your camera movement is pretty damn chaotic, and overall everything moves a bit too quickly. Slow it down significantly and you've got a great video. Thanks for your hard work though, very informative otherwise.
