I flew to Pakistan for Quetta Chai 🇵🇰

- I'm back in Pakistan after nearly 2 years having not been back here. Last time I came to Pakistan I flew into Karachi, but the flight was awful, arriving at 2am and taking another 2 hours to get through immigration.
This time I thought I'd try my luck and fly into Pakistan's capital of Islamabad, as it's much calmer than the other cities.
I made it through immigration by around 10pm which is pretty early compared to my previous trip.
Normally after arriving in a country I try to get cash out from the ATM as soon as possible, but Pakistan is weird in that foreign cards only were at a few very specific ATM's, none of which are at the airport, so I was cashless upon arrival as it's difficult to get Pakistani Rupees abroad since it's not a popular currency.
Right as I left the ATM area I was approached by this friendly taxi driver Faheem who offered to take me to my hotel for 5000 PKR, which is nearly double what I've paid in the past for a taxi in Islamabad.
Inflation in Pakistan is pretty crazy at the moment so it's understandable that the price has gone up. I still think I got a bit overcharged, but when you're stranded at 10pm without any cash at the airport, you don't have much to bargain with.
Faheem took me for my favorite drink of Quetta chai, before then taking me to an ATM and onward to my hotel.

For about 4000 pkr you can rent a nice Toyota newer model with driver per day, just add your own gas. 5000 price point is outrageous, its sad that he even knew that he is being recorded, and knows that people will see it. If people just realized that just by being honest and a nice person you would have most likely gotten a lot more then what you originally asked for.
Not justifying his actions. But times have changed and we have hardly taught our people not to lie, cheat etc. If the person from the peon to the top ministers fleece the money, you can't expect an average person not to do so when they get a chance.

lekin yeh chris bhi to laloo aadmi hai eikdum jhatulal hai, jahan urdu bolni chahiye waha bolta nahi aur jaha bin urdu ke kaam chak sakta hai waha yeh urdu main baat karta rehta hai , i have noticed many a times in india and pakistan that kisi gareeb waiter, hotel porter, streetvendor se yeh eng main baat karne lag jata hai, waha yeh aaram se hindi/urdu main sawaal pooch sakta hai lekin waha yeh apne weird american accent main baat karne lag jatabhai aur gareeb log bechare iski baat samajh nahi paate aur jab yeh kisi well to do indian ya pakistani se milta hai tab yeh urdu ya hindi main kuch na kuch bolta rehta hai, ajeeb insaan hain yeh

If you aren't getting any rides on Careem there are two more alternative cab services in Islamabad which are Indrive and Yango . I prefer Yango as it is new and customer friendly for now.

Your description mentioning Karachi is spot on, even though I never landed into Karachi , however I have flown out of it and it took a while to reach the gate. The airport is really bigger than islamabads but then 10x more chaotic as well. Mainly I land in Islamabad and usually I have a smooth process just the luggage can arrive late at times, funny enough my most recent trip everyone's luggage came out quicker than expected. Try visiting the northern areas as well if you have the time, you won't regret it trust me.

5000 is a high fare you paid.. the taxi driver seemed fishy from the start with his over friendly attitude. Please stay away from overly friendly people, they are always looking to derive some benefit of their own

I think the petrol is very expensive these days . The value of rupees has fallen so much. I can't really blame the taxi driver .

The fish that they were offering you rates at 2000 to 4000 rupees. They also use very tasty marination. You could have recovered a great sum if you had that free tasty fish.

Chris, you have very high standards for rooms. I can find some,in Lahore, for as low a €2 a night, but seriously, I can find loads for 10 to 12 a night

basically if you just click on that search button you wont find any careem at this time in islamabad right now, local taxi apps are good for like 8 in the evening but after that its very hard to find a taxi, so maybe the taxi driver charged you for the late night time on which he was able to operate and not many other taxi drivers.
Also mostly the only bank my cards works when I visit my home in Karachi is SCB atm machines

Chris, this time you must go to Kartarpura Food Street in Rawalpindi. A lot of food shops are open 24 hours, but definitely try to go early morning, as you will get fresh Nihari, Paya, Channa there. And you also must try Sweet Lassi from Kashmir Milk Shop on the same food street.
