See, according to census and data, even the "poor" in the city donot represent how real poor people live in India. In cities, the poor are lazy, arrogant people. You shouldn't help them. Delhi is one of the largest cities in the world, they have everything they need yet they choose to beg.
If you really want to help poor people in India, visit states like Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odishha etc. They work hard that's why they are satisfied with their life even if they are poor. And so, when you help them, they are grateful.
This kid needs to go to school. Delhi has free school education, free food at school...Don't spend a single penny on them, not even on food.

I am Indian/American and living in California USA. We also have the same experience when we visit in India.I do help poor people who work hard and don't begg. One thing is bothering me that everyone is calling this "annoying kid" poor people. They are not poor but they choose to beg. This annoying kid maybe 11 years old and already begging and may be That's what he is gonna do for rest of his life, because he is not in the school where high school Education is free with free food. Man selling coconut is working 15 hours a day, and he came from Bihar to work. That's what poor people do. They work hard and don't beg and are satisfied with their earnings. "Auto rikshaw" man, Chris gave him 200 rupees, and his face lit up after getting 200 rupees instead of 70, and he came from outer state to work.I think he deserves 200 rupees because he is working hard. Poor people are working hard 12 to 15 hours a day. This annoying kid was also ungrateful eventhogh Chris paid for his paneer roti and lassi, and didn't say thanks but kept saying that you didn't help me because he was aspecting cash.Chris was smart enough to not to go with him. Visitors feel so frustrated when these beggers follow you long period of time.

This happened to me one time. Two girls were selling pen and they were in need. I purchased a pen for 4 times the price to help one girl but then next girl also started using the same tactic to sell me another pen. I told her humbly that I cannot buy another pen so she abused me verbally in public even though I had helped her friend. I walked minding my own business. I thought may be it was best not to help poor people but I just shrugged it off. Thank you for showing an omnipresent slice of ordinary interaction on many streets of India. Unlike anywhere else in the world, India challenge the traveler to confront the contradictions and failure of modern economic and social development. It does this on a spectacularly personal level, challenging us to examine not only who we are as humans, but the state of the world for others. Here, the impulse was to treat this kid with kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness. But where there are blatant inequities, a struggle for financial solvency and a future with no social or economic mobility, other rules apply. And who can blame them? I used to think that global travel, international social media and the internet would help. But no, globalization has has had a mixed record. Travelers from wealthy nations, especially white skinned travelers, face the contradictions and moral hazards of travel, especially in India. I, like Chris, love to travel and reach out to everyone, but I also try to be mindful of the fact that I am one of thousands alien passengers, to be fed, entertained and enjoyed, but in the end, forgotten in the parade of the next one in ine. I think the best way to help others is to allow India to put a mirror to yourself, your behavior, and how best to be a mindful visitor. The depressing and sad truth is, that there are economic, class, cultural and societal hurdles far too challenging for visitors. . So travelers will learn this lesson while maintaining their own norms. I shall always love India for its sights, hospitality, food and culture. But most of all India can be a personal journey of self awareness, of a lesson uncomfortable truths, and for many, a unique spiritual escape.

Most of the Muslim eateries in the north of India are unhygienic but the food is really tasty! But not all muslim places are like that....there are a few places that are hygienic as well as tasty....but yeah...the majority (like maybe 75%) are unhygienic
Whereas in the south of India,I've rather noticed a general average standard amongst all the eateries..... except in Karnataka....there also most muslim eateries are unhygienic but tasty at the same time 😅

You are amazing for an American to have learned just watching movies. And one thing for an advice. Dont eat any uncooked food or cold drinks like lassi / the bottle soda you had etc. The handling of food with dirty hands and general hygiene is very questionable. And the final thing dont engage with anyone like the kid you were with. They will be pests knowing your compassion.
