Uganda's Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei who competed at the Paris Olympics dies in Kenya. Cheptegei was set on fire reportedly by her boyfriend. The athlete was getting treated in a hospital in Eldoret but she failed to recover after suffering extensive burns. Rebecca was living in Kenya to make use of the training facilities. Cheptegei isn't the first female athlete to have been targeted. Kenya has a history of female athletes being attacked. From Damaris Mutua to Agnes Tirop, Kenya has seen a massive rise in femicide. Why are female athletes being murdered in a country of champions? Rupha Ramani brings you the details.

Women are being killed at an increasing rate in Kenya - that is a deep cultural, psychological & political problem that Kenya needs to make a TOP priority to fix!

Kenya needs to step up and protect female athletes and women in general! Why would any Olympic athlete want to train there - it’s unsafe. They need to set up a support staff that helps counsel women dealing with violent men/husbands/boyfriends AND psychiatric programs for the men commuting the abuse. They also need to train police to deal specifically with violence against women & have proper laws in place to protect them. Violence against women is only increasing and the government needs to do something serious about it.
No one is attacked by criminals, raped, or killed by the roadside. They are attacked by their boyfriends/husbands. How can the government intervene in that if these people are so attached to their partners to the point they ignore all advice from parents and everyone? In each of the cases, we read that it was not the first time they fought or was attacked.

This unacceptable at all levels to lose two runners within less than a year, Kenyans must do more to protect their visitors.

It's sad that domestic violence happens in Kenya as it does everywhere else but on the occasions that it does, I assure you the perpetrators are arrested and jailed The cases she mentioned were prosecuted except for the Baraini runner who was Killed by her Ethiopian boyfriend who fled to Ethiopia and is being pursued by interpol. All other purpetrators of violence are convicted to serve long sentences. NO ONE in Kenya, from the chief justice who is a woman on down, has ANY interest in protecting domestic abusers This piece of garage that burnt this lady, injured himself in this incident and has being detained in hospital. He likewise will stand trial and will be convicted.

Not only is it a Kenyan problem, it is a worldwide problem because girls and women are victims of male violence every day! What further makes it difficult to see your point is that 'changing attitudes and behavior' is subjective.
