  • I see discussion around tire width of the R3 a lot on the forums. People ask if they should stick with the stock 140 tire width or move up to the 150 tire width. Well in this video we discuss that to help you make a more informed decision.
One of the best reasons to upgrade in tire size is to get better options for more premium/sporty riding.
Yes, it is possible to mount a 150 width tire on the R3's stock rear rim. Yes, you can mount it by yourself, its not that difficult.
A drawback to using a wider tire is possible increased weight and that the tire shape may be slightly distorted due to the rim size being smaller.
Ninja 400's come with a stock rear rim and tire already at a 150 width so this is probably part of the reason why there is so much fascination with the 150 tires.
However, when we look to Moto3, it really seems like a waste. If they can put down more horsepower, brake harder and corner at steeper angles than almost all amateur riders can on the street or track, isn't a 150 width tire a waste?
Well, maybe but motorcycling is partially about the way you feel when you ride and if you feel like your favorite racers when you're on a more sporty/sticky tire then go for it. Even if you can only push the bike to 25% of its limit. Stock tires are probably more capable than most of us can get out of them but most people in the USA ride for fun and to feel cool and having a wider tire certainly makes the bike look better from the rear and its marginally cooler to say you have made an aftermarket mod lol.
    Enjoy :)
