It may be a guy thing, but shiny steel is just purdy machinist or not.

Currently, I'm not a machinist either; but, I'll be taking machining at my local community college here in San Antonio, TX ;-)
Abom79 is the Master, all his work is incredible.

I am really enjoying this series, it's a bit reminiscent of your earlier videos.
I, personally, enjoy sitting here mesmerized watching the chips fly. In fact, I would enjoy a 'boring content' video, filming nearly every moment of the machine work.
Anyways, thanks for still making videos after all this time, it's always a welcome sight in my notifications.
    Happy new year!

Many ways to get to the same destination🙄
I have almost always roughed out in the chuck. Finished between centers on rotating equipment shafts.
Max size if I remember correctly was 10 inch diameter, 4140 HT either 12 or 14 feet in length.
We made our drive dogs in house and used aluminum between the drive screw and the work.
In several shops it was mandatory to finish between centers. That was of course, manual lathes.

Just fitted new taper bearings to my lathe , one set was made by koyo and was packaged with the inner race sitting inside the outer ring as usual but the other bearing was an skf it had a a plastic insert fitted between the outer ring and the inner race to protect the bearing surface from shock if it was dropped - first time i have ever seen it and thought it was a nice addition to a quality bearing .

Very nice! I thought you got some MM tools from across the pond, no? probably not big enough. With your whiz kid brain converting over to inches shouldn't be a problem. I just love how those chips peel off like a waterfall. I am still amazed at how nice and sharp your drill bits are! I have some old ones I need to practice with. The drill doctor works "Okay". I forgot to mention in the cruise video. Late Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and Abby and family!

I've watch you over the years and you do great work. You never cease to amazing me how nice you finish off your turning projects. You seem to take real pride in your work and it shows. I have a question for you. If you could only have one type chuck-head, would you go for a three jaw or four? Seem the four jaw can get a closes round out then a three. But I am wondering your opinion.

    Hi Adam,
i am turning large diameter toolsteel and i also had some problems with the round carbide inserts (16mm diameter). It started to chatter very easy even the meachine is very solid. I then tried to flip the holder around (so the insert points down) and reverse the spindle and this works very well. I can plunge the tool directly into the work without chatter.
Mybe you could try this also since you mentioned often that these round inserts tend to chatter easily.
    best wishes
    Stephan

"So every time you flip this, you're eliminating runout."
I wish I could've gotten my old boss to understand that. Especially since the centers were drilled in round stock, which then had eight rotor blades welded to it, which naturally caused the shaft to bend and twist. That's why I would rough-turn one end, flip, rough-turn the other end, and then finish-turn the two ends, flipping between each. But that guy wore canvas gloves when running the lathe, so try explaining anything to him...
