    BAKU - At least 3.4 trillion USD worth of trade passes through the South China Sea annually, accounting for a third of the global maritime trade. In various parts of the sea, there is the promise of crude oil and natural gas beneath the seabed, while other areas hold rich fishing grounds. But, the sea is also loaded with distinct hazards and chokepoints such as straits, reefs, smugglers, secessionists, and so on. On top of everything are the political boundaries of the nearby coastal states. No fewer than seven countries have maritime claims in the South China Sea, each overlapping the other. But, one nation, in particular, makes the most daring claim. The People's Republic of China not only disputes the waters of each of its neighbours but in doing so it seeks to cast its hegemony over the nations bordering the South China Sea.

      You think it is a joke, but it is a reality in many countries. In Croatia we have over 500 000 war veterans, in a country that now has around 4 million people. That is more than 10% of population. And don't forget all the soldiers that actually died. Imagine if these people were all soldiers during the war in 90s we would not only kick Serbia's ass in a few days, but we could have conquered the entire Europe. These people and their children get many benefits, from scholarships, higher pensions to cheaper public funded housing.

      The French and Imperial Japan sought security by building a line of static defense, the French with the Maginot line and the Imperial Japanese with the island chain occupied after Pearl Harbor. China would do well to learn from history and study the American island hopping campaign of WW2. An island is NOT an aircraft carrier. An island is static and cannot be easily rebuilt or resupplied. Carriers can MOVE. Carriers can be repaired, resupplied and built in safe harbors and allow for much greater tactical and strategic flexibility. We on the other hand can easily cut off Chinese supply lines in the South China Sea at any time and at all places using inexpensive naval mines at a very limited number of choke points. The tactics of naval blockade are well demonstrated throughout naval history, one recent example being Operation Starvation (ref. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Starvation).

    "Probably, this would cause the Philippines to go back to the arms of the US"
    Most likely not, but wud still continue forging deals inline to both of them, rendering PH (one way or the other) both looking like going against & bending over to the US; same approach wud be done on China.
    This is bcoz *actual mechanism* on whether or not the US wud choose to defend the PH is NOT based on the PH-US MDT, rather it's based on whether the US *likes* to defend the PH *or not*

    • @AngryKittens
      @AngryKittens 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Um no? *It's a treaty.* Whether you "like" it or not has nothing to do with it. There are *ZERO* mechanisms. No laws. No safeguards that force either the US or the Philippines to obey it. What it is, however, is an honorable agreement. If you break the treaty, you lose geopolitical trust henceforth, and other countries will find it harder to believe your promises. As simple as that.
      Especially so in this case, given that the Philippines is more than just an ally. It's actual former US territory. Part of the reason of Duterte's anger at the US and his seemingly more neutral stance with China shortly after his election, is because he does not trust the US to honor the treaty. He actually admits that in his speeches. He has stopped going against China because he believes the US will abandon the Philippines if China attacks. And he knows the Philippines has no chance of surviving a war with China.
      And it's kinda justified given that the US did nothing when the Philippines was bringing up the UNCLOS case against China; as well as the fact that the US has basically ignored the Philippines in the last 30 years after they lost access to military bases. Other newer US allies (and even enemies) are getting trade deals and advanced military gear, while the Philippines was basically forgotten.
      The US gave free cobra helicopters to Pakistan in the 80s. Pakistan. Then actually have Pakistan free money in 2017 to keep those helicopters up to date. The same country that hid Bin Laden. They also sold billions of dollars worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia and did free bombing runs for them on Yemen and Iran. The same country that created Bin Laden and exported the Wahhabist doctrine of Al Qaeda, ISIS, and the Taliban.
      When the Philippines asked to buy the same helicopters so it could fight ISIS insurgents, the US Congress literally blocked the sale. Because they didn't "trust" the Philippines. Hilarious, right?

    • @johnzuijdveld9585
      @johnzuijdveld9585 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AngryKittens That's sad, does the US really have no base in the PH.? I cannot see why they would abandon such a strategic position. If they let China have the PH. wouldn't that leave a big hole in their containment strategy of China? I think the PH. ppl. voted for Duterte' because of the drug corruption and his hard line on the insurgents in the south, NOT to get intro bed with China, will he be allowed to keep the presidency?

    • @AngryKittens
      @AngryKittens 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@johnzuijdveld9585 There's the Visiting Forces Agreement, training exercises for the militaries of both nations, but it's just for show. The lease for the bases was not renewed in the first place because of political anger at the CIA support for the Marcos dictatorship which bankrupted the country in the 70s and 80s.
      And yes, aside from Duterte and his cabinet, no one in the Philippines trusts China. In fact, we believe he's been blackmailed or threatened by Xi hence his abrupt change of heart after he visited Beijing early in his term. Either way, we're probably fucked in the near future. China is already harassing our fishermen in the Spratlys and our regular air and coast guard patrols within our maritime borders. They're literally claiming the sea right up to our shores.
      One thing has never changed though, the Philippines is overwhelmingly pro-US, as the US holds the largest diaspora population of Filipinos.
