The century of humiliation is predated by the times of inept and totalitarianism, which they could not shake even to this day. The yongle emperor had destroyed the Chinese fleet that sailed in the thousands. Democracy--which allows more than one person to make a decision--would have probably stopped such rash and stupid behaviour. China has to blame itself too for continuing totalitarianism.

In my opinion, what would really make this content more powerful is to include a bibliography/reference list of sources that you base your arguments on. The absence of references makes me very hesitant to actually incorporate this content in my 'general knowledge' that I would dare use in conversations etc. Also, it provides a nice entry for further reading if people are interested!

the advantage of Chinese Navy ships is they're relatively close from their mainland, while the US Navy ships "scattered" around the world.. it's no doubt that they're the master of their backyard.. with their shipbuilding capacity I think we don't have to wait long to see them surpass the US in tonnage.. and as an Indonesian, this is worrying..

that's an interesting point. If war broke out between China and America's allies, it would take weeks for US naval power to concentrate in the Pacific Ocean, which would make having as many missile platforms in the area as possible vital to slowing down attacks until initial reinforcements could arrive. Then, if it became a protracted war, the missile defense system would need to help buy time for an expansion of the US navy

It's actually reversed, like it or not war and geopolitical arms races give a major boost to technological advancements, with spinoffs leading to lots of useful non-military applications.
Think of the Manhattan project, without it nucleair technology wouldn't be nearly as advanced as it is. Without German V2 rockets and research rocket science wouldn't be nearly as advanced, and arguably WWI and WWII accelerated the development of aviation, helping commercial aviation indirectly, too.
Humanity works best if a small set of large groups compete with each other and try to outsmart one another. While you would theoretically expect us to do better if we just all worked together, that just isn't the case. Because it stimulates a kind of lazy mentality, things like the Manhattan project or getting people on the moon can really only happen though concerted efforts and lots of political will to pour in the required recources, and that political will is only present in a highly competitive context like a (cold) war.
What would even be the incentive to finance really expensive projects with enormous future potential but no short term commercial benefits? No company would pay for that, and without geopolitical rivalries, no government would either(voters wouldn't like it too).

Good analysis and presentation of the potential of what a large PLAN force could enable. However, the discussion of the potential reach of the PLAN beyond the first island chain reminds me of the thinking of British planners in their offensive for the Battle of Passchendaele in WWI. Trench warfare had largely made large movements in the West impossible by that time, but this didn't stop British planners from preparing for a major breakthrough that would allow for mounted cavalry exploitation into the German rear. The latter never happened of course and outside of moving the lines a little bit, nothing significant outside of some attrition was gained. I doubt there is much potential for the PLAN to solidify control of the 1st island chain until at least 2040 and even that I think is unlikely.
First, modern naval warfare requires extensive experience and training in joint operations. While the PLA has joint theater commands, there is no significant evidence of large scale, realistic joint-force exercises. They have had no major amphibious operations in the past several decades and thus no one has any real experience with conducting one, especially in parallel with a major ongoing air-sea campaign. While they can read up on it, actual, realistic practice is something that requires major investment and so far, such practice has not been observed.
Second, culture will eat strategy for breakfast. In particular, the organizational culture of the CCP and its child institutions like the PLA promotes corruption at every level, diverting resources away from force development and modernization. The PRC is yet to produce the high-performance chip, engine and other technologies needed to manufacture high-quality ships, aircraft and weapons. It is unclear just how well their equipment will perform, when corruption is rife and would likely impact actual quality. Just because they have lots of equipment doesn't mean that they are any good. Soviet ships featured a large number of missiles, but after the Cold War, it was found that their quality was not high and the number of rounds was a reflection of that (i.e. most were expected to either miss or fail to operate). Moreover, this corruption hurts joint force cooperation as this would require cooperating with people and organizations outside of the normal relationship structures. Highly personal command relationships corrode the effectiveness of formal hierarchies and even when deployed into joint operational forces, it is hard to see how units from different branches will be able to work together when they don't trust each other.
Remember that the US had significant issues with joint operations throughout the Cold War and has had to do a number of reforms in order to get the current structure, where the various branches develop and train units that are then allocated to the regional and functional combatant commands. It did so because direct experience showed the importance of joint and combined operations that are reinforced by an appropriate culture. The PLA doesn't have anything close to such experience and it is not something that is easy to learn.
Finally, the PRC demographics and economy points to a significant aging of the country. As the average age of workers get into the 50's, the dynamism of the economy will lag, slowing down innovation and output. Although there will be a lot of people, they will be much older and the pool of suitable soldiers and officers will be smaller. Moreover, a smaller economy means fewer resources through which to develop a Navy and Air Force This will force a turn inward, particularly if dissatisfaction leads to domestic unrest.
US and allied planners should of course consider a range of outcomes and be mindful of a worst-case scenario. But based on what is actually happening and taking into account the culture of the PRC and its competitors, then the PLA will likely have to be content with a contested control of its nearby seas for the foreseeable future.

    Yup, check it out...
From 2014-2022 (8 years time), 8 Type 055 14,000 ton mega-destroyers have already been built (3 commissioned, 5 in sea trials), another batch of 8 under construction. The first Type 055 started construction in 2014 (No, that's not a typo. EIGHT YEARS ago) and now ........pause . ....Along with the 8 new massive multi-dimensional stealth capital warships being commissioned to the Chinese Navy also includes but not limited to China's 2nd aircraft carrier the 75,000 ton Type-002 Shandong which was also launched/commissioned into active duty within the same time frame, along with 2 more 7,500 ton Type 052C destroyers (predecessor of the Type 052D), twenty two (yes....22) 8,500 ton Type 052D destroyers (already one of the most capable modern warships capable of hot/cold launches--unlike the other modern systems that can only do hot or cold), seventeen (17) 4000 tons Type-54A frigates, seventy one (71) 1,500 ton Type 056 corvettes, three 45,000 ton Type-075 LHD ("mini assault carriers"), 5 Type-071 25,000 ton LPD (landing platform dock or amphibious platform dock), eight (8) 7000 ton Type 815A/G "intel gathering/long-range signal & reconnaissance surveillance/monitoring "ships", two 11,000 ton Type-94A Jin-class SSBN (able to launch ballistic nuclear tipped missiles anywhere in the world), the Type 094-class sub has 12 silos on its back, with each JL-2 missile carrying up to 8 MIRVS (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles, independently hitting their specific targets) and three (3) 7000 ton Type 093 Shang-class SSN (nuclear power attacked sub) being commissioned into the Chinese Navy (PLAN) all in 8 years...and from recent satellite imagery of Chinese military shipping docks (just outside, not inside those humongous ship building factories), there doesn't seem to be any slow down.
But the real baddies under construction/being fitted out are the new 20,000 ton Tang-class SSBN, with 24 silos on its back, with the new JL-3's being able to fire SLBM (submarine launched ballistic missiles), cruise missiles, anti-ship/air/satellite missiles) and each warhead carrying 10-12 MIRV, the 85,000-100,000 ton Type 003, China's first flattop carrier with EMALS. The 4th, or starting from the 5th, Chinese carriers would be the orcas of the oceans, 130,000-150,000 tons, AI assisted/operated, highly advanced and sophisticated and can carry 120+ aircrafts. These baddies are going to come online by 2030.
    That's in 8 years.

The other thing not mentioned is how the PLA has shifted from being ground force-centric to being more naval and air force-centric. The shift to theater commands is reflective of that, as is the relative decrease in military spending for ground forces (the naval and air budgets have increased by a far greater %).
Chinese warships do lag behind American ones in terms of technology. They also don't have the same naval traditions - and for their aircraft carriers, they have to start from scratch (doctrine-wise). But traditions have to start somewhere, and starting today is better than tomorrow for the Chinese.
This doesn't mean US military planners can just write them off. For one, the PLAN having Aegis-type destroyers 'in 10 years' was considered back in the early to late 2000s as being ludicrous. The PLAN has dozens of those in service today. Given Chinese attitudes to equipment procurement (they don't put things in service if they're unsure of how good it is, meaning little experimental tech but a lot of standardized ones that they know will work), we can't assume they'll be all that inferior in terms of capability compared to the USN's either.
The next big development would be that of a CATOBAR system for the new aircraft carriers. It's unlikely that the PLAN will continue using ski-jump type carriers if they can help it. This one's also probably a matter of when, not if.
What's interesting is if India will actually focus on naval expansion, having seen what China is doing. It's the smart move - control of one's backyard is a paramount priority for aspiring great powers - but only if they can develop their economic base to fund it. If they manage to do that, the global balance of power will have definitely shifted away from the west. India's goals align with those of the US and Western Europe for the most part right now, but a developed India will be competing with the West (and China) for resource access and influence.

Here in Australia the left side of politics and Chinese propaganda are indistinguishable. This is preventing the government from implementing the necessary strategies for our defence as they are too concerned with the associated political fallout. History will be very unkind to a country so sparsely populated and that has such a large store of natural resources and at the same time is so ill prepared to defend itself against such a large authoritarian neighbour in close proximity.

With Japan, USA, Australia, and India combined, itll be difficult for China to assert itself going forward. The Philippines will be MORE protected by US ships going forward, so don't worry too much.
