100% Makee was ready to betray the Covenant for John. I think the show was trying to convey how John made her feel safe... how she could be vulnerable and herself with another for the first time ever. I think she's going to regret summoning the Covenant to Reach in the long run, as she acted out from being shocked in the exact spot from when she was a child. When the Covenant arrive, her solitude will weigh on her far more than it used to.
Agreed! After showing her the Halo, she probably thought John qualified as "worthy", and wanted to fulfill the prophecy together. He tells her life is sacred, and would rather protect people than become like a god while everyone else dies. Her first experience with selflessness. We next see her alone in her room, upset and conflicted. John comes in and gives her a thoughtful gift, showing he was listening to her and thinking about her. This is kindness and validation she's never known before. She cracks. She chooses John. For John's part, he's never know this kind of gentleness and vulnerability either. The writing and performances are subtle and nuanced, but there's a very clear progression leading up to THAT scene. I hope more people pick up on it with a rewatch.

I think there's 2 major issues with the John/Makee stuff: 1. It happened way too fast 2. They don't really have chemistry, as much as Charlie Murphy is trying to do her best with the material given The UNSC was also really dumb this episode. Makee's escort soldiers didn't see the finger blade? Nobody thought to mention Chief dismissing the guards outside Makee's room and staying in there all night? Chief just being dumb and gullible in general. Kai had her pellet out but still has her critical thinking skills. She's the best part of this series. Why is Paragonsky kind of a wimp? Why does Keyes boss *her* around? What even is Keyes' role here? I really want to like this series, I want it to be a gateway for newcomers to jump into this universe that I love, but the show just isn't executing at a high enough level. Here's hoping the new showrunner for season 2 has made the right recalibrations.
I think the happening too fast and no chemistry part were intentional. Ever since Master Chief came into contact with the Forerunner artifact, it's been messing with both his mind and physical hormones. Now Makee's the same way. I believe Mr. Halo Canon already stated that this whole sexy time thing was probably manipulated through the artifact's hold on Master Chief and Makee. I don't buy their relationship as true love or romance, because I believe it's the artifact messing with both of them.
I kinda think they should just drop the show and give wiener his own thing in canon. Why tie it down to this show. In one season the lore got so contrived and silly might as well just make a canon show
Agreed with the sex scene, specially considering it was with 2 people that might as well have the emotional age of barelly teenager, i feel it should of been a more innocent attraction or crush that just go full on sex. That said, the moment Kai got knock out i was on the edge till the end, it was so stressing (in a good way) seeing how everything flled into place and started to go wrong, honestly cant wait to see how Halsey gets out of that one and what do the other Spartans do, but im guessing they wont have much time to think with Reach "possibly" getting invaded.
Imagine if in this timeline, the fall of Reach was not caused by MC having sex with a covenant POW (like it seems), but because dumb dumb UNSC brought back a completely intact phantom without fully understanding it Either option feels stupid af, but at this moment, I see both as possible..
@@Autobotmatt428 Subsection 7 states that a Covenant vessel may be brought back to Human controlled space, but only after an exhaustive search for tracking systems. I wonder if that Phantom is the one that was left on Madrigal, it would be odd though that the UNSC failed to cleanup the “compound” if it is.

It’s weird, but it makes sense to a degree. The artifact played a part in bringing them together. Both of them share scars and have a similarities being forced into a life they didn’t want initially. John wanted that for Makee, and if he could break away from his programming she could have as well. It’s undeniable how strange it is to See John behave this way…. But the artifact had its role in awakening his humanity. At this point though he may be too human. I hope this is a one time thing as well, but John could play a part in bringing Makee back, since he is the only human she seemed to enjoy the company of.
I... agree with you, but it's... yeah what you said, "he's too human" at this point. This is probably weird of me to point out, but John from the games/books has never had sex as far as we know. It'd be literally the furthest thing from his mind, Halsey even manipulated their hormone cocktails to increase muscle mass but not sex drive. So if this version is the same, he just lost his virginity in a very odd and blatant way. I'm not a hypersexual person, the show brought it up not me, I'm just pointing out how terribly out of character this is not only for OUR Chief... but also how odd and unusual it is for this Chief to act this way. This is a poor literary crutch to tell a story nothing about the bad writing is good... Horrible writers horrible story.. I think back to Smallville.. that writing was better.
Too human? Try poorly written. Halo 4 and 5 show us what a Chief who is grappling with his humanity looks like done well and within the established character he has.
As far as paper money goes I don't remember if it was in the others but I know there were ATMs that would shoot out money in ODST (also included in Sadie's story) and I'm pretty sure there was a cash register on outskirts in halo 2
Physical money & currencies still do exist even in distant future like in 26th century, as shown in Halo 3 ODST when an old lady blown up an ATM for money shortly before a brute killed her I mean, even in present time, it's clear that going full digital money/currency is never a good idea. Without a currency or a commodity as a supporting medium, digital money will be useless

I think for me this was my least favorite episode and it really shook my faith in the show becoming good. There's alot of stuff that crossed the line into stupid, Spartan 2s turning on Spartan 2s, chief having sex with a Covenant spy despite all the red flags, and Halsey seeming like a comic book villain. It all really rubbed me the wrong way. I've definitely been giving this show a fair chance despite the fact fact there's already been some stuff like for example Chief literally trying to kill Halsey in a fit of rage. I really hope next season the writers pivot to telling something more in line with the canon and we start getting a more gritty military SciFi. Also small thing but I really wish they'd weather the Spartans armour up more, it looks so much better when it's scratched and dirty. Makes it look much heavier and more like metal. Chief having sex is one thing, but this whole Covenant spy love interest thing is poor writing. They should have given them time to bond and the relationship should have stayed platonic.
This episode was the last straw for me. I canceled my Paramount subscriptions pretty much as soon as it was over. This show's been terrible from the start, but rather than getting better at any point it just seems to get worse and worse as it goes on. One cool UNSC vs Covenant battle scene wasn't nearly enough to salvage this dumpster fire of a show

I'll be honest the series isn't very Halo and feels like a sci-fi show wearing Halo's skin. That being said your videos have for me been the highlight of the series, with the action scenes being a close second. Keep up the great work!

I wrote my thoughts on the show on HiddenXperias channel, stating that this show, when compared to Core Canon, feels like the live-action Cowboy Bebop in that it’s based on the source material, but feels very different with different character interaction, different interpretations of scenes from the core canon of each show. They’re their own thing, but not the source material itself. If folks aren’t into these shows, they can always return to the original medias.

This episode totally shows that this was first and foremost a Cinemax TV show. While I didn't care for "the scene," the episode does give me hope for the core relationship between Cortana and Chief to be close to the core canon.

I can totally see Riz, Vannak, and Kai doing the Noble sacrifice scene from Reach in the next episode, with Kai being the last one to die at the hands of the Covenant as the Pillar of Autumn takes off with the Remnants of the UNSC and Master Chief in stasis aboard (Noble 6).
Main issue i have is everything seems to be rushed. I feel like these episodes would be better if we essentially skipped the Kwan Ha stuff and put more development in the main characters. Like Cortana's decision to choose chief doesn't make sense because they really don't have a lot of development yet. Chief and Makee's relationship is cringe because he just essentially met her and they already jumping bones. Show is not bad but it could be much better. The pacing and development is bad. The idea is there but not good execution. If the 1st season is going to be just story building then shouldn't be rushed.
Not unless they were introduced by human settlers for some reason. Considering theres existing wildlife on Reach that evolved on its own (Moa, Guta, various avian species including this series's introduced "Redcrest"), probably not. Presumably an analogous species of some form filled the role snakes do on Earth.

I feel it was intended to not make sense or be portrayed as a real genuine relationship between 2 people. The show made it clear in previous episodes that John-117 and Makee are linked together by the Forerunner artifact and they are pulled together by the artifact exerting some form of power over them. In that logic, it's not so weird then for them to have sex so quickly. I noticed several occasions the show explicitly telling us that the artifact affects Chief's physical state (hormones, heart rate, blood pressure etc.) so it's not impossible for the artifact to send out sexy time signal to both of them.
the fight scene did not save this episode. That sex scene prevented anything from being saved from this episode. It essentially tells us that it is chiefs fault for the fall of reach.

Unless its a mistake, the TV's version of this phrase is actually pretty different. TV: "the Divine Wind propelling those who are worthy on a Great Journey *to* the Sacred Ring" Game: "Halo. Its Divine Wind will rush through the stars propelling all who are worthy along the path to salvation" The TV version words it as a Great Journey to the Sacred Ring, whereas in the game they're aware that Halo will begin their Great Journey. This is a pretty major difference imo. Would like to hear your thoughts on that, if you have any 7:43 A new level of "I can fix him" I'm glad the fight scene this episode was done well, but god some of the plotlines are so ridiculous. With the teasers we've seen for the last episode, I hope it'll be better, but I really hope some major reconsideration is made ahead of Season 2. The show is genuinely damaging to Halo imo, and will continue to be so if something doesn't change for the second season

On the "money" the Marines use to pay up; it could be paper money, a physical manifestation of credits, but it seems kind of flimsy to me for that. "Reach City" is so weird to me because as you point out in the video, you can tell the production designers LOVE their deep cuts when making visual references like the ones all over the city and park. And the sex scene just felt wholly unnecessary. A kiss? Sure. Show that they're letting their walls down with each other. Maybe even have them wake up in the bed together and heavily imply they went to "tuna town" (eugh... Did you make that one up?). The whole weird touching and stripping and touching and Cortana watching for several minutes was just unnecessary.

When he's excited or amused (or can't take something seriously) about something he's really expressive. That's just who he is. I dislike it's writing. because I expect better from professional writers and showrunners as a writer myself. None of Chief's, or the UNSC's behavior as a country's military in general, are acting like a interplanetary military that is losing a existential war with aliens. It's how they are written to act. I'm fine with some differences in who the characters are, but I don't even recognize Chief as a military operative, let alone the Chief we all love and know. For context. How Halo is being wrtittten, is exactly how Star Trek has been treated. Seeing some of my heroes I grew up looking up to in my teens, become dislikable and amoral, without good reason, isn't a good feeling. I only blame the writers and Corporate executives. Not the actors. They seem to having taken all the shallow ideas from other sci fi and fantasy popular now, rather than truly create something that is Halo beyond the surface level. Mine would be Arbiter's, because it's written and structured in a much more meaningful and better paced telling of a warrior who earned a redemption, after fighting a war based on lies and doing some pretty evil things. A tv show counterpart to this is the Teal'C from Stargate SG-1, Another beloved character who was once a leader on the enemy side. This whole romance with Mackee and Chief is, and I'll be direct. Literally as bad as Young Adult genre romances such as Twilight. That level of maturity is not how you should be writing military sci fi's for adult audiences. It's a young adult or teenager's idea of what is a 'meaningful' reason to defect. Mackee could have been another Arbiter or Teal'C, who learns not all humanity is evil. And he's right. A lot of franchises have suffered a degradation of quality in writing in recent years. Ever since the writers strikes actually, but it never has been as bad as the past four years.
Halsey. If I hated her before................As for "the scene" I thought it made sense considering what these two very lonely and broken people have been through. To be able to travel the universe never finding anyone to tether to, only to meet you literal soulmate (they are 2 in a billion) it makes sense they would seek solace in each other. It's just sad that it was all doomed from the start esp with someone like Halsey whispering in your ear and pulling the strings in the background.
I am a big fan of the show and the Halo setting since the og Xbox. The sex scene was probably insisted on by someone in the studio. I don't care for it, but I understand it within the narrative of the series. John is still struggling to deal with emotions, and through the Madrigal artifact he and Makee are (were?) connected on a level deeper than I imagine most normal people ever feel, much less those just overcoming artificially stunted emotions. I don't love it but I can live with it.
People still saying they didnt look at the games and yet Cortana has direct quotes from it. At this point I feel like the harsh/unreasonable negative criticism is from people that havent seen the show or played the games and say they did.
@@thedrizzlefactory8600 It's extremely shallow, there is no complexity to each character. Or the story, they have been pushing UNSC bad. That the Covenant seem like the good guys here. That make me want them to glass reach. John and Makee's entire story is so shallow and forced its embarrassing. And all the Halo dressing is just that dressing. It gives a veiled allure that it's Halo when it's not. None of the themes of Halo are in this show, what is in the show is Forced Melodrama about characters who never should have existed.
Weirdly, I think they made the episode trailers way before the show was finished and then never bothered to re-edit them later. The trailer for the next episode has a stand in voice for Cortana, trailer for this episode had the temple.. which is in the next episode, and the trailer for episode 5 had unfinished CG.
I liked this episode more than i thought I would and personally don't mind the chief/makee scene - neither of them had ever been in that situation before so would be intrigued and unsure of how to deal with those emotions and evidently have a very strong connection through the artifacts, so yeah I don't think it's that weird that they would fuck. Was also hoping that makee was gonna switch sides but I guess that isn't gonna happen now? Will have to wait and see

Everything happening in the first half of this episode is intended to convey that Makee had 100% defected. There would have been a lingering question, except the mirror/self-surgery motif in the show has been established to indicate a break with the past and a new path. Turning the main (or only, as far as we know?) relic-user for the Covenant was the absolute best tactical situation for humanity, then Parangosky & co happen. It works quite well structurally, I feel writers just didn't count on the... frankly, extremely weird and offputting, hangups of the audience. Well-adjusted adults in the Halo fandom must be so humiliated by the adolescent furor on social media about a brief, very mild, romantic scene in which John was genuinely acting in the most strategically beneficial manner possible by presenting another emotional bond to which Makee can transfer her allegiance.

This is not a fair argument in any capacity. My biggest problem with that romantic scene is that not only does it take away Chief’s asexual icon status, but it also plays like a telenovela. It’s very poorly done and exists solely to make the discovery of Halo more “personal.” Because every plot line has to be personal otherwise it’s not interesting right? The fall of reach is boring because Chief didn’t have a girlfriend on the planet he was scared of losing /s.
I get it, silver-timeline but the fight scene bothered me. There is no way Blue team/Silver team would unquestionably just follow Halsey's orders and turn on the Master Chief, they're family. I don't want to see a Master Chief sex scene either, it's like him hooking up with the Arbiter.

I don't think John and Makee's relationship will last. I mean correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Miranda Keyes have a similar ability to what they have in the game? like accessing forunner stuff or whatever, and i think she was killed in the game. maybe this is the shows version of that so they dont have to kill of keyes later?

The fight scene was almost as stupid as the sex. The MJOLNIR is supposed to augment a Spartans ability, to the point of where the Augmentations are required to maintain control whilst wearing it as was found out during testing with unaugmented humans. Vannek shouldn’t have even had an issue against John.
i wonder if the blu-ray dvd version contain the whole action and intense wrestling sequence between mister cheek and makee. should drive sales to high heaven
Awesome analysis of this episode. I liked this episode mainly because of the Spartan fight and Cortana aligning herself with John. I also wish that Halsey wasn’t being given the Karen Travis treatment in this series but hey 🤷🏽♂️ As far as the John and Makee relation, I really feel like they are trying to push a Bornstellar narrative while Makee serves either as the Librarian or Chant-to-Green counterpart. I’m ok if that’s what they are doing but I’m not fond of how fast they are getting us there.

I have been an anti-negativity and skeptic with this show since before it started "Just give it a chance!" I would say. Episode 8 honestly broke me. My good-will has dried up. Im still finishing this series but so much more should have been done with this show. It peaked at Ep5 for me honestly.
“Reach City” and the sex scene frankly annoyed me. I’ve been defending the show up to this point and I feel like it slapped me in the face. Everything outside of that was actually pretty good though.
Could have lived my entire life without seeing master chief doing the nasty. It was put well on another review: They make love while Cortana watches creepily like a perverted Tinker Bell, waiting in the wings.

100% Makee was ready to betray the Covenant for John. I think the show was trying to convey how John made her feel safe... how she could be vulnerable and herself with another for the first time ever. I think she's going to regret summoning the Covenant to Reach in the long run, as she acted out from being shocked in the exact spot from when she was a child. When the Covenant arrive, her solitude will weigh on her far more than it used to.
Agreed! After showing her the Halo, she probably thought John qualified as "worthy", and wanted to fulfill the prophecy together. He tells her life is sacred, and would rather protect people than become like a god while everyone else dies.
Her first experience with selflessness.
We next see her alone in her room, upset and conflicted. John comes in and gives her a thoughtful gift, showing he was listening to her and thinking about her. This is kindness and validation she's never known before.
She cracks. She chooses John. For John's part, he's never know this kind of gentleness and vulnerability either.
The writing and performances are subtle and nuanced, but there's a very clear progression leading up to THAT scene.
I hope more people pick up on it with a rewatch.

I think there's 2 major issues with the John/Makee stuff:
1. It happened way too fast
2. They don't really have chemistry, as much as Charlie Murphy is trying to do her best with the material given
The UNSC was also really dumb this episode. Makee's escort soldiers didn't see the finger blade? Nobody thought to mention Chief dismissing the guards outside Makee's room and staying in there all night? Chief just being dumb and gullible in general. Kai had her pellet out but still has her critical thinking skills. She's the best part of this series.
Why is Paragonsky kind of a wimp? Why does Keyes boss *her* around? What even is Keyes' role here?
I really want to like this series, I want it to be a gateway for newcomers to jump into this universe that I love, but the show just isn't executing at a high enough level. Here's hoping the new showrunner for season 2 has made the right recalibrations.
I think the happening too fast and no chemistry part were intentional. Ever since Master Chief came into contact with the Forerunner artifact, it's been messing with both his mind and physical hormones. Now Makee's the same way. I believe Mr. Halo Canon already stated that this whole sexy time thing was probably manipulated through the artifact's hold on Master Chief and Makee. I don't buy their relationship as true love or romance, because I believe it's the artifact messing with both of them.
I kinda think they should just drop the show and give wiener his own thing in canon.

Agreed with the sex scene, specially considering it was with 2 people that might as well have the emotional age of barelly teenager, i feel it should of been a more innocent attraction or crush that just go full on sex.
That said, the moment Kai got knock out i was on the edge till the end, it was so stressing (in a good way) seeing how everything flled into place and started to go wrong, honestly cant wait to see how Halsey gets out of that one and what do the other Spartans do, but im guessing they wont have much time to think with Reach "possibly" getting invaded.
Did nobody else notice that there was a captured Phantom in a hangar? What if someone failed to completely secure its signals emissions?
Imagine if in this timeline, the fall of Reach was not caused by MC having sex with a covenant POW (like it seems), but because dumb dumb UNSC brought back a completely intact phantom without fully understanding it

It’s weird, but it makes sense to a degree. The artifact played a part in bringing them together. Both of them share scars and have a similarities being forced into a life they didn’t want initially. John wanted that for Makee, and if he could break away from his programming she could have as well. It’s undeniable how strange it is to See John behave this way…. But the artifact had its role in awakening his humanity. At this point though he may be too human. I hope this is a one time thing as well, but John could play a part in bringing Makee back, since he is the only human she seemed to enjoy the company of.
I... agree with you, but it's... yeah what you said, "he's too human" at this point. This is probably weird of me to point out, but John from the games/books has never had sex as far as we know. It'd be literally the furthest thing from his mind, Halsey even manipulated their hormone cocktails to increase muscle mass but not sex drive. So if this version is the same, he just lost his virginity in a very odd and blatant way. I'm not a hypersexual person, the show brought it up not me, I'm just pointing out how terribly out of character this is not only for OUR Chief... but also how odd and unusual it is for this Chief to act this way. With Maquee or Maki or whatever the hell her name is.

As far as paper money goes I don't remember if it was in the others but I know there were ATMs that would shoot out money in ODST (also included in Sadie's story) and I'm pretty sure there was a cash register on outskirts in halo 2

I think for me this was my least favorite episode and it really shook my faith in the show becoming good. There's alot of stuff that crossed the line into stupid, Spartan 2s turning on Spartan 2s, chief having sex with a Covenant spy despite all the red flags, and Halsey seeming like a comic book villain. It all really rubbed me the wrong way.
I've definitely been giving this show a fair chance despite the fact fact there's already been some stuff like for example Chief literally trying to kill Halsey in a fit of rage. I really hope next season the writers pivot to telling something more in line with the canon and we start getting a more gritty military SciFi.
Also small thing but I really wish they'd weather the Spartans armour up more, it looks so much better when it's scratched and dirty. Makes it look much heavier and more like metal. Chief having sex is one thing, but this whole Covenant spy love interest thing is poor writing. They should have given them time to bond and the relationship should have stayed platonic.
This episode was the last straw for me. I canceled my Paramount subscriptions pretty much as soon as it was over. This show's been terrible from the start, but rather than getting better at any point it just seems to get worse and worse as it goes on.

A lot of times Sci-fi shows (and movies) end up having really static frames that either are just flat, or are too much for one frame
I wrote my thoughts on the show on HiddenXperias channel, stating that this show, when compared to Core Canon, feels like the live-action Cowboy Bebop in that it’s based on the source material, but feels very different with different character interaction, different interpretations of scenes from the core canon of each show. They’re their own thing, but not the source material itself. If folks aren’t into these shows, they can always return to the original medias.

This episode totally shows that this was first and foremost a Cinemax TV show. While I didn't care for "the scene," the episode does give me hope for the core relationship between Cortana and Chief to be close to the core canon.

I can totally see Riz, Vannak, and Kai doing the Noble sacrifice scene from Reach in the next episode, with Kai being the last one to die at the hands of the Covenant as the Pillar of Autumn takes off with the Remnants of the UNSC and Master Chief in stasis aboard (Noble 6).
Main issue i have is everything seems to be rushed. I feel like these episodes would be better if we essentially skipped the Kwan Ha stuff and put more development in the main characters. Like Cortana's decision to choose chief doesn't make sense because they really don't have a lot of development yet. Chief and Makee's relationship is cringe because he just essentially met her and they already jumping bones. Show is not bad but it could be much better. The pacing and development is bad. The idea is there but not good execution. If the 1st season is going to be just story building then shouldn't be rushed.
Does Reach have snakes? If so, I hope there's a reenactment of Snakes On A Plane to purge the Chief/Makee scene from this timeline...
Not unless they were introduced by human settlers for some reason. Considering theres existing wildlife on Reach that evolved on its own (Moa, Guta, various avian species including this series's introduced "Redcrest"), probably not. Presumably an analogous species of some form filled the role snakes do on Earth.

my only real gripe with this episode is that “scene” otherwise it was fine, honestly wish they could’ve done something different in that scene than straight to second base, at least build the relationship between chief and makee a little more
I feel it was intended to not make sense or be portrayed as a real genuine relationship between 2 people. The show made it clear in previous episodes that John-117 and Makee are linked together by the Forerunner artifact and they are pulled together by the artifact exerting some form of power over them. In that logic, it's not so weird then for them to have sex so quickly. I noticed several occasions the show explicitly telling us that the artifact affects Chief's physical state (hormones, heart rate, blood pressure etc.) so it's not impossible for the artifact to send out sexy time signal to both of them.

the fight scene did not save this episode. That sex scene prevented anything from being saved from this episode. It essentially tells us that it is chiefs fault for the fall of reach.

The TV version words it as a Great Journey to the Sacred Ring, whereas in the game they're aware that Halo will begin their Great Journey. This is a pretty major difference imo. Would like to hear your thoughts on that, if you have any

I'm glad the fight scene this episode was done well, but god some of the plotlines are so ridiculous. With the teasers we've seen for the last episode, I hope it'll be better, but I really hope some major reconsideration is made ahead of Season 2. On the "money" the Marines use to pay up; it could be paper money, a physical manifestation of credits, but it seems kind of flimsy to me for that. I personally think it might be some kind of Post Exchange voucher, or maybe ration tickets or some other similar non-money equivilent.

"Reach City" is so weird to me because as you point out in the video, you can tell the production designers LOVE their deep cuts when making visual references like the ones all over the city and park.
And the sex scene just felt wholly unnecessary. A kiss? Sure. Show that they're letting their walls down with each other. Maybe even have them wake up in the bed together and heavily imply they went to "tuna town" (eugh... Did you make that one up?). The whole weird touching and stripping and touching and Cortana watching for several minutes was just unnecessary.

@@Tucker358 He's a youtuber, sometimes the guy can play up the acting dude. If you actually watch the whole thing, his reasons for disliking parts of the show are legitimate. When he's excited or amused (or can't take something seriously) about something he's really expressive. That's just who he is. I dislike it's writing. because I expect better from professional writers and showrunners as a writer myself.
None of Chief's, or the UNSC's behavior as a country's military in general, are acting like a interplanetary military that is losing a existential war with aliens. It's how they are written to act. I'm fine with some differences in who the characters are, but I don't even recognize Chief as a military operative, let alone the Chief we all love and know.
For context. How Halo is being wrtittten, is exactly how Star Trek has been treated. Seeing some of my heroes I grew up looking up to in my teens, become dislikable and amoral, without good reason, isn't a good feeling. Chief has been made hard to like, just like Jean-Luc Picard in Trek has become, when they were originally paragons: Characters that are examples of the best of humanity.

They seem to having taken all the shallow ideas from other sci fi and fantasy popular now, rather than truly create something that is Halo beyond the surface level. Compare Arbiter's story in Halo 2, to Mackees (so far), and which would you prefer?
Mine would be Arbiter's, because it's written and structured in a much more meaningful and better paced telling of a warrior who earned a redemption, after fighting a war based on lies and doing some pretty evil things.
A tv show counterpart to this is the Teal'C from Stargate SG-1, Another beloved character who was once a leader on the enemy side.
This whole romance with Mackee and Chief is, and I'll be direct. Literally as bad as Young Adult genre romances such as Twilight. That level of maturity is not how you should be writing military sci fi's for adult audiences. It's a young adult or teenager's idea of what is a 'meaningful' reason to defect.
Mackee could have been another Arbiter or Teal'C, who learns not all humanity is evil.
And he's right. A lot of franchises have suffered a degradation of quality in writing in recent years. Ever since the writers strikes actually, but it never has been as bad as the past four years.

Halsey. If I hated her before................As for "the scene" I thought it made sense considering what these two very lonely and broken people have been through. To be able to travel the universe never finding anyone to tether to, only to meet you literal soulmate (they are 2 in a billion) it makes sense they would seek solace in each other. It's just sad that it was all doomed from the start esp with someone like Halsey whispering in your ear and pulling the strings in the background.
I am a big fan of the show and the Halo setting since the og Xbox. The sex scene was probably insisted on by someone in the studio. I don't care for it, but I understand it within the narrative of the series. John is still struggling to deal with emotions, and through the Madrigal artifact he and Makee are (were?) connected on a level deeper than I imagine most normal people ever feel, much less those just overcoming artificially stunted emotions. I don't love it but I can live with it.

People still saying they didnt look at the games and yet Cortana has direct quotes from it. At this point I feel like the harsh/unreasonable negative criticism is from people that havent seen the show or played the games and say they did.
From your videos it’s pretty clear that the writing team did reference the games. If they hadn’t where would they have gotten all of this information?

John and Makee's entire story is so shallow and forced its embarrassing. And all the Halo dressing is just that dressing. It gives a veiled allure that it's Halo when it's not. None of the themes of Halo are in this show, what is in the show is Forced Melodrama about characters who never should have existed.

Weirdly, I think they made the episode trailers way before the show was finished and then never bothered to re-edit them later. The trailer for the next episode has a stand in voice for Cortana, trailer for this episode had the temple.. which is in the next episode, and the trailer for episode 5 had unfinished CG.

I liked this episode more than i thought I would and personally don't mind the chief/makee scene - neither of them had ever been in that situation before so would be intrigued and unsure of how to deal with those emotions and evidently have a very strong connection through the artifacts, so yeah I don't think it's that weird that they would fuck. Was also hoping that makee was gonna switch sides but I guess that isn't gonna happen now? Will have to wait and see
Kinda just annoys me that in canon the Spartans are trained to avoid feelings like that and overcome them........but in this series they needed a "pellet"

Everything happening in the first half of this episode is intended to convey that Makee had 100% defected. There would have been a lingering question, except the mirror/self-surgery motif in the show has been established to indicate a break with the past and a new path. Turning the main (or only, as far as we know?) relic-user for the Covenant was the absolute best tactical situation for humanity, then Parangosky & co happen.
It works quite well structurally, I feel writers just didn't count on the... frankly, extremely weird and offputting, hangups of the audience. Well-adjusted adults in the Halo fandom must be so humiliated by the adolescent furor on social media about a brief, very mild, romantic scene in which John was genuinely acting in the most strategically beneficial manner possible by presenting another emotional bond to which Makee can transfer her allegiance.

This is not a fair argument in any capacity. My biggest problem with that romantic scene is that not only does it take away Chief’s asexual icon status, but it also plays like a telenovela. It’s very poorly done and exists solely to make the discovery of Halo more “personal.” Because every plot line has to be personal otherwise it’s not interesting right? The fall of reach is boring because Chief didn’t have a girlfriend on the planet he was scared of losing /s.

There is no way Blue team/Silver team would unquestionably just follow Halsey's orders and turn on the Master Chief, they're family. I don't want to see a Master Chief sex scene either, it's like him hooking up with the Arbiter.

I mean correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Miranda Keyes have a similar ability to what they have in the game? like accessing forunner stuff or whatever, and i think she was killed in the game. maybe this is the shows version of that so they dont have to kill of keyes later?
In the core Canon Nearly all Humans can use Forerunner technology. And no humans have a crazy connection like Makee and Chief have.

The fight scene was almost as stupid as the sex. The MJOLNIR is supposed to augment a Spartans ability, to the point of where the Augmentations are required to maintain control whilst wearing it as was found out during testing with unaugmented humans.

Awesome analysis of this episode. I liked this episode mainly because of the Spartan fight and Cortana aligning herself with John. I also wish that Halsey wasn’t being given the Karen Travis treatment in this series but hey 🤷🏽♂️
As far as the John and Makee relation, I really feel like they are trying to push a Bornstellar narrative while Makee serves either as the Librarian or Chant-to-Green counterpart. I’m ok if that’s what they are doing but I’m not fond of how fast they are getting us there.
I thought this was quite a cool episode, everything up to and including sexy time was a bit weird (not as bad as i was thinking though) but everything after was really good imo
I have been an anti-negativity and skeptic with this show since before it started "Just give it a chance!" I would say. Episode 8 honestly broke me. My good-will has dried up. Im still finishing this series but so much more should have been done with this show. It peaked at Ep5 for me honestly.

“Reach City” and the sex scene frankly annoyed me. I’ve been defending the show up to this point and I feel like it slapped me in the face.
Everything outside of that was actually pretty good though.
To be fair, core canon has stuff like "Arcadia City" on Arcadia and other cities like that. Though, I do agree it sounds weird.
