That unknown frigate in the background at around 13:35 looks extremely similar to the Stalwart-Class, if not the same. I wonder if it's just their take on it. I love seeing the UNSC ships being shown off so far!
I think this was framed more as an unfortunate coincidence rather than as something that would support a hard anti-drug use stance by the creators of the show
When I saw that first plasma rifle shot hit it's target and the following chaos delt by plasma weapons I felt very refreshed as after reading how deadly plasma weapons are in books I've always wanted to see how horrific they actually were in game to would be cool to see the flood at some point in the first season or the second would 100% hang around for that
It's like they reached into my brain and put to screen EXACTLY how I imagined what happens to people and surfaces struck by plasma fire, based on how they were described in the books.
A small detailed that my friend and I noticed and liked was that the DMR used seemed to be firing in full-auto, which was apparently a feature on the Reach DMR. Sadly in-game the fire selector switch cannot be flipped tho.
Mercy might be the one of the best executed visuals in the franchise. I also love how his character is developing, subtly manipulative with quite shows of authority. It's so perfect. My man Julian Bleach really nails the performance too. Probably my favourite part of the episode.

The Producers of the show already stated that they will create thier own "vision" of Halo verse (perhaps due some non disclosured legal quarels between them and Halo IP owners (kind of like CBS vs Paramount which lead to creation of the Kelvin timeline because in 2008 CBS said very strict NO GO for anything post Nemesis timeline (which new movie was planned to be)) so they get *very limited* rights to use source material... but the rest (including the Universe) they needed to create on their own... But that's just my personal theory anyway. 😉

The beginning was super great. Then, I had a few negative knee-jerks. The two biggest: Parangosky was young. Parangosky in 2552 is in her 90's and walks with a cane. Miranda Keyes is a research scientist. Making Keyes a research scientist was the biggest knee-jerk for me. Anyway, watching your video made me less irritable. I will be like you and not keep comparing it to the real thing.
One of my favorite call backs was Chief telling kwan what he likes to eat, nuts bolts and microchips. Referencing his debate with Cortana about who is human and who is machine.
I LIVE for the brutality and gore. I’ve wanted to see this kind of result from a plasma strike for YEARS. Now, the question is; BLAMITE? We know a Needlers gonna be in the show, we saw the prop… We can only hope

Maybe Chief was just aiming better with the 50 cal. The general and the other guy might have been spraying more than focusing fire. I know they seem to be holding the 50 cal steady but maybe chiefs suit just helped him to aim each bullet with maximum efficiency, shreddering through the elites depleted shields. Or the director just wanted a cool turret scene and didn't really think about it enough. Probably that one.
Pretty sure those guns fire a smaller round, like the 7.62 as they do currently. Based on all the other guns they have, it doesn't appear they have any thing larger that .30 caliber.
@@thatsubarutho8806 That may be true for military miniguns, but the likelihood of civilians (even insurrectionists) having depleted uranium rounds is low. but those turrets were definitely based around the M134 which fires 7.62x51 NATO so the damage inconsistency is odd.
Would need more episodes to find out but something interesting was that the master chief's shield recharged in the fight but if you notice for example the final elite killed (one who killed the general), his shields did not recharge. There are also some other parts during the fight that seem to suggest their shield might not recharge and that they were whittled down which could possibly be an explanation for why the gun was able to easily kill 3 elites when they couldn't before...But I think it was a rule of cool logic moment probably.
7:10 Full Metal Jacketed rounds are considered to be the most common bullets in current circulation today. And I would imagine it would be true in the future since they’re using the same calibers we use today.
I'll be THAT GUY and just say I loved it. I thought the first episode was amazing. I'm not gonna cry that the show has its own halo theme song. Doesn't bother me. loved Halsey. Loved the acting. Loved the characters. Loved the dialog. Loved the hour long episode. The show and the studio are doing great by me in the first episode. Nice to have you review the show in a positive way. Seems like lots of hate floating around out there for some pretty lame reasons.

Visually the show looks amazing, i love how they are incorporating aspects from the books and games. My only gripe so far is the story, it feels like it's trying to start several plot points that feel unnecessary or are too confusing. It also looks like they're trying to make the show accessible to people that haven't played the games or read the books while also trying to call back to stuff only preexisting fans would know, but in doing so it made the show very confusing on both ends. If i were somebody that had never heard of Halo and saw this on Paramount+ it would be jarring and uncomfortable.
9:36 Oh i thought he was only labeled Demon because he blew up the ring later on.. i found it weird for them to call him demon but i didnt know they just generically referred to all spartans as demon. I thought this because in Halo when Locke is talking to an Elite he mentions that they refer to John as a demon and only him specifically.
Locke spoke to The Arbiter, and he calls 117 "The Demon". The one who has done more damage to the covenant than any other, seeing as he almost single handedly destroyed the first Halo ring. Which was The Arbiters duty to protect. Clarifying for those who don't know.
The sound design (wort wort), armor, and weapons are spot on. I love the attention to detail. It's fantastic that each weapon behaves in a plausible manner, especially the plasma weapons. Showing Chief's face was definitely a risk, but I'm a fan of humanizing larger than life characters and I think the show is nailing that so far. The covenant design is awkward, though. Some shots are perfect and others feel recognizably cgi. I love that the audience is left to decide whether the UNSC is the lesser of two evils when compared to the Covenant. That being said, The Covenant is solidly cult like.
THIS IS IT! This is the review I was waiting for!! & it did not disappoint. In fact, I have yet to see a HC video that I can find ANY fault with. That being said, I throughly loved the pilot episode and thought that it delivered a STRONG opening into the HALO universe, as it is apparent that the production has opted to look to the books, rather than the Bungie era games (Especially), for their source material. Everything from the look, sounds, conflicts involving the insurrectionists/UNSC & the shady involvement of Naval Intelligence has me hyped AF! If this is what we can look forward to seeing more of in the Silver Timeline, then I am totally happy & onboard for the experience!!🥰😍🥰
Ok while I enjoy the action I do have my grips with the show mostly with the actual story not really catching my eye I enjoy the fight scenes they are amazing but with the actual story not really being appealing like the covenant having a human among their high level ranks instead of a prisoner I am not 100% on board with that and I am not a big fan of Captain and Miranda Keyes in the show I prefer them in the old books and well games I do plan on continuing my watch of the show before I give a full opinion but I’m not too optimistic about the story being great but if it’s not it’s at least a stepping stone for us to get that great halo movie or TV series so if this show is bad we are at least halfway there
@Caleb Moore Agreed, but I also don't think they should've removed Chief's helmet & shown him to us in the very first ep... that needed to be at a later date! I'll continue to watch nonetheless even tho Halsey & Keyes are much too young. Hopefully, some explanations will tie things together & possibly, as you stated, provide stepping stones to a more fleshed-out feature &/or TV series.
Agreed!, I am so tired of seeing reviews complaining that "It sucks because the story doesn't line up with the games." We have known that it wasn't going to be that. I enjoy the air of mystery in not knowing what's coming. I want to be surprised! Even if they portrayed stories from the books, or filling in the gaps, you will always know how it ends, and what will be coming, who will die and who will live. Doing it this way gives them free reign to subvert our expectations and give us something that we don't know the journey or the destination, but we do know the elements that make it up. And for that, I am all aboard.
The effort you put into matching the cadence of your speech with the movements of your Spartan is incredible. Or maybe it was the other way around. In any case, thank you for going the extra mile to make this video that much more enjoyable.
Something that really has me excited is simply that Captain Keyes is still alive amd Reach is still active which means later in the season or hopefully in separate seasons they can cover the fall of reach and the events of the games
I see a lot of people complaining about how the show doesn’t portray “humanity’s desperation” and their “threat of extinction” against the Covenant. But you bring up a good point, this appears to be so early on in the war (despite taking place in 2552) that the Covenant is only picking at the outter colonies for the purposes of excavation, and perhaps haven’t even begun their campaign of genocide against the humans. It doesn’t seem like they fully understand that the humans are the reclaimers yet, which would have been their motive for going to all out war with humanity. We’ll probably see the fall of Reach and the first Halo ring afterwards pretty soon. I’m fairly confident they wouldn’t end the first season without getting to at least the first Halo ring

Ngl Miranda's attempt to convince Qwan to work with the unsc was genuinely pitiful. She's a scientist now not a leader so it makes sense but I couldn't help but imagine how halo 2/3 Miranda would have done. I don't think any words could have convinced Qwan but I think she did a really not good job at it lol. Sorry if I spelled any names wrong I'm terrible at remembering spellings.
Qwan was being beyond stupid though. The covenant killed her dad, friends, and comrades. Instead of realizing that genocidal space aliens are coming for everyone, she would rather threaten Keyes that she’s going to lie that the UNSC killed those people? Whatever drugs she’s took have rotted her brain. She’s a prisoner who just threw out any reason to be kept alive or be set free. It’s bad writing, it makes no sense, and it’s only done so Chief can go “awol”. Then she also threatens Chief with a gun, despite witnessing him murder the elites that wiped out her enclave. The show as a whole has lots of poor decisions but god damn it sucks that Chief’s sidekick for the whole show is going to be an insufferable crazy person with a stupid haircut.
I find it sad that this show was made into a seperate canon as it will make a lot of peoples first experience with Halo be a completely different world/universe with a lot of the things we love about it being completely different which i feel like takes a lot away from the story itself. Not to mention this would have been the perfect way to get people into the Universe we all know and love and then flesh out some of things we knew less about. Also i would have loved to see a story of the First contact and how scary that really must have been. slowly realising that all of humanity is under attack by a foreign and much more technologically advanced race that wants nothing more than to exterminate the human race. yes this would entail us seeing humanity getting it's ass kicked the first season or couple of seasons but hey that would have just made it much more engaging and ''scary'' to watch.
Well maybe if the producers bothered to use the lore instead of looking over it and making their own, it wouldn't have had 265 failed drafts before going "Its an alt timeline"
Could not agree more. I'm tired of all the doom and gloom "fans" hating on the show for not following "tHe LoRe" when they prepared us ahead of time by establishing this is a separate timeline. It's fantastic so far and even my wife is digging it.
Exactly, yeah some of the CGI shots were strange, and Chief showing his face was jarring, but I sick of people calling me and others “fake halo fans” just because we don’t criticize the smallest bits of the show, a DAY after it comes out. We need to be looking at the positives so hopefully we can get more Halo related content. Kinda like with what happened with a certain show who’s protagonist everyone seems to compare to the Chief…
@@Meep-0424 Exactly! There's nothing wrong with fair criticism and in fact i'm willing to bet the writers/showrunners would welcome it as they head into Season 2. But so far it's been all this way overblown crap by people who don't grasp the concept of this being separate from the core timeline and that's just going to push the writers to do their own thing if even this can't be enjoyed.
You know people are being irrational when 24 hours after the first episode comes out, people are saying the show will be terrible just because of some bad CGI, somebody showing his face, and a few barely noticeable editing mistakes.

I’ve been through more than one adaptation of something (Dune, Ender’s Game, and a Wings of Fire show upcoming) and I just want an adaptation for something that I like to not be so divided. I just hope people will stop trying to watch something looking for every little thing to complain about.
I figure the Master Chief being more effective with the chaingun might be an Aliens pulse rifle situation - the MJOLNIR is making tiny adjustments with the grip and aim to make what would normally be a wide-spread weapon into something much more accurate, able to concentrate that fire making it more effective. Given it's the future, it might even be tapping into a preexisting smart-uplink that the Insurrectionists, with less resources and technical ability, can't access.

My Biggest Complaint was just how powerful the Elites Shields where when fighting the Insurrectionist especially when they where just Elite Minors except for one. To be more exact the Scene where they blow open the the bases gates and walk Nonchalant towards 40 or so insurrectionists with 2 two chain guns and a lot of our current day weapons. Yes these may be old and out dated weapons but that is still a lot of firepower going towards a natural choke point and don't think Chiefs Assault rifle was more powerful than all of those guns combined together. Maybe if they had changed it to a Few Elites dying or having the Elites Sprint towards in an all out Blitzs right after the gate are blown open this would not be so bad other than that the Impact of the 7.62x51 rounds and the plasma bolts should have more impact on both the Chief and Elites Shields/bodies feels to weak to me. Other than that this show was so so to me, I will need more from it.

Why wouldn't they have access to full metal jacket rounds? those are just basic training rounds Target rounds whatever you want to call them they're the most plentiful round you can find
8:06 This is a good example of my gripes with the CGI. Everything looks out of place, the elite isnt even modeled on the ground, they either have no shadows at all or totally incorrect once, the plasma pistol isn't even modeled/colored in the final shot, and then the POV with the pistol looked HORRIBLE. With a budget of 10m an episode and this being where they had to convince everyone I'm not holding my breath that it'll get much better. That and the fact that the elites look closer to the fucking Krogans from mass effect than they do ANY elite variation we have ever had speaks volumes.
Thank you, finally someone gets it. The I don't think the Chiefs armor looks bulky enough in the front. The shadows should look better, the elites heads look off in shape and their armor isn't as good as Halo 3 or Reach. The physics of them getting hit with .50. Cal rounds doesn't look quite right.
I’ll have to rewatch the scene, but perhaps in the stress of the situation and lack of training, the Innies were just missing most of their shots with the machine guns. But then in Chief’s hands, he has the training to compensate for spread and recoil.
This is the video I was exactly looking for, but even better! Loved the attention for the details, whatever small or big. You got a new sub mate. Amazing work in this one. As for Easter Eggs and References... 1. When I saw that "last" Elite in the cave, I thought it was an Inquisitor, due the greyish color and particular design of the armor. 2. It was nice to see Reach still standing, if you get my meaning. The city looks a lot like the one from Halo Reach, even Halsey's lab has the same structural layout. 3. I totally agree that Halsey is a force to be reckoned. And quite scary. But I think the actress should smile... A bit less? But that's personal opinion. Overall, the actress does a marvelous job. 4. It's amazing how she told directly and upfront to the Silver Team: "Command asked you to do one thing... But you won't do that. You will do what I say" and they just complied., even acknowledged that some "friendly fire" was expected. That's so Spartan-II and do love that small but important detail. ...In other life, I would be a fine Spartan-II, that's for sure. If those were Spartan-IVs we can expect a lot of "moral debate" about it, as we learned from Fireteam Osiris.
I did liked the first episode and I'm going to enjoy watching the rest of the series and it's version of the Halo Universe. I also enjoyed your review and breakdown of the first episode as well of the hidden easter eggs you found.
Finally! This was the review I was waiting for! I’m very pleased with this “silver timeline” so far, and how they’ve combine many event elements from core canon in order to make this new “silver timeline” truly unique. I’m really looking forward to how they adapt Soren and how deep Cortana’s role will be with Chief.
I think the one gripe I had with this show was how fast they just showed off chief face, in the first episode like it a big reveal, which kind of makes me think they had zero faith in chief just being the faceless hero of the show. Which personally I feel like kind of ruins it a bit cause, the helmet has kind of just been his face, taking it off kind of just ruins it and plays into that really old thing, that halo fan use to make a big deal about, but now just really don't care. Ya can still do the big reveal, but maybe they should have waited like a few more episode to do it? The Mandalorian did the face reveal pretty well two times both done in meaningful moments and close to the end.
Hope you continue these vids. As a fan of the series who didn't play the games, it's a nice primer about the lore. Most other vids I've seen are hours-long cinematic compilations, or explainer videos made by game fans for game fans that rely on a lot of jargon and layers of references I just am not aware of.
I had to stop and geek out with glee several times, especially at the ME Easter egg. I loved Chief taking off his helmet - it was the quickest way for him to save both of them, and showed how humble he is as a person.
The lore?? Easter eggs? An Easter egg would be somehow incorporating the skulls from the games... And as far as lore they completely botched everything. It doesn't feel like halo when you watch it, and the only thing i can get behind is the covenant slaughtering civilians which they would have just glassed over that small outpost to begin with.
My guess is (based on what we've seen in the trialers) is John as a 6 year old had already seen one of these artifacts and it possibly already imprinted on him. Then when he touched this one it triggered those memories from that time. They show in the trailer he is in a different cave discovering another artifact.
The video we were ALL waiting for. Good or bad, we can always trust you to be honest. And for lore and tidbits and fun little Easter eggs? You got this.
I actually like that they are going back to rogue chief. It was a plot point in all the leadup to 5 that just collapsed. There is potential, so I am looking forward to a better rendition (hopefully)
@@gabnel1000 well we don't get Halo stories very often let alone a show lol How they are approaching the story is fresh because the games 5 specifically, tried this rogue chief thing and it sucked but works for me here. It's also fresh to see a cinematic take on the lore before the games.

You missed something! When the Chief initially gets into the 2v1 situation with the Sword Elites, you can see Chief's shields shimmer on the side of his armor that the swords graze by. Awesome attention to detail there!
Really enjoyed it. I personally would like to see a good story, and it's been fine so far. This looks like its going to be a really good sci fi offering.
@@kobi7955 The only way I could see someone giving any level of merit to the plot & pacing of this show is if its their first foray into science fiction as an entertainment genre and if they had no awareness of Halo prior. Otherwise on both of those metrics, the show is objectively very poor.
I know it's pretty obvious but i notice that silver team is an interpretation of blue team, somebody heard the active camo sound? And the fact the insurrectionists believed the covenant was UNSC propaganda? i heard that in the core canon some insurrectionist believed the covenant was fake

@@darienford860 so the Master Chief uses projectile weapons all the time. It’s really hard to believe that a rebel group fighting against the UNSC is gonna have one of the oldest model projectile weapons? There’s not a lot of differences in functionality of the AR and BR. They simply have a digital readout of ammo left and use armor piercing rounds to be more effective against the convenant. If I relied on reviews to tell me if I like something, I would have missed a lot of shows and movies that I enjoyed. We see elites, a banshee, a phantom, plasma rifle, plasma pistol, AR, DMR, proper Spartan HUD, pelican, warthog, high charity, a covenant profit, Halsey, Keys (both of them), reach, a Halsey flash clone that is used to creat Cortana, we see that the Spartans really answer to Halsey, and forerunner tech to name a few. So we saw a lot. Still haven’t seen cortana or an actual Halo. Many species of the covenant left to see as well.
The alternative tech changes are a struggle to get used to. I found it uncanny that the spartan shields have no visible refresh and the elite shields have a much less clear break; elements that aren't needed outside gameplay, but they had a nice visual aesthetic in the games that are lost in the show. I also wish they handled the humanizing of chief better. You can have the scene play the same, just don't let the audience see his face yet and it's the best of both worlds
they should have just copy and patsed the game story starting from slightly before first contact with the covenant which would have come from the books.
I see some people are very angry about the tv series are not staying true to the Canon of Halo. Like Chief wear a Mark VI before fall of reach something that is very odd. People have to remember that the Tv series is not canon to the lore we know about. "The highly anticipated Halo TV series coming to Paramount+ in 2022 will have a completely ((different canon)) than that of the beloved game series according to Kiki Wolfkill, the studio head for transmedia at 343 Industries, which is home of the Halo Universe."
The way the Elites are portrayed is perfect. In the games, they’re the above average soldier of the Covenant. In the shows, they are the terrifying, fanatical super soldiers that they really were during the war. Perfect
I really appreciate this breakdown, I read a bunch of the books and played the first 3 games religiously as a kid. All I can hope is that some of the story points start to make a little more sense for the universe they're set in. But, love seeing the Easter eggs and breakdown of canon I've mostly forgotten.
Sir I love this first episode I watched it about three times. For me I have no expectation cuz I never played Halo. But I am so glad you pointed out something I said from my very first watch. And that's the machine gun turret it wasn't doing that much damage all the sudden when Master Chief picked it up it became lethal. A hero Trope but I still love this episode and I'm looking forward to more
I like how you picked apart every little nuance of detail of the weapons, history and vehicles but kept your mouth shut when both Keyes and Parangosky were brownwashed characters
despite the legitimate issues with the show (casting and CG quality mostly) i do legitimately think the show knows the lore and respects it. they're just using the lore in a different way.
I also think that Makee is being used as a tool and not actually special even in the eyes of the prophets but must be made to appear divine in order to be accepted among them as a tool.
I'm just laughing at the idea of Halsey dressing her illegally created, home-grown, rapidly aged flash clone. Parangosky walks in like: "Sooo, Halsey. In the span of several months I see you ordered some toddler-sized medically integrated scrubs. Then some early-adolescent sized scrubs shortly thereafter. Then teen sized. And now adult. Whatcha... whatcha doin' in there?" That clone's a brain in a vat for all Halsey cares. I don't see why she'd even bother to put clothes on it. It's a slab of meat.
I've read quite a few books (thanks to audible) and I was getting frustrated at all the Halo TH-cam videos bashing on the show that didn't see some of the things I did. Needless to say when I saw Halo Canon uploaded a video I picked it as fast as I could. ALL BOW TO HALO CANON. Great video! I learned so much more than I could have on my own.
It's honestly really interesting and refreshing to hear that background music. It's In The Clear from Halo: Spartan Strike. Honestly those two top down shooter games really have some of the best soundtracks in the whole franchise. Really refreshing to hear those again after years.
As a member of the USNC since my first drop in Aught one on Installation 04, I've followed a d play Halo pretty much daily ever since. The fact the models are Reach era, and this takes place before any of the games (just ignoring the dates helps A LOT), I can accept this timeline as the period that John transitions from a point and click killing machine to the person with doubts, second guessing and insight that we've been in game. 8.3/10. Some cgi was wonky, but, I'm spoiled. *WORT intensifies*
The Halsey's computer website added a lot of extra lore to the show, and I love it. Such as Harvest being glasses in 2040 in this canon, and Chief being 25 in the show.

When I saw that first plasma rifle shot hit it's target and the following chaos delt by plasma weapons I felt very refreshed as after reading how deadly plasma weapons are in books I've always wanted to see how horrific they actually were in game to would be cool to see the flood at some point in the first season or the second would 100% hang around for that

It's like they reached into my brain and put to screen EXACTLY how I imagined what happens to people and surfaces struck by plasma fire, based on how they were described in the books.
A small detailed that my friend and I noticed and liked was that the DMR used seemed to be firing in full-auto, which was apparently a feature on the Reach DMR. Sadly in-game the fire selector switch cannot be flipped tho.

The Producers of the show already stated that they will create thier own "vision" of Halo verse (perhaps due some non disclosured legal quarels between them and Halo IP owners (kind of like CBS vs Paramount which lead to creation of the Kelvin timeline because in 2008 CBS said very strict NO GO for anything post Nemesis timeline (which new movie was planned to be)) so they get *very limited* rights to use source material... but the rest (including the Universe) they needed to create on their own...
But that's just my personal theory anyway. 😉

Maybe Chief was just aiming better with the 50 cal. The general and the other guy might have been spraying more than focusing fire. I know they seem to be holding the 50 cal steady but maybe chiefs suit just helped him to aim each bullet with maximum efficiency, shreddering through the elites depleted shields. Or the director just wanted a cool turret scene and didn't really think about it enough. Probably that one.
The angle probably helped too, Cheif is below the Sangheili, the last guy on it was atop a Technical, which aren’t known to be stable gun platforms
Pretty sure those guns fire a smaller round, like the 7.62 as they do currently. Based on all the other guns they have, it doesn't appear they have any thing larger that .30 caliber.
It was a minugun they fire depleted uranium rounds in a little bigger round of a 7.62mm
@@thatsubarutho8806 That may be true for military miniguns, but the likelihood of civilians (even insurrectionists) having depleted uranium rounds is low. but those turrets were definitely based around the M134 which fires 7.62x51 NATO so the damage inconsistency is odd.
Would need more episodes to find out but something interesting was that the master chief's shield recharged in the fight but if you notice for example the final elite killed (one who killed the general), his shields did not recharge. There are also some other parts during the fight that seem to suggest their shield might not recharge and that they were whittled down which could possibly be an explanation for why the gun was able to easily kill 3 elites when they couldn't before...But I think it was a rule of cool logic moment probably.

I'll be THAT GUY and just say I loved it. I thought the first episode was amazing. I'm not gonna cry that the show has its own halo theme song. Doesn't bother me. loved Halsey. Loved the acting. Loved the characters. Loved the dialog. Loved the hour long episode. The show and the studio are doing great by me in the first episode. Nice to have you review the show in a positive way. Seems like lots of hate floating around out there for some pretty lame reasons.

Visually the show looks amazing, i love how they are incorporating aspects from the books and games. My only gripe so far is the story, it feels like it's trying to start several plot points that feel unnecessary or are too confusing. It also looks like they're trying to make the show accessible to people that haven't played the games or read the books while also trying to call back to stuff only preexisting fans would know, but in doing so it made the show very confusing on both ends. If i were somebody that had never heard of Halo and saw this on Paramount+ it would be jarring and uncomfortable.
9:36 Oh i thought he was only labeled Demon because he blew up the ring later on.. i found it weird for them to call him demon but i didnt know they just generically referred to all spartans as demon. I thought this because in Halo when Locke is talking to an Elite he mentions that they refer to John as a demon and only him specifically.
Yeah the covenant called all Spartans demons due to how many warriors they killed and how they looked like faceless killers do to their helmets
Locke spoke to The Arbiter, and he calls 117 "The Demon". The one who has done more damage to the covenant than any other, seeing as he almost single handedly destroyed the first Halo ring. Which was The Arbiters duty to protect. Clarifying for those who don't know.
The sound design (wort wort), armor, and weapons are spot on. I love the attention to detail. It's fantastic that each weapon behaves in a plausible manner, especially the plasma weapons. Showing Chief's face was definitely a risk, but I'm a fan of humanizing larger than life characters and I think the show is nailing that so far. The covenant design is awkward, though. Some shots are perfect and others feel recognizably cgi. I love that the audience is left to decide whether the UNSC is the lesser of two evils when compared to the Covenant. That being said, The Covenant is solidly cult like.
The reviewer is most definitely not a halo fan. The creator of the show completely twisted the story.
As a huge skeptic I was drawn in by episode 1. Yes they're drawbacks but I actually loved seeing some of this stuff in live action
THIS IS IT! This is the review I was waiting for!! & it did not disappoint. In fact, I have yet to see a HC video that I can find ANY fault with. That being said, I throughly loved the pilot episode and thought that it delivered a STRONG opening into the HALO universe, as it is apparent that the production has opted to look to the books, rather than the Bungie era games (Especially), for their source material. Everything from the look, sounds, conflicts involving the insurrectionists/UNSC & the shady involvement of Naval Intelligence has me hyped AF! If this is what we can look forward to seeing more of in the Silver Timeline, then I am totally happy & onboard for the experience!!🥰😍🥰

Ok while I enjoy the action I do have my grips with the show mostly with the actual story not really catching my eye I enjoy the fight scenes they are amazing but with the actual story not really being appealing like the covenant having a human among their high level ranks instead of a prisoner I am not 100% on board with that and I am not a big fan of Captain and Miranda Keyes in the show I prefer them in the old books and well games I do plan on continuing my watch of the show before I give a full opinion but I’m not too optimistic about the story being great but if it’s not it’s at least a stepping stone for us to get that great halo movie or TV series so if this show is bad we are at least halfway there

I'll continue to watch nonetheless even tho Halsey & Keyes are much too young. Hopefully, some explanations will tie things together & possibly, as you stated, provide stepping stones to a more fleshed-out feature &/or TV series.
Agreed!, I am so tired of seeing reviews complaining that "It sucks because the story doesn't line up with the games." We have known that it wasn't going to be that. I enjoy the air of mystery in not knowing what's coming. I want to be surprised! Even if they portrayed stories from the books, or filling in the gaps, you will always know how it ends, and what will be coming, who will die and who will live. Doing it this way gives them free reign to subvert our expectations and give us something that we don't know the journey or the destination, but we do know the elements that make it up. And for that, I am all aboard.

I see a lot of people complaining about how the show doesn’t portray “humanity’s desperation” and their “threat of extinction” against the Covenant. But you bring up a good point, this appears to be so early on in the war (despite taking place in 2552) that the Covenant is only picking at the outter colonies for the purposes of excavation, and perhaps haven’t even begun their campaign of genocide against the humans. It doesn’t seem like they fully understand that the humans are the reclaimers yet, which would have been their motive for going to all out war with humanity. We’ll probably see the fall of Reach and the first Halo ring afterwards pretty soon. I’m fairly confident they wouldn’t end the first season without getting to at least the first Halo ring

Qwan was being beyond stupid though. The covenant killed her dad, friends, and comrades. Instead of realizing that genocidal space aliens are coming for everyone, she would rather threaten Keyes that she’s going to lie that the UNSC killed those people? Whatever drugs she’s took have rotted her brain. She’s a prisoner who just threw out any reason to be kept alive or be set free. It’s bad writing, it makes no sense, and it’s only done so Chief can go “awol”. Then she also threatens Chief with a gun, despite witnessing him murder the elites that wiped out her enclave. The show as a whole has lots of poor decisions but god damn it sucks that Chief’s sidekick for the whole show is going to be an insufferable crazy person with a stupid haircut.

I find it sad that this show was made into a seperate canon as it will make a lot of peoples first experience with Halo be a completely different world/universe with a lot of the things we love about it being completely different which i feel like takes a lot away from the story itself. Not to mention this would have been the perfect way to get people into the Universe we all know and love and then flesh out some of things we knew less about. Also i would have loved to see a story of the First contact and how scary that really must have been. slowly realising that all of humanity is under attack by a foreign and much more technologically advanced race that wants nothing more than to exterminate the human race.
yes this would entail us seeing humanity getting it's ass kicked the first season or couple of seasons but hey that would have just made it much more engaging and ''scary'' to watch.
Well maybe if the producers bothered to use the lore instead of looking over it and making their own, it wouldn't have had 265 failed drafts before going "Its an alt timeline"

Could not agree more. I'm tired of all the doom and gloom "fans" hating on the show for not following "tHe LoRe" when they prepared us ahead of time by establishing this is a separate timeline. It's fantastic so far and even my wife is digging it.
Exactly, yeah some of the CGI shots were strange, and Chief showing his face was jarring, but I sick of people calling me and others “fake halo fans” just because we don’t criticize the smallest bits of the show, a DAY after it comes out. We need to be looking at the positives so hopefully we can get more Halo related content. Kinda like with what happened with a certain show who’s protagonist everyone seems to compare to the Chief…

I’ve been through more than one adaptation of something (Dune, Ender’s Game, and a Wings of Fire show upcoming) and I just want an adaptation for something that I like to not be so divided. I just hope people will stop trying to watch something looking for every little thing to complain about.

I figure the Master Chief being more effective with the chaingun might be an Aliens pulse rifle situation - the MJOLNIR is making tiny adjustments with the grip and aim to make what would normally be a wide-spread weapon into something much more accurate, able to concentrate that fire making it more effective. Given it's the future, it might even be tapping into a preexisting smart-uplink that the Insurrectionists, with less resources and technical ability, can't access.

I honestly did enjoy it more then I thought I would. Only real issue I had was the brainwashing bit but overall pretty good.
My Biggest Complaint was just how powerful the Elites Shields where when fighting the Insurrectionist especially when they where just Elite Minors except for one. To be more exact the Scene where they blow open the the bases gates and walk Nonchalant towards 40 or so insurrectionists with 2 two chain guns and a lot of our current day weapons. Yes these may be old and out dated weapons but that is still a lot of firepower going towards a natural choke point and don't think Chiefs Assault rifle was more powerful than all of those guns combined together. Maybe if they had changed it to a Few Elites dying or having the Elites Sprint towards in an all out Blitzs right after the gate are blown open this would not be so bad other than that the Impact of the 7.62x51 rounds and the plasma bolts should have more impact on both the Chief and Elites Shields/bodies feels to weak to me. Other than that this show was so so to me, I will need more from it.

Why wouldn't they have access to full metal jacket rounds? those are just basic training rounds Target rounds whatever you want to call them they're the most plentiful round you can find
8:06 This is a good example of my gripes with the CGI. Everything looks out of place, the elite isnt even modeled on the ground, they either have no shadows at all or totally incorrect once, the plasma pistol isn't even modeled/colored in the final shot, and then the POV with the pistol looked HORRIBLE. With a budget of 10m an episode and this being where they had to convince everyone I'm not holding my breath that it'll get much better. That and the fact that the elites look closer to the fucking Krogans from mass effect than they do ANY elite variation we have ever had speaks volumes.
Thank you, finally someone gets it. The I don't think the Chiefs armor looks bulky enough in the front. The shadows should look better, the elites heads look off in shape and their armor isn't as good as Halo 3 or Reach. The physics of them getting hit with .50. Cal rounds doesn't look quite right.
I’ll have to rewatch the scene, but perhaps in the stress of the situation and lack of training, the Innies were just missing most of their shots with the machine guns. But then in Chief’s hands, he has the training to compensate for spread and recoil.

As for Easter Eggs and References...
1. When I saw that "last" Elite in the cave, I thought it was an Inquisitor, due the greyish color and particular design of the armor.
2. It was nice to see Reach still standing, if you get my meaning. The city looks a lot like the one from Halo Reach, even Halsey's lab has the same structural layout.
3. I totally agree that Halsey is a force to be reckoned. And quite scary. But I think the actress should smile... A bit less? But that's personal opinion. Overall, the actress does a marvelous job.
4. It's amazing how she told directly and upfront to the Silver Team: "Command asked you to do one thing... But you won't do that. You will do what I say" and they just complied., even acknowledged that some "friendly fire" was expected. That's so Spartan-II and do love that small but important detail.
...In other life, I would be a fine Spartan-II, that's for sure.
If those were Spartan-IVs we can expect a lot of "moral debate" about it, as we learned from Fireteam Osiris.
I did liked the first episode and I'm going to enjoy watching the rest of the series and it's version of the Halo Universe.

Finally! This was the review I was waiting for! I’m very pleased with this “silver timeline” so far, and how they’ve combine many event elements from core canon in order to make this new “silver timeline” truly unique. I’m really looking forward to how they adapt Soren and how deep Cortana’s role will be with Chief.
I think the one gripe I had with this show was how fast they just showed off chief face, in the first episode like it a big reveal, which kind of makes me think they had zero faith in chief just being the faceless hero of the show. Which personally I feel like kind of ruins it a bit cause, the helmet has kind of just been his face, taking it off kind of just ruins it and plays into that really old thing, that halo fan use to make a big deal about, but now just really don't care. Ya can still do the big reveal, but maybe they should have waited like a few more episode to do it? The Mandalorian did the face reveal pretty well two times both done in meaningful moments and close to the end.
Hope you continue these vids. As a fan of the series who didn't play the games, it's a nice primer about the lore. Most other vids I've seen are hours-long cinematic compilations, or explainer videos made by game fans for game fans that rely on a lot of jargon and layers of references I just am not aware of.
I had to stop and geek out with glee several times, especially at the ME Easter egg. I loved Chief taking off his helmet - it was the quickest way for him to save both of them, and showed how humble he is as a person.
I love how chill or relaxed you are about this series.

The lore?? Easter eggs? An Easter egg would be somehow incorporating the skulls from the games... And as far as lore they completely botched everything. It doesn't feel like halo when you watch it, and the only thing i can get behind is the covenant slaughtering civilians which they would have just glassed over that small outpost to begin with.

My guess is (based on what we've seen in the trialers) is John as a 6 year old had already seen one of these artifacts and it possibly already imprinted on him. Then when he touched this one it triggered those memories from that time. They show in the trailer he is in a different cave discovering another artifact.

I actually like that they are going back to rogue chief. It was a plot point in all the leadup to 5 that just collapsed. There is potential, so I am looking forward to a better rendition (hopefully)
@@gabnel1000 well we don't get Halo stories very often let alone a show lol How they are approaching the story is fresh because the games 5 specifically, tried this rogue chief thing and it sucked but works for me here. It's also fresh to see a cinematic take on the lore before the games.
Agreed, I enjoyed it and look forward to more, the story just feels a bit weird. But I'm not complaining.

Played halo since the beginning (I'm old... I know) just found this Chanel and love the insight on the show, because I've read the books and lore and great to hear the differences on the two time lines, great stuff!
You missed something! When the Chief initially gets into the 2v1 situation with the Sword Elites, you can see Chief's shields shimmer on the side of his armor that the swords graze by. Awesome attention to detail there!
Loved the Elite body blocking the car without hesitation, demonstrates their size and strength well.
14:53 this spade-mounted machine gun might have been a different model to the ones that were used at the gates. Or it was using different ammunition

I have a question. Which humans are the ones who cannot activate forerunner relics? I've never heard of this. Are they altered in some way.
Really enjoyed it. I personally would like to see a good story, and it's been fine so far. This looks like its going to be a really good sci fi offering.

@@kobi7955 The only way I could see someone giving any level of merit to the plot & pacing of this show is if its their first foray into science fiction as an entertainment genre and if they had no awareness of Halo prior.
Otherwise on both of those metrics, the show is objectively very poor.
I know it's pretty obvious but i notice that silver team is an interpretation of blue team, somebody heard the active camo sound? And the fact the insurrectionists believed the covenant was UNSC propaganda? i heard that in the core canon some insurrectionist believed the covenant was fake
I hope The Prophets are using the Ava Max/ Lady Gaga look alike as a puppet and they end up disposing of her in some sort of gruesome manner.
I like how this series is showing what we haven't seen during the war

I like how you take a page out of red vs blue's book, and instead of showing your face, or just being some random voice, you give a character via halo model.

It's a solid pilot episode for the story. It introduced us to the Halo world/universe and gave a lot that it can flesh out going forward.
No it's not buddy and the reviews show it's not. AK-47s in the year 2552 🤔. This was only one episode it didn't show much at all

@@darienford860 so the Master Chief uses projectile weapons all the time. It’s really hard to believe that a rebel group fighting against the UNSC is gonna have one of the oldest model projectile weapons?
There’s not a lot of differences in functionality of the AR and BR. They simply have a digital readout of ammo left and use armor piercing rounds to be more effective against the convenant.
If I relied on reviews to tell me if I like something, I would have missed a lot of shows and movies that I enjoyed.
We see elites, a banshee, a phantom, plasma rifle, plasma pistol, AR, DMR, proper Spartan HUD, pelican, warthog, high charity, a covenant profit, Halsey, Keys (both of them), reach, a Halsey flash clone that is used to creat Cortana, we see that the Spartans really answer to Halsey, and forerunner tech to name a few. So we saw a lot.
Still haven’t seen cortana or an actual Halo. Many species of the covenant left to see as well.
Yes that’s the next series I really want to see as a show!! Mass Effect!!!!
The alternative tech changes are a struggle to get used to. I found it uncanny that the spartan shields have no visible refresh and the elite shields have a much less clear break; elements that aren't needed outside gameplay, but they had a nice visual aesthetic in the games that are lost in the show. I also wish they handled the humanizing of chief better. You can have the scene play the same, just don't let the audience see his face yet and it's the best of both worlds
they should have just copy and patsed the game story starting from slightly before first contact with the covenant which would have come from the books.
I see some people are very angry about the tv series are not staying true to the Canon of Halo. Like Chief wear a Mark VI before fall of reach something that is very odd. People have to remember that the Tv series is not canon to the lore we know about.

The way the Elites are portrayed is perfect. In the games, they’re the above average soldier of the Covenant. In the shows, they are the terrifying, fanatical super soldiers that they really were during the war. Perfect
I really appreciate this breakdown, I read a bunch of the books and played the first 3 games religiously as a kid. All I can hope is that some of the story points start to make a little more sense for the universe they're set in. But, love seeing the Easter eggs and breakdown of canon I've mostly forgotten.
Sir I love this first episode I watched it about three times. For me I have no expectation cuz I never played Halo. But I am so glad you pointed out something I said from my very first watch. And that's the machine gun turret it wasn't doing that much damage all the sudden when Master Chief picked it up it became lethal. A hero Trope but I still love this episode and I'm looking forward to more

I like how you picked apart every little nuance of detail of the weapons, history and vehicles but kept your mouth shut when both Keyes and Parangosky were brownwashed characters
The AR's sound when it fired brought a smile to my face.
despite the legitimate issues with the show (casting and CG quality mostly) i do legitimately think the show knows the lore and respects it. they're just using the lore in a different way.
I also think that Makee is being used as a tool and not actually special even in the eyes of the prophets but must be made to appear divine in order to be accepted among them as a tool.
I liked the way the Spartans moved in combat, they move quickly, almost unnaturally

I'm just laughing at the idea of Halsey dressing her illegally created, home-grown, rapidly aged flash clone. Parangosky walks in like:
"Sooo, Halsey. In the span of several months I see you ordered some toddler-sized medically integrated scrubs.
Then some early-adolescent sized scrubs shortly thereafter.
Then teen sized. And now adult.
Whatcha... whatcha doin' in there?"
That clone's a brain in a vat for all Halsey cares. I don't see why she'd even bother to put clothes on it. It's a slab of meat.

But UNSC has been shown a villain here knowing that john killed quan's mother made me feel bad just because he was following order without questioning
I've read quite a few books (thanks to audible) and I was getting frustrated at all the Halo TH-cam videos bashing on the show that didn't see some of the things I did. Needless to say when I saw Halo Canon uploaded a video I picked it as fast as I could. ALL BOW TO HALO CANON. Great video! I learned so much more than I could have on my own.

It's honestly really interesting and refreshing to hear that background music. It's In The Clear from Halo: Spartan Strike. Honestly those two top down shooter games really have some of the best soundtracks in the whole franchise. Really refreshing to hear those again after years.
As a member of the USNC since my first drop in Aught one on Installation 04, I've followed a d play Halo pretty much daily ever since. The fact the models are Reach era, and this takes place before any of the games (just ignoring the dates helps A LOT), I can accept this timeline as the period that John transitions from a point and click killing machine to the person with doubts, second guessing and insight that we've been in game. 8.3/10. Some cgi was wonky, but, I'm spoiled. *WORT intensifies*

The Halsey's computer website added a lot of extra lore to the show, and I love it.
Such as Harvest being glasses in 2040 in this canon, and Chief being 25 in the show.
