Well imagine being a first Gen student that came from poverty. Going to a university like you did is only a dream for us.
Though I'm not first gen myself, I have a lot of respect for anyone who overcomes the numerous obstacles on the road to success - in fact, many of the first gen students I know from college are the hardest working and most down-to-earth people I've ever met! Keep your head up Phil!
why only a dream? if you're from poverty you will get a full ride to any school. first gen and succeeding in poverty also are really strong application points which will help you get in.
@@ancellery6430 not everyone gets full rides. Believe me.
@@realactionphil1 all ivies guarantee full rides if you’re in poverty
This was a really well-made video, when I clicked on it I thought it said 462,000 views not 462 lol. keep it up bro your gonna blow up.
You guys are too kind - thanks for sticking around!
I really really enjoy your videos and i'm binge wathcing them. You've covered a lot of great topics and i've learned a lot. Could you possibly make a video about the actual financial aspects of the work you've done as an investment banker, and currently as a consultant. Not necessarily comparing the two, but just to give a deeper insight on the actual financial work you're working on day to day and the expertise that it requires. The financial intensity. THis could include the different company valuations method, business model overviews, strategic excel models etc. Thank you very much, you seem to be working very hard.
Hey Emil! Glad you're enjoying the vids. I will add your suggestion to my running list of video ideas, thanks for being here!

Great video! Give me a different way to look at prestige which is not the way to value our worth but as a tool to open different doors to reach my career goal. 👏
Yep, that's the right way to think about it! Thanks for watching!
Hi Matt, I'm a fresh grad trying hard to be a consultant though my background seems to be a block. I have been watching you lately and the experiences were amazing.

Agreed,prestige is short term think…
Hi Matt. Arguably some skill are highly trainable if u born with prestigous uni. Such as be a critical thinker , leadership skills, mutitasker, those are easily attainale or trainable and highly corelated with academia performance 😂 plus the way trained and taught in those school may slightly differ from normal uni. But to leverage on their capacity is way more improtant 😊 personally speaking. To get that prestigous paper is the first step otherwise may deviate your path much farther away from top tier firm 😂
Agreed - attending a prestigious school tends to socialize students to succeed in business roles like IB or consulting. That said, everything is technically trainable and anybody with enough work ethic and the right resources / mentors can be very successful in their career. Thanks for watching!
It's not just building up confidence. If you don't have parents who support you financially, pursuing prestigious jobs is often the fastest way to build up savings. If you have a safety net financially and psychologically, you have the option to fail when trying new things. I totally think it's selling out cuz a lot of the work you do at these companies isn't making the world a better place (or it's actively making it worse). Yet it's absolutely the safest wealth-building option for immigrant, first-gen, and low income 20-somethings. Almost everyone I know in their 30s and 40s with the flexibility to do what they love either had rich parents or sold out in their 20s. You can't start a business/non-profit without money, you probably won't be the best activist or artist you can be if you're homeless.
Great perspective! Having the financial freedom to do you own thing or pursue a passion project is a luxury that few have when they are young, so that developing that financial/psychological safety net is key.
Do you matter more as a person if you come from pretige and have "top tier" glamorous jobs like IB? Feels like I'm missing out
Great question. IMO your worth shouldn’t depend on whether you come from prestige, since nobody gets to pick the cards they’re dealt. I think it’s valuable to try and aim high and set goals you’re proud of, but everyone feels like they’re missing out to some degree - students wanna be Ibankers, Ibankers wanna be in private equity, and PE guys wanna go to hedge funds. These guys all see the millionaire entrepreneur and wish they had a more flexible lifestyle. It’s an endless cycle of comparison and wanting more.
Help I’m at a non-target & live in the hood. 😢
I think the term is "insecure overachivers"
I kinda disagree that prestige is important initially as most successful people do not have such backgrounds, although probably from a risk-adjusted standpoint that is true
Hey Resa, thanks for the clarification! Fair point, there are many successful people who didn't come from prestigious backgrounds - although having a well-known brand on your resume helps, it's definitely not a prerequisite to success
You're such a sellout Matt...
jk, I think there's a pinch of truth to that that business school students often try to compensate for something with their job, but a lot of the high-profile guys only stay for a couple of years and then do their own thing, so I believe that the sellout phase is often just temporary
You guys keep me humble 😅 but in all seriousness I agree 100%, it’s normal to go through these phases
so immediately after watching just the first minute intro, some people are born into circumstances where they have to "sell out" and they dont have the privilege to pursue their passions. a quick retort to being called a sell out is to let them know they have some serious white privilege :)
Thats a good observation! Thanks for being here 🙂
