Felt like posting something different from my typical videos - recently I've been feeling like I'm just going through the motions, and so this video is my best attempt to encapsulate those feelings.
This is easily one of my favourite videos you've produced. I think it's really insightful that you shed light on the not so glamorous side of the corporate world. Looking back, would you suggest seeking a more enjoyable or fulfilling career path while in college, or taking your path of grinding in IB/consulting to get more lucrative exit ops? I see the merits of both sides and I think taking the traditional path of going into the corporate world is a more risk-averse option, but I also feel like it's just delaying the point where you truly realize what you're passionate about and what fulfills you.
Hey Luke, thanks for the comment - really great to hear that you resonated with this one. Looking back, I still think there's merit in pursuing a role like IB/Consulting, because for most people (myself included), it's difficult to know what you really want/value when you're a student. I think the only way to really know if you enjoy something is to do it, and I personally don't regret my IB experience because it forced me to confront a lot of hard questions early on, like "what do I value?" or "how much am I willing to sacrifice for money/success?". That said, I also think if you know early on what you're passionate about, then you should 100% go for it sooner rather than later.
Hey Matt, 100% understand how you're feeling. I started a new tech strategy role recently and I've felt extremely beat down, sad and anxious every night knowing that I have to wake up and do it all again. Im not sure if its the long hours? The pressure? Imposter syndrome? But agree with you that you just need to take it one day at a time. Ive realised emotions are fleeting, some days i feel like life has no meaning, other days i feel on top of the world. Funny that my ego wont let me quit as I know life gets better. Really appreciate seeing this video this morning before i start getting ready for work! Keep pushing Matt 😊
Hey Matt, I just want you to know that your authenticity and openness to share have impacted so many people just from reading the comments. And I really admire you for that. Keep up the good work! I resonate a lot with what you’re going through and I have also found happiness in things I do outside of work. When I feel burnout, acknowledging it is definitely a good first step. So, well done Matt! Taking time to reconnect with friends or meeting new people from different walks of life also help me to reignite the passion and motivation. The past two years have been tough on me and I try to look at sufferings or adversities as a gift that will help me to bounce forward in life. Still trying my best so all the best to us! 😊
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
really enjoying your content. im in IB and thinking of switching to consulting, and your video resonated really strongly with the paralysis of choice i'm feeling lately too.
Thank you this video was amazing. Yesterday night I was panicking about what I need to do and if I'm behind compared to everyone. Knowing that others are in similar places shows I'm not alone. Thanks again.
Really appreciated this video! The disillusionment of the "dream" post-grad job is so real and something my friend group often talks about. Also, loved this style of a personal opinion piece
Appreciate the honesty and transparency. I’m experiencing this myself (left IB and trying to get through this quarter life crisis now haha 😅). All the best on your journey and wishing you continued success with the channel
Hi Matt. Thank you for sharing this. I am one of your subscribers since the early days and even got a chance to have my resume checked couple of days ago. I mean, it's unfortunate that we haven't met in person, but know that what you're doing has a major impact in my life as an ambitious yet super anxious fresh grad. You're a wonderful person, one whom I look up to. Tuning in to your videos keeps me motivated. So chin up, you've been doing great. Remember that we're still young and it's normal to have this sort of quarter life crisis. Look around you, there are many people who has gone through that and turned out fine. It might be frustrating but I guess we don't have to find the answer for everything right now. For me, life is full of trial and error processes, so I won't let any single thing worry me too much. Instead, I'll embrace each challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow. Hope everything will work out for the best.
Gosh Matt, you are a true inspiration! Such honesty and vulnerability are rare, but so very precious. You have had the courage to openly say what so many others feel and try to hide. You are very brave! Feeling like the hamster on the wheel is very draining and can get to the point of being unbearable. Starting my own business was the scariest prospect that I have ever faced, but it was my way of getting out of the corporate trap. I get to work with clients and other professionals that I truly respect, on projects that mean something to me. It does take some time be become established, and the path can become rocky and uncertain on occasion, but feeling in control of my own destiny vastly outweighs the negatives.
Hey Colette! I appreciate the kind words, and thanks for sharing your story. I’m glad to hear that you’ve found enjoyment in starting your own business!
Loved this video. Really well made and emotional, hit the spot. You said something along the lines that execution has always been easy for you, can you please make a video on how to make execution easy? It can be the mindset, habits, approach etc
As someone going through my final year of college, I've found your content inspiring and helpful in figuring out what is out there. You've really had an impact on me Matt.
I have been an SDE about the same as you, and have had this same feeling since last 2-3 months.... thank you for making this, coz I felt am I the only one feeling like it....
Hey Matt, this hits close to home, and something I've been thinking about for a long time. I've been working my corporate gig for less than a year now, but feel similarly to you in terms of how I'm going through the motions and feel demotivated by the idea of working harder than others for an end goal that I really don't care (it'll boost my reputation + bonus a bit -for exceeding quarterly expectations). The money is alright, but the purpose of getting money for me is to achieve freedom and happiness, which is ironic since at the end of the day, money cancels out my time/freedom. But, I will say I value money more atm, since it's something I need to help unload my family's burden of debt. Based off your video, I believe the real dream job is a job where it aligns with my goals + gives me a salary - then I wouldn't mind working as hard. You describe how life is suffering and touch a lot on the concepts of Buddhism too - would love to see connections on certain practical applications of or even just this suffering concept from buddhism to your vids from time to time :) Atm, I am working pretty hard and one of the few people to leave the office. But lately, I've been just leaving earlier since I kind of got the memo that my company doesn't value face time that much as opposed to the output, which I respect a lot. I'm getting my work done, but currently having a bit of trouble to see how I can quickly stand out compared to others in order to get a strong reputation and recommendation so I can land that the TRUE dream job. Because I'm not the most social person, aside from talking with members of the team, my goal was to become the guy people go to if they want to find an answer, and also be a workhorse for any large manual tasks such as data mining related (as much as I hate those). Any tips on standing out faster? I'm in Corp. Banking in NYC as well, hopefully we can cross paths one day!
Hey Raymond, love your level of self-reflection. I totally resonate with not being the most social person at work and thus compensating by putting in the hours and being known as the "grinder" who gets shit done. I would say the best way to stand out is to ask more questions and demonstrate you're really listening actively - it's so easy to just zone out of zoom calls where you don't have to speak up. It might sound kinda dumb but perception is honestly more important than actual output (assuming you aren't putting out bad quality work), so I'd try to speak up whenever you can if it's appropriate.
This is a great video, I believe your introspection and perspective on suffering is spot on. Something I have found across my career is that you will suffer no matter what, so might as well suffer for your own project on your own terms. People get lost in the corporate ladder for prestige, but there is a reason most founders that sell their business are wealthier than the MD doing the deal. The founders typically avoided the golden handcuffs.
Brother im studying finance in switzerland right now in my 4th semester and am currently aquiring first clients for a software dev business im starting. Im sure youll understand this im f.ex. writing all these excellent grades and working on 5 projects st the same time but there is no reward for the effort. The grades dont mean nothing, working in consulting and having to do what my boss says all day sounds like shit. If people like you and i have the mental capacity to achieve all these academic and career goals, we need to take the risk and try to make something a career that we truly have full control over like a business for example. This video really hit home for me sorry for the rant, i can see the exact same situation coming my way if i dont find a way out now and feel very anxious about it. I hope that you find your dream job/career/business opportunity and that so do i.
Trust the process ! You are so young still ! You always have time to switch sectors in 2/3 years and do what you want where you want with your experience and your budget
You are doing amazing Matt. This work is psychologically and physically gruelling. They are intertwined. Feeling a bit disillusioned, frustrated, tired, worn down makes complete sense. These questions are all very normal. You are clearly highly intelligent and you have many talents. This is the kind of job that leaves little time for other important parts of life, I.e. a partner and all the beauty that comes with that. It matters. A lot. You are still young but make sure to take time to explore that part of life too. Relationships do contribute enormously to our contentment and satisfaction. I don’t think balance is ever entirely possible. I’m always analyzing as a psychologist! Just some thoughts! You seem like a terrific person. I hope things go extremely well for you in every way Matt. Cheers.
Hey Matt I saw you at beard papa's the other day. I didn't want to bother you since you were with your friends but I just wanted to say I love your videos it helped me so much. Keep doing your thing!
I somehow relate to the content and process of your thinking. Well, I think spending time in the nature might help you with clearer and peaceful mind rather in this intense environment. I agree that life is striving and becoming, which is suffering in essence, and choosing on the right path to suffering is better. Still, we have to be aware when overdriving to certain direction which is attachment, shadow us to other joyful parts of life, causing us more suffering ;)
Thanks for sharing, Matt. I'm much further into my career than you, and I recently had the same dilemma. I chose to walk away from a good career (manager in Fortune 500 company) and career path I'd spent nearly two decades on (including a Ph.D.) to take time for myself and figure out what I want the rest of my career to look like. Coincidentally, my goal is to transition into strategy consulting, but with the realization that it's also just the next step in figuring out who I am. You ask the right question - which goal is worth pursuing and what fulfills you? Reflect on everything you've done, be proud of what you've accomplished, and use that experience to take a step forward each day to the person you want to become. Even if it's not the right answer, each event provides information on what you enjoy and who you are, and most importantly who you want to be. Best of luck and follow your pursuit of fulfillment!
You are in fact young. I had a dream job too. I left and took a leap to advance my career and somehow ended up jobless for more than half of the last year. When you are down and out you will really appreciate what it means to have a job bcuz ive been at your stage too. Not understanding the point or wondering how people have the drive to work corporate for 40 years. Its because they have mouths to feed and they know the massive risk of starting your own business. You can lose so much of what you worked for so easily. The internships and schooling and years of work experience then left to not be able to find a job because you have a gap in your resume. People stay driven because sadly it is their only hope and yes you can fix your life back but its never that simple. Also the older you get the more you wont care so much that you have to work long hours because there are less things to do and you see friends less per year. It really just becomes about family and work. As you get older you will accept this. Just be sure to leave work at work once you decide to be done for the day and enjoy your life.
Matt, if I may say something. For some background, I was an ER RN and a travel nurse, making $90/hr at the age of 23. I'm only saying this so you understand that I have a concept of what it's like to make a lot of money. Working that job, I felt the same as you. I realized, I was not happy with my career and I was working 48-60 hrs/week. Just waking up, rinse and repeat. Yes it provided me a 6 figure job and I made more than 90% of people my age, yet it made me extremely depressed. I quit and went back to college for Finance where I am expected to graduate soon. I also then lost 6 figures in the stock market from options (stupid me lol) and was left with nothing after I left my career. This made me realize that money is not everything. I am happier with $1000 in my account than i was when I had $100,000. Life is about experiences and time is the rarest resource on earth. You can make an unlimited amount of money but your time here on earth is capped. After I realized this, I have learned to relax more. Take more time for myself. Realize that your happiness. Your well being. Is more important than any job. Idk how many hours you work, but maybe you need something that is 40 hours a week, rather than 60-70 (I'm assuming you work this much). Maybe you need a new setting in another state. I don't know, that is up to you to decide. Thank you for reading this comment.
I’ve honestly been watching your videos all day and this video really made me question alot. A quick rundown I’m a junior majoring in accounting. It seems crazy for me to say this but i’m second guessing my career options this late into my college career. Unfortunately i’m to deep into college, (being a junior) so i cannot switch my major. I did have an internship last summer but did not have a good experience unfortunately. I don’t know if it’s meant for me to sit in front of a computer for 13 hours a day being stressed, and being underpaid and undervalued ? With all that being said what kinds of careers does an accounting degree open the doors for ? Any other “business administration “ jobs I can get into that have a good work life balance ? Ultimate goal is to become an entrepreneur but shouldn’t that be everyone’s goal?
Most ppl won’t do entrepreneurship because they can’t tolerate the risk or don’t have the luxury of quitting a stable 9-5. If I had the answer to the perfect job with high pay, good wlb, low stress and interesting + impactful work, then I’d be rich beyond belief already. Life is full of trade offs, and everyone makes decisions either based on their own values or the values somebody else (parents, friends) prescribed for them. The best thing you can do for yourself is figure out what you really value, and then decide what path aligns to those values. Best of luck my guy.
Hi Matt, out of fear people I know will find this comment I am writing on a spare account 😂. I just wanted to say that as a senior in a very prestigious high school, all I have been taught from the beginning is to work as hard as possible. Whether that be attaining a high GPA, research papers, non-profits, sports, etc. It often has me focusing on "the next step." I constantly remind myself that this pressure and work is only temporary as life will be better in college, and then once I am a working adult - yet deep inside I do not wish to be a slave to a cooperation or someone else for the rest of my life. Life is precious and rare, I do not want to waste it not being able to enjoy the full extent of it. However, the problem is if I do not work then obviously I will not only be a social disappointment, but I will have to struggle through life on a day to day basis. It is very difficult to deal with this problem regarding work/school - life balance, and I feel as if it is not talked about enough! Thank you for posting this video!
Hey man, I’m impressed that you’re already so introspective as a high schooler - you’re already leagues ahead of where I was in highschool. Glad you resonated with the video, best of luck with wrapping up highschool!
It's okay you have a great jawline
Bro 😂
This is the best video you ever made Matt. Really appreciate it. Keep it up man.
Thanks Michael - means a lot to hear that
Always a firm believer of "this too shall pass" whether its good times or bad times. And disappointment arises when we cling too tightly to either.
Couldn’t agree more Sam

really enjoying your content. im in IB and thinking of switching to consulting, and your video resonated really strongly with the paralysis of choice i'm feeling lately too.
Thank you this video was amazing. Yesterday night I was panicking about what I need to do and if I'm behind compared to everyone. Knowing that others are in similar places shows I'm not alone. Thanks again.
Hey David, glad this video helped. You got this man 🙏
Really appreciated this video! The disillusionment of the "dream" post-grad job is so real and something my friend group often talks about. Also, loved this style of a personal opinion piece
Hey Sean! Glad you enjoyed this style of video as much as I did making it
Appreciate the honesty and transparency. I’m experiencing this myself (left IB and trying to get through this quarter life crisis now haha 😅). All the best on your journey and wishing you continued success with the channel
Thanks Ashley - best of luck with your journey as well
Hey Colette! I appreciate the kind words, and thanks for sharing your story. I’m glad to hear that you’ve found enjoyment in starting your own business!

Hey bro, definitely felt like that recently, hope you feel better soon 👍
great video matt. very thoughtful and well spoken
The money is alright, but the purpose of getting money for me is to achieve freedom and happiness, which is ironic since at the end of the day, money cancels out my time/freedom. really needed this video this morning. thank you
Thanks Kyle - glad you resonated with the video
This is a great video, I believe your introspection and perspective on suffering is spot on. Something I have found across my career is that you will suffer no matter what, so might as well suffer for your own project on your own terms. People get lost in the corporate ladder for prestige, but there is a reason most founders that sell their business are wealthier than the MD doing the deal. Love your videos man!
I appreciate it Jonas!!
Truly beautiful video ❤
My favorite video of yours. Thanks for the courage to be honest
I appreciate that. Gonna do my best to continue being genuine and honest in my content
Thank you a lot, for everything, Matt.

My 2 cents
This is where working for the greater good/community adds & also religion personally for me.😊
Nice video, greetings from Germany 👋🏾
Hey Matt! I’m in no position to give u advice, but I’d say just stick through it and believe
Take a Great Rest!
This resonates sm. Wish this had Chinese subtitles so I could share w my family and have them watch hahaha

Good video. But the background music is too loud. Thanks. toronto canada
