  • This is the final episode of Season 1 of The Vervet Forest: Orphan Rescue. On this episode - A Caracal (big wild cat) gets stuck in the Goliath troop enclosure and we have to tranquilize it to release it back into the wild. We receive a new orphan baby vervet monkey named Meghan. She joins Dumbo and Meghan and Dumbo get to join Sickbay troop and there are quite a few moments of tension. I give you an update on Janet and Lou in Skrow troop and Mr. Miyagi joins Engeltjie troop in the main enclosure and a mom bites a baby monkey.

    I loved the series. I'm an old career pediatric nurse working night shift in the NICU. My friends at work call me monkey momma. I watch Arroz Marisco and the Vervet Forest because I love seeing these lovely creatures healthy and free. Thank you Kyle and all your colleagues for all you do. I have four grandchildren and I want them to live in a world where there are still free primates. It's hard work, and you all are so patient and kind, well done. Fan forever, Nurse Carolyn ;)

    I would have to say, vervets have become one of my favorite breed of monkeys. My heart goes out to the cat though, my heart dropped when she fell out of the tree! I was happy she didn't eat any of the monkeys either. I was happy to see Groot to He has gotten so big! I love this series! I am also very impressed with the viewers comments, they have mad respect for you Kyle a.k.a (skillz) you all are very special people and the monkeys couldn't be happier!

    Maybe it’s just my devious human brain at work but when the caracal was getting carted out past the Camelot troop, their first alarm calls sounded like they were laughing at the cat. Kind of like a “Ha-ha-ha-ha......now get out of here you silly cat” type of laugh. Lol.

    An exciting end, to an epic season! I cannot begin to express what watching these videos, and learning about Vervet Monkeys, and the VMF, have done for me personally. Thank you doesn't come close to expressing my gratitude. To Dave and Josie, thank you for committing your lives to rescuing and rehabilitating each and every one of these precious animals. To the staff and volunteers, without your commitment and work, a foundation like this could not survive, let alone thrive, as it has, so thank you! To Kyle, your creativity, and knowledge in the film making industry, is what allows me to continue enjoying the everyday lives of these most amazing creatures, from over 12000 kms away. Your artistic ability, combined with your commitment to wildlife, and nature as a whole, is commendable. Lastly, to the Vervets, I love each and every one of you, am blessed to have been able to get to know you, and can't wait to see what is next for all of you.
    I plan to continue making efforts, to share the VMF'S story, and assisting in fundraising efforts, together, we can fulfill the dream of acquiring more property, for this foundation to grow! Cheers all, and Happy Travels!

    Y'all are so chill about everything! Dare I say even Zen? I know it can't be easy; especially when watching a little one learning a difficult, albeit necessary, lesson or simply experiencing anything stressful. I have to say, living in a country where people carry dogs in purses, intentionally breed cats with deformities "cuz they're just *so* darn cute," & where helicopter parenting has become the accepted norm, how you all deal with these situations is refreshing!

    I can just hear it now --- some snake finds it's way into the enclosure and the monkeys talk to the snake, "Shoot -- you think your bite is bad, well you don't know the worst bite of all -- the 'lectric fence bite -- go ahead and climb it". Poor babies who have to experience that. I hope all is well there in vervet land.

      coriolyn we actually had two snakes fighting on top of one of the intro enclosures once. It’s crazy the things those snakes get into. Next thing you know the monkeys will be fastening them into ropes to swing over the fences! Lol

    Oh my gosh, Groot with the dark little face, no more pink baby face 😍😍😍😍😍. Such a big handsome boy now, my heart can’t take his cuteness.
    Question for you, when the monkeys bite the babies is it more of a warning bite, like “look here kid” or do they/have they/will they seriously bite down and hurt the babies?
    Thank you for creating such an amazing series, thank you for all the amazing work you all do and I especially thank you for inspiring me to come volunteer with these amazing animals. Thank you thank you thank you ❤️🙏🏻🐒❤️🤓✌🏻

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jessica del Pielago Wait till you see how dark Groot has gotten now! Lol it’s unbelievable!
      All those bites you saw were warning bites. It’s very very very rare that a mom actually does real damage to a baby intentionally. I’ve only seen it happen once in several years and that was also a very unusual circumstance. But this is why we are careful about who is let into the intro enclosures.

    Wow you guys truly have your hands full. God Bless You All. When I seen the first video of you guys and these primates, I went straight to your page and literally started from the very first episode to episode 32 I believe was the highest you had at the time and watched every one of them until 5 in the morning I was addicted from the first video. Great job all of you. Just wish there were more videos put out in the week, but know just how much work you already have I understand that it's only possible for 1 a week. Look forward to seeing your next video.

      Awe thank you so much! I wish I could put out more episodes a week. It’s just exhausting, it’s literally me (Kyle) filming editing and narrating and coloring and doing sound work and all that stuff all by myself, id love to be able to put more stuff out constantly but I’d need more help, otherwise I end up going a little insane working endlessly with no breaks lol.

      He was just fine. Not too soon at all. He was just being a dick to the higher ranking female and she put him in his place. I know its intense to see but thats the life of a wild animal, they have very aggressive ways to assert authority... but so do we humans. No stitches needed, its very rare that a monkey needs stitches. They heal incredibly fast, just wait till you see the story about little Tylee.
      Plenty more videos will be coming. You can always donate using Paypal.me/vervet monthly donations help tremendously! Such a distance to drop full weight i would imagine such an impact without the normal perching between lengthy drops would cause blunt force trauma for vital organs and possibly bone fracturing spinal injuries and brain traumatic injury...is that why he was in a cage for vet to assess for injuries? Im always curious about such long falls even well equipped for such undertakings still in all unable to decrease impact by landing and grabbing along the way which is a conscious effort to decrease impact.

      Tamara Kennedy it sounded like his fall was broken by smaller branches and bushes

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tamara Kennedy, the fall wasn’t too bad and Brian is right, the fall was broken by plenty of small branches and bushes and he fell into the blankets that we had padded up at the bottom of the tree. He was perfectly fine. You gotta remeber, he’s a cat and can jump incredible heights, so a fall like that can and does happen in the wild. There was no injury to asses the cat was perfectly fine. We had to keep him in the cage so that the drugs could wear off completely before we released him, otherwise if we released him while he was still woozy it could have cause more serious problems.

    Kyle, Dave, volunteers, staff and I’m sure I’ve missed more than one. Thank you for your delightful part of the great videos of the Vervets. You have entertained me with the cute little babies and the things they get into. WOW! you have your hands full!.
    One thing that confuses me. Why did you allow the last batch go out without a surrogate??? I wouldn’t want to think , somebody was getting tired of the situation and just started letting them go. Not so?
    Hopefully they will fine somebody to show them the rope on the outside.
    Kyle you do such a great job informing me. ( even though I heard a very big sigh tonight.
    It must very frustrating and hectic, boy, God bless you all for the wonderful work you are doing for humanity.

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      linda hobbs Awe, thank you Linda. Some babies (especially the older ones and ex-pets) don’t ever bond with a mother. It’s late in the season, the mothers are no longer interested, the babies are older and not as keen on latching onto a mother and so it becomes unrealistic to wait for that situation. What we aim for instead is the baby to form a good bond with others in the troop so that when they go out there they have a family and friends to join. Because in the end this is most important. As the babies grow they eventually move away from their moms and become independent, so it’s okay that they go out on their own. Sometimes it’s just a little scarier because they have to learn troop life the hard way rather than having the protection of a mother. But either way it always works out!

    Thank you so much for all the great videos. It has been a lot of fun to observe
    how these little guys interact with each other.
    So are the females of the troop not interested in adopting the older Vervets?
    I thought Meghan looked like a young baby and she would have a chance
    for a female adult to adopt her.
    Since the young babies can not nurse from their adopted moms I would like to have seen
    how they discover the baby feeding enclosures. How many of them do you have out there for them.
    It would be nice to have a video showing the interaction of the Humans there at the
    Vervet foundation. Obviously you are the Alpha male in your group.
    Who is the Alpha female? hehe.
    Thank you again for all the fun.
    I am handicapped and I live most of my life in my recliner
    watching videos like yours. It is such a joy for me to see
    the young babies scamper around in the trees looking
    so full of wonder and a little anxiousness when they are released
    to the Goliath enclosure for the first time.
    I look forward to your next series.
    P.S.
    Sorry about the remark I made when you made the video wearing the Tie-Dyed shirt.

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill23799 Thanks! Lol never saw the comment on the tie died shirt so no worries.
      Yeah it’s harder for the older babies, they’ve already got such strongly developed personalities the moms often just aren’t interested cause they aren’t very interested in having a mom and being the clingy babies that the moms desire.
      Each troop has 3 or 4 feeding cages for the babies. The babies generally discover them at all different times, depending on how willing the moms are to let them go away and venture into a cage.
      I’ll definitely be putting out some more videos of the humans and the work that is done here. I’d say Dave (the founder and head honcho) is definitely the alpha male in the eyes of the monkeys, especially when he’s walking round with Timmy and his new pup George.
      But yes Torie is definitely the alpha female lol.

    What a way to wrap up the season! That Caracal is one beautiful wild cat...and yes, I can imagine he/she (?) was pretty much the very _opposite_ of happy at waking up in that cage. Fortunately, it did so in a place full of amazing human beings, so that adventure ended in the best possible way ❤️
    I can imagine that Dumbo is going to have a bit of a rough going for a bit... Out of curiosity, is the - for lack of a better word - "harassing" behavior of the juveniles something that happens along gendered lines? Meaning do the juvenile males pick on the even younger males, as they jockey for position within the pack? And, likewise, the females? Or is it pretty much just juveniles being indiscriminately assertive with whatever unguarded smaller monkey they come across, regardless of gender?
    Also, being a total LOTR nerd, I got a kick out of hearing that you all named one of the vervets "Legolas"...

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zentierra we also have a Boromir and a Gandalf and a Shmiegle (sp?)
      Dumbo is doing just fine. Eh, they’re pretty non descriminant. It’s more just rough housing and asserting dominance slowly finding their place in the troop. But Kofi it seems is and always has been a particularly pester happy little dude. Even as a baby they say he would drive the other monkeys crazy. It really comes down to the individual personalities.

    • @zentierra7803
      @zentierra7803 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah...so it was mostly a "Kofi" thing with Dumbo in the vid.

    Bye, babies! I'll miss hearing about them but I'm glad you're continuing the show! I've seen the babies bite each other but never the human handlers. I'm sure there's more than shown but I was surprised that escaped baby didn't try and bite Torie when she grabbed it. Is that typical? Are the babies not really aggressive toward humans?

    • @victoriacurrsmith9762

      It should be noted though that it’s very rarely aggressive bites and usually play or communicative - a way to say hey please don’t do that or I don’t like this. It generall doesn’t hurt too much unless they manage to get the skin between your fingers!

    @suzzie1311 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Caracal is beautiful they are amazing animals but of course, any cat that can jump over 9 ft and catch a bird mid-air has reason to be considered amazing very understandable that the monkeys would be alarmed, I am curious if in the offseason if you take in young injured juveniles also are there ever any that are unreleasable

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sharon grissom I agree, Caracals are incredible animals!
      Yup we take in injured monkeys constantly. Actually just had a very successful release yesterday back to a wild troop of a monkey who had been hit by a car. I’ll be putting out some episodes documenting that work in the coming weeks 😊
      And yes we also have some that are unreleasable, but generally those are ex pets. It’s very rare that an injured monkey doesn’t get released (especially if we know where the troop is). It’s in all our benefits to get that monkey back out to its family in the wild.
