  • Thanks for all your welcoming words! I hope that you will watch and enjoy my snippets of the macaque troops that include Golden Hill Road as part of their home ranges.
In the next few videos, walk with me up and down the road, see what I see as it unfolds. The perspective will be a bit different as the footage was taken with an action camera. No zoom. Very little wind noise. Also, no slow motion - well just a little bit. As its early afternoon, the monkeys are just starting to emerge from the forest for their afternoon rest, groom, bit of foraging, and socializing. Play time as well for the yearlings and juveniles. Later in the afternoon, excitement starts to build in anticipation of goodies to come. For now - its quiet. It's hard to imagine while in the beautiful, forested slopes of Kam Shan Country Park, that within walking distance is the very high density urban area of Hong Kong. The monkeys have adapted to human presence, the semi-provisioning of food, and encroachment into their home. They are surviving and thriving. Unlike their shy and elusive cousins, the Southern pig-tailed macaques that avoid humans and are highly sensitive to anthropogenic/human activities in their natural habitat.
Please ignore the date stamps - they are not correct!
You may have noticed that I am partial to slow motion. This relates to my background using slow motion frame by frame video analysis of movement. Slow motion helps capture subtleties in movement, as well as behaviour, that may not be noticed all at once in real time. This interests me, and perhaps viewers may find this interesting as well. Plus I find it relaxing to watch the monkeys walk in slow motion!

GEM, thank you very much for explaining us the monkey's behaviour. Toni is such a beautiful girl, isn't she?

Yes she is , with her dark chocolate cheek hair and expressive eyes. She was a bit nervous with me sitting on the road close to her, but Mum was keeping an eye on things, peering over Toni's head. There were a number of adults and juveniles with this distinctive dark facial and forearm colouring.

Just wanted to give my feedback about this channel. Not that my opinion should in no way sway anyone else's decision. I have watched all the videos and read all the comments so far on each of them. The content is great. I really like your prospective GEM. I love learning more about the monkeys ways and life through this channel. Very informative. I of course love AM, JW and MC's channels and their content as well. But this perspective is different in that it isn't just about the babies. This one shows a lot about the adult monkeys and their behaviors. The slow motion thing is not something I am fond of but I do understand why you like it. For me, I watch on a desktop computer so I can slow the video down or speed it up. Whichever I prefer so the slow motion doesn't effect the way I view it. I look forward to more of your insight into these fabulous creatures. I just love and adore these monkeys.

The monkeys are definitely more relaxed in the afternoon. Also, by not feeding them, and sitting with them, they don't have a food expectation and carry on with their afternoon activities.

Love the insight that you give us!! 💗 Much love for sharing these videos with us all. Do you visit this particular troop often? They seem so comfortable with you, especially Primrose who just waltzed right on up lol

I've spent a lot of time just sitting with monkeys in the wild - observing and understanding their behaviour cues, and using their cues to direct my behaviour so that I don't become a stressor to them. In other words - act like them and respect their space. I was sitting on the road with the monkeys around me. Of course I'd love to think that sweet Primrose was running up to say hello to me but mum and sister were sitting behind me and she was coming to them! She certainly was curious about me though. I hope her boldness doesn't carry over to handouts from casual feeders, especially those handing out food from moving cars, with potential for accidents. As a blondie, this draws attention to her.

How sad that they would sterilize a juvenile. 😢

This was 6 years ago. Before they were spoiled during Covid. It’s good they only get snacks twice a week now. It’s sad they demand it now and cry and scream for goodies

That date is definitely wrong. Primrose was born in 2022 so this had to have been recorded last year.

Definitely not 6 yrs ago. Primrose is at least 18 mos old here. Probably filmed this year. 🐒😎
