Here's the thing: considering that Alvina in the first game knows that the myth of Artorias is made up (even though she still protect his burial ground), it could be a hint that cats in the series are a symbol of knowledge, wisdom and neutrality (iir, Alvina's covenant is considered True Neutral). That would explain why Shalquoir is not affected by the curse and yet she doesn't do much to help the world and its inhabitants outside of selling you stuff and giving you a prize for defeating rats. Now, where and how cats in the Dark Soulsverse gained superpowers is another story.
Most likely she is the reincarnation of Alvina, but let's go to anagrams for random insight: *Sweet Shalquoir* = Tequila Showers, Quiet as howlers, Weather Qi Souls, Show it squealer, Slow Squire Hate
Hell yeah, Finished Dark souls II too with all achievements. Now I can enjoy your lore videos again just like the ones about original Dark Souls. Thank you, you're amazing!
No the dude who through himself into the fire and became ichorous earth is the old iron king. The old iron king met gwyn in the fire (molten iron/lava) and became ichorous earth.
***** "Whether she's talking of the Lost Sinner who attempted to light the first flame, or the Rotten, Shalquoir's tone remains indifferent, aloof. To her, watching humans seems to be nothing more than an amusement." Contextually, I think it makes more sense. In the video I perhaps just didn't leave enough of a gap between that and the last paragraph.
Hi Alex! I was thinking, is that possible that the human race became the closest to break the curse cycle when they discovered the petrification? A petrified human is like the dragons of old: neither living nor dead, they exist outside the cycle, and it is also strange that in DS1 they said that the dragons had stone scales as well. Also it seems that Aldia also experimented with the process, maybe for the same reason...
Shroom Mush Ichorous means "an ethereal fluid flowing in the veins of the gods." which in that case would make sense that the Old Iron King would have the power of a god coursing through his veins.
just add some poison arrows and the poison mist and toxic mist, a poison ricards rapier and ice rapier and you got yourself a hate mail build, probably....add some hexes as well and dont forget the main part.....Katanas.....manslayer at best 2 of them (and mmmm hexes got to be my favourite thing...gets me closer to the dark)

Technically a Bake Neko is not "changed cat", it literally means "monster cat". The word for monster in japanese is "Bakemono" (along with other breeds of monsters/creatures such as "Obake" meaning Goblin), essentially the point here is that the prefix "Bake" means monster. And as i'm sure you're aware, the word "Neko" means cat, so Bake Neko means Monster Cat.
xXDarkxIdealsXx Japanese mythology isn't my strong point haha, but as far as I understood it, the "changed cat" had something to do with it changing from a cat into a monster/demon or something like that. So... changing from a "neko" to a "bakeneko" perhaps? Iunno. 化け猫 translates into "Cat monster"
At 2:33 she speaks of the Old Iron King. He threw himself into the lava and became the demon we fight at the end of Iron Keep. She says he became "Ichorous Earth". This was the same term from the old description of the Old Iron King's Soul.
QUESTION: In Dks1, Black Iron Tarkus' armor is in the building with the painting that leads to the painted world, does anyone have any thought about why Tarkus' armor is there? I assume he was walking along the beams and fell (maybe he broke the window???). Or maybe the painting guardian that drops on you was the one that knocked him off.
Shalquoir explains the presence of the Royal Rat Authority. Being a cat, she probably eats mice. And according to the basic rule of Tom & Jerry, the only thing that can chase away a cat who wants to eat a mouse is a dog. So there you have it.
It seems like ALL cats are supernatural beings in the Dark Souls universe, but I guess we've only seen two, so they could very easily be stand-outs and outliers of their race. Somehow Ascended beings, maybe? Also this was pretty adorable. The choice to use real cats was a good one. I hope the Scholar update and eventual new version of the game give you plenty of new stuff to talk about.
Slicerness We've seen Alvina and Shalquoir, and a few "cat-enemies" who are pretty out of the way in the first game, but probably associated with Alvina as they look rather like her.
I got so preoccupied in watching the cats on this video that I didn't understand most of what you said. Now I have to watch this video the second time.
The Ancients kept cats because they hunted and killed Snakes, Rats, and other vermin that might have a negative effect of developing Human Society. Different religions have even seen Felines as Divine entities or messengers, perhaps inspiration was drawn from a certain Egyptian Goddess?
To me I always thought the way shalquoir says something along the lines of "Is this a good time to be chatting with a cat" suggested that shalquoir wasn't actually the cat. I always thought there was just a cat sitting there that we just presumed was the one talking to us and that we were actually just talking to a spirit or a god. Like velka.
Bubble Pop Some people thought similar of Elizabeth in the AotA DLC - that she wasn't really a mushroom, but just using it as a sort of disguise or something.
Everlasting cats taking over the world. That would be a plot-twist i wouldn't see coming, but i wouldplay that game everyday :). p.s. Cool video :) keep up the good work
Cats in fairytales and lore have been known as spirits who take that shape to give guidance to their masters, royalty, and other people. They have power of illusions and can change perspective. A novel that has such a character is Terry Brooks the Black Unicorn. Where the cat in the story gives the kind advice and teaches him how to overcome illusion. It could be that the reason the player can't hurt her is because she is never really there, she could be a mere image of what she wishes to show herself as, she could be there to guide the player. Then when the players final challenge is done she simply goes away. Since she isn't needed.
What happened to the giant talking snakes? I was half expecting them to pop up at the end once you go into the kiln its door looks very similar to the door behind the lord vessel in DS one.
Silver Mont The statues that tekeport you to the DLC's each have the head of a serpent cut off. Perhaps this is related to them... or It says in the dark set they are foreign legends. Both Frampt and kaathe say "i am the primordial serpent. My personal theory is that they are more linked to a hydra than dragons because at dark lord ending there are roughly 8 or so heads bowing to you, a very close number to the heads on a hydra. Perhaps they are only in what used to be lordran anyways?
2:34 wait, wasn't "icarus earth" a thing that wasn't in the original dialogue? if i remember right, i don't think it appears anywhere in the japanese version of the game.
***** Ichorous Earth, yeah. As for being in the Japanese version, I'm afraid I can't say as I don't speak Japanese. As I understand though, there are some strange translation quirks.
i don't think she's one of the cat-spirits (i can't recall their name off the top of my head) mostly because those spirits are pretty malicious. Shalquoir is more indifferent or vaguely amused. I think she's something else.
I fucking love this cat. Something about that voice, that demeanor and that fluffy tail. Shalquoir is among the only reasons I still play Dark Souls 2, as I feel Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne are superior games.
Yamishi Ikeda Dark Souls II has its fair share of issues, but I do think it has its charms, too. I would say that Bloodborne is a higher quality game, but I've played DaS2 a hell of a lot more.
Well, I know a bit about Japanese monsters. Japanese culture and history has fascinated me since I was very young. Though admittedly, I'm much more well-versed in Greek myth. If you'd like to know anything, I may have an answer.
Ezio Blazes It That seems to be the implication, yeah - Ichorous Earth is what became of the Old Iron King after he sunk into the lava and came into contact with "something." (Probably related with Gwyn, seeing as he has part of his soul in NG+)
Shalquoir is referencing The Old Iron King, as per Item lores about him (he became ichorous earth). After losing his friend Alonne, and making the (blue) smelter demon with Alonnes soul, unable to slay it after understanding what he have done, threw himself into the lava, right before Nadia the ash maiden came to accrue his power. Something along those lines, vaati has a video about that.
FacelessEnemy Uh... huh? The Blue Smelter Demon has nothing to do with Alonne, who left prior to the Iron King's death. And he didn't "throw himself" into the lava, the game outright tells us that the Smelter Demon killed him. "The Old Iron King's life was taken by a mass of iron that had been given a soul. The earth spouted fire, and a beast arose from the flames. The short-sighted king was incinerated by the creature in one swing, and his castle devoured in a sea of flames."
I c, but there is other lore that says otherwize, cant remember them right now, but the smelter demon has been crossed to be alonnes soul used. The old iron king has alonnes armour in memory of him, after alonne left the old iron king hunted him down, as seen in the memory of the old iron king, u relive that moment. Smelter demon has a swordbuff wich he performs seppuku, sword through stomach and shares some moves(jump attack) same as alonne does. Its just lore theory, but i chose to believe in that one, though i agree if the smelter demon killed him or if he jumped into lava is just picking what u think according to the lore you may find in dks2.
FacelessEnemy I'm positive that there is nothing in-game which suggests any sort of link between Alonne and the Smelter Demon - I've researched that topic quite thoroughly, as I've got a video all about Brume Tower / Alonne / OIK. Of course, you are free to believe whatever you want, as is kinda the point in these games. You just have to be careful not to spread misinformation and make sure you distinguish between fact and theory, etc.
theDUDE35744 That makes the most sense to me, especially because she says that he's now Ichorous Earth which is supposedly what became of the Old Iron King. Also, in NG+, the Old Iron King drops the Old King soul that is able to be traded for Blinding Bolt, a spell created by the "God of Sun" in the item description.
Its a nod to the cthlulu mythos. Cats are seen to be all knowing and other worldly beings. Mostly seen in the unknown dream quest. they are closely tied to nathyrlotyp the wandering chaos
Unrelated questions: how long exactly do you think the war with the giants lasted? How long do you think Vendrick has been in the undead crypt? I think it was 200 years. Curious to know what you think as there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of hints in game except for, it (the war ) seemed like it would go on forever
Hmm... that's a really hard question to answer! We know Straid was petrified in one kingdom and woke up in another. But he makes a point of just saying "long enough..." in essence haha. But yeah, Velstadt has been in the crypt "long enough" to be corrupted by the dark, in the sense that it has seeped into his miracles and equipment.
@@SilverMont I’m thinking at least 150 years, drummond’s grandfather fought in the war, then his father and Drummond himself looks to be at least 50-60. Plus vendrick is completely hollow
Silver Mont Just killed all 4 and them those new dialogues trigger. True! Also, from what i've read you have to talk to her just after killing all 4 and before getting the ash midst.
"A vainglorious lier that hurled himself into the flame". Doesn't that sound more like Gwyn? (Several of her other dialogues also seem to point out at the "original" Lords.)
+Mert Erten It could be make for a Q&A! I don't think there's enough there for a "proper" lore video though. I'll def add it to the list though, I think that could make for some fun speculation!
I think they're not only quite similar, but like you said, Shalquoir knows a peculiar amount of the past. She however, never comes right out and says the names Gwyn, witch of Izalith, Nito, or anyone from DS1 really. This could mean she's just a descendant of Alvina; personally i think she's a reincarnation. Like you mentioned, the item description of the Silvercat ring points that Shalquoir could very well be the reincarnation of Alvina. But i think you might have missed something... The ring says, "they are reborn as something new." Shalquoir in one of her dialogues says, "Everything will crumble and waste away so something new may be born, isn't it wonderful?" She seems to know quite alot about that sort of thing, and maybe even quite fond of it, unless of course she was being sarcastic. So if she knows so much about new eras, and has seen things be reborn, then to me she must be immortal through the art of rebirth. Also need i mention that you can't kill Alvina nor can you Shalquoir. Although seemingly it is possible to kill Alvina, but i think the only reason it seems you can is because FromSoft would rather have her teleport away, than for her to just have unlimited health; she hates the sight of traitors afterall. Let's just say it's well, because she's a cat.
***** It seems that some creatures (such as Shalquoir) are not too bothered by the curse, which ultimately only really seems to be an issue to humanoids. I'm expecting Dark Souls III to have some really weird ending. Like, I dunno, most of the game is you building up a powerful soul and then using it to empower some sort of freaky ass time travel so you can go back in time and kill Gwyn. That's if the third game focuses on finally "ending" the curse once and for all. Only real way I see that happening at this point is to stop people from ever claiming souls in the first place.
Silver Mont something that bother me is that other animals could be undead rats, dogs, pigs yet we never saw any cats rotting, in ds1 the only ennemy cats seems pretty lively and they don't respawn too so maybe they can't be undead but will comeback nonetheless but in a new form. Or maybe they can't hollow because they are lazy animals that are cool to just live even without purpose(something humans can't, at least not easily).
Can't remember which myth I got this from but couldn't she be a being that's everywhere and nowhere? Her state prevents any harm from happening to her but she can't harm others either? Wait I got that from helsing ultimate with the cat boy so maybe that doesn't actually exist in mythology lol
But where does she store all her shop items? IN HER CAT POCKETS?
And what does she do with all the souls she gains? Buy Armor from Maughlin??
Lakanus Is she making a cat army? I think we discovered the plot of Dark Souls 3... maybe bloodborne
***** Yeah shell be the end boss of Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3!
Lakanus GOTY
Cats are good at hiding things away. When you aren't in Majula, she's hiding her treasures.
Here's the thing: considering that Alvina in the first game knows that the myth of Artorias is made up (even though she still protect his burial ground), it could be a hint that cats in the series are a symbol of knowledge, wisdom and neutrality (iir, Alvina's covenant is considered True Neutral).
FacelessEnemy
I'm positive that there is nothing in-game which suggests any sort of link between Alonne and the Smelter Demon - I've researched that topic quite thoroughly, as I've got a video all about Brume Tower / Alonne / OIK.
Of course, you are free to believe whatever you want, as is kinda the point in these games. You just have to be careful not to spread misinformation and make sure you distinguish between fact and theory, etc.
cute kitty
Isn't the fool who threw himself into the fire Gwyn?
David Dhooghe Quite possibly!
I love that the story isn't just given to us and that each one of us has to puzzle it out for ourselves.
David Dhooghe She probably refer to both Gwyn and the old iron king at the same time.
theDUDE35744 That makes the most sense to me, especially because she says that he's now Ichorous Earth which is supposedly what became of the Old Iron King.
The guy how helld himself into the flames is the old iron king
+RulerOfTheNight Gaming Yup
It's such a kitty!
Favorite video of all time. Why some people might ask? Because it involves cats.
How do you trigger those? All she says to me is about covenants, the guy in the sea and and victor stone, and about searching the old ones.
Julian Scherer Which dialogue, in particular?
The dialogues about each old one.
Julian Scherer I'm not sure what exactly triggers it, but when I spoke to her recently (having killed all of them) she had the dialogue.
Silver Mont Just killed all 4 and them those new dialogues trigger. True! Also, from what i've read you have to talk to her just after killing all 4 and before getting the ash midst.
"Hello every Nyan..."
"A vainglorious lier that hurled himself into the flame".
Doesn't that sound more like Gwyn?
(Several of her other dialogues also seem to point out at the "original" Lords.)
He Alex, i know dks3 is about to get released but can you make a lore video about the gods in the engraved ring? Would be really happy to see ^^
+Mert Erten It could be make for a Q&A! I don't think there's enough there for a "proper" lore video though. I'll def add it to the list though, I think that could make for some fun speculation!
Silver Mont haha thanks for taking the time to reply. love your vids
Great video as always, btw
Or maybe they can't hollow because they are lazy animals that are cool to just live even without purpose(something humans can't, at least not easily).
omg its the iron king dlc i think.the cat was talking about the king killing his self in lava
"Ichorous Earth" is the Old Iron King in his dragon-demon-thing form
+Nep Nep I know, check the comments
Silver Mont Just thought I'd remind you, lol
i hope there will be a cat in the next darksouls 3 like her, she is such a funny character :D and a cute little kitty :3
Rausche Pauli Hmm... well, we have Alvina and then Shalquoir, I think there's a decent chance we could get another!
You should do Sir Yorgh and his blood knights or something to that affect
Dakota loftin I have a video on Shulva coming up soon! So that'll cover the ol' Drakebloods.
finding this much about shalquoir has a CATch
shalquoir is ciarin using a silver talisman and health hacks confirmed
Invincible talking cats? You mean all the fucking cats in the world!?
Came for the lore, stayed for the cats
I always thought that the fire keeper was talking about the blood covenant guy, rather than shalquoir
Vampire Man Titchy Gren? Good point, although he doesn't really do much for us other than be a freaky violent gnome.
Can't remember which myth I got this from but couldn't she be a being that's everywhere and nowhere? Her state prevents any harm from happening to her but she can't harm others either? Wait I got that from helsing ultimate with the cat boy so maybe that doesn't actually exist in mythology lol
john gun Schrödinger's cat? More of a physics theory/experiment, than a myth, but I can see where you be coming from with that.
Oh i thougt that thing in the ruins is that useless woman in forest of fallen giant
Nice cats man! (:
no reference to the cat in dark souls 1?
nice cats
I personally like to believe she may be another Life apart From Alvina's. Same Cat, different Life.
And then kira was like stray cat is too strong
She is adorable and a brat at times . On of my favorite NPCs to interact with indeed.
