Quality workmanship. Really good tips about making cheap and perfectly good rubbing blocks. Re. the rear tailgate vents- If you google image the standard rear 'diffuser' on an Astra H VXR you'll see the fake vents that are just a plastic mesh look insert. Something like that might work quite well? Definitely agree that cutting out would lead to rust/condensation issues. Top video once again. Can’t wait to see some paintwork!
First person I’ve ever seen actually making the body kit fit and look good. It’s exactly what I would do given the opportunity. Will look so nice with decent fitting panels.
Hi John. Agree with most of what you've got in this video. Great content. I used to build yachts and every week for a time I used to bond in a bow thruster tuber in the front of the bow. Overlaps over cracks. My advice would be to make the bevels from both sides of a crack, as long as you can. We used to grind the outside of the hull 100mm from the crack. Also the rear vents. In the 80s 90s there was a textured automotive tape called bumper tape. I think it would be a period type of product that would sit nicely in the vent. We used bumper tape glass, fibreglass, aluminium. It was brilliant. It used to be used by car manufacturers on blacked out door pillars, think Audi Quattro, XR2, XR3, Metro Turbo etc. So it would really sit well on your build. Cheers Jamie
I know the product you’re thinking of, this car has it on the pilars. I wouldn’t have went as much as 100mm, maybe 60-70mm or so, but I don’t see it getting much abuse once it’s bonded to the metal frame of the tailgate. Plus it’s done both inside and out
Thanks, I wasn’t sure whether people would want so much of that or not. Sometimes I think if you don’t explain your reasoning for doing something, it inevitably leads to people questioning your decision making, or wondering why something was done way rather than another
Still a bit of finishing work to get it perfect, I wanted to get further in the video, but I figured out I need to paint the inside of the bootlid before I can bond it,… and that will take a day or 2
Excellent as expected, love the detailed explanation about fillers and glazes…. Smooth progress “pun intended” looking forward to the next one John ❤️✊👍
Thanks, I thought it was maybe too detailed, but that’s how it ended up. Only so many types of videos you can make with a project like this and they won’t all be cutting great big whacks out of it
Great progress, the only additional step I have in jointing fiberglass end to end, or patching, is when you have completed all the grinding steps as you had, I then use a thin metal cutting disc on a grinder to put cuts circa 1" apart for a total length of approximately 4", this then lets the mat and resin fully integrate with both panels so it is less sat on each side and more worked through. I find that for pieces under stress, they are then less likely to split. Keep up the great work, always good to see a new update.
That’s a good idea, although I did take good care to sand it with the DA/grinder and had a go at other parts with 40 grit by hand…. I didn’t include that in the filming. I don’t think any of these parts are really stressed anyway, cosmetic more so once the tailgate skin is glued on. But il keep it in mind for the front end
Loving the progress! Regarding the holes/vents in the tailgate if it was mine I'd paint the entire tailgate the body colour then get someone (a sign writer or a mate with a plotter cutter, you'll just need to make a DXF file in sketch up) to cut some inserts out of matt black vinyl, you'll get a lovely crisp edge.
Excellent progress on the body kit. I would cut out the vents and put mesh over the back and fiberglass over the back of that then paint them, if that makes sense. Love this project thank you. 👍
Nice finish. I recon make the tailgate recesses black first. If you don't like that, then try any of the other options you mentioned. Don't cut until you know you want to.
Clear perspex fitted to the tailgate bonded from the inside, then mesh behind that so it keeps clean and looks right, then when washing craps not getting stuck in between mesh and the perspex
Fantastic project love watching the progress. For the tailgate vents, the final colour scheme could really help. Something like the Silkolene livery being black over the tailgate actually masks that vent area detail and if that just had black mesh would hide that its not open I think.
Great to see the progress you have made on this, could you paint the parts that normally show the engine black then glue a tightly fitted piece of mesh over it so water ingress isn't a problem.
Looking amazing. On the fuel fillers, i would delete completely rather than fake them and just have the one up front. For the rear vents, have you thought about creating a larger recessed area to locate the rear numberplate. The normal 6r4 location doesn't look possible because of the gearbox sticking out. 😎
Personally i would paint the inserts black then try and find some mesh like Peugeot used on the sides of the 405 T16 which is very similar to what they used on the SP sport pack kits for 206s and 307s, its a very nice thick mesh. Worth a look at them to see what i am getting at. Then put that over the recess from the outside.
Could you ‘fake’ the rear vents with appropriate black vinyl? Or mesh pattern vinyl? The auto test guys use stick on head lamps so a stick on vent wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.
Loving the build mate. If you arent going for a full replica you could cut the holes in the boot then add mesh. Build a fibreglass box and then fit extra brake lights in there so when you brake the holes in the mesh light up. If going replica cut them mesh them and ad a peice of polycarbonate om the back so it seals it off but has the illusion of going somwhere
Will look good with tail lights fitted and cut out the vents make a mesh with black steel or carbon pannel behind that can be removed/slide up for cleaning, very cool that you can see more of the diff gearbox cover now could paint it a accent colour or black with the high spots ground back to exposed steel clear coated
Spot on pal, another great video. Good to see it coming along. Regarding the tailgate vents, I would just spray the inner black or maybe use some vinyl?
Thanks for the bodywork tips John, really helpful advice! Regarding the slots, I'd paint them matt black, maybe recess them a bit more so you have a shadow effect, but leave the bottom lip at an angle so any water runs off externally?
With regards to the tailgate vents, I'd just paint them black. But if you want them to at least have the impression of being grilled vents, you could paint them a charcoal grey, then stick some "mesh sunshade window sticker" over that. The sunshade window sticker stuff is just a roll of clear vinyl that's printed to look a bit like perforated metal plate. It's meant to mimic the grid/dot pattern around the edge of a modern cars windscreen, but I do think it looks more like black perf plate. Worth looking at, even if you reject the idea (it's always good to be aware of what random products are out there in case it turns out to be the ideal solution for some future project).
You’re doing some great stuff there. Might I just question one thing? I don’t think the most interesting thing about the 6R4 is the body kit… Looking forward to seeing your roll cage. Cheers.
Great content as usual, your channel is turning into a favourite of mine. Would you ever consider building a few of these to order for customers? Id say you might get a bit of interest depending on costs/ affordability . Id love one finished off similar to the standard white finish clubman spec cars
I don’t know, it’s a possibility I guess, I’d do anything if it paid enough, but I do have another project in mind/in line after this for the channel,… if people continue wanting to see stuff.
Looking forward to seeing the car when finished and your next project. Your channel will go from strength to strength and gain alot more followers in the future 😊👍

Black vinyl on the tailgate ‘vents’ …. Could possibly still pit a mesh over the top of it to give the illusion. Is this going to be a Road car? How does that stand with the v5?
Either Iva test it or do the same as everyone else building a metro 6r4, or various other professional company’s building similar efforts, like Retropower (I assume) and say nothing. Either are considered ‘radically modified’ by the dvla, but this was covered in the first episode. It will be built to IVA standard.
I'd leave the slots sealed up. The hassle of cleaning them isn't worth entertaining. Maybe you could paint them black and spray a mesh effect over the top of it, or 3d print an insert with a mesh texture built into it.
This for sure isn't your first time doing body work! Nice job, it's going to be a dead giveaway that it's a replica, as it'll have straight panels and fit together properly. Put some black vinyl in the recesses. Job done. Certainly wouldn't cut them out, as you may even end up drawing exhaust fumes into the car.
I’d be more comfortable with this work than the rest of it to be fair. I seen a guy has made a set of 3-d printed inserts, and that might be a solution
Love how this is coming on.
This & Jonny Smith's Alegro are my most anticipated builds!
Tailgate vents: how about painting the slots black then installing mesh on top so that they look like they vent the engine bay but can't let in water?
Came here to say the same.
I can try it first and see before I cut it out
@@pedenconceptzI'm doing this approach on a car I'm building, so could provide an example if you don't get there first 🙃.
