I don't think Mitch was as confident when they got on this show, Mitch missed his High School graduation for the show, but Scott and Kirsten were already in college. Kirsten was studying musical theater and Scott was competing at the college level chorus. He gains confidence as they continue this journey. His father has stated often how shy Mitch was about his singing and how he would even hide behind the fireplace to even sing for them at home. Thank God he has overcome that.
All of this. Mitch was young (just 19), very shy and nervous about singing leads. He was teased about his voice in high school - because kids are cruel - It took him at least a couple years to be the confident singer we are more familiar with today. His talent was always there, his confidence not so much. Kirstie too, to some degree. Both of them were more comfortable sharing the spotlight than taking it all up themselves.
Hopefully people can appreciate your HONESTY and be here for it like I am 🤷♀️ I'm over 40yrs old and an unashamed Pentaholic and I genuinely appreciate your insight and view based on your experience and talent that I don't have and never will have 🏆
Even some of us old folks (I am 60+) are Pentaholics. :o) I like reactors who have a music background and can make informed comments. The "I liked the song and Kirstie is so pretty and boy can Mitch sing high." from many of the reactors is not my cup of tea. My favorite judge is Ben Folds. He often gives very good technical criticism.
I understand your point. Mitch however was not confident in himself at this point. Infact, his dad talked about how scared and stressed out he was and wanting to quit but look how far our boy has come.
Thanks for your reaction. I really like this performance. I never thought about what it'd sound like with Mitch taking the lead on this. That would be interesting to hear. Avi and Kevin killed it the whole competition.
Here we go. This is one of their most popular sing-off performances! Interesting thoughts. If they did that song today they might have considered that. Back then they were still trying to find their voices as a group. You'll notice Scott will carry the lead in almost every song. This is well before Mitch blossomed into the star we know him as today but he does have his moments.
7:45 Avi has admitted that he had a huge crush on Sarah during the show. He has this same expression on his face every time she compliments him. It's adorable.
Loving your honesty, Huge Pentaholic here but not my favorite from the Sing Off. I love seeing how close they became during this time. I can't wait for you to get to Born to be wild, Let's Get it on and Dog days are over. Their talent on these songs are amazing!!!
Their Sing Off performance of “Let’s Get It On” and “Dog Days” are the best, I still rewatch them. Lol These other songs are good just to see how far they’ve come🤩
Great reaction. I can't wait to see you react to Dog Days. So awesome. You are almost ready to see the Ah Ha live at the Star Vista fan video. But wait until you are done with the Sing Off ones so you can appreciate that one even more.
Please continue with your reactions. Look forward to your insightful views as you go on this journey. I love Mitch’s pure voice and would love to have him take the lead all the time !
👋😃 I LOVE that Scott lead the song. Scott came to this show with a bit more confidence. 👉Mitch has stated repeatedly that he was ALWAYS very anxious and nervous and at times wanted to quit. 👏Scott has helped him a lot by encouraging him and with believing o In himself, esp during this show. 👉👉But keep in mind that they were all quite young. Scott Kirstie and Mitch were 19, Avi was 21 and K.O was 22...This was REALLY big for them.. To date Mitch says that he still gets nervous but has come a long way...
I’m 2 years late on saying this, but I just want to thank you for how respectfully you deliver your opinions. When you deliver criticism, you don’t do it in order to disparage or belittle. Your criticisms beautifully align with the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary definition: criticism is “the work or activity of making fair, careful judgements about the good and bad qualities of somebody/something, especially books, music, etc.” Fair and respectful criticism is so rare, but you have it mastered. 😊
Not too many people honestly would call this their favorite performance, it's moreso that this was the point where they started to find their style that would eventually become what we would know from them for years, they definitely have better performances but this is where their style started to form.
I've always maintained that it's not so much the quality of performance as it is the moment in the series where they began to discover their identity as a band. The next performance is when they REALLY step up their game. Great reaction.
In addition to what the others have said about Mitch’s confidence, I think the producers preferred a defined lead singer. And that, more or less, is Scott. He had the most confidence and ambition; he put the group together. But you will see Mitch (and Kirstie) shine.
Makes sense, I'm almost ready to stop doing these, apparently i'm offending people( not you) by saying I feel like Mitch's voice would sound better singing lead on THAT particular song. I love every member. But honestly this starting get a little ridiculous
Official DramaSydE dont stop. Ur opinion makes sense. And mitch wouldve nailed it too...but the confidence thing was a thing. Also the main three were 19 in this. I dont know. But yeah dont stop. I think were just defensive of this performance cuz it was such a big turning point in the competition for them as a group.
That would be sad...I very much appreciate your perspective. I’m a non-musician and started watching reactions to see what others thought of this music that I liked specifically so I could learn from people who knew more about music. And while there are a lot of former choir people and vocal coaches out there, none of them have the industry perspective you do. It amazes me how people choose a favorite group member and elevate them above the group. All 6 PTX members are remarkably ego-free in terms of arrangements and support of each other. They appreciate each other’s talents and really work to make sure that everyone gets the spotlight. (Though the sing-off was less balanced in that regard for reasons already discussed.)
Official DramaSydE oh please don’t stop doing these. There’s so many more to go and I really enjoy hearing what you have to say. Plus if you don’t do the rest how will you see Mitch get his moment where he really shined? It’s the performance that I fell in love with his voice. He’s my favorite so of course I don’t mind hearing you say you would’ve liked to hear him sing the lead. I will warn you that their performance of Without You is not good. They couldn’t hear themselves and took awhile for them to find the right key. Plus that song pretty much lacks a good melody to sing. They’re too good to sing a song that monotone and it shows.
@@DramaSydETV I honestly don't think anyone is offended by your saying that, just explaining why it didn't/couldn't happen! 'LOVE your honesty! Please keep doing these. Love going on the journey of discovery with you and The Sing Off is an important part of who they are. You are right about missing the other half of the equation in not seeing the other contestants. I am one of those who first discovered them thru this show. There were other groups that were good, but Pentatonix was doing it different. One of the things that amazed me was how 'full' and loud they sounded with only the five of them, often sounding much fuller than groups three and four times their size. Part of that was Kevin and Avi but another part was that the other three could and did fully commit to their parts, singing loud and proud where other singers in other groups sometimes held back. Oh, and be sure to listen for Avi's polyphonic singing on some of their songs here. It's subtle and none of the judges ever seemed to pick up on it but it was key to their 'synth' sound. Again, do you and don't worry about what others think of that! We want honest reactions. Thanks for doing these!
Check out the Dartmouth Aires' 6th performance "Queen Medley" (IMO their best one) & Urban Method's 2nd performance of "Can't Get Enough" just to get an idea of the runner-ups to PTX . As far as Mitch(He was very shy) doing lead vocals, the original trio of Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch always had Scott as the lead. Mitch had the natural ability to go between head and chest voice and his confidence grew more as the show went on and PTX jelled into a tight knit force. And I'm not at all offended by your comments because i believe everybody is entitled to their own opinion/interpretation and totally value yours. I did "subscribe to imbibe" the reactions, so carry on sir!
Actually, I preferred Urban Method’s “Poison” from this same episode (Guilty Pleasures Week), but I am not too familiar with contemporary music so I couldn’t fairly judge the song you selected. They had a lot of fun with Poison and featured the right singers (I hated how they kept trying to push the girls to the forefront, since they didn’t have the same stage presence as the guys did).
I'm so grateful that the judges overlooked some of the flaws we see (now, in hindsight) in their performances to give us a chance to experience greatness. I try to always remember that all of them were so very young and all so new to one another - they had to rely on their raw talent without the benefit of shared experience and before they really developed a comfort level among themselves. Thanks DS for a measured, honest critique - personally I have trouble going back to any of the Sing Off numbers after seeing what they have ultimately become.
If you want to fall down the rabbit hole, all of the performances from all of the groups are available here on TH-cam--MrDuckBear11 (the patron saint of Pentatonix reactors) recorded all of the performances of "The Sing-Off". Some of the other groups competing had several really good performances; check out Afro-Blue's versions of "American Boy" or "I Heard it Though the Grapevine", Vocal Point's Elvis Medley, or The Yellowjackets and their take of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You". A couple of the other groups in the third season have very dynamic stage presences (in particular, the larger collegiate groups such as the Yellowjackets and the Dartmouth Aires), but even some of the smallest groups (such as Pentatonix and North Shore) have their chances to shine. North Shore was an old-school doo-wop group who were eliminated fairly early on because they didn't have equivalents to Avi and Kevin, but their first couple of performances were really good; Avi was bowing down to them after their performance of "Runaround Sue" (when they show the reactions from the other groups).
I know how well Mitch sang at this time, after all, they auditioned with "Telephone" and that's a song Mitch knocks out of the park. His being a year behind Scott and Kirstie doesn't really have anything to do with it. Mitch had been in community theater Forever and so were Scott and Kirstie. Mitch and Scott were performing in public places from middle school for Mitch and Scott was in High school. They competed in talent shows together and as soloists. Scott and Kirstin left their first year in college just as Mitch left his last year in High school to audition for this. The skills were there. You have to name a "leader" of your group to be on the show and Scott was who they chose. Now Mitch had really bad anxiety at the time and that may have been why he was okay taking the backseat, but I sometimes think they saved Mitch for just the right moment. Strategically. You'll see what I mean when we get further down the line. After they won this they came back for performances at Christmas and Mitch sang Lead and he was amazing. He was the Mitch we're familiar with and that was only a few months after the show ended so it was there the whole time. But prepare yourself because Scott is the lead singer in almost every song with Mitch having a few solos here and there. I thoroughly enjoy the way that you react! I like having an intelligent discussion about something that's creative. People are going to have different likes and dislikes based on their taste in music without it being an insult to anybody else that somebody else may like. But for me personally the next song is one of my favorites of the whole series. It just blows my mind consistently and I think you will be reminding several times. I look forward to it!
Ahhhh, where it all started to rocket up for PTX! I really respect your thoughts about Mitch doing the lead-- that's a valid thought, and I don't feel like you're hating on anything by saying that :) The Vocal Skips and little acrobatic bits, how their arrangement came together so quick and so flawless. Like the female judge said, it's their meticulous, very 'PTX' choices that you'll only get to see more and more of! The other groups were pretty neat, but PTX was just something way, way different and hands above the rest Performance 5 I think will be right up your alley... and is one of my top 2 of the season!!! Get ready, strap in :)
Great reaction as usual! One of my favorite moments in the whole series is that sweet little trill Kevin does in the bridge - you got a great smile on your face at that. It was so creative and something I'd never seen before, from them or from anyone. I think when you see the next one, you'll really feel the ride that you have embarked on take off. Can't wait!
As one of the people who felt that Video Killed was the real breakthrough and made me believe that PTX was going to win the 3rd season, to your opinion I'll say - Cool! I'm one of the older Pentaholics, and have gotten knocked for my opinions more than once. Me? Opinions are a very personal thing. Yours are yours, mine are mine and as the man said when he chased the birds out the lion's hair by throwing bread at them, "Yeast is yeast, nest is nest and never the mane shall tweet!" Which was a long way to go for a really dumb joke, but the meaning is simple: your opinions are right, my opinions are right. That's why they are called opinions instead of facts.
The show made Scott the face of Pentatonix, but every group had one person who was made to be the leader. I think it was more a choice of the producers of the show. One thing to keep in mind about shows like this is that, in spite of what you see in the B roll footage, the groups don't have full autonomy with their creative choices. Each week the groups had to present their songs to the producers, and it was apparently fairly common for them to not like a particular song and demand a different one. That's what happened to PTX this week. The show filmed some segments afterwords to support the "We decided to change our song" narrative. I'm sure that the producers also pushed to make sure there was one single person (Scott) that the audience could attach themselves to.
True, & people get bent out of shape over things PTX does now but the truth is they are under contract to a record company. The band themselves don't have nearly as much control as it appears. They are surrounded by producers whose job it is to make this thing make money.
Agreed. Also you have to remember that it's not a competition, but a scripted reality show. You can tell in some episodes that Pentatonix was so distinctive that the producers were struggling to come up with setbacks for the group. That's how we end up with Mitch's "full-out disagreement" and the silly "will Kevin's beliefs hold them back" reality-show memes.
Little known is that Kevin (a perfectionist) used a metronome after this to help stay on the beat. You should watch some of the other performances of this season. Loads of talent.
i know i'm a year late here, but i did finally find and watch whole episodes from that season (and 2013), and it does give a better idea of what they had to compete against. It's very interesting!
Enjoying your reactions to these early PTX. You should try another new group Scott Hoying et al put together, AcaPop Kids. They have two new videos, High Hopes and Valerie.
For a comparison, this is my favorite performance by the group I would have been as happy to see win as I was for PTX. They had a lot of issues all season so what you are seeing isn't what they were the whole season. By this performance they were finally pulling it together . Its wonderful th-cam.com/video/PEFXYwOHkXk/w-d-xo.html
I'm so glad you're enjoying these! As was already said in other comments, unfortunatelly, Mitch would probably cave in under the stress if he had a solo for a whole song, especially this early into the competition. He was incredible back then, but even nowadays, you can sometimes see in the PTXperience videos he's nervous before he goes on stage (which, no wonder, I would be nervous too if I were to sing in front of 12000 people :D) and that's after years and years of experience and a lot of emotional and mental growth. You will see Mitch come out a tiny bit out of his shell throughout the Sing-Off, but most of the lead will be carried by Scott. I always enjoy when you give opinions though. It's interesting to see your point of view and it's refreshing to see someone think critically about their performances and give them their credit, but also point out when you feel something could have boost the performance even more. And you can also lighten the mood with a joke or two, which is always a plus :). Anyway, thank you for this. Great reaction!
PTX was a giant push to make Capella mainstream. The sing off was cancelled after this season. After the success of PTX, the group pushed to bring back the show. So, in many ways, PTX is responsible for many groups popularity today. And most fans of PTX also support other groups. The rivalry between the Fries and the Pentaholics is really just a fun thing, like family.(for the reasonable folks, not the trolls)every singer brings something unique to the table, and we all have our prefances. Don't be afraid to state yours.
I finally figured out why you and I agree so often. You're a Coke Zero drinker! LOL I agree that they could have done it a bit differently but given they had two days, they went to the lead that was most comfortable on stage.
Mitch does have some pop-outs in the later performances-- just keep checking it out. And I'd recommend his version of Graveyard and Find You if you to listen to him sing solo!
Yeah, I'm always unsure as to who is better, if anyone can be said to BE better, between Tim and Adam, and Avi and Kevin. Layne and Geoff are also a great matchup for bass and drums. I'm right there with you, they're all quite amazing. Matt and Kevin have a different vibe than Avi and Kevin did, but it's also great, just in a different way. Also agreed, the on top of the beat bit I mean. Most groups, if they get a fast start like that they tend to fall apart, these guys just rolled with it and kept it coming. That's the sign of someone who knows how to perform.
I absolutly get what your saying. Maybe because I am about your age. But keep in mind: they where under 20, got to know 2/5 just a couple of days ago and had little to none experience in Such great audience. Beside at this time Scott and execially mitch hard to handle their anxieties. Mitch Was really shy and unshure. He got saver from time to time.
Oh man, I really want to hear Mitch sing the whole song now! I'm sure he would knock it out of the park. Unfortunately, he was very shy then, and also the Sing Off was very rigid...the producers wanted what they wanted. Even Sara (the judge) was having a hard time with them. Mitch is working on a solo album now, and I cannot wait to see what he does on his own. He's come so far haha. Love your reaction man, I like to hear your thoughts and opinions. Next week is one of my favourites from the sing off!
Nods.. the first few are a little painful to watch -- but they are growing by leaps and bounds from this point on. There are some really seriously good ones coming up! Dog Days, Let's Get it On, and Born to be Wild with just 5 are pretty amazing.
I agree with your assessment wholeheartedly. As for why Mitch didn't take the lead in this song, I could be wrong - but I really believe that Mitch's confidence in his singing actually evolved during the course of this show. He talks later on in this series about how he was teased growing up because of his high voice, but man...did he overcome it! :)
This one is just ok for me. Not sure when the Kanye song comes (5th or 6th performance), but that one is the first standout in my opinion. You'll start to get a little sick of Scott because he'll do so many leads. PTX has since learned to utilize the whole band to create more complex sound.
Always welcome your opinion .great job. You should try and sneak in Super Fruits Guy exe. for Halloween or PTX's Making Christmas. More of a halloween than Xmas.
Mitch may have a better tone for the lead, I hadn't considered that. That said, this is the performance where I knew it was a race for second on the show.
Mitch had really not come forward as a lead at this time. He has not really found his voice. Scott was quite literally the front man. I do not disagree with you ... But at this early point no one really knew Mitch could carry a lead.
I know I lot of people have already told you but Mitch was quite shy at this time, so don't expect him to take the lead. This is also extremely early in their career, like they only met and sang together right before the sing off started! So I don't think it's fair to compare Sing off PTX with current PTX since they've changed so much. And I'm sorry but I can't help that I'm offended when I hear people say that they prefer Mitch over Scott or wants to hear him instead because even though I love everyone in PTX I prefer Scott a little bit more; he can literally sing anything and it sounds amazing and he has the biggest range out of all of them. Don't know if you've noticed that he does the bass when the bass is singing? Despite this it feels like people doesn't appreciate him just because he has the lead a lot. But who has the lead is something they decide together, not something that Scott decides by himself.
Personally, if this song was my only contact with Pentatonix I would have to take a pass on them. They have a lot of great songs just that this song didn’t do it for me.
I don't think Mitch was as confident when they got on this show, Mitch missed his High School graduation for the show, but Scott and Kirsten were already in college.
The other groups were pretty neat, but PTX was just something way, way different and hands above the rest
Performance 5 I think will be right up your alley... and is one of my top 2 of the season!!! Get ready, strap in :)
#5 is AWESOME!
Can't wait!
Your eyes are so pretty!
Thanks for the reaction 🥰
FYI: The Buggies original was the 1st song played on a new 24 hour music channel called.... MTV ! 1985 😉
Very interesting!
Hmmm. Mitch?? All of a sudden, I heard him singing it in my head. And it was goood!
i know i'm a year late here, but i did finally find and watch whole episodes from that season (and 2013), and it does give a better idea of what they had to compete against. It's very interesting!
Enjoying your reactions to these early PTX. You should try another new group Scott Hoying et al put together, AcaPop Kids. They have two new videos, High Hopes and Valerie.
I don't know how you got it through, but I'm glad you did!
Love your honest reactions! They get better every week!
Love your bleu eyes, I had to look twice to see the difference :)
So excited. I love this one. Thank you!
MTV actually had music videos ... Those were the days
I love your reactions. Thank you for your insights. Can't wait for your reaction to the next one (and RnB-week).
Btw, the blue eyes look awesome.
Oooh I never thought about Mitch's voice on the lead. That actually may have been great! I liked it as is anyways! They are all so talented 😊
Correction MTV was "launched" August 1st 1981 not November. Love the reaction :-)
You should check out Adam Rupp from Home Free drum solo
I agree with what you said about Mitch should have lead
Love your reactions! Thank you! If you are gonna do beatboxing please check out Zureck! He goes by RECK. He made the Swissbeatbox org. Thanks
“Don’t Be A DumDum.” 😂😂😂
Homefree did and won the singing off also. Can you react to theirs also.
Please check out PTX “Sing”
now there worth 60 mil.
you have videos from other groups from Sing Off s3 so you can compare. same youtube channel
Can you react to Pentatonix - God only knows? Its the newest one
The original format of MTV was much better than what is on it now.
Mitch may have a better tone for the lead, I hadn't considered that. That said, this is the performance where I knew it was a race for second on the show.
Mitch had really not come forward as a lead at this time. He has not really found his voice. Scott was quite literally the front man. I do not disagree with you ... But at this early point no one really knew Mitch could carry a lead.
this there only 19
I know I lot of people have already told you but Mitch was quite shy at this time, so don't expect him to take the lead.
HOME FREE won the sing-off too (hint hint)
I don't agree about having Mitch sing the lead on this one, great reaction though!
Personally, if this song was my only contact with Pentatonix I would have to take a pass on them. They have a lot of great songs just that this song didn’t do it for me.
I just don't care for this arrangement. Definitely think they could have done better. Way better.
