We take all the cool things that PTX does for granted now, but they really stood out on The Sing Off. No other group was even close in how they approached arrangements. There were some other talented singers but nobody like PTX!
Exactly the same way I felt then. I’ve been enthralled with them ever since. ❤
This was the performance where we started seeing a glimpse of what PTX would become. All of the stops, skips, and craziness that showed a side of acapella people hadn't really seen before. We almost take this for granted now after being spoiled for 13 years.
I have watched them since the Sing Off and their development over the years. The way their sound has magnified and totally filled in for a complete cohesive sound is mesmerizing.
Having watched the previous seasons of The Sing Off, this was the week I fell in love with Pentatonix and picked them to win. At almost 60 y.o., they are still my favorite group. I just love seeing how they have progressed.
Amazing group and a lot of fun to see the beginning of their journey.
It's fun to watch how they listen to, absorb, and apply everything the judges say to every performance. And Shawn (the first official pentaholic) is on his feet giving them a standing ovation after every song. I also believe he was the first to dub Avi and Kevin "meat and potatoes". Sara gushes her praise and Ben, while maybe a little more critical, is always constructive and positive. The producers are the ones who pushed that each group should have a 'leader' or 'spokesman' so Scott kinda got thrown into that role. But what is truly amazing is the growth and confidence they develop each week. 0:12
I kinda got the vibe on The Sing-Off that Ben Folds was trying to be the "Simon Cowell" of the show. If I had to guess, is day grew was instructed by producers to be harsher.

Yup, 2nd comment. I always chuckle when Scott talks about Sonos being what they want to be. I jokingly commented one time that PTX wanted to be Sonos in 2011, but in 2024 everyone is like Who’s Sonos? I think they changed their name at some point, but same question. In the meantime, the members of Pentatonix have a 13 year career, do national and worldwide tours, are millionaires, have won 3 Grammys, have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, are starting families and just living their best lives. I can’t get enough of these 6 (counting Avi too).
I was amazed that Pentatonix put all of that together in just 2 days. They had to arrange the song, learn the song and learn the dance moves in that short period of time. They all have an incredible work ethic. Thanks for the reaction. Shawn Stockman was correct, they were sent to save a cappella. Also, all of the groups had to perform in opening numbers each show. That must have made it extra hard for them that week since they had to find time to work on their performance within 2 days. Oh yeah, Kevin and his wife had a son earlier this month. They just told us Sunday, on Father's Day.
In 2 days. Thats just mindblowing.

Hello Saeed, Love the Sing Off Journey. PTX are so creative with their arrangements. A lot of PTX signatures sounds, vocals and vocalizations in this. Mitch's voice is so clean and clear and hitting those notes. Thanks for his journey!! Looking forward to the next one.

"The Chicks - Wide Open Spaces (Official Video)" (by the channel: The Chicks) --This song is from their fourth studio album also called "Wide open Spaces" released in 1998. It was the first album with new lead vocalist Natilie Maines and became their breakthrough commercial success. The Chicks are an American country music band from Dallas, Texas. The band consists of Natalie Maines (lead vocals, guitarist), and her sisters Martie Maguire (Backing vocals, fiddle, mandolin, guitarist), Emily Strayer (backing vocals, banjo, dobro) along with Laura Lynch and Robyn Lynn Macey (vocals, guitarist). Their genres cover country, bluegrass and country pop music. And, if you enjoy listening to their tunes, they have many more bangers to explore.

Wow…this was soooo long ago. Wish they still kept the Sing-Off as a holiday series. Their arrangements have come so far. So cute seeing Saeed get heated when he thought he had the strong title!

I’m so glad you’re doing the whole series. This really is fascinating to watch them at the very beginning of their career. Please also watch the clip of them actually being announced as the winners. We know they win, but it’s no less emotional. The group themselves are just a bundle of nerves. Poor Mitchell looks like he’s about to cry, throw up, or both.

This is where ptx really started to take off. And if you haven't reacted to the 90s dance medley, you will see that they include the song that they never did
This was a great one
The show required each group to have a clear lead, so Scott was featured more than the others. He often had big parts in the opening numbers as well. Have no idea how he kept it all straight. It’s no wonder he practically lost his voice by the end.
You spoke of how difficult it is to pull everything together, the singing, choreography etc, watch near the end when they come down the steps and you will see Kirsten start to step on Scott’s foot. She quickly adjusts and goes on. That’s how close it can be to messing up but taking it all in stride and pressing on. I think this is where PTX started to really pull it together. From here they just keep upping their game. Performances 7, 11 and 12 are the best. Always fun to rewatch these episodes. Enjoy!!!

All the practice done last minute to get this right, plus the opening number and later two songs per week plus the opening ran them ragged and caused illness and sore throats. A very difficult schedule.
Another great episode. Another great reaction. Isn't this fun?!? Pentatonix are great at pulling off miracles on short notice - here - and for their Sing-Off audition! They used a song (Lady Gaga's "Telephone") they had performed as "The Trio" at a high school concert.

For the audition they just added Avi - and his bass; and Kevin - with his beat boxing skills. Considering they only met Kevin for the first time in person the *DAY BEFORE* the audition I think they pulled off a miracle! They still perform that song in concert...on occasion...to this day.
So much fun! They work great under pressure. Excited for the next one.

Yeah when PTX first came onto the scene after this they marketed themselves as doing futuristic acapella.

Please don't stop with PTX, but in think the predecessor to this style of acapella was captured by groups like The Singers Unlimited and Manhattan Transfer. I would love to know what you think of them.

@@PTXPentaholic I'm a huge fan of The Manhattan Transfer. My introduction to them was the Extensions album because they did a version of Birdland and I already was a fan of Weather Report. I loved the whole album and subsequently got their entire catalogue over time.
Jazz is my favourite genre and because of that I would also include Take 6 and their jazz approach to a cappella in your list.
