    The method presented in this video has become slightly outdated; however, we've developed a program to automate the entire process. There's a free version available for Windows 10 and below, as well as a paid version for Windows 11. Visit www.rmtechcentral.com/lsmc to learn more.

      Cameron Bell So bootable media could be a CD/DVD or a USB flash drive. In the case of Windows 10, creating a bootable flash drive is the most common option. It doesn’t even have to be the Windows 10 installation either. You could use any type of program that allows you to access and modify the file system. You just have to use a utility such a YUMI or something like that to make it bootable, so that you can select the option to boot the computer off of that device instead of booting from the hard drive that has Windows installed. If you are stuck in safe mode, it is possible you may have another issue going on. If you look through my videos I have another one that shows how to download and transfer the Microsoft Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset to a bootable USB drive and how to use it. The Microsoft Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset is not only useful in resetting passwords, but also gives the user many options to solve other issues as well. If you are saying that you are stuck in safe mode, do you mean that the computer boots into safe mode every time you restart it?

    Awesome Tutorial man. I am a PC Tech for a local Computer IT company and this shortcut is a life saver for elderly folks who never remember their passwords or how to use the recovery with their Microsoft account. Saves my time and theirs because I don't half to walk them through a tone of steps they dont understand. Thanks!

    THANK YOU! I was locked out of my PC and spent FOUR DAYS trying to get in via all the other tutorials, websites, and google searches and nothing worked until I came across this video. It may be "outdated", but it was the only one that worked for me. (I didn't use a recovery disk to get to the command prompt). I think the difference between this video and all the other ones (which just copy each other) was to set the grouping of the administrator account after activating it. Whatever, but once again, THANK YOU!

Once I was in with the new administrator account I was able to change the password for the locked account in the usual way. Many thanks.

    For those stuck in safe mode without networking like my sorry ass was
    Use the media Installion key and find the repair option on the install now screen and find the command prompt. Type this in, spaces included all one line of text: bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot
    If that doesn't work try {current} instead of {default} a guy on Microsoft forums posted it hopefully it helps all those stuck. Especially if you just went through hell recovering your pc and files all bloody ready and don't want to reinstall Windows for 4th bloody time.

    Wow Love this!! Your awsome!!!... one last ??. Can we delete our old account. And use the new one like rename it and sign into Microsoft with it?

    • @RMTechCentral
      @RMTechCentral  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for your comment, I really appreciate it! To answer your question... You can delete the old account if you wish, and you can rename it. But... if your original account that you were locked out of is a MS account, the only way to sign back in through Microsoft is to reset the password on the MS website, or create a new MS account and use that one from now on. You could also convert the new account you made to a MS as well I believe but I’m not 100% sure. Anyways, I hope this answered your question, and please don’t hesitate to ask if you need any more help.

      Initially I had the same issue. Type in diskpart hit ENTER then type list volume (or list volumes) hit ENTER. Then you should see a list of the drives available on your computer. The one you want to select is going to be labeled Windows with several hundred gigs of space. In my case the drive letter was E. Type exit to get out then follow along with the rest this tutorial video with the correct drive letter.

    My son gave me his old computer. It had three user accounts on it and could only remember the pin for one but everytime I wanted to get rid of something he had in there or even to defrag I had to put in a password. He finally remembered the password but I figured since it's mine now I'll wipe it out and start fresh with no users or passwords. I did a factory reset but his one account was still on there. I put in the pin that I had been putting in but it won't recognize it. He figured if he changed the Microsoft password that would help but that won't do anything either so I'm locked out. This is an Acer. It's not a tower or laptop it's a computer screen that is the computer and has no disc drive. I don't know what else to try.... I need help

      Hi Adam, this is because Windows has been updated to block this "exploit", however I have posted a link in the description for those that are experiencing this issue. Give that a try, and even though it is not a 100% guarantee, it has a much greater possibility of working than this method here.

Do you have a VGA connector on the laptop that you could use to connect it to a monitor? Also, what is of main importance to you? Just getting back into the computer or salvaging data from the hard drive?

      After windows 10 upgraded in the middle of the night my password would not let me in. So I found your site and was hoping to get help. I am as far as adminitrator for sign in but when the desktop pops up it shows iehost.exe hard error then the screen goes blank and does nothing

    • @RMTechCentral
      @RMTechCentral  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I googled iehost.exe since I have never noticed it as a Windows process before; although it has a legitimate place in some 3rd party applications, most of the sites I brought up indicated that it was typically associated with some sort of malware, as seen here for example: www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/IEHost.EXE-512.html
      If it is malware I have no idea why it would just now be causing an issue after Windows updated, unless it has always been running in the background and the recent Windows update caused it to conflict to the point where it is causing what is now happening to your computer. If it is a legitimate instance of iehost.exe, it looks like it would belong to Corel Draw. Do you have any Corel applications installed on your PC? If not, I would move towards thinking that it is some sort of malicious program running on your computer. If that is the case, I can do my best to try and walk you through removing it, but that could be tough seeing as how I am not right there to see what is going on. Another option (and I'm not the biggest fan of this), is that you could reinstall Windows and I could help you get to any files that are important so that you can back them up. Either way, I'm really sorry that this wasn't as straight forward for you as my video made it out to be. If you need any further help, just let me know!

    If you can access cmd before renaming utilman then why not just do the password change then?

    • @RMTechCentral
      @RMTechCentral  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because you’re not booted into Windows at that point; the OS is offline. Remember, the first step is to boot from a USB disk into the Windows installation. You can’t make Windows system changes at that point, but you can modify files on your hard drive. Every time you boot your computer into Windows it loads it’s registry, which is comprised of multiple files. Most changes in Windows (like user account changes for example) are written to the registry. That registry is not loaded when you boot from USB into the Windows setup for the initial step. That is why you must use this step to copy cmd to utilman, so you can open up the command prompt when you are booted into Windows and all changes made at that point will be written to the registry.

    After installing Windows 10 update to the newer Windows 10 Home version, supplied to me by a Support tech at Microsoft, I couldn't login. It didn't accept my password and asked me for a pin which I hadn't used in years due to the fact that my password has always worked. So I try two attempts using what I thought was the only viable pin choices and then not only has it not accepted a provided code 1a2b3c to use, but now when I reboot, it goes to the same login page with the same provided code.
    Tech support hasn't been able to do anything . . . . . certainly nothing within the registry using regedit. So I am now in safe mode and I'm ready to try just about anything to get this pc back. Mcrsft wants me to do a clean install which means losing everything on the hard drive. If I have to, I'll go to a pc tech service and have then transfer my files and pics and all that crap on to a 8gig stick drive, do a clean install and and reload my files. Unless I find something on You Tube, that's what I'm going to have to do.
    Does anybody know how to deal with this ? ? Thanks ! !

    • @RMTechCentral
      @RMTechCentral  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would launch the command prompt as Administrator and type: net user administrator /active:no, and then net user (your old account) /delete. You could also go to settings -> Accounts and then disable/delete them from there as well. Lastly, if you are on Windows 10 Pro, just press WinKey+R to bring up the run menu and type lusrmgr.msc to bring up the local users and groups management console. That would be the quickest way, but it only works on Pro. Hopefully this helps. Glad this worked for you and thanks for leaving a comment!

    I created an account at the time in a rush and entered a fake email for the user account. How do I reset the password if i can't access the email address that is tied to that account??

    • @RMTechCentral
      @RMTechCentral  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the only problem actually... when it comes to Microsoft accounts, especially if the email doesn't actually exist. The next best thing you can do is create a new local user account and then you can try to access your files from that account (if you need to) and then delete the account under the fake email. If you have already gotten to the part where you can launch the command prompt window from the Ease of Access button on your login screen, then you can type these commands to create a new account - net user "newusername" "newpassword". It should say that the command completed successfully. Next, to make it an admin account type the following - net localgroup administrators "usernamejustcreated" /add. Lastly, if all of that seems like too much, I have created a program to do this all automatically and the link is here: th-cam.com/video/QVPfwpuzVj0/w-d-xo.html. Let me know if you need any additional help. Good luck!

      Rob H Yeah, it definitely sounds like it’s not booting from the disc/USB. What kind of computer do you have? It could be one of many keys you have to press upon starting your computer to bring up the boot menu. Typically F2, F12 or DEL. I have an odd computer that needs FN and F8 pressed simultaneously to enter the boot menu. If you send me the manufacturer and model I may be able to help you out.

      Make sure that you are actually booting from the Windows 10 installation media and not the “built-in” repair thing where you are also able to access the command prompt, which will prompt for a password in that case. Also, this video was like one of my first videos and it is a little outdated and not very thorough... I made a program to automate all of this, which can be found at rmtechcentral.com/lsmc. After reading your comment I tested this on a few different computers, all updated to the latest Windows 10 build with all of the most recent updates. It still worked for me, but maybe something different is going on with your scenario. I am not by any means trying to discredit your comment or anything like that, and would be more than happy to help further if you need it. If you have time, give this a try: rmtechcentral.com/lsmc. It is a program I wrote a while back to automate the process shown in this video. Do you know the Windows 10 edition and build that you are running by chance?

    • @KeyboardWarrior95
      @KeyboardWarrior95 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I've now managed to get back into the PC - Its on version 1709 - build 16.299.248. my issue was that I'd actually disabled the only active admin account through a cmd typing error.. the only active non admin account I didn't know the password for. - I'm wondering if this could have affected this method?
      update - I've just tried it again on the same PC, with the same result - the newly made utilman.exe (which is actually cmd) is missing after rebooting the PC. It is only deleted once I have tried to run it using the EOA button on the lock screen - So I'd assume there is a new process that checks the file before allowing it to run?
      (also, I'm now back into the PC having found another way around it that did the trick in my case thankfully..)

    • @RMTechCentral
      @RMTechCentral  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that’s really weird and I’m glad you let me know. Definitely something I’ll have to look into once again. You don’t happen to be running Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 in S mode? Just wondering because I have not tested on either of those. Either way, I’m glad to hear that you got it sorted out and you’re back into the computer!

    I think our computers are different, bc it's not working for me. I don't have a CD drive nor is my command prompt the same as urs. I just don't understand this.

      I'm not sure about the command prompt, but as far as not having a CD drive, you should be able to create an image on a USB flash drive and boot off of that.

    • @RMTechCentral
      @RMTechCentral  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re not able to restart your computer using the power button on your login screen, the next best option (though not recommended in most scenarios) is to just hold down the power button on your computer until it shuts off, and then turn it back on. If you’re missing the other button for the ease of access, then that would be a different story. Also, there is a link in the description of this video to a much refined and mostly automated way to accomplish what is shown in this video. You might want to check that out if this video here doesn’t work out.
