Red Card Ruin against the 'Boro - Sunderland vs Middlesbrough

  • Watch a breakdown of Sunderland AFC vs Middlesbrough FC in the EFL Championship. A tight first half saw chances for both sides, but the deadlock was eventually broken by a second Yellow Card for Dan Neil, reducing Sunderland to 10 men on the stroke of half time.
From there Sunderland emerged for the second half with a defensive 5-3-1 formation, hoping to use wing backs in attack, but they never got the chance. The formation invited pressure and Sunderland were quickly overwhelmed. By the time Mowbray realised the error the game was gone.
Ultimately the game turned on a controversial sending off, but that alone does not explain a 0-4 drubbing. So check out the video to see just what on earth went on.

The Ref was suspect from the start of the game, and it was no surprise he sent one of our players off. Mowbray also had a brain fart that day and got it wrong from start to finish, I know he was missing a lot of players especially in midfield but the set up was all wrong. Great video as always mate.

    Spot on analysis again mate.
I think Boro exposed and exploited our frailties in this game.
Neil’s sending off was unjust, but i feel we lacked maturity and composure at times, something we’ve been exceptional at in the recent season/s in the Championship.
Boro are on a roll and i think with our numerous injuries we were always going to struggle.
Being down to 10 made it an almost impossible task.
Hopefully Ekwah, Cirkin, Alese, and numerous others will be back in time for our next three tough fixtures.
I think they’re gonna be critical to whether we ‘put up’, compete and show promotion credentials, or find ourselves settling for a mid table/play off finish(at best) this year.
I’m not gonna lay into these lads at anytime as they’re a very young squad, still learning every game.

Great video as always mate. While the second-half wasn’t good enough from our perspective, it doesn’t mean the officials, especially the referee, should be immune to being criticised. How Boro didn’t have at least one player sent off is beyond me, even more so when you look at the incident where a couple of their players showed dissent themselves.
Anyway, all we can do is move onto Stoke. Hopefully we respond by getting three points on Saturday. 🙏

The refs choices were bizarre. I hope we don't see him again for the rest of the season. I think we've done well and only really deserve to have genuinely lost one of the games we've been beaten in this season, but the reality is that a quarter of the season is gone and we've lost four. We will not get promoted finishing the season with 16 losses so they have to stop.

    • @michaelbowers541

@@altending I agree with that. We’ve still had a good start to the season. But we need to start turning losses into draws for me. If we lose games at the rate we have been then we need to win 30 games across the season if we wanna push for second.
For the record, I’d be content with playoffs again but that’s just me. I’d love us to get second place but highly doubt it’ll happen unfortunately.

Luke O'nien gets away with more outrageous professional fouls than any player in football history.
We've seen him get away scot-free for, blatant hand balls in the box, shirt pulling, piggybacking players (last man), kissing players on multiple occasions and now blatantly pushing a striker in the back in the box. This is all mixed in with his constant niggling fouls and brinkmanship.
He seems so intent on his niggling and hugging opposition players in fact, that he is unable to actually defend most of the time.
Personally I'd rather the club had gone for a genuine CB (Dion Sanderson for example) , than bank on his favouritism with refs and not renew his contract last off season.

Thumbs UP for your video and analysis (stone waller, that one 🙂), wish there was a thumbs down button for the officiating and how I felt after the game.
I felt a few of the lads looked a bit leggy during the game, especially in the second half and there were a few instances of naivety. Not going to apportion blame to individuals though as the management should have seen it and acted accordingly. We should be getting used to under performing teams suddenly finding an ability to up their game against us and be ready to take advantage. Our pass completions have been excellent in previous games, so it was a concern even before half time as there were a few short, long and missed passes to set alarm bells ringing. My uneducated eyes spotted Neil isolated and pulling out of tackles that he would have made in previous games and in this one if not for the yellow hanging over him.
I had my usual pre-match bet on a win for the lads and despite the above, I shoved a few more quid on when 0-1 down as I genuinely believed the extended odds offered a good price and I still had faith that the lads could pull it back. The second was a sucker punch , and the third.... Well, your sarcasm was well contained as that level of blind linesmanship was an absolute joke.
It should have been an edge of the seat game for both sets of players and fans, I get that officials like us all are human, and can make mistakes in real time, but we were beaten by informed decisions that were badly executed. Fingers crossed the international break sees reflection by all who wear Red and White and energy levels, fitness and players back from injury can raise expectations and give us the correct outcome in the next game. We have a score (or two) to settle with them down the road. Ha'way the Lads!

    • @altending

Yep I feel the same sentiment. I'm not going to blame Tony, sometimes we get things wrong. So long as it isn't a repeated error that leads to repeated difficulties. It's hard to judge other teams in the early part of the season, but we should start seeing some consistency about results between now and January. Good to have your thoughts as always.
I expect to be reporting on a win at Stoke, so here's hoping.

Always going to be an uphill struggle second half but we fall apart a bit too easily.
The fact that we didn't bring Tarantis on and move Luke O into midfield , the most obvious solution, suggests the former is only ready for a ten minute cameo when a game is wrapped up.
Every time there's a start of season directive, respect for officials, all the officials are on board at the start. It always slackens off unless it's a totally new law. new law. The refs approached the keeper for every single penalty to instruct them to keep at least a part of a foot on the line. Always been a rule as far as i am concerned but hey ho. .After six or seven games the respect the officials guide lines seem to have gone out of the window in a lot of games The joker in charge of the Boro game couldn't . even app;ly the guide lines in any semblef sense .

Appealing and dissent/swearing at the ref are two different things, hence why the Boro players weren't booked.
Ballard also clattered Dieng badly, O'Nein thought he was in a WWE ring for most of the game.
Dan Niel shouldn't have been on the pitch anyway for the tackle, but the yellow for Neil was so soft.

    • @altending
      @altending  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed it. Obviously I give a biased slant, but on those points.
Dissent is specifically listed as the following by the FA - Whenever more than one player approaches the referee, at least one of those players, and potentially more, will be shown an automatic yellow card. Practically, any player that runs from a distance to approach the match officials will be booked.
It is indisputable that 'boro players did this on numerous occasions and were not booked. That's fine if the referree is consistent, but he wasn't. He also failed to use the FA guidance of a 'stepped approach' to dealing with dissent. He went straight to the yellow. Again fine...if he had been consistent previously with dissent.
Ballard did not forearm Dieng in the face. There is a clear difference.
You reference Dan Neil's early tackle with his studs up. No he cannot be sent off for that, because he doesn't connect. You cannot be sent off for a tackle that does not occur. When that happens (ie refs get it wrong in what they see) those cards are always overturned on appeal. So not, you are categorically wrong to suggest Neil should have been sent off earlier. If he connects with those studs up, then certainly, but no part of his boot touches any part of the player so he cannot be sent off.
