      +TFB TV also I don't know about you but a rifle or any gun that can open bottles isn't weird its just the company acknowledging that people like to drink and shoot... it might not be a good idea to do it at the same time... but still it's pretty ingenious

    • @MrSkyl1ne
      @MrSkyl1ne 9 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      +BigHairyFenian since it's an israeli rifle and jews don't drink a lot of alcohol i think the chance they opened water bottles is bigger than opening beer bottles.

    You can probably use a PPSH-41 with 71 round mag as a chair.

    Warning, side-effects may include: Smelling of cosmoline.

    • @DarthTrazyn
      @DarthTrazyn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I've never handled the ppsh but I'm sure that would only work if you happen to be very light... I'm almost 300 pounds and some so called sturdy chairs break when I sit down... I doubt that the mag would support me... I power lift so that's why I weigh so much... I'm not just obese

    • @biljartball
      @biljartball 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Ted E Bear No, it was again, with the AK magazines in the video, prevent the soldiers from breaking their guns. At the time, lots of soldiers were eating coffee, but then were just the stock of their rifle to smash the coffeebeans, so putting a grinder into the stock meant that the rifles wouldn't break os fast.

    • @TheVeganBear
      @TheVeganBear 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @biljartball
      @biljartball 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Ted E Bear No I meant that the REASON of the coffee grinder rifle was to prevent the gun from breaking. In the video they spoke about the AK mags being used to open bottles with, so they made the galil with a bottle opener to prevent the mags from breaking. I might've been unclear about that, my apologies.

    AN-94 with double first shot and slanted mag and crazy pulley firing mechanism seems like it should be on a list like this

    • @tfbtv
      @tfbtv  9 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      +3E A gun firing a salvo burst like the AN94 does is not really a new concept. Several firearms have shared that feature. The pulley system they use is very interesting though!

    • @3-E
      @3-E 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TFB TV very interesting! What other guns operate like this? Do you mean burst in general or multiple shots with seemingly only one recoil?

    • @tfbtv
      @tfbtv  9 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      3E
      The "hyperburst" feature was considered for a long time to be the holy grail of infantry small arms. Plenty of programs have tried to get there like the SPIW, HK G11, and AAI ACR entry. The cost however always seems to be a deal killer. For example, an AN94 is 5 times more expensive than a standard AK74m rifle, and according to Ian from Forgotten Weapons, it would have cost more to adopt the G11 than to reunify Germany!

    • @3-E

      Yeah, I've heard the trigger pull argument too; but I imagine a well machined, high-quality rifle would minimize that to the point where the benefits would outweigh it. I've never really had problems myself the few times I've had the opportunity.

    Those of us who were issued M16s with the 3 prong flash hider, also used them as wire cutters. They worked great opening cases of C rations. Just snag the wire like you did with the Valmet, give it a twist, and the wire would pop. You didn't even have to fire a round.

    Fun fact most Russian manufactured guns have a bottle opener hidden somewhere. Morin nagant has it in the bolt, makarov and tokerev has it if u pull the slide back, 1895 nagant revolver has it with the thing that pushes out the casings, and the SVD has it next to the mag. This is just to name a few. And also some French guns have wine bottle openers.

    Heckler & Koch 91 + 93 both had a small hook on the forearm with a hole in it so that you could drive a nail into a wooden wall and hang the firearm on a wall so that nations with not a lot of money for firearms could save money on storage in their armories. Those Firearms also had the aequitas bottle opener so that the aluminum magazine lips would not be damaged by guys opening their beer. Another unique aspect of the 762 model was that if you had a squib load that foul the barrel the instructions actually stated to fire the next round.

    The bottle opener feature is just a bonus, that groove is what holds the bipod in place, no-one with military experience will go out on patrol or whatever with glass bottles, think about the first time you need to dive for cover and that bottle breaks and impales you....

    @galshaine2018 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Definitely interesting to see (and read) the impressions and concepts by civilian gun collectors or enthusiasts (saying that in a positive way) about certain non US firearms of military use, compared to the impressions of former soldiers who used such weapons at the time and place where they had their heyday. While the Galil as service infantry rifle at the IDF was appreciated it was quite quickly seen as TOO heavy (the rifle as well as its mag’s), notoriously rust sensitive and suffering from strong effects such as loosed stock (the noise caused by the stock ‘banging’ on the frame was often muffled by wrapping it with a bandana type of cloths when off duty … ), the bipods constantly getting loosed (almost all Galil rifles had those removed by the mid 80s as the bipods were always getting worn out faster than any other part. The ‘can opening’ ring was also replaced by one lacking the two edges that held the folded bipods).
    It was also seen as very much inaccurate due to the fact the two sights were not located on the same part of the rifle and the upper (removable) cover of the rifle-where the back sight was located-tended to get worn out quickly too and quite often was probably able to ‘shift’ a half millimeter either side - meaning that the back sight was not in reality fixed. Even though I know that the Galil non fixed sights were taking more than needed ‘blame’ for the marksmanship problems in the brigades… I still remember a short article in an army newspaper in the mid 90s describing an occasion when a mission of one west European army infantry (Dutch I believe) were on work visit to an IDF brigade. The end of the article said something like ‘The guests liked the fact that the Galil can be easily used when wearing winter gloves and at the range quickly proved to us in the IDF that our myth of the Galil being inaccurate is just a myth’. However - it was always seen as highly reliable and durable.
    Closing the stock was ordered to be done only by pressing and holding, simultaneously, the base of the stock and back of the rifle, so to release the lock of the stock and fold it. In reality many used to close the stock by hitting if from the side with your hip or hitting it with your shoulder. This action was the cause for the rapid worn out condition of the rifles stock. The can opening option was listed (as a picture) in a field manual from the 70s but this to had been deliberately designed to function as a bottle opener an urban (or maybe better said ‘basic training classroom’) myth. It was told by 1000s of boot camp NCO’s to 100000s of conscripts… and I guess many believed it… same people would occasionally tell you that the m-16 was also designed so to serve as an oar in Vietnam.
    1990 I recall that it was already seen as too problematic in many aspects - mainly for its weight. In 1991 or 1992 one infantry brigade was issued (or ‘re issued’ considering the fact they already used it in the 70s…) the classic M-16. In my basic training in Brigade No. 1 in 1993 we were the first to receive the M-16 - in the middle of the 4 month basic training. Obviously the staff who praised the Galil a month before were now praising the merits of the M-16. Still it took a few years before people started trusting the M-16 as a better alternative (many of the M-16 issued for a start were old 1970s ones with old mags and too often worn out from years of service). Within a few years M-16s were issued even for the Armored and Artillery units and the Galil’s, and its very common short version, were passed to the reserves - from where they also disappeared at least 10 years ago.
    All in all the weapon was never considered as the default rifle for the entire army and treated as requiring much training and generally more dangerous than the M-16. In rear/non combat units who were armed the M-16 was the default and seen as the weapon ‘anyone can use’ and the Galil as requiring a whole day of intensive training before its issued to a rear soldier or a non combatant serving in a front unit. The fact that the safety pin needed to be changed to ‘single’ in order for the rifle to be loaded was seen as a major safety breach and indeed accidental discharge of rounds (in the range or on duty) quickly decreased once the M-16s were re issued in the front line units. The short M-16 were, and still are, the most beloved weapon of choice. My father had (among others... with the Mauser, Uzi, M-14) an M-16, I had (with Galil and M-14) an M-16 and my older son now has an M-16 as a service rifle in his unit. If any of his company know about the Galil (or Uzi…) its only from playing online games…

    The nickname in Alberta for that particular accessory on the Galil is a "church key." After seeing the Galil on Forgotten Weapons and here, I want to move someplace where I can own a Galil. A much as I love the VZ-58, that is just the ultimate uber-cool design feature. Galils are Prohibited class firearms in Canada, as they're considered an "AK Variant." I can buy a .50 BMG rifle but not a Galil - logic plays no part in it. When I was a kid (dinosaurs walked the Earth) there was an Army recruiting ad on the radio that went ....(singing) "There's no life like it..." Little did I know.

    Oh cool, a valmet. One thing I'd like to mention about the muzzle wirecutter is that as one who served in the FDF, I find it odd that a finnish rifle would have such a wasteful thing. (dunno if it's truly meant to work by firing the rifle, my service rifle didn't have that feature) The doctrine we were taught was pretty conservative, no bursting and save ammo when you can, the idea of cutting a wire with a bullet seems strange to me. Suppose that is just a feature to be used as a last ditch effort.
    edit: Well, now that I think about it, firing at the enemy while cutting the wire makes more sense. But still a bit strange.
