Saying simply " we have to hold accountability and fix our mistakes " is not enough for the vast history of Terrioism which was carried out by the colonialism of modern day US.
Each and every nation throughout the whole history of the world has committed terriosm in many forms, and the US is one of the biggest driving forces of that said "terriosm" considering their long history.

What makes American terrorism worst imo is because most all of it is done covertly behind the peoples backs and in denial to the world, and this hurts because the USA was looked up to by the world as an example of a good country that would do right by the people and uphold justice and honor to the world while at the same time behind our backs screwing us over but with their lips saying god bless america and bringing hipocracy to levels never seen on the earth before. Using our military around the world to pursue regime change in country’s that had duly elected governments and crushing our way into country’s that didn’t want us there and forcing the way for USA corporations to dominate resources in foreign markets. Listen to general smedley butlers video speeches. He did this in USA from Spanish American war thru ww2.

Considering US ‘short history’, there are only 16 years without war.
It’s a war state, before it wars itself to death, the most worrisome dangerous part is It may bring the rest of the work down.

A nation is funded and feed on wars has NO RIGHT TO EXIST, because it’s the:
      ENEMY OF HUMANITY
      ENEMY OF HUMAN RIGHT
      ENEMY OF FREEDOM
      ENEMY OF DEMOCRACY
      ENEMY OF PEACE

Learning from our mistakes, no one is perfect, I thank you Scott for sharing this valuable lesson with us, I am from Algeria, and by listening to people like you (especially you for your credit), I really feel like there is still hope for peace in the world, that's my wish to see nobody cying because of lack in food or water or security.
I think we should all revive the kid inside of us, the scene you described makes a lot of sense to me, I think we have a lot to learn from kids.

U call the genocide of millions upon millions of people, inhuman crimes against humanity, slavery, Imperialism & wholesale invasion of poor impoverished countries & plundering their resources "mistakes"?

A política externa dos EUA é nojenta. Meu país sofre forte interferência dos EUA e isto explica porque um país tão rico como o Brasil tem tantas pessoas pobres. 😡

America is complicated, always has been. But one thing is for sure, The American revolution was historical, and even though it's not cool to talk about it anymore, it was a good thing. It's easy for us in the 21st century to find reasons to criticize it, but we can't divorce the founding fathers from their historical context. If you were alive back then as an American, do you really think you'd have been any better? The odds are you wouldn't have. And everything that has happened since then, we of course have to take responsibility for all of it. But it happened, we can't undo history. The best we can do right now is oppose the geopolitical agenda of the current American elites, and seek to reconcile America as it is with what it could be. But on the other hand, I disagree with this idea that America was uniquely evil. Slavery and racism were everywhere. Everywhere. Racism is still the norm throughout the world. In most of it's manifestations, it's not brutal and violent racism, but everyone has different cultures that don't always mesh very well together when they meet. And that will always exist. I'm not trying to justify what the US did through it's history to black Americans for example, but things need to be put into context and need to be properly understood. So that we can find actual solutions.
Today, I find that because I'm white, I'm not allowed to be proud of who I am, I can't criticize other groups of people like they are so willing to criticize white people. Racial division has become a two way street. Plenty of minorities here in the US can be pretty racist themselves. Especially now that America isn't a real country anymore, we don't have anything to make people assimilate to, and so they come here, and people like Ilhan Omar are allowed to hold office. When I say people like her, I mean an American politician who is not of this country, who openly says that she is Somalia first, Islam second, and America not at all. How on Earth could you justify that to me as a founding stock American? And average immigrants, they are only appreciative of America insofar as we allow their whole families to come here, and for economic reasons. This can't go on. Of course, our overseas adventures need to end to fix this, but it doesn't mean we can't talk about it.

If there was more EQUALITY and less of cheatinglyingand stealing the other countries would develop too and wouldn't need to travel to richer countries (inequality) to find opportunities.
As for geeling the racism. Well if it is a thing it's one that has been lllooonnnggg instituted by white people.
If you think and are aware of race then it is a legacy of that difference.
IT IS A THING BECAUSE WE MADE IT A THING!
IF YOU'RE FEELING IT NOW IS BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN MADE TO BE IMPORTANT TO GAIN PRIVILEGES AND EXCLUDE OTHERS.
