The main problem with the train station is, that due to land ownership things it can not be rebuild/renewed, because some people wanted to use the law to get big bucks from state to buy their land around and under te station. From my understanding, it was someone from the parcelling office, that intentionally made some "mistakes", and put land under a public station to private owners, who then later demanded overblovn prices (and still do), but contrary to their expectations, state just didn´t bought it from them. And that is why it looks so bad, and probably will for a long time.
Just to add, this ownership situation has progressed a bit, it is just impossible to gather big enough investment at the moment, as other parts of Slovakia are in need of investment too and by rules of eurofunds have bigger priority

Hey Mark! We day-tripped Bratislava from Vienna last week. We LOVED it. Just the right size for a nice day trip. I found it affordable vs cheap as well, and the crowds were MUCH SMALLER than Vienna. We pretty much fit everything in we needed to. BTW - This was the only city we visited (Munich/Salzburg/Bratislava/Budapest) where I had to speak German to our lunch waiter because he did not speak any English - it was a cool experience). Did you notice the Soviet mosaic in the train station? Told the Sputnik story on the right side... it's in very good shape! A few observations - the train from Vienna to/fr Bratislava was a combined OBB and Slovak train with cars from both companies. The Slovakian cars had AC and 220 volt plugs. The OBB cars had neither! Also, booking the train ticket on the Slovakian carrier's website was significantly cheaper than the OBB site. I found the same thing when we went to Budapest to/fr Vienna. The Hungarian carrier was about half-price for the same seat compared to the OBB. CHEERS!!!
Thanks for making this video and sharing it. I live in far eastern Czech Republic, and I am thinking of a weekend trip to Bratislava soon. This will help. I prefer traveling around Europe during the off-season, a benefit of living in the EU. I just have to make sure I have easy Euro access, as crowns, which we still use, do not cut it there!
I will probably offend many locals from Bratislava now, but ... 1. Bratislava is few times more expensive than any other city in Slovakia and maybe just as expensive as High Tatras mountain resort (i mean, what would you expect from the capital right?!) 2. Bratislava is more of a culture mix, sometimes you will meet there more foreigners on the streets than Slovaks, so if you want to get more into Slovak culture, this shouldn't be your only stoppage in Slovakia 3. not only for me but also for my friends, Bratislava feels a little chaotic, sometimes it's hard to navigate through, sometimes it surprises you with lack of something you would expect from such modern city 4. It also lacks a true and beautifully organized historical centre, which you can find in many cities around Slovakia (for example Košice, Žilina, Levoča, Kremnica, Bardejov, Martin ...), not mentioning the US embassy's fence blocking half of the historical square ... I'm not saying Bratislava is bad place to visit, just wanted to let you know Slovakia is much bigger than that and there are maybe EVEN more beautiful and EVEN cheaper places to visit
Funny how opinions can vary depending on your POV. I'm Slovak and I can tell you that most people outside of Bratislava actually consider Bratislavians "the capital city people", which doesn't mean they are not nice or anything... The prices might be affordable for someone with western salary, but it's still the most expensive city in Slovakia. The train station is famous also within Slovakia, but it's funny you are warning about it in a video where it is already after a decent reconstruction, I wonder what would you say before :D Another thing, the dumplings with bryndza, there might be some restaurants in BA where you get them at a decent level, but you should really try them on a real "Salaš", because nothing can beat that when it's so fresh from the source.
I'm a native of Bratislava and I miss Saint Martin's Cathedral in this video. Bratislava (Pressburg) was the coronation site and legislative center and capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1563 to 1783, eleven Hungarian kings and eight queens were crowned in St Martin's Cathedral. Most Hungarian parliament assemblies were held here from the 17th century until the Hungarian Reform Era, and the city has been home to many Hungarian, German and Slovak historical figures.
You forgot to mention that those kings and queens were mostly HAbsburgs and thus German (Austrian)emperors too! And then Bratislava was called Poszonyi. The German word has always been Pressburg. Like in the humiliating Treaty of Pressburg when the Emperor Charles had to bow to Napoleon after the battle of Austerlitz outside Brno. (Bridge in Paris). It took place in the castle of Bratislava.
I was born in Bratislava ,and I live in Britain now.Yee, Bratislava train station is not really a turist attraction ,but in Britain I saw much worse train stations.Even mess and homelessness ,in Britain is much worse around stations ,if I compare.
one thing i'd add is don't be scared to leave the Bratislava area, if you like the culture, architecture etc. i'd definitely recommend visiting the northern regions of Slovakia, absolutely worth it
@Brett M the views are gorgeous and you can totally find fun attractions (there's a pretty unique cableway for example, often there are different events hosted around the High Tatras area, or of course there's the option of hiking, which is also a great experience anywhere around Slovakia really). also, especially during summer, there is SO many people literally everywhere, which honestly makes it pretty annoying to me. over all though, i would say that there's a LOT of tourist traps and it can be really expensive depending on where you choose to stay, eat, hike etc. id personally give it a 8/10 :D
We are in Bratislava now for two days and we are really impressed of the city. You don't need a car. The transportation is perfect and cheap!! As you said you can see all the sightseeing by walking!!! Underestimated capital!!
St Michael's Gate is closed at the moment (and covered in scaffolding) so you can't climb to the top. The 3 day tourist card is only 28 euros (and includes free travel) so although not hugely money saving, it is convenient.
I lived in Bratislava for 7years. Don't underestimate the shot drinks some of the local distilled drinks are very strong. Don't be afraid to explore more than just the historic centre. There are surprising hidden places all over Bratislava Don't be afraid to travel outside Bratislava. There are citiesike Trnava another 45 mins by train or the Red Rock Castle (Cervany Kamen) close by as well
If you are there for more than one day, I would highly reccomend you to see the more suburban parts aswell as the richer hills. Gives you many perspectives since bratislava is a quite small city, still with many different aspects.
haha... so nice here all these facts about my hometown :) aaand bit funny ... Nice video. To rest of you all: Come to Bratislava, its our Little Big City :) Go to cocktail bar speakeasy: in the video view toward Michaels Gate, there is a green house Urban Bistro on the left side. Go there and upstairs to restrooms but on the other side is an old wardrobe, open it like into Narnia. Enjoy the best drinks :) Dont eat on Michals gate street, tourist traps only. Go to Namestie SNP (Square SNP) and ask for Flagship - Bratislavska restauracia. Its a restaurant inside old church or theatre and have the best dumpling and food in centre.
If you walk like 1km from the city center you will be even more surprised with the prices of food/drinks. There is a huge difference between food/drink prices directly in the center and the rest of the city. :)
There are many train stations in Bratislava and most of them are very modern and bright and clean. The main train station is not a correct representation of the city or country. There are small towns far from Bratislava that have modern and clean trainstations. The problem with the main one in Bratislava is very complex. The country is pretty much aware of this issue but the country is powerless. The main train station is in a private ownership. No one can do anything about the station until the owner decides to sell it. Long story short.
Please make a video on the best places to see fashion history (like for example rococo era or Victorian era). Also for architecture like for example if we love rococo and baroque architecture what cities are top list to make a trip to?! Just a suggestion of course. Thanks for your honest videos!
Do not worry about climbing up and down in Bratislava. Is mostly flat city. Do not forget to move a bit away from centre of city along the Danube. There are asphalted paths and Danube has little pebble beaches where you can rest and watch the nature. Do not forget to go and try rich man baguette. It is affordable and all who were studying in Bratislava has it at least once. Is there open for more then 20 years and it is easy and quick street food. Do not forget to return drink cans to the shop they return you portion of your money for them. Do not go to Bratislava just once. It is really nice city with better weather then Prague. It has more then 300 hours of sunshine in a year then Prague. So longer and brighter summer.
@@kinginigo8007 the majority here is very kind and calm, but sometimes you can find someone who do not welcome you. I am Muslim, and I live in peace. What Slovak people need is dealing with foreign people because they are not used to that especially with Arab people. Good and bad is basic of every thing😊
I love this video... :D BTW. there is a reason why we have so much fat in the food. Cos we like to drink in the pubs... and when you want to drink, it is allways good to eat some fat food first because then you can survive the drinking night quite easily. ;-)
Love how he sais it is really really cheap in Bratislava when for people in slovakia it is expensive af compare to the rest of the country. Just saying just coke costs 5 times more than in the rest of the country.

5:15 - the main train station is considered a not very pleasant place even by Slovak people. There have been plans for rebuilding it for some time, but it has been delayed multiple times. And to add one more "don't" that hasn't been mentioned in the video and that's also related to the main train station: Don't get into one of the taxi cabs parked in front of the station and call one instead. Apparently they are known for preying on tourists and overcharging for fares.

CHEERS!!!
Don't forget to go and see the Blue Curch, it's well worth the 15 minute walk from the old town main square to see it.
The city in which I was born yet not been back to for 20+ years, cheers for the memories!
Thank you for this! We’re watching it on the train on our way to Vienna.
I’ve been and it’s a beautiful city 🇸🇰 🤍💙❤️
THANKS FOR THIS . WE ARE GOING FOR 3 DAYS NEXT WEEK ALL BEST FROM YORKSHIRE .
Thanks for making this video and sharing it. I live in far eastern Czech Republic, and I am thinking of a weekend trip to Bratislava soon. This will help. I prefer traveling around Europe during the off-season, a benefit of living in the EU. I just have to make sure I have easy Euro access, as crowns, which we still use, do not cut it there!
i was born in bratislava and i can approve your tips for tourists. Thx for visiting Bratislava and next time stay here for longer:)
I am from Slovakia. Thank you for video. :)
Don’t get ripped off by the cab drivers from the train station. We did .
Love that place
I will probably offend many locals from Bratislava now, but ...
1. Bratislava is few times more expensive than any other city in Slovakia and maybe just as expensive as High Tatras mountain resort (i mean, what would you expect from the capital right?!)
2. Bratislava is more of a culture mix, sometimes you will meet there more foreigners on the streets than Slovaks, so if you want to get more into Slovak culture, this shouldn't be your only stoppage in Slovakia
3. not only for me but also for my friends, Bratislava feels a little chaotic, sometimes it's hard to navigate through, sometimes it surprises you with lack of something you would expect from such modern city
4. It also lacks a true and beautifully organized historical centre, which you can find in many cities around Slovakia (for example Košice, Žilina, Levoča, Kremnica, Bardejov, Martin ...), not mentioning the US embassy's fence blocking half of the historical square
Thank you Bratislava. It was really unforgettable trip. Everything was above my expectations.
What a great job of describing this place! Thank you!
Wow! Sounds like an awesome towm!
Book a tour with Authentic Slovakia. Fun and offbeat, you’ll see some fun stuff.
Slovakia🇸🇰 ♥️ Slovenia🇸🇮
I was born in Bratislava ,and I live in Britain now.Yee, Bratislava train station is not really a turist attraction ,but in Britain I saw much worse train stations.Even mess and homelessness ,in Britain is much worse around stations ,if I compare.
yes like any kkind of station wasnt built in 1980´s in western world
It's nice to eat in the Hotel Devin just beneath the bridge and see the river traffic.
one thing i'd add is don't be scared to leave the Bratislava area, if you like the culture, architecture etc. i'd definitely recommend visiting the northern regions of Slovakia, absolutely worth it
@Brett M the views are gorgeous and you can totally find fun attractions (there's a pretty unique cableway for example, often there are different events hosted around the High Tatras area, or of course there's the option of hiking, which is also a great experience anywhere around Slovakia really). also, especially during summer, there is SO many people literally everywhere, which honestly makes it pretty annoying to me. over all though, i would say that there's a LOT of tourist traps and it can be really expensive depending on where you choose to stay, eat, hike etc. id personally give it a 8/10 :D
Wasn't aware of any of these for our visit to Bratislava luckily we didn't put a step wrong 😅
Been there 2 months ago for a day trip and it is truly a wonderful place to visit. Too bad we didn't get to try the goat cheese you mentioned😊.
I lived in Bratislava for 7years.
Don't underestimate the shot drinks some of the local distilled drinks are very strong.
Don't be afraid to explore more than just the historic centre. There are surprising hidden places all over Bratislava
Don't be afraid to travel outside Bratislava. There are citiesike Trnava another 45 mins by train or the Red Rock Castle (Cervany Kamen) close by as well
"don`t be afraid of a locals" - man, I was laughing for five minutes straight...
My old Highschool is literally under the Castle
If you are there for more than one day, I would highly reccomend you to see the more suburban parts aswell as the richer hills. Gives you many perspectives since bratislava is a quite small city, still with many different aspects.
You’re so cool!! You got almost a mil sub. Means you did it! What we all wanna do! Travel and do this
Thank you for this amazing video about our capital city ❤❤❤
Hi Mark wow super 👌🏻👍
haha... so nice here all these facts about my hometown :) aaand bit funny ... Nice video. To rest of you all: Come to Bratislava, its our Little Big City :)
Go to cocktail bar speakeasy: in the video view toward Michaels Gate, there is a green house Urban Bistro on the left side. Go there and upstairs to restrooms but on the other side is an old wardrobe, open it like into Narnia. Enjoy the best drinks :)
Dont eat on Michals gate street, tourist traps only. Go to Namestie SNP (Square SNP) and ask for Flagship - Bratislavska restauracia. Its a restaurant inside old church or theatre and have the best dumpling and food in centre.
I would so love to visit Slovakia someday as it's half of my heritage.
Mine too, tho my grandmother's home town changed countries with every war in the 20th century, it is now in Slavakia.
If you walk like 1km from the city center you will be even more surprised with the prices of food/drinks. There is a huge difference between food/drink prices directly in the center and the rest of the city. :)
Going there in August to see a slipknot gig, will be travelling from the UK as slipknot decided not to do a UK tour😑 thanks for this video 🍻
1st rule of rule of Bratislava: watch your belongings at all times
There are many train stations in Bratislava and most of them are very modern and bright and clean. The main train station is not a correct representation of the city or country. There are small towns far from Bratislava that have modern and clean trainstations. The problem with the main one in Bratislava is very complex. The country is pretty much aware of this issue but the country is powerless. The main train station is in a private ownership. No one can do anything about the station until the owner decides to sell it. Long story short.
why ? it doesnt look that outdated
If you are a romantic soul or a design enthusiast, don't forget to visit the Blue Church nearby Sarafarikovo namestie (square) 😉
Please make a video on the best places to see fashion history (like for example rococo era or Victorian era). Also for architecture like for example if we love rococo and baroque architecture what cities are top list to make a trip to?! Just a suggestion of course. Thanks for your honest videos!
Vienna
So longer and brighter summer.
very useful info !! on point !
Great informative video
I love Slovakia alot.
I thought Slovakia wasnt really safe for foreigners especially for Muslims since I heard its quite a racist country.
BTW. there is a reason why we have so much fat in the food.
Dont forget to buy a ticket for the tram or bus and stamp it in the machine as the ticket checkers will not mess around and will drag you off the tram or bus

Thanks for your nice words, I am from Bratislava. The old town is not cheap. And you forget to say, we have nicest ladies in the world :) And we have new bus station, check Nivy Bratislava. Train Station is realy awful shame.
why ? it doesnt look that bad to me, normal station
From Slovakia 🇸🇰
Awesome video
I just went to Prague. This is my next destination in feb, 2025. See you soon, ❤
