    One of my favorite small details about this case is that Franziska got shot in the same shoulder as her father and reacted differently in the best way. It shows that she's not like her father in some of the best ways possible.

    Using the magatama in such a clever way to trick you into believe that your client is "innocent" was BRILLIANT! First you never expect your client to be the culprit (evil guy) because through both games all until this one case every single one of your client was absolutely 100% innocent. The way they gaslight you into believing he was innocent was incredible! Because he did not murder the victim himself, he sended an assassin after him so of course the Magatama wouldn't detect a lie because he didn't murder anyone HIMSELF! And then the emotional rollercoaster of needing to defend this bad evil villain while fearing for Maya's safety! What a rollercoaster of emotions!

    Miles didn't know about the situation with Maya, which implies that he's indeed sharp enough to understand that this case has more than meets the eye and he's willing to go along with Phoenix's bullshit to see where it goes, because for the first half of the case a lot of Phoenix's actions has been out of character. This trial is also why I love Fransizka as a character!
    A lot of people might say that it's kind of a cop out to have her be revealed as a "not that bad" person, but the truth of her breakdown is a lot heavier and sadder really.
    Considering she's been in her father's shadow all her career up until going against Phoenix, when she in turn starts living in Miles's shadow she just can't catch a break!
    At the begining all she's painted as is nothing but a copy of her dad, then she follows Miles's path completely which also frustrates her as she is not allowed by a single character to be her own person.
    And then at the end when she's done with it all, Miles the only family she has left and the one person she's always looked up to telling her that he's ready to abandon her if she gives up.
    What else does she have left but to cry her eyes out, her whole breakdown gives the message of "I never expected this to be so hard". I think all she ever really wanted was to stand in court side by side with Miles as equals, which they kinda do in the 3rd game i guess?
    I do wish there was more of her tho, I know she's present in Edgeworth's games but an apearance in the mainline games where we get to see her become her as her own person would be amazing for her character!

    • @MrLegendofLP
      @MrLegendofLP 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      I disagree with Edgeworth’s “this is where we part ways” being a “I’m ready to abandon you again.” It’s him saying “I will respect your decision to stop prosecuting if that’s what you want, but I will continue being a prosecutor.” Remember, he says “if you will no longer walk the prosecutor’s path, then this is where we part ways.” That’s not Edgeworth abandoning Franny. I mean he chased after her to have this conversation. It’s him giving her autonomy, giving her the space to be her own person. At least, that’s my interpretation.

      Great Ace Attorney's greatest strength is that it brought new mechanics to a trial system that had been in desperate need of them for years. It's a breath of fresh air long time fans, and an enthralling Adventure for newcomers, but it's not so far ahead of the other games quality wise that the older entries become unpleasant by comparison. It's still more or less written by the same people, after all.

    I think what's really fun about JFA is how unlike other ace attorney games there isn't a big grand mystery tying the whole game together, like sure there's the esgeworth and franziska sutff but they aren't really the same in the my eyes as like The DL-6 incident and Edgeworth's past and such. Really this game's main plot is more thematic, raising the question "what does being a lawyer mean to phoenix, and what extremes can be used to push him past his moral limits, to make him do things that make him quesiton his role".
    THis is foreshadowed in the first case too, where Willington outwards tells phoenix "You don't even know who you are". Sure yeah its referencing the amensia thing but it also foreshadows the thematic throughline of the game, in my opinion.
    Adding to this is phoenix ending up in situations where it looks really bad for his clients, or have him face foes who aren't screen chewing villains. Dr Grey is a very morally ambigious victim, and Mimi Miney is not the nastiest villain and its unclear which of the two had done wrong in the first palce prior to the murder. WHile a good guy at heart Max Galactica is a snobby jerk with a very scummy and weird crush, and Acro is outright the msot sympathetic murderer in the game but whose grudge can be seen as petty and foolish despite that. granted my reasoning here is a stretch but i do think there's somethign here about the cases planting seeds of doubt in phoenix's ability, especially now that he has a reliance on a magical power to literally see lies.
    and now we get this case, a case that not only answers what happened to edgeworth but also has phoenix face such an extreme situation he does things he normally wouldn't do because no all he cna think of is to win, ironically becoming more like what he accused prosecutors of being in his anger against edgeworth. He accuses an innocent woman of a crime she didn't commit, questions the evidence for no reason (though he does accidentally uncover some truths like the fake note) and tries his best to 'prove' matt engarde 'innocent'.
    For once the useless choices do matter cause they add to this, either having phoenix figure out clever solutions (asking franziska for help in finding gumshoe) or to answer the question the game posited: "what does being a lawyer mean to phoenix wright?". SO the final choices are pivotal cause they are the answer. If you decided that winning the case is more improtant than the truth and ensuring engarde is punished for his crimes, you choose "not guilty". If you decide all that matetrs is making sure the truth is known and the guilty party faces justice, you go with "guilty". It's jsut a really cool plotline.
    (also i always pikc "guilty", it feels more true to phoenix and his ideals and its really satisfying to see pheonix grin and smugly say "sorry, I can't defend an OBVIOUSLY guilty client" and then yous ee matt engard scream "guilty!?!?!" in disbelief at, despite everything he did, he still goes to jail and is still declared guilty)

  • @colt1903
    @colt1903 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Yeah... This case is the stuff of my dreams, and my nightmares. There's so much that these games prime you to not expect right? Things like "No one ever pleads the fifth" and "Your client is always Not Guilty" that are sort of just these few little rules of this world we're made to take for granted.
    The Matt Engarde Case set out with a mission to use the things we take for granted against us, and it was done EXPERTLY.
    This case is hands down the best stand alone case in the series. A lot of the best cases in this series are built on top of past cases in that same game. Case and Point, the final case of the 3rd game in the trilogy. The Matt Engarde case though... There's none of that, or if there is it's either strikingly little, or I've forgotten. Which the latter, if true, just goes to show how powerful the case is as a stand alone.
    If not for how much I love Godot as a prosecutor and character, on top of just how perfect the last case of the third game is as an ending to the trilogy itself... Yeah, if not for those elements I'd genuinely argue that this should have been the last case of the trilogy. That's how good this case is.😂

    This case is very arguably the best case in the entire series. Personally, my favorite game in the Ace Attorney series is the third game, and in some ways my favorite case of the series is the final case in that game, in large part because of the way you build up to it throughout that game and even the previous games. It's a fitting way to end the Phoenix Wright trilogy. Of course I still completely understand anyone who prefers the final case from Justice for All. (That being said, I haven't played the second Investigations game, or anything Great Ace Attorney, or Spirit of Justice. So this doesn't take those into account.)
    It's also kind of funny, back when I first played the Ace Attorney games I wasn't interested in m/m ships and never paid attention to them and SOMEHOW missed the BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS evidence that is the Phoenix/Miles ship. Experiencing the series again through Crystal or the Game Grumps I'm left wondering how younger me could have possibly failed to see the romantic tension between them.
    And, as a final personal opinion, while all the Ace Attorney game are amazing, I firmly maintain that Shu Takumi's greatest game is Ghost Trick. I can honestly say that I have never encountered another video game story as good and told as well as that one.

    The experience of playing this case was one of the most stressful experiences in any game I’ve ever played, and it’s in a visual novel. The feeling of helplessness induced when it turns out that your client is guilty and all you can do is buy time until Maya is found is something many games strive to achieve but never do. The character development is top-notch, too, and really does add a ton of depth to the cast. Justice for All may be a mixed bag of a game as a whole, but the final case really is the perfect conclusion for the second installment in the trilogy and brings a lot of meaning to the game’s name.

    You know, I feel like this 2nd game reminded me a lot of Yakuza: Infinite Wealth. I fell in love with Ichiban and his story in Yakuza 7, but even though gameplay-wise 8 was SOOOOOOO much better, I felt the game was... serviceable. It wasn't bad, by any means, it just wasn't up to the standard (in terms of story) set by 7. It's like how everyone shits on Dark Souls 2, but that's in the context of Souls games. If we compare that shit to any EA or Ubisoft titles, Dark Souls 2 would be a pretty good game xD

  • @aidanmajor7269
    @aidanmajor7269 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This case is my favorite for a few reasons
    1: up to this point we learned over the whole game that Phoenix is suffering from depression he thinks Edgeworth has committed suicide and he thinks its because of himself for making Edgeworth think that he put dozens of innocent people in jail. He also had to run a law firm alone for a year while Maya was back home and he doesn't make much from it. And all of that comes out in this case because Maya is kidnapped and will be killed if he gets a guilty verdict but if he gets a not guilty a innocent person will go to jail so someones life will be over in someway no matter what he does.
    2: matt is the perfect villain. He's a genius, after all he is a Puppet Master, everyone in the case is under his finger even if they don't know, even Edgeworth is being controlled by him, after all if a guilty verdict is made Maya will die. But of course everything has a weakness and the weakness for genius is paranoia and matt isn't anything if not paranoid, after all it's him being paranoid that makes him think De Killer will betray him and that leads to him betraying De Killer and their contact becoming null and void.
    3: i feel like this case is what makes Phoenix a true ace attorney. Its the case where he realizes that being a lawyer doesn't mean winning all the time, it means finding the truth. And when both Maya and Adrian are in danger, one being killed if a guilty verdict is made, one going to jail if a not guilty verdict is made, he still doesn't give up no matter how much he may want to. He still pushes on to the end and finds a way to save them both and get matt a guilty verdict. Truly a ace attorney.

    From the first time I played this game on DS in middle school, something felt kind of off with this case. Now that I’m an adult and I’ve played through this case many times, I can finally articulate it: Juan Corrida shouldn’t have been lumped in with Matt Engarde, and he didn’t deserve to go out the way he did. I get that that’s kind of a hot take, so I’ll explain myself in the replies later, but I’m interested to see what other people think.

    • @Coolbutrude-yx8qu
      @Coolbutrude-yx8qu 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      I kind of agree with you but at the same time I don’t. Matt absolutely went to a further extreme than Juan and Juan didn’t deserve to die, because human life is still a very precious thing. But the truth is that Juan cared more about his rivalry with Matt than anything else. He prioritized it over the woman he supposedly loved, cancelling their engagement the moment he hears that she is simply Matt’s leftovers. And then, when Celeste kill’s herself, he doesn’t come clean about anything. He instead forges a suicide note to use against Matt, once again not seeing Celeste as a person whom he loved, but instead as a tool for his own victory. Matt may be worse for resorting to murder and kidnapping, but it would be wrong to ignore the things that Juan has done as well.

    • @andrewfox5663
      @andrewfox5663 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Coolbutrude I’ve tried to type out my essay of an explanation on my phone three times now, and each time I bump something and have to start all over😡😡😡 so I’m going to do this in pieces.
      First, the situation with Celeste, Matt, and Juan has always been too vague for my liking. What exactly did Matt “confess” to Juan? With how sadistic Matt is shown to be in this case, I feel like it’s likely that it was something worse than Celeste just being “Matt’s leftovers.” What did Juan say to Celeste when he called off the engagement? As far as I remember, we never get the specifics on that, so it’s hard to know exactly how wrong he was in that scenario.

    • @andrewfox5663
      @andrewfox5663 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Coolbutrude
      Second, every source we have for the events leading up to, during, and after the suicide are either incomplete or comes from an unreliable narrator. Oldbag lives Juan way too much to lay any kind of blame on him, Powers’ info is 100% sourced from gossip, and all the police/Edgeworth knows for sure is that Juan was first to find the body and might’ve hid her suicide note (assuming she wrote one at all). Adrian is our biggest source of information about this whole affair. Most importantly, she’s the only source we have as to why Juan did what he did, and between her emotional attachment to Celeste and her own mental instability in relation to Celeste, I’m just not comfortable taking everything she says at face value (Admittedly, a good chunk of this is probably bias from my own lived experience. I’ve had and seen relationships and friendships get really nasty because people blindly trusted the word of the person who was the most “hurt” in the situation).

    • @andrewfox5663
      @andrewfox5663 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Collbutrude
      Third, it rubs me the wrong way that, as far as I can tell, the only reason Adrian’s underhandedness and wrongdoing is looked on with understanding (to the point that we see her out of jail, living her best life, less than a year after this case) and Juan’s wrongdoing isn’t, is because Adrian is alive to tell us that her actions were done to defend Celeste’s dignity in death and/or to avenge her death, and Juan isn’t alive to explain himself at all. If you lay out Juan and Adrian’s actions side by side, they’re barely different. They both took advantage of someone’s death to get back at someone they thought deserved it by forging evidence at the scene of their death. If anything, Adrian’s is worse because she desecrated the corpse of the victim she found. They both conspired to ruin Matt’s career at the conference after the award ceremony, with Adrian doing the bulk of the work. If Adrian hadn’t asserted to Phoenix that Juan was only doing this for his own satisfaction, I feel like most players would assume he was doing it, at least in part, to avenge Celeste’s suicide. Hell, when the fake suicide note is read in court, and it says that Matt ruining her happiness twice is the reason Celeste killed herself, Adrian doesn’t raise a single objection to that narrative. She, the woman who hates Juan more than anyone else, believes that Celeste didn’t blame him.
      That’s really the biggest one for me. He never gets the benefit of the doubt about his motives because the only person available to speak on his motives hates his guts. (Again, something that hits kinda close to home for me.)
