    It would be so fun having units on the boats setting up bridges between enemy ones, infiltrating, stuff like that would make a great narrative

    For the supports - check with the company whether their stls are designed to print without support. Even if it does need supports, I tend to use CURA (Ultimaker) and they have this neat little setting for "tree supports". The supports peel off or clip off easily - particularly for 28mm miniatures (and smaller). I don't know if other slicers offer similar options as I only have expedience with Cura. But tree supports have made minis easier, and more viable after support removal - no more loss of limbs, weapons, or supports wrapped tightly to the leg that cannot be removed. Printable Scenery have a range of good ships that fit the Elven, Human aesthetic (amongst others) as well as a big ship that matches Dark Elves if you haven't checked them out already.
    Great video btw - more involvement from the team in different aspects is also very cool as evidenced by Jenn's project. adds additional perspective and creates opportunity for discussion on video.

    Yo-ho, me hearties! Shiver me timbers! Jen's boat is a great use of the Throne of Blood, I think that the kit usually looks a bit weird on its little wheels.
    Getting some water on your fingers when smoothing out the milliput on the Orc Ship, makes it easier to buff in to shape.
    The Orc Ship in the storm looks great, and gave me a real KLF, "America: What Time is Love", vibe (I realize that you might have to ask your parents, or grandparents about that reference).

    lol, got to love having a support system where just nudging the supports breaks them off as cleanly as you can hope for without a dissolvable filament.
    pro tip if you want to use fmd for things that need craploads of support, get a 2 nozzle printer and load one with dissolvable filament, its the newar idiot proof method.

    • @alidan
      @alidan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      when using a dremel, you either want toothed saw blades, and relatively large toothed ones at a slow speed, or you want wood carving tools (the bits with burrs and crap on balls cones or cylinders), again at slow speeds, fast will melt the crap unless you want to clean the tools often.

    Dave, I think some others already said it, but tree supports might help you. That said, those supports were waaaaay too close to the model, you can tweak all that to reduce the damage and make them easier to remove. Also, not 100% sure that model required supports at all. Even the windows, with how small they are, could've been printed without supports without major issues. Buuuut it's only a hunch based on what I'm seeing in the video, I might be totally wrong about that.

    FYI, you only really need supports if an overhang is greater than 45 degrees, sticks out more than about half a centimeter, or is a bridge to something. Supporting anything else is, 95% of the time, a waste of plastic and cumbersome.

    Let's be real: between ground combat, aerial fights and interstellar conflicts that are definitely cool, naval battles has always been lacking by GW.

    I've been FDM printing for a good few years now, so maybe I can offer you some tips.
    Settings are crucial when it comes to mechanical fits on FDM parts. Not only do you need to calibrate for single or multiple axis shrinkage, but you need to make sure your nozzle's geometry is compensated for. A 0.4mm nozzle, by default, means that 0.2mm of the extrusion sits outside the exact tracking line of the print head and 0.2mm sits inside. You can compensate for this by using a 0.2mm nozzle offset in your slicer settings, and using an additional inner hole diameter offset can help to ensure a tiny bit of extra space for adhesives even if you simply model your parts to be perfect press fits. You can also play around with the order of operations to reduce the amount of necessary support material by making the walls print from the inside out. Lastly, a dense interface with a double or triple layer height air gap between support and model can be useful to aid in removal of supports and reduction of support scarring, while breaking your supports into chunks can make the removal process much more manageable.
    That said, I think the end result of your work looks fantastic and I especially like how you were able to make the support scars just look like weathering and damage. That base coat on the wood really brought it to life in a big hurry.

    • @the_guitarcade
      @the_guitarcade 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The US Navy considers a watercraft to be a ship when the part above the waterline leans away from turns and a boat when the part above the waterline leans toward turns. Historically, a ship had 3 or more square rigged masts, and a boat was anything smaller than that, making all three of these boats. In the modern age, the distinctions are much less clear, and will differ culturally, legally, and from case to case. While the proportions more closely resemble a ship than a boat on 2 of the 3, subjectively, in my opinion, I would not assert that any of them are ships rather than boats.
