With OG stalker you wil definitely think its jank, and then you'll hear a new sound and you'll be completely immersed and before you know it you're sitting by the campfire with some other stalkers and then following them on their little adventure when they get up. What I love about the game besides the atmosphere is that there are multiple endings and 1 set of endings you can only begin to get when you talk to a particular person and start their quest towards the start of the game and the game does not tell you. Shadow of Chornobyl is definitely favourite of the OG trilogy. Stalker is the video game series where it definitely made me feel something, and makes me want to come back time and time again. Its like you become part of the zone.

As nbandit said, try it with SRP, or I suggest Arsenal Overhaul Redux. It's less vanilla because of all the added weapons and slight changes, but it comes with SRP 1.1.3. So you still can use that as well as its optional changes if you don't fudge up the changes from AOR. This is all assuming you're playing on PC and not Xbox, though
Don't forget that old games support mods. The most important thing that is outdated is the look and animation of hands and weapons. Install Gunslinger or any analog and the game will be much better.

One: This is one of those games that handicaps shotguns by making them throw loose patterns when you shoot from the hip. And two: Armor protects mostly from blunt projectiles. Buckshot pellets, like pistol slugs, are blunt. Slugs and darts were nerfed for some reason (or maybe no reason at all). Some mods make slugs and darts worth using.
I also must have the Chernobyl flavour of Autism. This shit is fire when I'm not inexplicably being mobbed by 5 bloodsuckers. I think I ruined my playthrough by playing the main story too fast. Everyone hates me.
i preferred STALKER when it was underground. Don't play it, just forget it exists and go play your fortnite or whatever. Zoomers getting into STALKER is what ruined it with garbage like GAMMA

It could be that one game that allows people to embrace a challenge and appreciate something that doesn’t always give you instant gratification. Clear Sky is great with the fan patch. Also worth checking out Anomaly or one of the Anomaly-based mods/modpacks like Gamma, it's a whole new game
