    VERY well done. As a video producer, I must say your shots were great, steady and you went right to the topic. You didn't try to be funny, add a lot of fluff, or other useless banter. You taught me a lot about the water heater, and I solved my "no light" problem thanks to you. I was getting the clicking of the sparker, but no ignition, so I was using my torch to light the heater when propane was needed. The problem was the gap between the sparker and the grounding rod. Also cleaned the water deposits off the screw and wind adjustment slide and it's igniting every time now with no hassle. I'd give you an A in my class, but I wouldn't be a good journalist or English professor if I didn't remind you not to use the word "basically." Also a good tip is, even though you may be using electricity all the time, use the LP option about once a month just to make sure all is clean and working. Keep up your good work and educational tips.

    Because of your thorough and well put together video I was able to troubleshoot why my (propane) water heater ignited but then stopped every time I attempted to start it. This is a 26 year old water heater. I went through every step you outlined. I checked the wires for conductivity and discovered a few wires were corroded and the spade connectors weren't tight. I checked the overheat safety for continuity. I checked the burner pipe for blockage and corrosion. There was lots of rust. I cleaned the orifice with carburetor cleaner. I checked the igniter gap. I checked that the round plate in the burner tube was centered. I re-adjusted the flame so it burned quiet and blue. I actually have a new water heater that I can replace it with but the work involved is too much right now. I'm at the tale end of a 2 month restoration on this motorhome and I'm exhausted. You saved me a lot of work. This rig was rarely used and this water heater should have a few good years left in it. Many thanks!!!

    I have an Attwood GE16EXT combo GAS/Electric water heater. I believe there is a design problem on the controller board that causes infant mortality (some might call it a retroactive abortion) of the PCB's transistor that sends 12VDC to energize the Relay mounted behind the heater that sends 120VAC to the heating element. I have had to replace the potted controller TWICE in a 3-year period because the yellow wire was not getting energized. Otherwise, a $0.25 transistor is all that would be necessary. The Propane portion of the heater was working. It is good engineering practice to add a DIODE (1N4001) to clamp the back EMF produced when the relay is deenergized. I soldered the Cathode to the yellow wire and the Anode to the Green wire in position #6 of the connector. This way the new controller's transistor will not be damaged in the future. The PCB's relay that sends power to the Gas Valve may very well have a similar issue but there is no way to add a protection diode due to the potting compound.

    This was very well done. We have the same situation of heater not staying lit. Went through your steps cleaning, replaced thermofuse and igniter. It still doesn't stay lit. 3 lighting cycles. No continuous lighting. Ugh. 😢 next step?

      Hi, obviously I can't diagnose a problem here however if you have done all the testing in the video you may have an issue with the control board. Check out this video th-cam.com/video/wgk-vaFD4kg/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you very much for this walkthrough. One additional thing I noticed on my Atwood fix, while the sparker bases were intact the rods themselves had some carbon buildup. I gave them a light sanding as well as the connector tabs and adjusted the sparker gap to the proper measurement. As per your advise I carefully removed the gas nozzle tip and gave it all some compressed air. It’s been very dry here. Reassembled and it fired right up. Sweet blue flame. And adjusted the the air to gas window to a gentle roar. 👍🏼

    Lou to the rescue. I'm not so upset after finding this video. If the wire going to the sparker hadn't broke while cleaning I'd not have seen this. Excellent 👍.
    I don't have a new part on hand . Can the wire be reconnected on the electronic side

      I would not try to patch the wire. I would purchase a new one. There are links to many of the items in the description box.

    This popped up in my recommended after I tried to Google more troubleshooting info for ours. We spent our first weekend in our new (to us) trailer and the water heater would work on both electric and gas, but it was overheating and tripping off on a fault.
    Once I got back on Tuesday with my tools I found that it was overheating to 180°F, tripping the ECO, which I assume causes the board to lock out and send a fault. The main TSTAT was still closed and calling for heat. It had good contact to the tank, I went back and replaced it last night. The trailer is being used for a rental this weekend so I hope they don't have any issues. It's a decent heater

      @RVHabit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was to guess without running tests I would have done what you did and replace the thermostat. Hopefully that corrects the problem.

    Many thanks for making this informative and helpful video. We wish we had seen this before we did a couple of other things. 😆Now, we suspect it was simply a clogged orifice all along. Before we got to that though, we tried a new motherboard and we ordered a new gas valve. After we put that on, we checked the orifice and it was completely clogged! We are sharing your video link so others can be informed and avoid our mistakes.

After I do a routine flush my HH will light then shut off 3 times or a few sets of 3 try. then, I turn the switch off, say a prayer, and it starts for good again. It's bee off and on like this for over a year. I will do all the servicing you menton here, I am sure it will help !!

    I just have to say here at 2:36s this is the most brilliant explanation I have ever heard! Bravo. I'm troubleshooting now suddenly no hot water gas nor electric. Similar looking Atwood Unit. See if I can learn something here. Hope so cause getting cold outside. Unlike most videos which are confusing guesswork, this so crystal clearly explained. Man, where can I make a donation. Bravo! Surprisingly I got the same unit on my "Yellow Submarine" haha! Which kind of sand paper to use for cleaning up those rusty points?

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James, thank you very much. I feel once you understand how something works you will have better success in diagnosing any problems. As for sandpaper you really can use any common sandpaper grit. I used 220. If you have no electric or gas make sure the unit is getting power to the control board. If it is getting power you check power after the board. If you have the same unit as mine, it is reported that Atwood did have some bad boards back around 2016. The board says *Zhongding* on the side. I have this board and plan to change it out as a precaution. Good luck.
