Thanks for making this video! You had some good tips. I am going to be tackling my first valve replacement soon, and was not born with the handy-man genes. Neither were a couple other guys who made videos of their jobs, and man, did they make a mess! Yours was clear, with good advice on being prepared for fluid coming out of the cylinder and how to get that high-pressure hose on and off. Wish me luck! I hope I have all the tools I need.

Thanks so much for taking the time to make the video. I may tackle this myself and this looks exactly like mine. What ball park price did that control valve cost? Mine is starting to squirt dirty looking fluid at the detent valve connection, especially in reverse when I push the handle into the auto return position.. So I was thinking just changing that, but you had mentioned in the video the cost was too close to replacing the whole thing. Thanks again!!! (at the end of my detent cap: 19693c (Energy) 37 04)..
Glad you found the video useful. I think I paid around $130 for the new valve. Sounds like you have bad o-rings on the spool valve. If that's the only problem, then a rebuild kit may be cheaper. But, you have to completely disassemble the valve for that. So I would call Energy Mfg directly and ask them.

Also, if you're seeing dirty oil, it may be time to change your hydraulic oil and filter.

If you look on the cap that covers the detent spring it should say Energy. There's also a part number on that cap that you'll need when you call. Thanks for watching!

I'm back ! If you want to get rid of the noise, take off the muffler and braze a metal flex hose to a plate [ hand made ] and mount it where the muffler was. wire on the flex hose in a jug of water. Ta da no noise!
Interesting idea. Never considered a metal flex pipe. It does need a new muffler.
@@Millstone_Firewood My uncle brazed a flex pipe [ I think its called electircal flex pipe ] on his chainsaw and wired a gallon bleach onto the saws handle bar half full of water and the only noise was the chain chewing on the wood. Also you can adjust how fast or slow it works , but cant say where on valve to ajust. There was or is a company called Northern Hydrolics that has a page that tells you what HP motor, cylinder and pump go together. Iv'e seen V 8 motors hooked up to an 8 inch cylinder and i laughed as it was so over powered. You might ask someone who knows about those fittings, as O'm pretty sure you don't use tape on them.
I built my splitter so the table was waist high with a 3 foot table to sit wood on,. I wielded a 3/4 inch piece of angle iron around the edges to keep the wood from rattling off the table. I put the chunk of wood on the table and split it , then pushed half to one side while I split the other half. Not having to pick up anything as it stayed on the table. I built foot peddles so i could use both hands while splitting, once finished with the round of wood , i stepped on the down peddle and reached over and grabbed another round of wood, That is where the ''retern to center ''comes in handy.

Thank you for the information. I actually do understand hydraulic fittings since I work with them frequently. My go-to product is a thread sealant called Gasoila. Good stuff. But yes, you can use tape on the NPT threads as long as you do it properly. My splitter operates either horizontally or vertically. I mostly use it in the vertical position since now I only use it for the occasional log that's too big for the Cord King. That way I don't have to lift the logs. You should post a video of your splitter. Sounds interesting.
What is the model number for that detention valve? Have same machine 25 yrs old now will not pop out when reverse stroke finishes
If you look on the detent cap, the part number should be there. You might have to remove some paint to see it . If it's not there, just give Energy Mfg a call. They can tell you what you need for your machine. And this is assuming the valve you have is made by Energy. It should say on the cap.

Why not stand it up to make it easier to start the pressure hose?
I suppose I could have but the ram may have started to drop and leak out more oil. It wasn't really very difficult once I moved the camera out of the way. Thanks for watching.
Is your fluid filter NAPA? Can i have the number of it
Hello. Yes, the filter is a NAPA 1551. However, the filter for your splitter MUST match the filter housing. It could have different threads or a different diameter gasket. It's best if you can cross reference the original filter. Your local NAPA store should be able to do that. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

never...never use tape on hydraulics. it will migrate on you.
Thank you for your comment. Just to be clear, you NEVER use teflon tape on JIC or O-Ring hydraulic fittings. Nor do you put any type of thread sealant on those fittings. It is okay to use teflon tape on hydraulic NPT fittings as long as the tape is wound in the proper direction (clockwise). Please correct me if you think I'm wrong. Not sure what you mean by migrate. If you put the tape on incorrectly, yes it can definitely get into the system.
You should have replaced that control with a'' return to center'' control . it saves you a''movenent''.
Thanks for the comment. I am by no means a hydraulic system expert. Can you explain what you mean? As it stands, the valve operates the cylinder exactly as designed. When I push the handle to the return position, once the cylinder bottoms out, the valve returns to the center position automatically. I don't know what else would be necessary. Thanks.
