I didn't futz around with mine, I just got a big serrated knife and sawed it in half. Some of the roots got chopped, but it seems to have even helped it when I repotted. They are both thriving.

Ps, don’t be afraid to cut a portion of the roots off. It will fit more snuggly in the pot and will give the plant more growing room. It doesn’t harm it in anyway, it’s just like a little trim at the hairdressers for them! Let me know if you managed to propagate those 2 leaves that came off. Your gals in the same boat 🙋🏼♀️😆
I stuck the extra leaves in a stemless champagne glass to water proprogate them. Only 1 of them actually started growing roots. (The new leaf) But it made for a super cute look in my kitchen and the leaves that didn't root still lived for about a month in just the water. Don't forget there is still beauty in death sometimes.
Rattlesnake plant is on my wish list. We'll see who survived the winter and how much room I have in the spring UNLESS I find one next month at a plant sale,😁
The leaf you are throwing away. You shouldve stuck it in the dirt, maybe it'll catch. I ended accidentally pull the baby out as well but no roots... I'm gonna cry! I'm telling it, that it will grow! Thanks for the video it was a lot of help!

Question, I have a mosaica network calathea I need to repot/separate. you think it would be the same process? I'm assuming so. Mine was just as root bound as yours but with more baby bulbs. It actually started looking like it was rising out of the pot 🙀 I just massaged the bottom until the roots loosened, pulled off the baby bulbs and increased the pot size. I put the baby bulbs in their own pots and I'm hoping they'll grow. How is Reggie and Reggie Jr. doing now?
I tried to divide mines last night but the stems came off without roots. I’ve popped the stems with leaves back in the soil, dya think they’ll grow roots or do I need to have roots on the actual stem for them to grow? I’m so sad 😢 Mines is like double the size and height of yours and it’s my fav of all my calatheas. I really need those leaves ya know 🤣🤣
I made this video 10 months ago, and RJ (Reggie Jr.) Is still alive! I would love to tell you that he flourished and thrived but the truth is he went into shock for awhile so just froze in time for months. But as time passes he grows a new leaf every now and then but then usually one will die off the same time so he pretty much looks the exact same. He's small and cute and i love him so, since he came from one of my very first plants. I recommend being more gentle on the separation than i was but as i mentioned i was just kinda winging it. Lol.
Mine probably looks as rootbound as yours, the pot is getting way too small for it. I also want to keep using the same pot so I think I will divide it like you did

How often do you repot him? I bought one in a 4in pot.. moved him into a 5in pot.. he's not pushing out any new leaves. So, I'm wondering if I need a larger pot??
Look for signs that they're ready to be repotted. Such as roots coming out of the drainage holes or even above the top soil. If new growth is pushing out and struggling. Or even pot breaking. I had one bird of paradise crack open its nursery pot from overgrowth. Try to repot is spring to have an easier transition for the plant since that usually when they're the happiest.
He lives in the house with me and i have a humidifier next to it and it's closely surrounded by other calatheas so they can help create a humid atmosphere for each other.

Reggie did great but Reggie Jr aka RJ died about a year later. But I'm pretty sure it's because I put him on a book shelf without adequate light.
