  • Hi everyone,
    My name is Tracy and I garden in Zone 4/5 in Toronto, Canada. I hope you are all doing well & keeping safe. This is my 1st video of 2021. I want to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy, healthy and safe new year.
    You are watching my latest video on Calathea Vittata & Lancifolia: Propagation, Planting and Care filmed on January 2, 2021 (1st video of the year). In this video, I will share with you how I propagate new Calathea plants by division and cuttings as well as how I care for them after planting.
    I hope this video brings you some joy and inspiration to start making some more of your favourite Calathea plants in your homes. Now that you know how "easy" it is to care for Calathea plants, perhaps it will inspire you to buy a new plant to enjoy it in your own homes (if you don't have one already). Thank you so kindly for taking some of your precious time to watch my video. Take care & stay safe!
    Happy (in-door) gardening & see you next time!

    The Calathea plants are beautiful. I was on the edge of my seat watching you take apart the first plant. The second one seemed to come apart much easier. Free plants are the best! I love all the white containers.

      The Rattlesnake plant was a little more rooted in than the Vitatta...so I was trying to be very gentle with it. Thank you for watching Linda....I love white pots as they go easily with any decor.

      @@TracysHomeGarden I love the different colored pots also, however, I agree that the white goes with any decor. I started incorporating white and terra cotta pots outdoors.

      The terra cotta ages beautiful but they need to be stored in warm location because of our winter and I don’t have space to store them. 😟. As for indoors, I can’t seem to be able to succeed with incorporating them into my interior....yet...still trying to figure it out.

    I have a Calatheas plant with a LOT of small egg shaped balls (Rhizomes) attached to the roots that I'm trying to grow in fish bowl with water. Is this okay or will it harm (drown) the plant since those little balls already store water? HELP! lol

    • @TracysHomeGarden
      @TracysHomeGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeannie,
      Calatheas are one of the plants that can root in water and I have seen them sold like that. I would think it would be okay as long as you feed them the nutrients they need as there is no “soil” where they could get nutrients from.

  • @cefcat5733
    @cefcat5733 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does a Calethea like to be potbound? The Ornata I just bought is full of roots, coming out of the bottom. I wanted to split it in two. Would it like it better in a terrarium to achieve the humidity? Nice video.

    • @TracysHomeGarden
      @TracysHomeGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you should definitely divide it into two plants now. In our climate, spring is high in moisture and humidity and so they will definitely rebound much quicker than doing so in the winter when the humidity is too low. Terrarium would definitely be great for them...as I’m constantly spraying them with water to keep them humid in our dried home.
      Ps. Try to just gently tease the roots into two parts and not get overly “greedy” like I did and split it into 4. ☺️😬 Although my propagated calatheas are starting to take off now...it literally took them almost 4 months to do so and recoup.
      Happy propagating!

      @@TracysHomeGarden Thanks. Mine was crazy expensive too and I'm aware that it is not the easiest houseplant to own. It's a difficult project for me.

    • @TracysHomeGarden
      @TracysHomeGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cefcat5733 I did kill a few calatheas in my life time. Aside from their requirement for high humidity (60%+), I think they are not that bad. The only problem...that makes it hard for me is our house has relatively "low" humidity especially during winter...so I have to mist them twice a day. So if you put them in a terrarium...where humidity is high...I think you will be giving them a great start. All the best!

    • @cefcat5733

      Scrape the top 1” of soil and throw away...make sure you wear gloves to prevent spreading to other surfaces. Replace the new soil on the plant. Then use the soap in the link above to spray on the plant and soil. Don’t have to spray too much....a few sprays is all you need. Hope that helps.
