  • Post Office scandal campaigner Alan Bates has been recognised by Computer Weekly as the most influential person in UK technology in 2024. In this video, Bates accepts his award and reflects on what IT leaders should learn from his experiences in exposing flaws in the Horizon IT system that led to the most widespread miscarriage of justice in British legal history

Yes, Computer Weekly should give itself an award for its long long long time efforts in this case.

I would like to see Royal Mail issue a commemorative postage stamp with Sir Alan’s image on it. Those who were at fault in the Post Office, Fujitsu and outside Law firms, will then have to lick Sir Alan’s stamps whenever they have to post a letter.
Sir Alan is so right about what he says and it is vitally important that those responsible are not only held to account but need to receive suitably long prison sentences. For we have seen repeatedly, how fines levelled at companies are just treated by such companies as another cost-of-doing-business, allowing managers to continue bad behaviour whilst still collecting obscenely high bonuses, which is no deterrent at all. This has to stop! As we have seen in this inquiry, that white-collar-crimes are far from victimless and can have tragic consequences.
    Well done Sir Alan.

Sir Alan Bates is an absolute legend along with all the other dignified subpostmasters and mistresses. Hope to see more honours and accolades to all of them. And jail time for those who did them so much harm and misery.

We need more honourable people like Sir Alan in public life. Well done Sir....I know you will not give up until your mission is completed and you and all your compatriots receive the redress and compensation you are entitled to. Long may you succeed!

What an incredible saga this has been and continues to be. It’s so wonderful that people of integrity, of whom Sir Alan Bates is the epitome, have, in this case, in the end, prevailed over those without integrity.

Those who have said we need more people like this wonderful gentleman are absolutely right, but Heaven knows where we would find them. He is a hero of our time, when not only the wronged post office sub postmasters and mistresses needed him, but the whole country.

Sir Alan is a man of great integrity and courage and those that have treated sub post masters like guilty people just to protect their company, should and will be prosecuted. That’s the tenacity of Sir Alan . Fantastic

Been watching the inquiry on TH-cam. Unbelievable how at last Jason Beer the barrister and his team are now grilling those responsible for this appalling scandal. It couldn’t have happened without you Sir.

Sir Alan, me going around my chores with the phone/you tube/live PO enquiry📻...rewind if i have to. I was amazed shocked at the injustice before the ITV drama and could not understand why something so bad was not getting the NOISE🔊📢 it deserved. So pleased that it has finally made us all hear the truth and let the vibrations penetrate into the walls of the justice system and may some of these sewer rats serve some time in HMP. I wish peace and serenity moving forward for all the sub-postmasters and mistresses.

Congratulations Sir Alan, You really are an inspiration to everyone who has watched the truth be exposed in this appalling Post Office scandal. Your dignity and determination over many years to raise awareness and strive for justice for all the victims has been truly admirable. Hopefully, the recognition and awards will help by maintaining the public focus until proper compensation is awarded for all the Sub-Postmasters 👏👏

I've watched a great deal of the inquiry and think that Mr Beer, Mr Stein, Mr Henry, Miss Page, Mr Maloney and ALL the others have been examples of the very best of the best ! On the other hand every single person who has appeared and attempted to defend the prosecutions have been examples of the worst of the worst, liars and total incompetents unworthy of their titles and an embarrassment to themselves, their employers, the government and the country !

It seems that the UK is failing in holding those responsible to account. So many scandals (water, blood, flammable insulation, etc, the list goes on. Who's paid the price so far? The victims.

Ah! But unfortunately Sir Alan, people in these organisations have no moral compass which is why they can do their jobs without guilt. Alas i fear this behavior is a rotton core of many, many organisations. Huge thanks to you and all the other brave sub postmasters who have come forward to expose these appalling people. I doubt the perpetrators of this scandal will ever lose any sleep over their crimes against their fellow man. They are not built that way. I sincerely hope that all the victims will get adequate compensation as soon as possible and that payment is not burried in red tape.

The most frightening thing that is coming out of this is the sheer bumbling, unfeeling incompetence at every level in the PO and Fujitsu managements from top to near bottom. The legal representatives in the PO in particular have been nothing but ignorant and unintelligent. The quality of communication has been abysmal, full of managementspeak but little professional content.
Gof help Britain if other corporations are even remotely similar.
One thing needs doing right away - remove the power of prosecution from this bunch of unprincipled thugs.

It doesn’t seem to have occured that Fujitsu were stealing at Will. They could alter and steal money from postmasters. accounts all designed into their system. Some Fujitsu employees are very rich and will be long gone. They got too greedy but still got away with it because the post office were going along with it. Not bugs but designed. In. Who is looking at this. ??

Appreciative of his campaign but WHAT has that to do with him being influential in technology? His entire campaign was directed at one specific item of software and the organisation(s) creating it and using it. Makes no sense and, of course, gets instantly voted down.

There would be no Alan Bates situation if S Yorks police had processed perverted justice of Sept 7th 1998 after counsel declaration of embarrassment in 1999. CWU member unrepresented Vs Post Office counsel
