- In this video, I clean and lube my motorcycle chain, making sure to follow my manual and the 6 chain cleaning videos I watched beforehand. Because I'm a good bike owner now, dang it!

Slide a piece of cardboard in between the chain and tire to avoid over spray on to the tire. I use a large priority mail envelope at times. Chain lube is the last thing you want on a tire. I'd wash that off right away.

Yes. Better to wash it off with some dishwashing liquid.
Great job ! Just a tip, the chain guard comes off super easy (it’s just 2 screws with an Allen wrench), giving you much better access to your chain. Plus you can clean the guard easier too.
Please be careful while turning the wheel with your hand/rag wrapped around the chain. Never turn the wheel backwards as you can easily get your fingers and rag caught between the chain the the gear. It will pinch like a ##$%^&^%@

You are hearing the slight drag of the rear disc brake. Normal.
Cleaning it every 200 miles is one word on a street bike... OVERKILL
The gunk you see is your old chain lube not gunk. Chain lubes have same color “gunk” as what was coming off the “dirty” chain when heated.
I lube my chain about every 500 -750 miles (I just got back from a 3000 mile trip and lube the chain at the end of the day. About 725 miles each time) and have replaced very few chains. Also put a little more lube on the rollers that touch the sprocket as it will work it’s way to the outside of the chain.
One last thing. Best time to lube the chain? Right after coming home when it’s hot (expansion is your friend) I hardly clean it to the point you did. Maybe once a season on a road bike and a few times a season if it sees dirt.

Top effort Miss Doodle, but, your manual says "Drive chain ‑ lubricate Every 200 miles (300 km)" generally clean at 1000 km here in Australia. Nevertheless, you have inspired a dear female friend even more, who owns and rides a Thruxton to do more of the maintenance herself. How handy are us "Mere males" at encouragement!

This is true! But every experienced motorcycle rider and racer and technician will say 200 is overkill, 500-600 miles is better
Thanks for the video. My GF has a Triumph, so nice to see one with a lady doing the maintenance. Agree with some other commenters that taking the chain guard off makes it much easier. Also, I use plastic drop sheets (very inexpensive from Home Depot, etc.) to put under whole bike when doing chain maintenance, oil change, etc.
I lube my chain every 2nd fill up which is usually around 400mi. I lube earlier after heavy offroading or heavy rain
After lubing chain, take a fresh rag to the chain and try to get off all excess lube. The excess will attract dirt. Only need lube on inside and outside of chain, not middle, top, or bottom.
Good job for your first attempt the more you do it the easier it will get for you but one thing I would do to make it easier is remove the chain guard I have the same problem on my Kawasaki W800 where the exhaust is in the way.

I wish I had a stand. I had a 250cc cruiser - it didn't have a center stand and it was compatible with rear stands, and I didn't feel like forking over for a lift, so I clean my chain 8 links at a time, got up and rolled the bike to rotate the chain by another 8 links. Rinse and repeat. Then I lubed the chain. 8. Links. At. A. Time.

This was an informative, amusing and enjoyable video, Doodle. Informative because I never really knew the how-tos of chain cleaning, amusing because of your facial expressions and verbal responses, and enjoyable because, as Sportster owner,, I do not do any chain cleaning . . . ever! We have belts that last 100,000 miles without any servicing at all! "Every 200 miles?" Yowie!! I am WAY too lazy for that!

My Harley has an automatic chain lubing system oil leeks frum the primary case an slathers on the chain so we have too clean every 18 + 20 miles just kidding we clean it in the spring and in the fall

Now with my Triumph Street Triple R I use a pitbull rear stand with spools installed on the bike
To avoid getting chain lube and kerosene overspray all over your tyres, brake discs, etc.... things you don't want to contaminate, try using some cardboard placed 'L' shaped from the floor and up behind the chain and the whole area you're going to spray next time. Trust me you'll be shocked when you see how much you protect those areas and how much overspray accumulates on your card. You can always place some kitchen roll on the lower part that is in contact with the floor to soak up any excess.... makes cleaning up afterwards a breeze. Love your Bonneville and great to see you taking care of that great machine.
Many many years ago I traveled on a motorcycle. I put well over 100,000 miles on in about 2 years. For nearly a year of that time I had a girl on the back and we had the bike loaded with all of our stuff. Backpacks, sleeping bags, a tent, cooking gear etc. I may have lubed and adjusted the chain a few times but never cleaned it. I used to carry a master link and chain breaker on my keychain. I think every 200 miles is excessive at best, but you should check the tension at least. Have you learned how to change the oil and filter yourself?
By the way, here are a couple of my current bikes and I don't worry about the chain...why? Drive shaft!

I have a '15 Speedmaster- clean & lube 500-750 miles- I took the lid from a large storage bin and cut it to fit between chain and wheel AND you didn't clean the front sprocket ! Replaced chain & sprockets at 44k miles!!
Ideally the chain should be warm before applying lube. A 5 min ride will put sufficient heat into it.
Honestly, I've never gone by the mileage to lube my chain. Just check how hydrated your o-rings are/look. If I lube my chain and get caught in heavy rain, sometimes I'll have to oil after a single ride. That's why the mileage intervals aren't really relevant. Also I would recommend trying wax over oil. It still comes in a can, applies as liquid, and turns to wax so it doesn't fling everywhere and also it does not take very long to dry. I've heard one of the down sides is it may not withstand the elements as good as oil, but usually I avoid bad weather anyways. So the pros outweigh any cons for me. Seeing as this video is from a while ago, you've probably discovered this already lol

I just seen your video on progress update number 4 for the first time and I noticed that the comments for disabled.... When you spoke about dropping your bike and brake & clutch lever and all the difficulties that you had with that T100 it made me sad because I could see it in your face that you were sad. I really liked seeing you on that bike. I'm so glad you stuck with Triumph for your next bike.

When I rode bikes with chain driven, I use to spray the lube along the side of the rear sprocket near the chain as I rolled the wheel. This helps you guide your spray and not spray on your wheel. Just a thought.👍 I bought a HD Deluxe Softail for my 66 birthday, love all that chrome!

Heres A Tip....Mark your chain in one spot with Nail Polish that way you can keep track when spinning the tire.....What works best for me at cleaning a chain is a Grunge Brush & Goop Hand Cleaner (not the pumice kind) once scrubbed hit with the water hose use a rag to dry off the chain then hit the chain with some WD-40 to dissipate any remaining water then use a rag to rub the chain down then hit it with chain lube. Once you've lubed it, take it for a ride to warm up the chain and immediately on return lube it again that way it can get into the o/x-rings inside the links

Hey Doodle -- what brand/model of paddock stand are you using? It looks nice and slim and fits within the inconveniently placed mufflers (one of my misgivings about the Bonneville design). I'm looking at standard motorcycles and thinking about a Triumph ... I'm 6'2" so don't have your flat-footing problems. :)

Hi Doodle, a great video, sounds like brake squeal, normal, I like seeing you getting down and dirty and doing a thorough job. 200 miles seems too often although time should be factored in as well. The Bonneville is in a beautiful condition, a credit to you and together you make a happy team and we love you both for sharing with us.
Triumph manual says every 200 miles. I just reapply Super Bel Ray every 200 and clean every 500.

Hey really good stuff at Hourglass cycles, Belray chain wax and cleaner..no fling! Best stuff ever
Grunge brush also better than the spiral brush, I have a T 120
Also use a folded paper bag so you do not get it on your wheels!
Yep Belray is good stuff and there are some other chain wax's that are good too. Wax generally cleaner and adheres better.

Im terrible @ lubing my chain . I spray WD40 on it every once in a blue moon and thats it lol
WD40 is not a lubricant! It was designed for (W)ater (D)isplacement from electrical parts. Get a real oil!

wd40 is a terrible lube for chains. you're basically asking for even more gunk to get stuck on it.
And while laughing, go call a dealership for the cost of a new chain! Laughing will come to a complete halt!
