- Steampunk is fiction...or is it fact? Dr. Brandy Schillace takes the audience along a fascinating investigation into the true tales of Steampunk Science in her 2015 TEDxCLE talk.
Historian and author Dr. Schillace writes about intersections of medicine, history, and literature. She works as Research Associate and Public Engagement Fellow for the Dittrick Museum of Medical History and Managing Editor of Culture, Medicine and Psychiatry (an international journal of cross-cultural health research). Dr. Schillace’s co-edited collection, Unnatural Reproductions and the Monstrous(Cambria Press) provides an interdisciplinary look at birth, and her book Death’s Summer Coat (E&T UK, Pegasus US), explores the other end of life through cultural approaches to death and dying. Her current project explores the science behind steampunk, that clockwork genre of gadgets and gizmos (and Victorian debonair).

Hello! Just stopping by to drop a little trivia. I made the acid gun at 11:20. I called it the Acerbic Liquescence Atomizer and it was the only steampunk thing I ever made. I sold it on Etsy years ago through my shop called the Guild of Advantageous Development. Thank you again to Brandy for including it in her talk!
I got into steampunk thanks to Thomas and Friends and my love of steam locomotives passed down from my dad. Everytime I watch an episode of Thomas and Friends or visit a railroad museum, I can't help but stare at the pieces in the museum's collection or smile at the sight of Thomas, Emily, Gordon, Henry, Percy, Edward, Rebecca, or Nia running on the rails. It makes me long for the days when steam power ruled the rails and times were simpler.

I'm here for steam punk...
In an earlier comment it was stated that Steampunk was not real science. I beg to disagree. Science requires not only precision but enormous creativity... something we are losing at rapid speed as our technology advances us into a slotted and homogenized state. We are paralyzed by it but not fired up or challenged by it in meaningful ways. The era of steam was based in invention. Anyone could invent anything that fulfilled necessity or desire... and the funny thing is that my 1897 sewing machine still works, something I can't say about modern obsolescence or outcomes if the lights go out. Steampunk harkens back to the times when we could fix anything, create amazing things, and do magic with them at a time when we desperately need those activities as a globally narcotized culture trained to spend copious amounts of money "replacing" plastic junk.
I was a steamer long before I ever knew it due to a penchant for trains, science, engineering, and physical need.. and a love for gears and things that don't require a grid. Steampunk is all around us, and as it becomes more evident to the public that we are already living in and expanding upon Nikola Tesla's world it will be made obvious. The really cool thing about it as a social club is that it also fulfills some basic needs... a place to go where everybody is nice to each other, where a dual looks like tea and cookies, and where every minute of the time spent is show and tell. It is play... the kind we need to truly create cures, or better human conditions.

Exactly. There are atomic clocks, much more precise than other old, mechanichal clocks. We are not living in a steampunk world because there is better technology.
@@flavius2884 That is not the point. It's came out of Cosplay festivals and such. As did Diesel-punk, cyber-punk, goth, etc. Many sci-fi, monster, fantasy, comic books, and other entertainment media fans just want Halloween to be more often. You think Halloween was ever meant to be serious? Why would you think Steampunk is serious science/technology?
Wild Wild West and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea were not documentaries on science/technology.
