    For beginners, it's often confusing trying to remember which way to turn the barrel adjuster. A good way to imagine it is, spinning it to the right moves the derailleur to the right; while spinning it to the left moves the derailleur to the left. Great video.

    • @lokmtb8503
      @lokmtb8503 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      That's a really good way to describe it to beginners. I think the only problem lies with the fact that left or right is relative to the top or bottom of the barrel adjuster. I like to conceptualize what barrel adjuster is actually doing. The barrel adjuster is like a screw so by turning it ccw you're backing it out which tightens the cable and moves the derailleur to the left.

    • @GroundCRow
      @GroundCRow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This is way too late, but I remember the right direction by turning the adjuster down (by guiding your thumb downwards along the adjuster) the chain is moving down towards the smaller cogs more easily. Same for going up... No left - right confusion, no confusion what the small or easy gear should be.

  • @bbman85

    A few tips from my own experience wrenching on my bikes:
    - Setting the H-limit: Do this without the shifting cable attached. This will ensure that the limit is set by the screw instead of the cable tension.
    - Don't try to rush it. You'll be amazed how much difference even a quarter turn can make. In addition, if you take the time to do this properly, you probably won't need to touch the H/L/B-limit screw until you change wheel or cassette.
    - Do a test ride afterwards. Your bike or suspension may twist ever so slightly with the weight of a rider on top. If you take a few tools with you, you can finetune your settings on the go until you're satisfied.

    • @martonk1555
      @martonk1555 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, the limit screws are best to set without the chain, moving the derailleur by hand. (But don't uninstall it just for this.)

      @@martonk1555 ah yes, looking at like back and limit it, but, there is a chance that the shifting is not good.

    • @NonLegitNation2
      @NonLegitNation2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did exactly this. I just installed a Shimano SLX groupset and I had the derailleur lined up perfect with the highest gear and perfect with the lowest gear. I tensioned the cable and shifted and it still looked good so I installed the chain and everything was messed up. I'm going to give it another try tonight and see if I can fix it but I'm guessing probably not. I've NEVER been able to adjust a rear derailleur and I've been tinkering with bikes now for about 5 years. My routine is adjust it as best as i can, then take it to a LBS and have them fix what i screwed up. So far I've been lucky and the person at the bike shop has been able to fix it on the spot, but that could change tomorrow when i take it to a bike shop. When i called the shop earlier, 20 mins before they closed they said they are booked for a week for bike servicing but I can bring the bike in when they open in the morning and maybe they can take a look at it and possibly fix on the spot as long as it doesn't take too long.

    Very informative, useful process. My favorite part was how you explained initial cable tension - I always pull the cable too tight. One comment about 12 speed drivetrains - some have markings or use a tool to set b tension. I mention this as I had a problem getting into my granny, thought it was improperly set limit screw, but was actually derailleur contacting the cassette due to incorrect b screw gap. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

    Great job on this explanation. One thing I'd like to add. A drivetrain can also feel out of adjustment if the chain has stretched. No amount of adjustment will get the chain to properly mesh with the gears in this case. Something to consider for anyone with over 800 miles on their drivetrain. The problem with a stretched chain isn't so much that the overall chain is longer. It's that the space between each link no longer matches the space between each tooth on the gears. Hope this saves someone the trouble I recently went through trying to diagnose my drivetrain noise.

    I'm a first time owner of a bike that has gears. I actually followed similar instructions. It was a bit hard on the first bike I built I ordered online but second time around it was a little harder. I think it's because I had to put the bikes upside down via on its handlebars and seat. It wasn't easy trying to switch gears and pedal while trying to look at the rear Derailleur. I think it would've made my life easier if I had a bike repair stand.
    My advice to beginners, invest in a bike repair stand or build a cheap one..lol. That's my next investment for sure.

    This was the most useful video to avoid having to go to your local bike shop, specially how busy they're lately. I was able to dial in my 1x12 sram flawlessly.

    Great video! Needed a quick adjustment before a ride tomorrow and didn’t have time to drop by the bike shop first. And I also figured it wouldn’t take much but I wasn’t sure what to do. The adjustment of the shift cable is all it needed. I made a couple of adjustments and shifting is way better! Just a tiny bit of fine tuning and I’ll be set for tomorrow! Thanks. Loving all of the videos - the drops and wheelies videos have given me a lot of great tips!

    Great explanatory video! I tried other videos before but this was the only one that made me get the job done on my rear derailleur. Follow every step, don’t skip or jump steps, and you’ll get there.

  • @mushtikla1

    you are awesome! Super simple, super easy and hard to screw up anything, best video out there! I followed each step and my shifting is now PERFECT for the first time ever lol... No weird noises, no weird skips.... I got a 3x10 drivetrain so it was a bit trickier and took a few more steps than a 1x but i figured it out... Just took some time and patience, especially since it was the first time I actually tried adjusting the whole thing!
    I started with front gear biggest, rear gear smallest perfect and set it up so it works kind of great for almost all gears (had some trouble with the two biggest gears in the back).
    Then I moved it to the smallest up front and the biggest up back and aligned those the best I could (some trouble shifting down to the 2 smallest gears). My chain wasn't slack so I adjusted the B screw at this point because it was hitting the cassette slightly.
    Then moved it to the front middle and rear middle and aligned those as perfect as I could so they are in line and those worked PERFECTLY for all gears!
    I'm mostly on my middle gear up front and somewhere in the middle in the back, rarely using the 2-3 biggest and the smallest gears in the back while in this position.
    Mainly trying to keep the chain straight as much as possible. So if I need to climb hard - smallest front, biggest rear and like 3-5 biggest rear gears when I"m on the smallest in the front.
    And I rarely use the biggest up front and smallest in back... Mainly when just going on flat ground and doing some endurance runs. I'm still a MTB noob so I ain't pedaling down on downhills, too young to die lol figuring out the brakes, cornering, bike control and all that, I don't need more speed lol
    In any case, the shifts are perfect when the front gear is in the correct position/alignment with the rear ones, mostly use 3-5 gears in the back with 1 most aligned in the front (you never want to cross the chain up from the biggest gear in front and biggest in the back anyways, and vice versa)
    Hope this helps someone with setting up a 3x drive train because I had trouble finding nice videos on that cause it's pretty old school to have a 3x nowadays :)

    Just did this last night. Super helpful! Took a bit to figure it all out as I replaced my wheels and removed a spacer behind the cassette, but it wouldn't drop into the smallest two cogs. Loosened the cable tension and adjusted the limit screws and from there if was just playing with it, but it's shifting perfect through all 10 gears now :D Definitely the best adjustment video I'd seen. Thanks a lot for this!

    As a new mtb rider this video helped me a lot. My derilleur was misalligned after a ride in the terrain. The shifting was bad but I corrected it by twisting the allignment to place. This was the only video that had also this possibility explaned. Others was only about cable tension and stop screws. Thanks guys!
