    I never minded paying the 50 cents because I'd rather pay that small amount and do it in a romm that actually has white walls and isn't disgusting. The bathrooms in restaurants are free if you're a customer though. If you just rushed into the restaurant you'll probably have to pay the 50 cents or whatever unless you're a very young child.

    Often there is also a cleaning lady with a small plate or bowl where you put the money in. Sometimes they'll tell you that you have to pay but most of the time it's optional and you can put in as much money as you want. Pro tip for those places: Pay afterwards, so you know how much it's worth.

    This is actually something that i didn't appreciate until i went to the states. I was always so frustrated that i had to pay to use the restroom, but now ive been to the states and saw the bathrooms there. one bathroom at a starbucks was so disgusting :( There were maxi-pads sticking on the wall and the floor was covered in pee... when i told the workers they just said, that they had already seen that and it was unfortunate...

    In San Francisco, near the piers, there are a couple bathrooms that you do have to pay for but the door will unlock automatically if you are in there for too long.

    In fact, it don't cost you anything. It's voluntary to put some cents on the plate by the cleaning lady, like a tip. Often it's no use at all anyway since they sometimes get their salary reduced by the amount of "extra money" they make.
    But you can go avoid the peer pressured tip by going into a restaurant or café, because the cleaning ladies are more common in bars or fast food restaurants.

      ***** but still there are some toilets, where you have to spend money, because theres this barrier that will only open after you put some money in.

      I don't mean toilets at train stations or stationary ones in the city, I only talked about the ones in restaurants, cafés and bars.

      i'd like to add that you most likely won't encounter ANY toilet women or paid barriers in smaller cities and towns. his city (stuttgart) is a state capital. not quite the biggest of cities in germany but way bigger than the vast majority.

    The most expensive one i came across are the one at the Trainstations. Just hit the toilet in the trains instead. These are free and more or less clean.

  • @doesntconcernyou7207
    @doesntconcernyou7207 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's different at each public bathroom.
    For some, you have to pay. Those are usually really clean (and sometimes you can get coupons, for example by "Sanifair")
    For some, you can pay if you want to, and you are kind of expected to give a little tip, but you don't have to. These bathrooms are generally clean, but not like super-ultra modern. They are okay (mostly found in shopping centers or resaurants).
    And some are free. Most of the time little houses on the sides of the Autobahn. Only go there if you REALLY have to. It's probably better if you go behind a tree nearby. They are really disgusting, but they are free.
    There are free bathromms which are clean and good, but they ar rare.

    Also, in the bathroom is usually an attendant to keep it clean. I was surprised to see a woman in the men's toilette, and Germans have no idea why we call them bathrooms or restrooms!

    There were pay toilets in the U. S. until about 45 years ago. It used to cost a dime. They were made illegal because they discriminate against poor people. I remember a homeless guy in Budapest seeing me go into a glorified port-a-potty and waiting at the door for me to come out, so he could save the toll (worth about a nickel in American money). That's about as good an illustration of poverty as you will see. A tour guide told me that money in the tip tray goes to pay the lady who sits there and cleans up, and when put in that perspective, the people who do that job earn every penny they collect.

  • @andreaskohlmann4972

    If you running a business in Germany like a shop or a restaurant, where you serving customers, you have to provide free restrooms by law (only for their costumers of course) . There are only a few exceptions for very small businesses. You must have separate toilets for genders and for employees too!
    If there is a lady at the entrance of a bathroom who collects money, it's optional to pay. If you do, she wishes you a nice day. If you don't and she complains, it's not appropriate - especially at the wasen beer tents where a litre beer costs a "fortune".
    Other public bathroom provides may take money. The managed rest areas are a little tricky. They have to provide free restrooms, because they running a business. Therefore they invented that coupon system, where you can get a refund, but generally not for the full amount. Someone should sue them for that. That annoys me.

    I'm living in Munich and I have never paid anything yet... neither in any mall nor at the central station. Just at Highwayrestaurants I've paid yet. But if you have to pay, whats honestly really seldom the case, try to find Mcdonalds, Subway etc. instead, there it's usually free or voluntarily to give something like a tip..

    I'm German. I don't think you have to pay something everywhere. The first think I would say is the autobahn/Highway. There you have to pay some money very often. But else... I don't know not really often.

    Hey Sam,
    as one of the Germans, who watches your videos, i got a little tip about public restrooms. If your near the center of a city or some big tourist attraction or in a big train station, they are quite expensive. Walk away a few streets and they cost half as much.
    Also I must say, that your right; they are pretty clean (usually).
    I was in Italy ones with my Mum and we were looking for a restroom at a small train station and I went back out and said "Mama, somebody stole the toilette" because there was nothing but like a small canal with water on the ground.
    Hey, i was little. I didn't know better ;D
    But now I really appreciate our clean, pricy toiletts.

  • @dansattah
    @dansattah 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, the only "public" restrooms, that are free, are the ones in cafes and restaurants BUT only if you eat and/or drink something there. Same in other European countries too, for instance, Poland.

  • @Zornroeschen90
    @Zornroeschen90 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    It really depends on where you are. If the worst comes to the worst, just go inside a restaurant (not a snack bar or shop. They usually don't let "customers" to their employee toilets) and ASK POLITELY if they'll let you to use the restrooms.
    A little change in the pocket although can always come in handy.

    actually you don't have to pay at the fest. But there is a person sitting and it is expected from you but any place that sales food has to give you free access to the bathroom. (They still might ask for tips, what is practically what you pay). And that is btw the reason you get the coupon. You can charge non customers to use the bathroom but people eating there have to get it free so they get the bathroom money waved from there bill.

  • @Seegalgalguntijak

    I was actually quite outraged when this deplorable custom of demanding money for going to the rest room started about 10-15 years ago. Still, many places like malls are still free, or at least they don't make paying mandatory. There is a plate with a few cents on it, and the cleaning person sometimes sits next to it, but you can just go by - in case of a mall, it's after all you who are there to bring them money by doing business there, so it should be included just like the use of the parking garage.
    However, I have gotten used to it in such a way that most of the times, I find a place where I can go for free (or buy something to drink and then go, so they won't demand money and I paid a bit more, but still got something out of it).
    But it seems you haven't seen the "City Toilette" yet? These are automated boxes where you have to pay for them in order to open the door for you (and after 30 minutes, they throw you out again by opening up mercilessly, no matter what you're doing), they even clean themselves after usage and stuff...I appreciate the technology, but despise the concept of having to pay money for basic physical needs. Fortunately, the air to breathe is still free.

      i'm not sure if this is true, because i was pretty young back then. but i got the feeling, that it started when horror news about victims of drug overdose in public bathrooms increased. so in many big cities it seems to me that the main reason for paying for bathrooms at central stations is to keep the junkies away. but as i mentioned before, i'm not sure if this is true.

    Easy life hack if you're in the city and need to pee: look for a bakery shop or fast food restaurant. Bathrooms are almost always free to use and pretty much always clean enough to not get 12 STD's at once. Just look for a "Stadtbäckerei Junge" or any other bakery that has tables inside or outside. McDonalds is also a good call, but it's kinda weird walking in, taking a dump and then just walk out again.

    You can see who is watching your videos, right?
    Are there really a lot of Americans watching your videos, or are most of the viewers Germans, like me, who are interested on an outsiders view of Germany.
    Also concening the bathrooms.
    It´s more common to pay at bathrooms along the Autobahn or at public restrooms in big Cities or near places a lot of tourists visit.
    In smaller cities, usually the bathrooms at big parking spaces outside of the city, are free.
