RULES FAQ - Answers to frequently asked rules questions will be here! --- Q: Can you have more than one unit in either arena? A: YES! You can have any number of units in play. Q: Can you explain Taking the Initiative again? A: Each round, one player is able to take the action "Take the Initiative". When a player does, they take (or maintain) control of the Initiative marker. The player with the Initiative gets to take the first action in the next round. However, when a player Takes the Initiative, they must pass all subsequent actions that round. If a player has already Taken the Initiative that round, their opponent is not allowed to take that action that round. Q: How do named characters & Uniqueness work? A: Units with a star next to their name are Unique. Each player may only have one copy of a unique CARD in play - but you can have two different versions of the same "character" in play. For example, you may two different Luke Skywalkers in play if they are different cards with different subtitles.
If i take the initiative during the action phase and my opponent then for example decides to play a card, can i also continue making actions or do i have to wait until he passes to go to the next phase? Like am i basically locked out of the action phase if i decide to steal/retain the initiative
After taking the Initiative, your only action left is PASS. Your opponent takes non-pass action, you respond with pass, they take another non-pass action and you pass again, then they pass and you pass, the condition for ending the action phase is met so you move on to the regroup phase. You normally steal or keep the Initiative if you have no non-pass action left to maximize your turn. Unless later in the game maybe you want to go first next to deal lethal damage to the base and win the game or whatever that you're willing to give up your whole action phase that round.@@italianobergs

Absolutely excellent overview video, and loved the example gameplay at the end. Luke definitely ended up on the back foot in that last round, so he would have a bit of an uphill battle, but based on the recent FFG stream, sounds like controlling the Space arena could allow awesome comebacks late-game. I do feel like Luke could have played that last turn better to get both Leia and the Wing Guard down in the ground arena so that, even if you lost initiative, you would have built up more units for the next round. Anyway, great job!

Fantasy Flight has a long history of having a good game then abandoning it. X-Wing became unplayable, Genesys is an RPG (one of many) that gets no love, they broke Keyforge, and let’s not forget Star Wars Destiny. My better judgment as an LGS says don’t bother with this, but I’ll give them one last chance and I know I shouldn’t.
I totally understand that. I've told everyone the same thing - use your judgment. But I've been impressed with the support they've given this game compared to everything else in the past so far. Whether they deserved it or not, I hope the last chance you give them feels rewarded!
I invested so much into Star Wars destiny. I ordered and shipped them to where I live, hoping to get a head start before they start selling them on my country. Turns out the abandoned game, which was very upsetting.
I think you forgot some. Star wars LCG, Warhammer conquest, L5R, Net runner, game of thrones. FFG has one of the worst track records when it comes to supporting their LCG's and CCGs and their OP is just abysmal. Sadly, The star wars LCG was leagues better than this game imo. I play tested this and it was REALLY bad when we first started. They've corrected a few of the biggest issues but it's still not great and with Lorcana beating them to the punch and also having just a far better company backing them, I feel like this is going to last a few years and go the way of 90% of all their other card games.
Why did the Shield have to be withdrawn when the X-Wing attacked? Is the die used for anything else other than game start? Do bases have abilities? This naturally looks fascinating, with little card loss in terms of random resourcing, and could span the Saga if FF doesn't pull the plug on this. This is like a mix between TCG arenas and Commander style play, with potential for more Commanders to supplement the supporters in other Commander decks. I prefer the LCG collecting approach and am no fan of random boosters, so that's a problem. This is a very clean and concise video on how to play. Thanks so much!
1. The X-wing attacked the TIE, meaning both units dealt damage to each other equal to their attack stats. A Shield upgrade in SWU prevents the first instance of damage of any amount on the unit, then is discarded - so the TIE's full 2 damage it would normally deal in return when attacked was prevented and the Shield was discarded. 2. There are currently no abilities in the game that require a die, and of course any method of randomizing who begins with Initiative will work, but a die is the standard! 3. Yes! There are 4 bases in Spark of Rebellion that have 25 health instead of 30, and have once per game abilities. This video was made before those were spoiled, and I'm certain we'll see more interesting variations in the future. Thanks for your kind words, and I hope these answers help!
As someone who's been playing Magic for almost 20 years, this is something I would be all in on, if not for one thing. A physical card game in 2024 is not going to do well, not even a Star Wars one. I really hope they have plans for some kind of actual video game to play this, even if it's a really simple browser based app.
Thank you for creating this video! It seems like they've borrowed a few mechanics from Magic and that's close to home for me. I hope this game is as fun as you made it sound and it takes off in popularity. Now I'm tempted to check it out.
Thanks for the video! I played a few games with my friends and these were some questions that came up: * Vaders leader card says “On Attack: You may deal 2 damage to a unit”, does this apply to units in space as well as ground? I understand that you can only attack in the same arena as your unit, but the “dealing damage” on the card doesn’t make the distinction. * When I play a card and says “when played: deal x damage to a unit”, such as Vader’s Lightsaber, am I also taking damage from the unit that I choose to deal damage to? Or do we only exchange damage when units are explicitly attacking each other? * Can I play the action on my Leader card, and then play the epic action on my next turn? Sorry for the niche questions! I’m entering a tournament this week so I want to make sure I’m practicing the game right & understanding all the rules
No problem! Vader leader can target ANY unit, regardless of arena with his On Attack trigger. Effects that deal damage are not attacking - the only time you take damage back from a unit is when you declare an Attack on it with a unit. So that damage from the Lightsaber will be dealt to that unit without receiving anything back. Yes, you can use the Epic Action the same turn you use an action on your leader. Your leader does not need to be Ready to use its Epic Action. No worries at all - happy to help!
This really reminds of the game legends of runeterra. Especially with the shared turn system. Only difference so far I'm seeing in concept is the attack token that LoR has
Awesome job with this video. Great production quality. The game reminds me of Hearthstone. I'm excited for it. Your music sounds like the old SNES Star Wars
I only have 1 concern with the way this is played. There is a slight chance that in the right circumstances, you could build a deck to focus hard into a single arena and just go for base damage and ignore most of the unit cards played by your opponent. It is a race for 30 damage to the base and with no limit to the number of units that can be dropped into play in either arena, I could see this being a tactic. Ideally, I imagine you would have a few ground units to primarily act as defenders or hold off your opponent from swarming. I guess you could flip this the other way and focus the ground arena instead but players choice I guess. Maybe this won't be a thing out of the gate with the first release. Limited set of cards to work with and the right balance might stop someone from heavy building to focus a single field. The reason I find it concerning though is because of the dynamic it sets up. Your opponent can attack your units, sure. But if they are not matching you in numbers and depending on the costs of the majority of your space cards (or ground), outnumbering the opponent might be enough to stay ahead. It gets even harder when you have cards like Luke that can put shields out on cards and protect them from direct damage for a turn. With a combat system like this, 1 turn can make a huge difference.
Great job Dan!!! I thought “missed opportunity with no Wilhelm scream” when the first trooper bit the dust but you more than made up for it 😂😂😂. This game looks so spicy, love the destiny tie-ins!
The game looked complicated but thanks for your video it helped me out tremendously in learning the game. I went from passing on the game to officially looking forward to playing it. Like comments below I also don’t trust fantasy flight games with what happened to Star Wars destiny and I loved that game during its run met a great community. But I’ll def give this game a shot.
Glad I could help! I really think people are going to be surprised by FFG this time. Their approach has been entirely different than any of their past games. This is a major product for them and so far I think they've been doing a lot of things very, very right. Hopefully we see that continue!
If they want this game to really get strong, they need to get more product on shelves. They also need to produce a product for more than a few months I wasn’t able to afford buying much for SoR, so now if I want to try building a large/complete collection of that release I’m going to be paying through the nose for it. Luckily I should be able to buy in on the next release.
Game seems easy enough, and that's what Im looking for now days. I dont need every card game to be top notch tourney insanity like a Flesh and Blood or something. If I like the IP, and my kids enjoy it, it's perfect!
Looks like game mechanics they’ve taken from other LCG’s. Pretty much over these kinds of games from FFG as I have enough already. Netrunner, Game of Thrones, Call of Cthulhu etc. I’m guessing it’ll end up being yet another game with tonnes of expansions. By time it’s over you’ve spent $500+ on it. Been there done that with other LCG’s I listed above.
Really makes me wonder if FFG will actually stick with this star wars card game. We've already been through at least 2 failed SW projects with them. IDK if my heart can take it again. I was very skeptical about this game, since the art is off putting imo, but your rules breakdown really shows the game has some potentially compelling gameplay.
I say the same thing to everyone - I TOTALLY understand the burn feeling from the past, so if you feel like you need to wait and see where it goes, go for it! But for my take, what I've been seeing from FFG today is miles different than how Destiny was handled. A lot more transparency, communication, and infrastructure setup is being done that I think will make it able to last a lot longer than their previous ventures. I can't stop playing games of it, so as long as they can nail the turnaround from the FFG of the past, I think it's a smash hit game. Let's hope for the best!
A couple of comments/concerns about the game from what I've listened to: 1) No maximum deck size is a super big concern. In CCGs such as Yu-Gi-Oh! The reason for making a maximum deck size is to prevent situations where people just make a deck of like 2000 cards just to waste time for other players and ruin the experience. Generally speaking if your card game has a maximum deck size, it should be ~1.5x the size of the minimum deck, so Star Wars Unlimited should ideally have a deck size around 75, or they can just hard cap it to 50. 2) Having both players perform actions at the same time seems really cumbersome, would it not be just as easy to just have each turn be separate? 3) The universal resource system is actually a really good mechanic, This makes it so that your resources are always readily available and you aren't sitting there trying to draw a mana/resource. 4) The base/hero aspect is very unique. However unless all base cards have the same HP then the meta would be solved by "Play the biggest HP base."
Thanks for your comments! I'm happy to provide my thoughts on each point too: 1. While there have been a few examples of deck size trolling, this is generally the very rare exception. Games like Magic, UniVersus, and Battle Spirits Saga, among others, have no maximum deck size limit and having judged for all 3 to some capacity, it's just not something that comes up much! 2. The action system creates a totally different gameplay dynamic than alternating full turns that can't be replicated at all with full turns. For example, in SWU, you will have to make decisions like choosing between attacking or playing a removal event with your single first action. From experience with Star Wars Destiny, thinking several actions ahead by considering how the opponent will disrupt your plays with their actions is the key to victory. 3. Agreed! 4. Other bases will likely have lower HP and effects on them, not just have differing HP values. For example, imaging a hypothetical base that says "at the start of the game, draw 7 cards instead of 6." And has 25 HP (or something, I'm not thinking hard about balance numbers right now). That's the kind of thing we expect to see. These 30 HP, no effect bases will likely be the highest HP we see until they print bases with drawback effects to balance it.
@@MaindeckGames Thanks for the reply! After reading the rules a bit more I can definitely see the comparison between this and Star Wars Destiny, I hope the game doesn't fall into the trap that other licensed CCGs fall into of running for like two years and then just dying off. Given they have such a massive media license, the game appears to have some level of organized play already in the works as well, I think there is a chance for this to take off better than other ones.
I agree. FFG is showing so far that they are putting a lot of effort into their planning and also correcting mistakes that Destiny made. Star Wars is a strong enough IP that proper advertising and not massively fumbling key aspects should be enough to keep it running long term. I'm optimistic, but of course always keeping a critical eye out as well.
Great video! Do we know how names are going to work yet? For example I'm assuming we will see a different Yoda in a future set - is the tag under the name what differentiates it from other Yoda cards?
The one weird thing about the card design is that the leaders can't be put in a standard card sleeve. They need a clear card wrap so that both sides are legible.
Yes, they can! And it's quite good - the next damage dealt to that unit will only "pop" one shield token. However, look out for units with Saboteur that will remove ALL shields when they attack a Shielded unit, and still their deal damage to it!
Glad you found it interesting! Yes, Star Wars Unlimited is an upcoming physical TCG. Like most TCGs, some fans are sure to make mods to play it in Tabletop Simulator or other services like Untap, but there are currently no announced plans for any sort of official digital client or digital version of the game.
I'm even more hyped for the game now, it looks really fun and I like the swingy-ness I'm feeling the game provides where the momentum of the game could shift to either player. I can sense a lot of decision-making thoughout the course of a round and how those decision trees can change the course of the game. Definitely looking forward to trying it out once it releases!
Absolutely, even with a limited pool of cards we can see a lot of decisions (and I tried to present that in the gameplay as well). I can't wait to see the whole set 1 pool and get a feel for the deck options as well - the deck building system feels like it should be very open!
Awesome video! Very thoroughly explained and easy to follow. I may have missed it, but I don't understand how the initiative token gets kept or taken away. Can you explain?
The Take the Initiative action takes the initiative token. Only one player can Take the Initiative each phase, and once they do, they must pass all future actions that phase, and will get to take the first action when the game moves to the next round.
The player who takes the initiative in a round gets to take the first action on the next round! Only one player can take the initiative each round and must pass all of their actions after they do so.
Dan, can I ask you how you chose the font for the titles throughout the video such as “Aspect System” and “Card Anatomy” and why you didn’t use something classier like Franklin Demi or Comic Sans?
The font used is nearly identical to the font used on the titles of cards in the game, but thanks for the feedback - I'll try the next one in Papyrus or maybe Jokerman!
Brilliant How To, thank you! One question, is there any way of getting Resource cards back into your hand? Or does resourcing cards mean you can't play them for the rest of that game?
I am SO ready for this to come out, pre ordered a box and Vader sleeves from one of my LGS and hoping to get some local play support. I was a huge fan of Destiny and I love the call backs but also feels like a different game. Literally can't wait to sleeve it up.
Thank you so much, it's super appreciated - both the kind words and the sub! I'm excited to bring more SWU content after the creator celebration this weekend!
I'm skeptical about any non-magic card game but I've always had a soft spot for Star Wars card games. I might check this out... my wallet will not be happy

I like it! Thanks for the demo! Definitely a Day 1 for me.
You're very welcome - same here!
Thank you for creating this video! It seems like they've borrowed a few mechanics from Magic and that's close to home for me. I hope this game is as fun as you made it sound and it takes off in popularity. Now I'm tempted to check it out.
Fantastic video thank you!!!! Now I'm ready to play!
Amazing how to play video - so well done!
Thank you so much, it's so nice to hear that!
Thanks for the video! I played a few games with my friends and these were some questions that came up:
* Vaders leader card says “On Attack: You may deal 2 damage to a unit”, does this apply to units in space as well as ground?
Thank you so much! The music was from the Super Star Wars SNES series :)
Thank you, that makes my choice on purchasing this easier
The Demo was great thanks!
You are very welcome, thanks for the comment!
Great overview of the rules! This a perfect starting point for new players.
Thanks so much - that's the goal, I sure hope it helps people!
Yes, absolutely. You can have any amount of ground or space units in play.
There is a lot to show in a short amount of time! I apologize for letting you down on that, but I've included it in the FAQ pinned post.
Great video Dan! Game is looking good. Just played my first few games yesterday
Awesome! Hope you had a blast, thanks so much!
Thanks. Really enjoyed the sample game play.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment!
Very clean and polished presentation! Well done!
This was a great video. Well done.
those text on the top, illustration on the bottom cards dont look too pleasing but aside that the game feels nice.
also top video and explanation!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
This was a great video. Good job!
Thank you so much!
How'd you get this up so fast? This is great!
I know a few maneuvers! 😆
Great tutorial! Even more excited now!
I just can’t wait to this cards game into my hands soon.
Game seems easy enough, and that's what Im looking for now days. I dont need every card game to be top notch tourney insanity like a Flesh and Blood or something. If I like the IP, and my kids enjoy it, it's perfect!
Definitely feels like a easy game to get into, but plenty of depth if you want to look for it too!
The demo was helpful, thank you!
This was super useful, great explanation. Thanks!
Well, it's a TCG, so if it doesn't have tons of expansions, people will be quite upset!
@@MaindeckGames that’s why I won’t be bothering. It’ll end up too expensive.
Amazing how to play video, thank you for making it
So glad you enjoyed it, thanks for your kind comment!
A couple of comments/concerns about the game from what I've listened to:
1) No maximum deck size is a super big concern.
I'm happy to provide my thoughts on each point too:
Awesome tutorial!
Great video! Do we know how names are going to work yet? For example I'm assuming we will see a different Yoda in a future set - is the tag under the name what differentiates it from other Yoda cards?
FFG is going to clarify Uniqueness rules in the near future, stay tuned! I'll post an update to the pinned FAQ when that happens.
The one weird thing about the card design is that the leaders can't be put in a standard card sleeve. They need a clear card wrap so that both sides are legible.
Something neat that Gamegenic does is include a clear sleeve with all their sleeve packs that you can use for your leader!
@@MaindeckGames If the booster packs weren't like $10 each right now I would buy some cards lol
Your video was extremely helpful in explaining the game. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I'm forever ruined by Star Wars CCG by Decipher.
First time at your chanel. It was a great tutorial, thank you!
I'm so glad you found it helpful, thanks for the kind comment!
@@MaindeckGames Also, huge respect for using Wilhelm sream at 15:56 )) Really fitting!
Great video!
Really looking forward to this coming out in march! Can a unit have more than 1 shield token?
Yes, they can! And it's quite good - the next damage dealt to that unit will only "pop" one shield token. However, look out for units with Saboteur that will remove ALL shields when they attack a Shielded unit, and still their deal damage to it!
Kinda reminds me of a light version of the game by decipher. I really liked that game.
That was my first TCG - very fond memories!
That's an interesting video, thanks!
As i understand we can only get an offline version of this? No option for mobile/pc version like TES Legends?
Great video! Thanks!
Nice vid, might have to watch it again tho, I cant recall what taking the initiative means heh
The player who takes the initiative in a round gets to take the first action on the next round! Only one player can take the initiative each round and must pass all of their actions after they do so.
Thanks, bud. This was great.
Glad it was helpful for you!
Thanks for this video!
You are very welcome, so glad it could help people!
I will play this once the game has proven to be fully supported by the devs and when it's been around for a good year or 2.
As a Destiny veteran, I like what I see
Amazing video! Does damage replenish if a unit is not removed?
Damage stays on units until the damage is removed or the unit is defeated/leaves play! It doesn't clear at end of turn like some other games!
Can't wait till gencon when I get to try out this game
Same! I'm in the 9 AM Demo on Thursday, first possible chance! Can't wait to catch up with the Star Wars community!
I have 9am Saturday. Couldn't get off work during the week
Imagine rage quitting a game against yourself 19:00😶
I'm my own worst enemy!
Awesome. Thanks for the video...
You are very welcome!
Brilliant How To, thank you! One question, is there any way of getting Resource cards back into your hand? Or does resourcing cards mean you can't play them for the rest of that game?
Card effects will let you! Check out Lando Calrissian!
@@MaindeckGames Nice, thank you
We will definitely see a deck limit added in the first year of competitive play. Unlimited deck size can be exploited too well
Many card games have no issues with no maximum deck size, so I guess we will see!
@@MaindeckGames I hope it does work out! I remember when Yugioh ran into that issue with the thousand card deck lmao
Need a Spaceballs set.
Now to wait
I've got a really good feeling about this!
I am SO ready for this to come out, pre ordered a box and Vader sleeves from one of my LGS and hoping to get some local play support. I was a huge fan of Destiny and I love the call backs but also feels like a different game. Literally can't wait to sleeve it up.
also the editing and visuals were A+ you get a day one sub from me well done.
Star Wars games are my weakness too!
as if magic was any good.
Multiplayer is possible as well ? Count me in.
