Thanks so much for the support! Unfortunately a long video but I get asked about the sumps all the time so hope it will answer some questions. I’ll make a video on the saltwater tank and will start to showing all (29) tanks running in the house. As for the electricity used, all of my set ups are pretty energy-efficient believe it or not. The 300 for example only runs one main DC pump (at 70%), a heater, UV sterilizer, 2 wave makers, and LED light strip. So for a tank that size...not bad on power consumption all things considered. The fish room....all but two tanks run on one air pump with the sponge filters. So far not terrible.
Amazing!! I am working up towards this...one day! The fish are really thriving so not only does the sump look fabulous, but seems to work incredibly well. One question in the drip system- how do you dechlorinate/remove ammonia continuously??? Also have you managed to create a diagram of this? Really well done!!!
Thanks so much. With the drip system, the carbon filter blocks are there to remove the chlorine out of the water. There is no ammonia in the new water coming in.
can i get more info on that bedding you get from walmart, ive been buying filter media on amazon and im looking for another solution that doesnt cost as much. also how many gph would you say your adding with the constant drip system. is that basically an RO filter? do you dose for chlorine/chloramine?
The rolls of bedding mat material I get from Walmart are in the pillow stuffing section. You get a bunch of it for dirt cheap and it is perfect. You can rinse it out and reuse it a handful of times so each package lasts me a long time. I am dripping just over 1 gallon per hour constantly into the tank. It goes through this filtration system which consists of a sediment block to remove fine particles, then through two different micron carbon filters to remove the chlorine.
The timing of this vid is perfect! I'm working on tank #9, biggest yet at 210g. The previous ones are a mix of HOBs and canisters, and I've got no experience with sumps. I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate an auto drip system with a sump, while accounting for evaporation. Float valve!! Check valve is a great idea! Is there any risk with a check valve?? Also trying to figure out filter socks vs roller mat. This vid is VERY helpful!
Good Morning Phil, I've been using float valves in this manner for a very long time and it is absolutely the way to go in my opinion. The check valve is on the return line of course and is there in case of a power failur or if I were to manually turn the pump off.,...it instantly stops any back-flow of water going back to the sump. As for the filter socks....the struggle is real. They are good and help keep my tanks crystal clear but I have also been looking at roller mats lately as a replacement.
I noticed you didn't have the 3 stage water filtration system you used on your main display tank. Do you use a similar system on the smaller grow out tank for you auto fill system
I do yes, same 3 stage sediment/carbon filtration in the basement for auto top off of the tanks down there. Only difference is they have float valves instead of a constant drip system/drain line like you see on my 300G.
I’m setting up my first sump on a 125 gallon Discus tank. I would love more detail on your auto change set up. I have to use RODI with remineraliz every and kh booster. Can auto changes be done with “mixed” water ? I
I use a plastic gutter guard that is used to keep leaves and debris out of gutters. It works really well for me. The holes are just smaller than the K1 so they cannot pass through and there is no water flow restriction. The filter socks I use are 7" diameter socks. I use both 200 micron, and the finer...100 micron socks.
Can’t use acrylic baffles unfortunately, even if it does adhere it will fail not too long down the road. I have tried it multiple times.....doesn’t hold up. Need to use glass baffles.
Long story short, I strategically cut and built the piping under the tank to route through a plastic flower box that is full of lava rock with the plants. That being said it is basically a whole filter in itself really with the amount of lava rock I have along with the plants.
awesome walkthrough of your sump! love it. just to check on your main display, are you using a powerhead or pump to move the K1? if so, what is the capacity of it?
Really nice, I love aquariums, I'm inspired here and there. I'd like to make one like yours but unfortunately I don't understand what all the tubes are for in your case, being Italian I don't understand..:/
One of my local fish stores, top notch place. You can buy it online however, I know Bulk Reef Supply sells it, and I’ve seen it sold on eBay. If you put it into Google it should pull up a few places on where to buy it.
Very nice! Let me ask you a question if I could.. We just got a 180 gallon tank and I'm really looking to do a drip and drain system like you have but our tap kH is 0 most of the time, so currently with my 75 gallon tank and all my fry tanks, breeders, etc. I use a 63 gallon container with aragonite in the bottom with a wavemaker, and I pretreat the water with safe to dechlorinate and baking soda to adjust kH to around 9-14dKH, then I let it circulate for a day before water changes. I am thinking I need to do some aragonite inline before the drip. Could you help a guy out? I LOVE your setup! This new tank was setup for salt before, but will be cichlids now. It came with a Triton44 sump. Thanks!
If you want to maintain the higher numbers compared to what comes out of your tap, then you will need to implement some form of buffer system obviously. You can do this many ways, you can use a bunch of aragonite, it would have to be a pretty decent amount, you can use crushed coral or crushed oyster shells etc. I have been crazy busy lately and lacking on the videos but I will make some new videos going more in depth with this stuff.
@@Jetblink619 Would an RO system with an aragonite or buffering cylinder on it do the trick? Or a separate large single buffering cylinder? Also, do you use a tank before your RO system like that comes with an RO system?
@@airshipfpv5972 I used a 3 canister system, like the one you see under my 300 stand, with aragonite and crushed coral a few years ago. It did not buffer the water enough to make it worth it honestly. Right now I am using a sediment filter followed by two different micron carbon filters. I also made a large crushed coral “reactor” using PVC that was more useful. I will be setting up new tanks in my basement fish room next week hopefully and will make some more in-depth videos on this.
It is actually a gutter guard that I bought from Home Depot which is basically just a piece of plastic with a ton of holes in it for high water flow but small enough that the media cannot pass through. I also have it angled so the media does not get caught up on it from the flow and just keeps circulating.
@@Jetblink619 Thank you! I am completely ripping off your setup at the moment for a 265 gallon I'm building. And i couldn't for the life of me figure out what that was. Your set ups are amazing!

@@Jetblink619 Thank you for the heads up! I have been slow rolling it because I want to go all in on it. (This is my first tank build that's drilled so I am definitely intimated by it) I have the 75 gallon tank for the sump but I haven't order the baffles yet or any of the plumbing.
Love the progression of the sump on your main display tank from what it was, to what it is today! Quick question: Since you no longer do water changes due to the drip system, do you still vacuum the substrate? If so, how often? Does the decrease in water after vacuuming effect anything while the drip system catches up to the correct levels? Thanks.
Thanks! I do not vacuum my sand....ever. Between these big guys always picking it up and spitting it out and moving it around, and the wave makers moving the sand around, it always seems to stay very clean so there’s no need for me to vacuum it.
For the most part I have always used Durso and Bean Animal overflow setups. right now I am running three tanks with the Durso setup because that is how the tanks came drilled from the factory with the stock setup, but also because I can tune them to be practically silent. That is what I am currently running on my 300, 210, and 90 gallon tanks. I am running a Bean Animal on my 120 that is down in my basement. It is a bit louder but has greater waterflow. The Bean Animal is actually the safest as far as clogging and overflowing the tank goes. I may actually be changing the overflow setup on the 300 to be able to increase the flow. Stay tuned, there may be a video on the horizon on this.
I just bought a salt water tank, I don't know the capacity of it yet. I want to put guppies only because I loved them as a child growing up. My tank is like a half oval bull nose tank. I bought it at habitat for humanity and have no idea how it works. I know its got a pump and 3 compartment built into it on the flat back part of the tank. I don’t see any holes with outlets or returns on it, just a simple hose that shoots the water back into the tank. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Please lol Thank you, Hector. If we can chat some other way please tell me how? Thanks again for your help
I took a piece of light diffuser and zip tied some 1 inch PVC pipe to the bottom of it. I cut the light diffuser out to fit in my utility sink. This allows the light diffuser to sit at least an inch off the bottom of the tub. I place the filter, socks, on top of the light diffuser have a 2 foot hose connected to a high pressure water nozzle. I have really good pressure coming out so I basically just blast the socks with warm or hot water and I am able to get them completely clean very quickly.
Need a little help, I have a freshwater tank with a sump and I'm using filter socks. I just replaced the sock with a brand new one and getting bubbles overflowing from top of sock. I was able to stop the bubbles by raising the sock about 4" above the sock mount is this normal?
That is a hard question to answer without seeing the setup but yes, most setups will have air in the lines. My set up does not. It does not because I have valves that are tuned to maintain a certain water level in the overflow box and drain lines where there is no air. This makes my system completely silent. So to answer your question if I’m hearing you correctly...yes your situation is normal
Heaters are in the dumps on all of my setups. The 210 has two 300W heaters The 300 has two 500W heaters All tanks in the house are controlled by their individual InkbirdSmart WiFi heater controllers.
This is a beautiful setup. The fact that you have 0 nitrates means all that media and sump baffles and hydroponics are completely useless :) Your constant water change is what is keeping the water clear and 0 nitrates. You probably don't even have a cycled tank in there because you'd never have enough ammonia to startup bacteria. It's a great idea and I'm going to copy it! It's a lot more difficult for me to get access to a drain and water from my tank as I'm on a concrete slab, but i'll hack something together. Gorgeous fish and great setup!!
*There is clearly beneficial bacteria growing on the k1 fluidized bed and has certainly cycled. I'm certain this tank was also cycled before the constant drip was turned on. * The total volume of this system is around 360gal. A 1 gallon per hour drip, is equivalent to a 50% water change about every 10 days. It will take approximately 70 days to effectively change 99% of the water in that system. While the constant drip system aids in keeping nitrate levels low it is only one item in doing so and is not the end all be all for nitrate level reduction, as explained above with effective water change of the drip sytem. The aquaponics system incorporated here is probably responsible for the majority of the nitrate reduction.
great tank but too much water changed and what about heating all that water coming in? same water clarity and balance could be achieved with a lot less cost in my opinion!!! any haw great job
Assuming you are referring to the pvc gluing…..my trick is I don’t put gobs of it on, I tap it once or twice on the can so it doesn’t run all over the place. If you take your time with it, it will come out very clean and no drips
Why not put the drain at the left side, and fresh water in -maintain at the right side. To me, this is most efficient use of fresh water. The dirtiest water gets discharge out first, and doesnt come in contact with fresh water. Kind of a waste of effort to treat the water then drain it out eventually. IMHO, I believe you will get even better water parameter by changing the drain position.
Lol, yes he did, but I'm certain he meant floating in air. A phrase often used with perfectly clear water column and an indication of a near bacteria free water column.
Good to know, I’ve been pronooncing it the way I do from hearing it pronounced that way at a couple of the local fish shops. Learn something new each day!

The fish room....all but two tanks run on one air pump with the sponge filters. So far not terrible.
What company is the piping from.?. And how do you Glue it together.
I didn't understand... how do you dechlorinate the constant water change?
can i get more info on that bedding you get from walmart, ive been buying filter media on amazon and im looking for another solution that doesnt cost as much. also how many gph would you say your adding with the constant drip system. is that basically an RO filter? do you dose for chlorine/chloramine?
Great video, I love your sump tank. Are you able to draft out a diagram how it works?
que tipo de bomba tiene para mover el k 1 ...muchas gracias
...
Thank u so much! For the last chamber, how to keep k1 flow to return chamber? What filter sock r they?
I use a plastic gutter guard that is used to keep leaves and debris out of gutters. It works really well for me. The holes are just smaller than the K1 so they cannot pass through and there is no water flow restriction.
The filter socks I use are 7" diameter socks. I use both 200 micron, and the finer...100 micron socks.
Thank u! How much K1 do I think is enough for 120 gallon. I think to redesign my sump.
@@QuangNguyen-uc1om I can’t say because I don’t know what your set up is. Just a rough guess would be approximately 1L of K1.
Good luck 👍
Thank u so much for ur time. I just got trigger sapphire34 for my 120. Any suggestion to build more chamber for water flow. I want to switch to k1.
Do most Ciclids eat plants? I rarely see any in most tanks.
I'm trying to build a sump but the acrylic won't adhere to my glass tank (40gal)
Can’t use acrylic baffles unfortunately, even if it does adhere it will fail not too long down the road. I have tried it multiple times.....doesn’t hold up.
Need to use glass baffles.
How did you create the aquaponics for the plants?
Long story short, I strategically cut and built the piping under the tank to route through a plastic flower box that is full of lava rock with the plants. That being said it is basically a whole filter in itself really with the amount of lava rock I have along with the plants.
awesome walkthrough of your sump! love it. just to check on your main display, are you using a powerhead or pump to move the K1?
if so, what is the capacity of it?
The pump I use in the K1 is a Sicce model 5
@@Jetblink619 sweet - thanks buddy. love the flow in your k1 compartment, will definitely get something similar to mimic the flow.
Really nice, I love aquariums, I'm inspired here and there. I'd like to make one like yours but unfortunately I don't understand what all the tubes are for in your case, being Italian I don't understand..:/
What air pump are you using? You mention "Sise"? Can not find this ?
Assuming you are referring to the K1 media, no air pumps. Wave maker
Amazing filtration system, the slow but constant water change is brilliant... Why the aquarium looks like an overcrowded desert?
Any website sell sump kit for 55g or 75g?
Where did you purchase the orange piping from?
One of my local fish stores, top notch place. You can buy it online however, I know Bulk Reef Supply sells it, and I’ve seen it sold on eBay. If you put it into Google it should pull up a few places on where to buy it.
What did you do to create the movement of K1
Wave maker pump
could you list down the pumps that you used for each setup please
Main pumps on:
300 and 210 - Jebao DCP-10,000
120 - Jebao DCP 8000
90 - Sicce 5
on the constant drip system are you conserned with Chlorine and Chloramine from water provider ? or is that handeled with the filtration system
The incoming water is filtered through different stages of carbon to remove the chlorine from the tap.
@@Jetblink619 nice Not just the three canister filter one that you’re showing Beneath the tank
Whats are you using to keep the K1 from flowing through the baffle?
It is actually a gutter guard that I bought from Home Depot which is basically just a piece of plastic with a ton of holes in it for high water flow but small enough that the media cannot pass through. I also have it angled so the media does not get caught up on it from the flow and just keeps circulating.
@@Jetblink619 Thank you! I am completely ripping off your setup at the moment for a 265 gallon I'm building. And i couldn't for the life of me figure out what that was. Your set ups are amazing!
@@mattheworsini3000 thanks! Before you do that, keep an eye out for a video I will be posting this week on the sump. I completely tore it down over the past few days and rebuilt and re-plumbed the whole system. It is much, much better now… And we will say… A bit fancier. I will be posting a new video in the next few days on it.
What overflows have you used on your tanks? Herbie, Bean Animal, and or Durso? Which one do you like the best? which one is the quietist?
Stay tuned, there may be a video on the horizon on this.
did you build the tank stand?
@@yellowbridgesoftware yes
what soil substrate are you using for aquaponics system ?
I just bought a salt water tank, I don't know the capacity of it yet. I want to put guppies only because I loved them as a child growing up. My tank is like a half oval bull nose tank. I bought it at habitat for humanity and have no idea how it works. I know its got a pump and 3 compartment built into it on the flat back part of the tank. I don’t see any holes with outlets or returns on it, just a simple hose that shoots the water back into the tank. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Please lol
Thank you, Hector. If we can chat some other way please tell me how? Thanks again for your help
what brand is the 3d backround on your tanks ?
Aquadecor on my 300, all my other tanks are 3D backgrounds I made.
What’s ur method of cleaning filter socks?
I took a piece of light diffuser and zip tied some 1 inch PVC pipe to the bottom of it. I cut the light diffuser out to fit in my utility sink. This allows the light diffuser to sit at least an inch off the bottom of the tub. I place the filter, socks, on top of the light diffuser have a 2 foot hose connected to a high pressure water nozzle. I have really good pressure coming out so I basically just blast the socks with warm or hot water and I am able to get them completely clean very quickly.
@@Jetblink619 maybe make quick vid on how it’s done? I think people will like that. Ty
So to answer your question if I’m hearing you correctly...yes your situation is normal
thank you
Can you list the fish that you have?
Where are your heaters in this setup?
Heaters are in the dumps on all of my setups.
The 210 has two 300W heaters
The 300 has two 500W heaters
All tanks in the house are controlled by their individual InkbirdSmart WiFi heater controllers.
How did you stir or agitate those K1 media?
Wavemaker
Can u use K1 in a saltwater sump
I personally never have, but I do not see a reason why you couldn’t.
What the power usage per day?
No clue
great tank but too much water changed and what about heating all that water coming in? same water clarity and balance could be achieved with a lot less cost in my opinion!!! any haw great job
whats the trick to not getting primer/glue all over the place?
Did he say it looks like the fish are floating?
Lol, yes he did, but I'm certain he meant floating in air. A phrase often used with perfectly clear water column and an indication of a near bacteria free water column.
