Week 5: Plumbing, Overflows, and Return Pumps | 52 Weeks of Reefing

  • It's Week 5 of 52 Weeks of Reefing, and this week we are plumbing the #BRS160! This week we are going to talk about the four types of overflows, give you some tips on installing a custom overflow including drilling the glass, various plumbing pieces, return pumps and then plumb our Reef Savvy Ghost Overflow to the sump.
An overflow is used to get water from the aquarium safely down to the sump and they come in a few different types. Your typical reef ready tank comes with an overflow already installed, you can buy a hang on overflow or install a custom overflow for standard or non-reef ready tanks.
There are three main ways to plumb your overflow, all of which are designed to help make it silent, safe and prevent gurgling. All three are named after the reefer who made it popular with the Durso, Herbie and Bean Animal.
The Durso standpipe uses a single overflow standpipe with a vent hole and adjustable air valve in the top. This allows you to fine tune a small amount of air into the overflow. Without the air vent the pipe would pull a full siphon which will continually start and stop with a ton of really loud gurgling.
Hobbyists have worked to further improve on that to make it safer and even quieter with the Herbie overflow . The Herbie uses two overflows; a primary and an emergency. Rather than use air to control the water like the Durso does it uses a gate valve to fine tine the flow of water to a complete siphon with no air getting sucked in which basically makes it completely silent. The second emergency overflow is required just in case something like a fish, snail or chunk of algae gets sucked into the main overflow and reduces flow.
To step that up one more notch the bean animal combines both of these together to achieve something that is ultra silent , ultra safe and really easy to tune. The bean animal uses a gate valve on the primary overflow, a secondary stability overflow with a hole drilled in it which is capable of accounting for small fluctuations in water flow while never creating a full siphon, and an emergency overflow which will handle the water it something happens to the other two. The bean animal is really the gold standard these days and what most of us want to use if we can.

Going back I would change out the rigid braided tubing for PVC. I think I was just very excited in the beginning and it seemed like the easiest option.
Using soft black tubing as a return hose was my saving grace. It's so soft, maliable and easy to work with.
PVC tubing is definately way more aesthetically pleasing.
Also making a note of the Bean Animal 4:50, I come back often and I have drilled my own tanks in the past a lot. I've always planned on drilling out something big, but this makes me feel like I could do it in the most ideal way.

Great work guys. I laugh every time I watch some of your older videos, needless to say they've come along way :) information has always been great though. Just drilled my 75-P ADA tank with your hole saws and drill guide.
The guide def has some wobble in it but helps out tremendously. It took forever!! Ridiculously long. Others mentioned 20-30mins per hole, try over an hour on each. That's a long time to be stressing. Luckily Had plenty lot of vodka on hand. In the end clean perfect holes. Used a 60mm and 30mm. Keep up the good videos.
I worked in the feature film industry for a long time and BRS could totally make a nice short film about the love of reefing. Similar to Kessil's latest. Holla if you'd like to ever entertain the idea.

Going all out on this one, don't skimp out, throw a KZ 2.0 L zeo reactor on there with one of your vertex alpha skimmers. I got a 4.0 L kz reactor from you guys this summer and I have to say its very nice. Its interesting you happen to be doing a build the same time as I am. We are about at the same stage, im still waiting for my 72x20x16 smoke synergy sump to come in. I just finished cleaning out the pukani you guys sent me, I gave it a good bleach soak. I went with pac sun diuna 10x80w t5 lamp with 3 radions in the rear over a 6'x3'x27" 300g tank. I might have to pick up one of those ecotech returns as well. The market is really lacking in nice DC pumps I just hope the price tag is fair. I live up in Duluth, Minnesota pride!

Love the plumbing set-up and will be using a similar set-up for a future reef aquarium I'm planning. I'm a bit confused though with the three valve manifold in the return lines. Are those for inputs from something like a media reactor? And if that's the case, won't the higher pressure from the larger return pump force the return flow out those valves and into the media reactor in the reverse direction. Maybe I just need to keep watching and see what you do with those inputs...

Tip when drilling a glass tank not mentioned in the video.
If at all possible, drill from the inside -> out. The side you start drilling from will have the smoothest possible surface to seal against. The side you are drilling towards can sometime break off when there is only a 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch left to drill through. If this happens it can leave a cupped out chip right at the edge of the hole that will never seal properly against a bulk head fitting gasket. Been there done that.

    • @SilverstateHobbies
      @SilverstateHobbies 9 ปีที่แล้ว

***** I drill outside in but put painters tape inside and if you go slow enough, virtually no chipout remains inside

    • @sugershakify
      @sugershakify 9 ปีที่แล้ว

***** Agreed guys, slow and steady. I will still stand by my recommendation. If space allows try and drill from inside to outside. Not always possible, especially on smaller "40 breeder" tanks, but worth the effort. I've drilled probably a dozen different tanks in my time and it is beyond frustrating to drill a perfectly good hole only to have it chip out on the last millimeter. I now clamp a small piece of wood on the back side of the glass when drilling to support it when punching through.
Remember everyone ..... you're not "cutting" or "drilling" through the glass. You're "grinding" through the glass. Give the bit time to grind through 100% of the glass and don't get impatient at the end.

Not sure if you guys answer questions here but it looks like your 160 gallon manifold is 1 inch hard plumbing, but you reduce it to 3/4" hard plumbing for the return ends why? Also the silicon soft tubing for vibration reduction at the start of the pump is a great idea. Just curious there as well why it isn't 1 inch? Just trying to learn why people do what they do. I figured reducing the tubing and return piping would cause more pipe resistance lowering water flow?

WOW! I have a simple 10 gallon HOB tank in my kitchen and we purchased a 36 gallon bowfront black friday for 107.00 I had seen a used on on FB and it looked as if one pipe led to sump and other came up and I though, my hubby can do that! haha. I didnt realize until a few days ago that something needed to be inside the tank! It sucks I only have a 36 space in my family room and walking by I could see the plumbing if we did a ghost overflow. No to mention not much space inside to put a regular type of overflow and certainly dont want to see a HOB in my family room. Not very aesthetic . Its disguised or hard to see under kitchen cabinets and in a cut out corner! Sill What is bets solution for my dilemma. I have considered an AIO but they are pretty small like biocube are very cheap used but biggest is 32 gallons and alot of space is taken by sump ext in back.. There is someone selling a custom 38 gallon plumbed for 200.00 so even if we plumb the 36 for 107.00 the stuff I need to buy is probably costly so this seems a much better deal after watching this. Tank is custom as well and it is made wider at the top then bottom, so more room uptop for an overflow box so probably take mine back. Hopefully whoever custom made it took all the precautions as hate to lose my wood floors from a flood!

I have a tank drilled for one inch abs bulkheads but my sump has 11/2 bulkheads for the drain lines. 1. If you don't mind me asking, because I am buying that same vectra return pump soon from you. At 17:51 into the video, is that a 3⁄4" Pipe Adapter Spigot x Barb coming out of the Vectra return pump or a 1"? I know the output of the vectra is 1" but just wondering if I am going to to need a 3/4" or 1" pipe adapter? Because I am hoping to run 1" piping throughout the rest of the return.
    2. Is it ok to use this same type of weld-on glue you used @ 13:30, connecting a schedule 40 pvc to bond to a schedule 80 valve?
    3. Where can I find those valves you used on the air line tubing @ 4:00 into video, that comes out of the top of the overflow tubing? If you sale them, do you have a part number? Thank you!

I would like to use a vectra pump and the manifold design you have here. I currently have a 60 gallon tank with a 40 gallon sump but I eventually want to upgrade to a 150+ gallon tank and still be able to use this pump. I also have a BRS deluxe carbon reactor, a bio pellet reactor and a RX-C 6D Vertex Calcium Reactor. I was thinking of getting the L1. Will I be able to dial it back enough for my current 60 until I get the 150 gallon tank?

One more question for you guys.. I've watched a bunch of videos regarding an over flow but, before I drill my tank, I can't seem to find any videos showing the measurements or how high or low to drill and plum. I want to do the method of two outgoing pipes in the over flow, one being he emergency. How would I find the right measurements? Thanks guys!

I was planning on creating my own over flow with either PVC or acrylic.. I guess with a DIY, i can make it how I want right?

Also instead of using the gate valve for your drain would it be ok to use the Cepex Ball Valve to adjust the flow to the sump instead?

I wish I had the thousands to spend on just a sump and overflow.
I'll have to check around for affordable options.

What PVC cement did you guys used here? I think you showed Weldon 711 but in minte 16:10 I think Ryan has a different kind.

Did you guys plumb the Reef Savvy ghost overflow with the bulkheads facing the “wrong” way?
I have a new Reef Savvy overflow which came assembled with the bulkhead head inside the internal overflow box.

One concern I have with sumps is the fact that intake and outlet are both at the top. What is the best way to insure that water does not stagnate at the bottom?

Question about your plumbing. What is the point of the gate valve in you return? Shouldn't the return be free flow at what ever rate the pump is pushing the water into the tank?

What size pipe is running between the overflow and the sump? Do you have any concern if it can handle the output of the Vectra pump? The smallest one has max flow of 2100GPH.

Question, are you saying I don't need to glue the street or spigot fittings?

I have a quick question. What kind of recommended return pump would be good for a 29 gallon biocube. Still a novice at what i need to learn. Thanx in advance

Are there any disadvantages to using threaded fittings? Did you just go with slip and unions for everything?
