    Love Brstv. Hey Spears Manufacturing makes thousands of fittings no kidding. I work there and seriously they can make any fittings known to man and probably more than I know. Top notch fittings. 👌

    Going back I would change out the rigid braided tubing for PVC. I think I was just very excited in the beginning and it seemed like the easiest option.
    Using soft black tubing as a return hose was my saving grace. It's so soft, maliable and easy to work with.
    PVC tubing is definately way more aesthetically pleasing.
    Also making a note of the Bean Animal 4:50, I come back often and I have drilled my own tanks in the past a lot. I've always planned on drilling out something big, but this makes me feel like I could do it in the most ideal way.

    Going all out on this one, don't skimp out, throw a KZ 2.0 L zeo reactor on there with one of your vertex alpha skimmers. I got a 4.0 L kz reactor from you guys this summer and I have to say its very nice. Its interesting you happen to be doing a build the same time as I am. We are about at the same stage, im still waiting for my 72x20x16 smoke synergy sump to come in. I just finished cleaning out the pukani you guys sent me, I gave it a good bleach soak. I went with pac sun diuna 10x80w t5 lamp with 3 radions in the rear over a 6'x3'x27" 300g tank. I might have to pick up one of those ecotech returns as well. The market is really lacking in nice DC pumps I just hope the price tag is fair. I live up in Duluth, Minnesota pride!

  • @karennation3580

    what is the point of the little overflow at 2:30? The used tank I bought is simply missing a cover with grids cut in it. The gasket or fitting or bulkhead or whatever it is called lol Is not there but a screen that goes over the pvc pipe to keep fishes from being sucked down. I read they were for oxygenation but I dont see how that would provide anymore oxygenation than tilting it towards the surface. HOB filters provide oxenation in that same manner sort of. Just the flow hitting the surface of the water and we also have a wavemaker pointed towards the surface as well making ripples. I am asking because we want to hook this up and we were also using the plumbing as a diagram to plumb another larger tank and we have never plumbed a tank before!

    Tip when drilling a glass tank not mentioned in the video.
    If at all possible, drill from the inside -> out. The side you start drilling from will have the smoothest possible surface to seal against. The side you are drilling towards can sometime break off when there is only a 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch left to drill through. If this happens it can leave a cupped out chip right at the edge of the hole that will never seal properly against a bulk head fitting gasket. Been there done that.

    • @SilverstateHobbies
      @SilverstateHobbies 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I drill outside in but put painters tape inside and if you go slow enough, virtually no chipout remains inside

    • @sugershakify
      @sugershakify 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Agreed guys, slow and steady. I will still stand by my recommendation. If space allows try and drill from inside to outside. Not always possible, especially on smaller "40 breeder" tanks, but worth the effort. I've drilled probably a dozen different tanks in my time and it is beyond frustrating to drill a perfectly good hole only to have it chip out on the last millimeter. I now clamp a small piece of wood on the back side of the glass when drilling to support it when punching through.
      Remember everyone ..... you're not "cutting" or "drilling" through the glass. You're "grinding" through the glass. Give the bit time to grind through 100% of the glass and don't get impatient at the end.

    Great work guys. I laugh every time I watch some of your older videos, needless to say they've come along way :) information has always been great though. Just drilled my 75-P ADA tank with your hole saws and drill guide.
    The guide def has some wobble in it but helps out tremendously. It took forever!! Ridiculously long. Others mentioned 20-30mins per hole, try over an hour on each. That's a long time to be stressing. Luckily Had plenty lot of vodka on hand. In the end clean perfect holes. Used a 60mm and 30mm. Keep up the good videos.
    I worked in the feature film industry for a long time and BRS could totally make a nice short film about the love of reefing. Similar to Kessil's latest. Holla if you'd like to ever entertain the idea.

    Not sure if you guys answer questions here but it looks like your 160 gallon manifold is 1 inch hard plumbing, but you reduce it to 3/4" hard plumbing for the return ends why? Also the silicon soft tubing for vibration reduction at the start of the pump is a great idea. Just curious there as well why it isn't 1 inch? Just trying to learn why people do what they do. I figured reducing the tubing and return piping would cause more pipe resistance lowering water flow?

    The overflow lines in the sump I notice are different lengths. Why is this? Also. What is the preferred bulkhead to use on an in tank bulkhead setup. I was going to use a slip/slip bulkhead but wonder if the bottom fitting should be the female threaded version.

    Question about your plumbing. What is the point of the gate valve in you return? Shouldn't the return be free flow at what ever rate the pump is pushing the water into the tank?

  • @mikeobujen1904
    @mikeobujen1904 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Love the plumbing set-up and will be using a similar set-up for a future reef aquarium I'm planning. I'm a bit confused though with the three valve manifold in the return lines. Are those for inputs from something like a media reactor? And if that's the case, won't the higher pressure from the larger return pump force the return flow out those valves and into the media reactor in the reverse direction. Maybe I just need to keep watching and see what you do with those inputs...

    1. If you don't mind me asking, because I am buying that same vectra return pump soon from you. At 17:51 into the video, is that a 3⁄4" Pipe Adapter Spigot x Barb coming out of the Vectra return pump or a 1"? I know the output of the vectra is 1" but just wondering if I am going to to need a 3/4" or 1" pipe adapter? Because I am hoping to run 1" piping throughout the rest of the return.
    2. Is it ok to use this same type of weld-on glue you used @ 13:30, connecting a schedule 40 pvc to bond to a schedule 80 valve?
    3. Where can I find those valves you used on the air line tubing @ 4:00 into video, that comes out of the top of the overflow tubing? If you sale them, do you have a part number? Thank you!

    The Vectra looks like it can be used either in either a submerged or "dry" configuration. As a novice, I would think that keeping anything out of the saltwater possible would prolong its life, but submersible simplifies the plumbing and decreases the potential for leaks by a few connections. Am I missing something here? Could you elaborate on your choice, please?

    Any chance you could list the parts you used including the sizes used for this example to make it easier to plan the build I have.
    I'm just a little unsure about what sized to use on the down pipe and return to and from the display tank.
    I must say that your videos are so useful and informative and wish that we had something similar here in the UK and Europe.
    We have lots of great hardware and shops in europe but nothing is geared towards DIY setups just retail selling.

      So the main line is 1" pipe with a 1" tee and you used a reducer to the 1/2" ball valve....is that correct? (at the manifold)

      and the Cepex Ball valve at each end of the run L/R are 1/2" too.....

    Do you know what material is the back of an innovative marine tank? I know they have a small refugium conversion, but I would really like to have a larger one under the tank to more effectively grow pods and macro algae.

    I have a 50 gallon tank drilled with two 1” bulkheads draining into a modular marine Overflow. The over flow has three holes set up for a bean anamal. The holes are 1/2 inch. Was wondering if this will work or am I setting myself up for disaster?

      The only option I have is to use an adapter to go from 1/2 to 1 inch. Do you think this we’ll work?

    I am setting up a 380 gallon salt tank that has overflows on each end with two holes in each (0.75" and 1.5"). I have a 95 gallon sump set up in the adjacent room to the display tank. I would like to use the Herbie Method. On one side I would have my main drain 1.5" and on the other side an emergency drain 1.5". Both of the 0.75" one each side would be for my return lines. My question on the one side the main drain would control the water level (WL) in that overflow, but what will happen to the overflow on the other side? Would water rise clear up to the emergency drain and then would it continuously drain through there or would the one main drain handle both WLs? Would it be better to have each overflow with a 1.5" Main drain and the 0.75" lines both be emergency drains? This would require me to plumb outside of the display tank my return lines.

    Just curious if you guys have a kit to purchase that includes all the plumbing needed for tank-to-sump? I've been trying to find a list of everything I need to buy so I don't mess anything up. Hahaaaaa. Halp.

      We don't have a kit because every tank is going to be different and the goals of one reefer to the next will also be different. If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask; we're here to help! My #1 suggestion would be to sit down with a pencil and paper and draw everything out. At least for me, that's where I catch a lot of the dumb mistakes before they happen. Plus, you'll be able to get an accurate count on the various fittings that you'll need to complete the job 🙂

    It's very complicated and for highend tanks. Can you please give some suggestions/budget ways for smaller tanks as well?

    What sizes are your overflow lines, your manifold and the return lines. What size are the check valves on the return lines. I'm getting ready to build a 200 gallon tank using the Vectra L1 pump and want to make sure I have adequate drainage for the pump size.

    I have a reef ready 180 and don't want to go through the hassle of redoing the plumbing. It's a durso setup. Will opening up the vent hole on top of the drain pipe silence it more?

    When adding a cpr overflowbox how would you plumb the inside of the box? It only has one bulk head. Would you let it just drain through the bulk head or do you need to add a pvc elbow?

    If you have a spare tank and some extra drill bits do some test runs! Drilling a tank is very easy but for sure use a template

    How is the Vectra M1 return pump performing? Are you happy you went with it over your usual choice of return pump?

      I've just picked one up and am wondering if I Should get the reeflink as well? Ultimately it seems gettig a Neptune Apex would be better, but the reeflink is approx AUS$250 and the Apex Starter Kit is AUS$1100-

    So I'm setting up a 75 gallon tank with a return pump that's rated at 819gph. What size pvc would be acceptable to run from the overflow to the sump?
    I'm thinking 1.25" or 1.5". There won't be a whole lot of bends on the way down.

  • @johnsavanyo

    What size pipe is running between the overflow and the sump? Do you have any concern if it can handle the output of the Vectra pump? The smallest one has max flow of 2100GPH.

    hey I know these are 2yrs but can you make a refugium first then put protein skimmer in chamber after refugium ? I'm completely new to this.Also would the protein skimmer knock out the copepods colonies?
