I don’t know what I’ll do without this man. The filtration in my 480 gallon aquarium wasn’t good. I finally build a sump after watching this video and finally I have proper filtration. (The sump I built was bigger)
I like it🙂 what you think if I did this exact set up and raise the baffles a bit higher to fit more bio media in the center chamber? What’s the highest you’ll go on the baffles and water level?
Is there a set height baffles need to be mine are 12 1/8 long. one inch off bottom of tank next one 12 1/8 Long 7 3/8 high for a 55 gallon sump thx you
I am about to embark on my first sump using a 40 gal breeder for a 125 tank. I have viewed many videos related to sump design and construction - your video was by far the most helpful. I do, however, have a few questions. Is there a rule of thumb that relates the height of the baffles and the flow? Is there a rule of thumb that one can use to determine the space between the baffles and a rule of thumb that determine the size of each compartment. I have also heard by many that acrylic does not bond very well to glass with silicone - how did you make it work? Finally, do you have a video that addresses the overflow from the display tank or is your tank drilled? Thanks so very much - even a 70 year old guy can learn something new. Cheers
Can you make baffles as tall you want? I am wanting to do 50 gallon tank. Also want a few extra baffles for different types of media. Would that be ok also?
Thx for the video! Also the plumbing vid looks great! I'm going to make a freshwater sump out of a old aquarium 150x50x50 cm. I will trying to make something like this, but I'm using 6 glass plates and no filter socks since I saw a lot of reefers complaining about the washing issues. So filter flos here with sponge. Then sera siporax, then k1 then pump
I have zero issues with cleaning. Below the bulkheads none of the pvp is glued. Makes it easy to remover my socks and clean. I will be making different sumps in the future but for now this works great! Hope your build turns out good! Thanks for watching
I built one...after watching too many videos. What I have is a 20H chosen because it fits under the stand I built for my 36g bowfront. 5 baffles. #1- 10", #2- 1" off the bottom, #3- 7 1/2" with 1" gap betweeneach baffle, compartment one is intake and skimmer at 7 1/2". Compartment two is 6 1/2", baffles #4- 6 34", ( 1 1/2" gap, will have black sponge), #5- 1 1/2" off the bottom. Pump Return I'd last compartment at 4 3/4".
I really enjoyed watching your video. It gave me the confidence to build my own sump filter. Thank you for being so thorough and not skipping steps. What size sump would you recommend for an 80 gallon fish tank?
Looks good but what I would have done, working on one right now, is made my bubble traps as small as possible and made the compartments where the filter media goes larger for more filter media. Maybe you can use that large center area for some moving bed media. Anyway, looks good.
Do you have a video of the set up to the tank? Fkn awesome video bro. Just building mines now. I’m just confused I only have one pipe coming out of my tank and one return pipe
You have the baffles on the sock side backwards. The gap on the bottom should be first and then the full seal baffle at the bottom. If that makes any sense.
Azraphael actually fairly easy and takes just seconds. I don’t have the pvc pipe that goes into the sock glued in so I can pop it right off. Thanks for watching!
All depends on your brand of tank. Yours might be different then mine. I do not remember the measurements but I’d recommend measuring inside of your tank for each build
Hope this video was helpful! This is part 1 of my NEW 180 Gallon Tank Setup. LIKE COMMENT SUBSCRIBE for more Videos!!

Awesome glad to hear that!
Good idea for the foam blocks. Nice build, yours is the simplest and easiest to make.
Love the simple clean design - I'm going to duplicate it for my 29 gallon reef tank - using a 20 gallon tank for sump - Thank you!!
No problem! Glad it helped!

Awsome Video always wanted to make a sump 👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Honestly not that hard to make.. Cost me a 1/4 of some on my canister filters! lol
I love how simplistic this build is but it looks so efficient and professional. Good job!
Thank you
The grate you put under sponge is called light difuser (spelling?). The ks for the vid it helped with my own project.
Hi,one query is,if anyhow our sump pump fails then how can we stop overlow the sump from aquarium water
Can you make baffles as tall you want? I am wanting to do 50 gallon tank. Also want a few extra baffles for different types of media. Would that be ok also?
Yes you can make the baffles different heights for different flows and pumps

I’d recommend a 30 gallon. I appreciate the watch and glad it helped!

Thanks! Really helpful. Is there a plumbing instillation video??
th-cam.com/video/bpi1Kge-TYc/w-d-xo.html
Hi, is the pump flow you have sufficient for your 180 gallon?
Why the 2 holes, does it have 2 pumps pumping water in the sump?
If i use 1.5” bulkheads what size bit would you recommend using?
Would 1/8" thick plexiglass be thick enough, or would you recommend the 1/4" thick instead?
I would recommend 1/4” I think the 1/8 would be to thin and bow
Really it was clean and clear for me. Go a good idea about aquarium sump. Can use the same setup for a Marine aquarium?
Mohamed Muhsin yup you can make a sump from any tank. Would just need to get the baffles cut to the correct size for your tank
Do you have a video of the set up to the tank? Fkn awesome video bro. Just building mines now. I’m just confused I only have one pipe coming out of my tank and one return pipe
Sure do! th-cam.com/video/bpi1Kge-TYc/w-d-xo.html
Any particular reason you went so thick on the polycarbonate sheets? I was thinking of going as thin as possible just to save money
If you go any smaller they will bow unless you go with glass!
@@KeepinitReel616 I figured that was the reason! Guess I’ll have to make some tweaks
i can use aqua mesh for baffles also right
You have the baffles on the sock side backwards. The gap on the bottom should be first and then the full seal baffle at the bottom. If that makes any sense.
I see your point with the first baffle. The gap on bottom can be first. What do you mean by full seal baffle at the bottom?
Good job
Thanks!
What is the white material you used for spacers ?
It was just some packing foam I found around the house.. was out of a TV box LOL
@@KeepinitReel616 wow, would not of thought that would work/hold up.
Thanks for the tip :-))
That 3.5 hole saw ain’t big enough for my 4” filter bag ring. It will not fit. I’m going to try a 4” hole saw
Where did you get the baffles from? Did you cut them yourself?
Got them cut at ace hardware!
Keepin it Reel is that where you got the glass as well?
its been 4 years, you change the battery in that smoke detector yet?
could you please tell, what the L;H;W of that aquarium
sincerely,Alex
We are having a discussion on whether to use hard PVC PIPE or flexible pipes/tubing
Changing your filter socks looks like its gonna be a pain in the ass, besides that looks good
Azraphael actually fairly easy and takes just seconds. I don’t have the pvc pipe that goes into the sock glued in so I can pop it right off. Thanks for watching!
Hey do you have the dimensions of the plexiglass that you used? I'm also building a 30 gallon sump for my 75 :)
All depends on your brand of tank. Yours might be different then mine. I do not remember the measurements but I’d recommend measuring inside of your tank for each build
qual o nome dessas bolsas que ficam na saida do cano?
great video but the flow is backward.
