Awww thank you so much, Sarah! I greatly appreciate that. And reading everyone's comments about school supplies has brought back even more memories. Good times! :)
Your stitching is beautiful! For the evil thread in your Chatelaine pattern, you might try running strands over a slightly damp sponge before stitching with it. Or even better, switch it out for Petite Thread Braid. More bling, and less aggravation. My guess on your Jeannette Douglas flowers is a box lid. Your colour choices on all on them are lovely. So, has your adorable cat decided it's too good to appear in your floss tubes anymore 😄 Take care and happy stitching.
That's a good suggestion for treating the floss. I was running it through some wax and that made it easier to handle, but it dulled the high shine. I haven't heard of the damp sponge method so will definitely give it a try. Thanks and happy stitching to you, too!
Hello fellow Canadian. Being a lefty is so much fun isn't it ? Love your projects especially the ink circles. Thank you for the tea...so going shopping.
Thanks, Sally! And that's actually a cute idea. How clever that would have been if I stitched each one on a different linen thread count and a different needle gauge. Maybe next time! ;)
I am stitching my Jeannette Douglas Sept. mimi bouquet as I watch your video. My guess for the finish of your mini bouquets would be small hoop pincushion finish. When I saw your bundle of rayon threads, I was reminded of doing Brazilian Embroidery. I do remember the floss would ravel so easily. It is beautiful, but not the easiest to work with. As always, great video. Happy stitching!
Thank you, Tam! Isn't September a beautiful one? I can't wait to start. And yes, I suspected that the Oasis floss may be a little more difficult to handle. Happy stitching to you, too!
Hi Tam! Congrats on being the lucky recipient for the Jeannette Douglas Mini Topiary chart plus supplies! Please send me an email (check the drop-down box in this video, or in the About section) and we'll take care of the details. Thanks!
Thank you so much for watching, Joanne! Much appreciated. I'm surprised but also delighted at the number of fellow Canadian stitchers who also have Flosstube channels. I need more hours in the day to watch them all! :)
Hi Joanne! Congrats on being the lucky recipient of the two Hitchcock designs from Stitch Man Darcy. You can find my email in the drop-down box above or on my "About" page, so please send me a note and we'll take care of the details. Cheers!
Hi Ryan, I really enjoy your videos, but haven’t commented yet. I spent several wonderful hours with you today catching up on your videos. I’m recovering from broken wrist surgery and spending time with you helped take my mind off of feeling sorry for myself not being able to stitch. I love the room you film in. Looks cozy and inviting. I just wanted to say hi. ❤️
You are so right about the colours we see in the photos of charts sometimes being way off from the actual floss colours! I am working on a Madame Chantilly chart right now that the called for floss looked nothing like the pic on the front of the chart. I just pulled colours from my stash to match as closely as I could to the actual pic. I am much happier with the colours I substituted in and after all, like you said, it’s the cover photo that attracts our eye, so that is what I want my finished piece to look like. My guess is you will make some needle books or berries with the flower bouquets. Can’t wait to see what you do with them! Thanks Ryan for another great video!
Thanks for the excellent guesses, Michelle! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about the photos. I used to be very loyal to the designer's colour choices. But I've learned that no one is going to come into my home with a swatch book and accuse me of using the "wrong" floss. We need to stitch what makes us happy, and if that means doing our own conversions, then so be it!
Always fun to see your newest video pop up! I agree - life is too short to stitch on something that doesn't speak to you. As I recall, Jennifer on Two Tall Stitchers mentioned a book for left-handed stitchers on their most recent video. I guess you are going to make pin cushions out of the Jeanette Douglas bouquets. Happy stitching!
Your projects are beautiful Ryan, and I TOTALLY understand your frustration with cover photo to real world issues with color conversions. It can be so very frustrating when you can’t get the floss to match what caught your eye in the first place!!
Hi Margaret! Thank you for relating. I'm glad I'm not the only one. And there are no rules in stitching (mostly haha) so we can change the colours to anything we want!
Hello Ryan...I think you are making 4 sided boxes with the bouquets, that would be a pretty trio when finished. I love your finish on Ellen's pillow I saw on IG, very nice!
Thank you so much, Kathy! Ellen is always bugging me to get into the finishing business but I'm happy just doing it for friends. Happy stitching and thanks for the guess!
My guess for the finish is a set of small pillows for a dough bowl. I see you love Hitchcock since you have that same quote on a shelf behind you. Thanks for a fun video.
Synthetic fibers can be irritating to work with, as they’re usually “springy” (especially if they’re on spools or carded). I have found that Thread Straighteners from Yarn Tree make a huge difference; they encourage the fiber to relax. You might be able to order them directly from Yarn Tree. If not, Fat Quarter Shop carries them in several different colors, as do various other needlework shops.
Thank you so much for the tip, Katrina! I have not heard of these before and immediately had to google them. I ended up using some Thread Magic and it helped make the thread easier to control but took the shine off it. Not exactly what you want in a specialty thread. Looks like I'll be adding these to my cart so I'm ready for the next curly encounter!
Hi Ryan, I very much enjoyed seeing all the projects that you’ve been working on. Your Ink Circles with the copper floss is so stunning. My guess is that perhaps you’ll finish the Jeannette Douglas mini bouquets into either needle rolls or small pin pillows, either would be beautiful and I’m looking forward to seeing what you create. Thank you for sharing another great video.
Thank you for the video it was lovely to see all your projects again. I would guess you are going to make a needle book? Hitchcock is an interesting theme to be stitching.
Excellent guess! And I do love Hitchcock but hadn't thought of stitching it before. The quote is a nice and manageable one to do in between larger projects. Happy stitching!
Hi Ryan, I have used rayon floss before, I found that I had to use shorter lengths and REALLT IMPORTANT, your starting and ending tails HAVE to be secured really good because the thread is so slippery that they come undone. Hope this help. As always enjoyed your Flosstube.
Ha! I knew right away when you showed the Jeanette Douglas chart it was from around late 90s-2000, that kind of pale band sampler with specialty stitches was all the rage back then. I stopped stitching in 2000 after a solid 20 years devoted to it since I was a teenager, and then after another 20 years pulled out all my old forgotten stuff in 2020. I found so many 90s charts in that old stash and a few unfinished projects like that one you showed. I have one sampler with drawn thread hardanger in it and I can't remember how to do it anymore, need a refresher, for sure. Plus it's alot of white on white and I like a little more color now. Yours looks very nice! I found you through Maximum Cross Stitch Power Hour. Hope she posts again soon.
You're so right, Melanie! My mom had an interest in stitching from 1985-95 and hasn't stitched since. She was shocked to discover the breadth and depth of amazing new designs and reproduction samplers available today. What are you planning on doing with your vintage stash? And yes! We need Ellen back!!! Everyone misses her. I think we may not have to wait much longer, even if I have to drag her over here to be a guest. :)
@@RyRyMcGuy Thank you for replying to me! Yes you are right alot has changed while I wasn't paying attention, mostly in a good way, but I have a few unpopular opinions. Let's just say sparkly fabric that's really splotchy plus beads, plus glittery thread plus other overly embellished gee-gaws all in one piece is NOT my jam. Side eye to all of that. These fancy things were just starting to show up in shops when I quit, so to see where some of that went... As my grandmother used to say, "Well that's just too tacky to talk about...". A smattering of beads can be lovely and a little metallic thread here and there is nice, but mostly for me the stitches should be the star. I better shut up about that now, lol! As for my stash, I'm planning to stitch a good deal of it, most of it I still like. When I was stitching back then I gave most of my finished work away, and I'm not really feeling that generous now, I want some things for myself. Plus I have learned for the most part people don't really appreciate it. I stitched a lovely wedding sampler for my sister in 1993 and 10 years later when she got divorced she threw it in the trash (frame and all, mind you!) because it had both their names on it. I was of course furious when I later found out. I have a bunch of "vintage" (crap I feel old) Shepherd's Bush charts in those pale 90s colors that if I do them now I'll punch up the color a bit, I have about a dozen Lavender and Lace angels that I only completed 2 of back then (much more elegant than Mirabilia, imo) I have a chart called Plantation Sampler by Canterbury Designs which I always wanted to do and never did - I understand alot of the ones I have are out of print and difficult to get now. I told myself I wasn't going to buy anything new, but of course I have, lol! I am trying to mostly use what I have, these things sat patiently in totes for 20 years while I pursed every other creative interest known to man, so I owe them that attention now, I mean geez, I have some DMC that I know for a fact goes back to the 80s. I've run on about all that long enough, I could talk the eyelids off a donkey about any kind of sewing. Hello from Savannah, GA and happy stitching!
As a monogamous cross stitcher I am always amazed at how many starts and WIP's that people take on. The designs you chose to do are always pretty or clever and I really like them. SO enjoy your visits! ;0)
Thank you so much, Jennifer! I was also a mostly-monogamous stitcher, but I found it hasn't been so terrible having multiple projects to suit multiple moods and scenarios. And many of them are small enough that I can complete them relatively easily. Happy stitching!
Well, I thought I was going to have to email you and rattle your cage to get you to do a new Flosstube! So happy to see you back! Your stitching skills have really expanded this year, and your work gets more and more beautiful! Planning to see you at Jacobpalooza! I always hated back to school time because it was close to my birthday and I would get clothes for presents.
Hey Desiree!!! You can email me and rattle my cage anytime! And thank yo so much for the kind compliment! I'm not sure if I can make it to Jacobpalooza yet but I know I'll be missing out on something huge if I can't go. And that's definitely a bummer about getting clothes all the time for your birthday. As a kid, that was never any fun. I hope your birthdays now are filled with fun and indulgent treats!
My guess for what you are thinking about doing is, envelope sachets. I have been thinking about doing a specialty stitching project that one is beautiful and small. My philosophy about stitching is, if it is torturous and I am not enjoying the process I don't want to do it. I would start over and use a different thread choice. I blame Hitchcock, even today, for my fear of birds and my inability to use white shower curtains. When talking about London you should specify England or Canada 😆. Most Americans don't know there is a London up there 🤔.
Thank you for the wonderful comment, Rhonda! I hope you find a fun, small stitching project that appeals to you, sorry to hear about your Hitchcock-induced fears, and yes, I think I'll tuck that project away for a while and come back to it with a new floss for that curly rayon one. You're also completely correct about specifying which London! In this case, the weekend stitching event actually does happen to be in England. I'll be sure to clarify next time. 😊
Going back to school was my favorite part of summer. Forget free time...I want new supplies. I still get a kick out of going through the school supplies that are out in stores this time of year. Don't even get me started on new crayons! I would guess that you are going to make strawberries.
Oh yes, so many memories! Those fresh rubber erasers that you can't help but poke your pencil tip into, leaving a ring of graphite. Liquid paper. Loose leaf reinforcements. A calculator!!! I'm really dating myself here. hehe. And your guess is noted. :)
I'm loving all your projects! You do such a lovely variety, and I am discovering some new things I want to try as well. I am a huge Hitchcock fan and now, I'm going to be checking out Darcy as well. I always see or learn, or both, something new from each of your videos! Mimi does miss Stan, but she'll live lol. I think a picture of him in your tree as your family Christmas card would be lovely! I can't wait to see what you work on next!
Hi Kat! It makes me so happy to read your comments. Thank you! And I'll try to get Stanley to make a longer cameo next time. Until then, happy stitching!
Really enjoyed seeing your projects! I also kitted up Song of the Nightingale through Evertote and the threads are lovely. I’m guessing you’re finishing the flowers into a scissor case!
Ah, maybe there will be a Song of the Nightingale SAL somewhere along the way. It's such a beautiful chart and the colours are irresistible! And thanks for the guess! 🤞
Good morning, thank you for another wonderful video. I’ve not worked with the Oasis floss, but my suggestion would be Brazilian embroidery. It’s on my ‘to try’ list. I’m still thinking about my lady man embroidery, but I’m getting very tempted by September santa 🎅. One of my cats is a Siberian Forrest cat. She loves climbing our Christmas tree too. I loved your picture of afternoon tea at Liberty’s. I think it has to be one of my favourite shops. So that’s you talked me through most of my ironing again. Thank you until the next time. 🧺
I'm glad to hear you got your ironing done! And of course as soon as I read your comment, I had to google Brazilian embroidery and you totally nailed it. Now if only I can resist the urge to not try my hand at it. hehe. And FYI: I'm going to do a Prairie Schooler Santa. The Sweet Santa is a wee bit too big for a quickie project and I don't want to carry it forward into October. Best of luck with yours!
I really hate to guess on the colors via the picture on the chart. I do change from the recommended if there is a great difference. I love doing the mini bouquets. I refuse to use rayon thread.
I used to be so nervous thinking about changing from the recommended colours, thinking I'm going against what the designer envisioned. But it's for us and we should do it in a way that pleases us.
When my kids were young, I would shop for extra notebooks, glue and other things the office supply stores used as a 'loss leader' and gift bags of the extra stuff to teachers (I'd check with them first to see if they wanted them). I'm guessing that you are going to finish your stitched piece into the front of a project bag. Yes, retire projects (or at least fibers) that you aren't enjoying. There are too many things we'd love to stitch to waste time on something that does not make you happy!
Hi Deb! I'm sure you were a big hit with all of the teachers. I have many in my circle of friends and I know they spend a lot of money out of pocket to fill in those gaps, so what you did was very kind and much appreciated. And yes, no time to waste on the projects that don't create joy. Happy stitching!
I love back to school shopping. Love those sweet bouquets! If the stitching is no fun then stop. Life is too short. Im left handed and I have always stitched in hand. I started stitching in the 80s. I do a full cross going one way and when im at the end of that line i just move down and go back the other way.
Thank you, Sheila! Are you a left-handed stitcher too? I can't seem to stitch in hand the way you do. It's probably the way and order in which I form my crosses, which makes it physically impossible to switch directions unless I rotate 180 degrees after every row, which is somewhat impossible if you're not stitching plain rows. I'm sure there has to be an easy way.
Enjoyed your video! Absolutely loved those pictures of Standley in the tree! Yes, you should really use that as a holiday card picture. Check out Christie of Cross Hatch Quilts, video prior to #6, for her tutorial on stitching in hand. She is a left handed stitcher. Watch various videos and see different methods to find one that works for you.
Hi Marla! Thank you so much for the video recommendation. I'll definitely be checking it out. Since I've posted this video, I settled upon a technique that I'm fairly comfortable with at home, but it would be nice to have something more portable and will continue my research, as you suggest. :)
Hey Andrea! I love that you love my videos. Thank you. And yes, you definitely beat me to the gate with the Lady Man race. Keep an eye out for a prize. :)
The bane of a designers existence, from stitched piece to print! I’m sorry the cover was disappointing… I blame the printer, as I have always used a professional photographer and we fuss over the cover, it looks great on his computer and we go to print and it can be disappointing for sure…. It’s gotten somewhat better over time but still not always what I wish for. I’ve changed printers 4 times and everyone is the same problem.
I can’t imagine how frustrating that must be for designers like you. In fact, I run into the same situation in my line of work. But I want to assure you that no apology is necessary! I’m the one who should apologize for not making it more clear that I wasn’t calling you out specifically. Rather, I attributed any discrepancy in the mini topiary to the fact that the chart is 21 years old and we all know printed colour images are not stable over time. Rest assured I will always have a Jeannette Douglas project in rotation. In fact, I don’t think I’ve recorded a flosstube yet without showing off something JD. 😁
@@RyRyMcGuy oh no worries, I just wanted you to know that I do fret about it and despite my best tries it still does not translate to great colour on covers. But when you said 21 years, that was something, so long ago…. Did not believe for a minute I would still be doing this at this pace so many years later! I am thankful for that, and appreciate very much that you are stitching JDD! 😊😊
I know what you mean about the chart/photograph discrepancy. I know a lady that bought a very expensive kit of an owl bc she fell in love with the details. Unfortunately, the picture on line of the kit was a painting of the owl and not the stitched up model. A painting can have far, far, far more detail than a cross stitch. Unfortunately, she didn't discover that this was not going to be a good representation of the photo until about 25% of the way through the stitching process. She didn't get what she fell in love with. Very unscrupulous practice by the company to not test it before posting it for sale. I don't know if it was a UFO for her or not. She was out big bucks! Yeah, look very very close at the photo, is it the painting or is it of the stitched piece.
Hi Ryan! Don't know if it's 'good', but from memory, Crosshatch quilts does a left handed demo in one of her videos. th-cam.com/video/alflPAH3wTk/w-d-xo.html Good luck!
Oof let's give you a non-spam comment! Good to see you again, and I'd love to enter the (whoops, redacted) this time. I can't get the idea of a little pillow out of my head, so I'll go with that guess for the finish. :) My friend just got into cross stitching and I showed them Lady Man (we're both nonbinary)--they loved it! By the way, thank you for your advice on iced tea. The way you make it (add the tea into the pitcher of water) is so much easier than boiling and steeping before I add cool water, so I get to drink a lot more iced tea now!
Thanks for the non-spam comment, Thorn! Much appreciated. :) Lady Man is such a great stitch. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as your iced tea. Happy stitching!

My guess is that you will turn them into needle minders
And one can never have enough neelde minders! 😁
Thanks for the updates! I’m going to have to guess which Hitchcock film is your favorite?!
I do have a cute story about a Hitchcock film in particular. I must remember to mention it for my next flosstube. :)
Hi!! So good to see you, Ryan!
Thank you, Linda!!! and thanks for popping by. :)
I absolutely love your show!! Hello from Tuscaloosa Alabama, USA .... you're just precious 💖
Well hello, Tammy from Tuscaloosa Alabama! Your words just made my day. 😊
I'm a lefty as well! Let me know if you find a good tutorial for hand stitching. I've tried before but haven't had the best of luck.
Well hello, fellow lefty! I've had a suggestion or two that I'll check out and will definitely share any favourable findings. Fingers crossed!!!
Love your videos Ryan. Keep them coming. Lady man finish before you? Guess?

❤️
😁
Hi Ryan! Don't know if it's 'good', but from memory, Crosshatch quilts does a left handed demo in one of her videos.

Good luck!
Awesome! Thanks! I'll be sharing news of my progress likely next video so I'll check it out right away.
Oof let's give you a non-spam comment! Good to see you again, and I'd love to enter the (whoops, redacted) this time. I can't get the idea of a little pillow out of my head, so I'll go with that guess for the finish. :)
My friend just got into cross stitching and I showed them Lady Man (we're both nonbinary)--they loved it!
