Jack, I have a 03 530i as well had it about 5 years my dad has been driving it until he got sick in 2018, I tired selling it for cheap and no one would buy it. So I started to clean it up and is now looking to refresh it and do some performance upgrades and this is by far the best e39 530i I have seen. I have been searching high and low for this type of build. Not sure about the e85 ethanol I need to do more research but man, if this is the work you do at your shop I live in WPB, I have to come visit your Shop. 1. About how much BHP would car have without the e85 system? 2. What kinda seats?
Dude, what a nice clean build this is, and of all the things you mentioned that interests me was the way you painted your needles! I like white faced guages and wanted to paint mine since, as you know, they are white and would blend with the white guages. My question is, did you physically remove the needles, or did you just simply tape everything off? 🤔
Just picked up an 02 530! This is the nicest/coolest/cleanest one i've seen and is part of the reason i started looking into 530's over 540's bc they seem to be underappreciated in the overall market, and more potential from a power/dollar perspective. What standalone system did you use?
Sick build. I've been working on M54's for a while and have been looking into a turbo for one. Any advice, things I should know before diving into that project?
Car looks great and great power figures too. Out of interest, are you able to share how much ignition advance roughly you're able to run on the e85 at max boost level? Will you be using the megasquirt boost control or a different in car controller when you change from manual boost control?
Thank you! At full boost starting at 4k rpm its 11 deg and gradually ends at 19deg at redline. at lower boost levels starts 17deg and ends at 23deg. If I keep the MS I will use the boost control in there, I am debating on going to a Motec M130 Ecu in the future. We use the M150 in the GTRs we build at my shop and love them.
I really would love to know how much this all costed you and a breakdown of what’s been done in detail. I want to turbo my ZHP sedan or supercharge it but I’m by no means a drag racer/track star, I’d just like the opportunity to offend my brothers with F80 M3’s lmao
I stopped counting many years ago. I would say I have close to 15k or more in just hardware for the turbo setup with supporting mods. A breakdown in details is too lengthy to type out. there is a build thread on bimmerforums you can browse through
In europe it’s about 5k money spent, stock motor and tuned stock ecu, turbo, intercooler and manifold ~1500-2000, boost piping and downpipe(homemade) 200-400 clutch and lsd diff 2000 more and injectors about 600-700. Tuning stock ecu is most difficult part but totally worth it, you save some money and no problems with instrument cluster.

Hey man, a little to the party, but just wanted to ask if you ever had any issue with the short rod ratio (1.5). Especially with it being boosted, did you come across any piston/cylinder wall/vibration issues?

Look for one that’s not been overheated, also nice if the VANOS system is done after 100k and also VCG, but very reliable otherwise they slightly burn oil and at this age they have some pretty old hoses and gaskets so if you get one be ready to put a lil money in it
I sold the one in my profile picture it was an 02 530i with 140k but it had overheated and after I put new coils, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, valve cover, new ccv hoses and it still wasint running well because it overheated a few times in the past and the head gasket was shot, So as of now o own a black 2001 530i with 200k miles on it and it runs as smooth as butter because it was maintained well. The only thing that causes real damage is over heating the motor and just driving it. Every time you turn on your car and shit it off court it as one cycle, don’t count how many miles are on it, the only thing that matters is the amount of cycles it had went through and if it had been kept up on, I’m only 19 and I have a lot to learn about these cars but it’s so far been very reliable for me and super easy to fix!
